Tang is the author of eight books, including the New York Times bestseller, The Grapes of Math. He is also the creator of Kakooma, a series of fun math puzzles that are designed to strengthen computation and mental math skills. Our Lower School students, parents, faculty and staff were so enriched by Mr. Tang’s visit. We thank Dr. Missy and Mr. Bobby Graham for underwriting Mr. Tang’s visit.

Led by Allie Freeman’s 17 points, Mahlon Martin’s 15 points and Justin Gooseberry’s 15 rebounds, the determined Wildcats fell 45-40 to a very talented Harding Academy team in the championship game. Relying on a stingy team defense that allowed only 40 points per game, the team finished the season with a 32-4 record, shattering the school record for most wins in a season. Along the way to the state championship game, the Wildcats captured first place in the 5-3A Conference Tournament. Several Wildcats garnered individual awards for their outstanding play during the season. Martin was named to the 3A All-State Team and to the Arkansas All Sophomore Team. Freeman and Martin were named to the 3A All-State Tournament Team. Martin, Freeman and William Pollock were named to the 5-3A All Conference Team. The Wildcats were led by Senior Zack McGinnis, who anchored the State Champion 4x800-meter relay team, along with Juniors Conner Noland, Miller Wilbourn, and John Michael Ekdahl. The team swept the other distance events, capturing state titles in the 800, 1600, and 3200 meter runs. McGinnis was the high point scorer of the meet. The Wildcats were also led by Senior Adam Angel whose 5th place finish in the 100m and 200m and strong leg in the 4x400m relay helped secure the win.

The girls’ soccer team had another outstanding season, winning another conference title and advancing to the Final Four in the state tournament. This is the 6th time in the last 7 years that the team has made it to either the Final Four or to the Championship game. The most exciting game of the state tournament was the quarterfinal game against Berryville, where the girls came back from a 3-1 deficit with 20 minutes left in the game, winning 4-3 in double overtime. All-Conference players this year were Anne Thomas Rystrom, Madison Moody, Elsie Pugh, Laura Lanier and Katie McCain. All-State awards went to Anne Thomas Rystrom, Madison Moody, Elsie Pugh and Laura Lanier. The All-State Tournament selection was Madison Moody. Sophomores Anna Daerr and Margo Lee were recognized by All-Arkansas Preps. The boys’ soccer team had their best season on record, going undefeated in conference play and advancing as a no. 1 seed to the state tournament. The team lost in the first round of the state tournament in a penalty shoot-out to an inspired Arkadelphia team. Players receiving All-Conference awards were Justin Robinson, Shawn Robinson, William McCastlain, Ethan Brass, and Hans Braunfisch. The Annual Fund drive was chaired by Michelle and Allen Carney; parents of Jack, 8th grade and Logan, 5th grade. The committee of 46 had two important goals: to raise $375,000 AND to get our families to PARTICIPATE! The excitement and willingness of our families to raise the bar made the difference in this year’s Annual Fund Drive! The Chairs and Committee raised over $408,000 with 55% Parent Participation! Our sincere appreciation to the parents, faculty, staff and friends who gave to the Annual Fund this past year, and to our amazing Annual Fund (photo, l to r) Annual Fund Chairs Allen and Michelle Carney with Harriet and Warren Stephens Chairs, Allen and Michelle Carney!

Skip Rutherford, Clinton School of Public Service Dean, speaks at the Capstone Conference

Students were assigned to one of five committees that met regularly throughout the year to plan, organize, secure speakers, and arrange for travel. Students hosted The Capstone Conference at the School on Tuesday, April 30 with the theme of “Arkansas’ Role in the 21st Century: Influenced by the Past and Leading the Future.” Speakers included many business and political leaders, including Skip Rutherford, Dean of the Clinton School of Public Service; Warren Stephens, CEO of Stephens, Inc.; Dr. John A. Kirk, Chair of the History Department at UALR; Mireya Reith, founder of Arkansas United Community Coalition; and Dr. Robert Entzminger, Provost at Hendrix College. After the conference, students enjoyed traveling to Fayetteville to take in the Arkansas Razorbacks vs. Missouri State baseball game. Then, it was on to War Eagle Caverns and the Fay Jones Architecture School at the University of Arkansas. Their last day on the road was spent exploring the beautiful Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art. To fulfill the community service component of the project, students spent afternoons during testing week volunteering at Dunbar Gardens and Our House Shelter.

REVERIE LITERARY MAGAZINE UNVEILED The 2013 Creative Writing Class presented Reverie, Volume 5 in a chapel program on May 10. The 40-page publication of student poetry, prose, artwork, and photography showcases work from every grade in the school. A highlight of the magazine this year is the cover art, created by one of our youngest students – Pre-K3 student Emily Stacks. Emily received the first printed copy of the publication.

Student-directed curriculum committees created assignments for students to complete before, during and after each major component of the project. Assessments were included as part of students’ history grade. Special thanks go to the 8th grade teaching team and to Katie Robinson who was instrumental in helping students with webpage design, online t-shirt ordering, and creation of the final chapel presentation.
