Epoka University Architecture Department The department of Architecture at Epoka University is dedicated to providing an excellent educational experience for students intending to enter the profession of architecture. One of the primary missions is to provide an advanced curriculum that can offer to the students the possibility by which they can be responsive and active to human needs in creating the sustainable built environment, thinking on the needs, demands and problems of the society. The department program seeks to multiply insights and abilities of students, including sensitivity to the aesthetic and social responsibilities of environmental design, the cultivation of a broad, humanistic, world view, commitment to research, respect of innovation, an advanced understanding of the culture of practice, and sophisticated graphic skills and technical vocabulary. The education of students in sustainability is a major focus of the curriculum. Our priority is to make the students explore new territories and break their own limitation, gathering new knowledge and training them to master new skills. As such they can act, make, construct and create via discussing possibilities, criticizing and shaping questions. Communication and dialogue is vital for them. The department of Architecture prepares students to be perceptive, skilled, creative and capable of
acting in a responsible manner in their future profession. One of our missions is to install in our students a strong social consciousness so they can be active in improving the quality of their communities. Its vision is to offer a leafing Architecture program in Albania and Balkan region. It teaches sustained evaluation of principles, traditions and requirements of building in all its aspects. Its goal is to advance the profession of architecture by combining artistic talent, technical proficiency and social engagement in pursuit of excellence. In our department research and critical thinking is crucial so the students can be engaged to advance further their disciplines in different field of architecture. This is realized with an ultimate aim of making possible for each student to make a real contribution to the improvement of the built environment, to develop his or her intellectual growth.

ON POGRADEC: FRAGMENTED COHERENCE “Në katund kërcet një portë...në Liqer heshtë një lopatë... Një shqiponjë-e arratisur fluturon në Mal-të-Thatë....” Lasgush Poradeci, “Poradeci”, 1933 “...The city, the noted urban sociologist Robert Park once wrote, is “man’s most consistent and on the whole, his most successful attempt to remake the world he lives in more after his heart’s desire. But, if the city is the world which man created, it is the world in which he is henceforth condemned to live. Thus, indirectly, and without any clear sense of the nature of his task, in making the city man has remade himself’. If Park is correct, then the question of what kind of city we want cannot be divorced from the question of what kind of people we want to be, what kinds of social relations we seek, what relations to nature we cherish, what style of life we desire, what aesthetic values we hold. The right to the city is, therefore, far more than a right of individual or group access to the resources that the city embodies: it is a right to change and reinvent the city more after our hearts’ desire. It is, moreover, a collective rather than an individual right, since reinventing the city inevitably depends upon the exercise of a collective power over the processes of urbanization. ‘The freedom to make and remake ourselves and our cities is, I want to argue, one of the most precious yet most neglected of our human rights. How best then to exercise that right?” David Harvey (2012) Rebel Cities: From the right to the city to the urban revolution, Verso, London
On the Studio The recent keenness and determination of local policies on urban development in Albania has attracted the academic milieu. Being coherent with the regional dynamics and urban development strategies, architecture drafts itself as an agent to spot the qualities of space as social and environmental setting device. Architectural education through the advanced design studio - which mostly acts as an experimental apparatus - aims to investigate, analyze and put forward creative sustainable research and design proposals. The objective of this studio consists in understanding contemporary urban spaces in their social, cultural, political and environmental complexities. The 2015 fall ARCH 401 – 2016 spring ARCH 402 studio courses are linked in order to be developed in an academic year studio. The one year studio is about exploring urban and architectural strategies seen in a varied and fragmented urban scale in the city of Pogradec. Its scope will be recognizing the site’s authenticity to assign it the value of coherence throughout a unique urban identity.
9
On Pogradec A small town with a modest economy but with rich natural and cultural assets, Pogradec has a lot of potentials to offer a good urban life and be a touristic attraction. The favorable natural conditions and its location made the Illyrian tribe of Encheleans to settle near the Lake of Lychnidus (Ohrid ) in the ancient times, today known as the castle of Pogradec. Later on, the settlement developed in the area down the castle and took the name `Pogradec` which has a Slavic origin meaning ` down the city` . During Ottoman period It was known as İstarova or İstarye and was bounded to as kaza center in Görice (Korce) Sanjak of Manastır Vilayet before Balkan Wars. Pogradec took the character of an urban center during the communism regime with the development of public infrastructure, industry (mineral, wood and food), institutions, apartment blocks and accomodation. After 1990s, unfourtunately the town had an urban development that is not in coherence with its natural and historic character. However, it still have the opportunity to develope in a proper way with good architecture and public spaces.
On Fragmentation and Coherence “Architecture taken in its entirety is an infrastructure-like background and an enabling condition, a site that encompasses crucial elements and transcends the fragmented experiences of the everyday. Individual works of architecture are part of this background setting, and at the same time, they are interventions in it. They establish a foreground that negotiates with the background, interconnecting presence, memory and dream. To hold its place in background and foreground a work of architecture must have coherence. It needs to be congruent with its setting and resolved as an entity. This imperative – to make a coherent work – is difficult to achieve. Fragmentation invades the design and building process. “ E. Hatz, P. Lynch, (2013) Studio Themes: Fragmentation and Coherence, KTH, Stockholm In this studio we read the city as a an urban entity which is arised through the coherence of the proposed punctual themes. Each theme has its own urban gravity, thus offering a fragmented contribution to the wholeness. The studio challenges how to achieve an urban and architectural language which is generated by a thematic fragmented coherence.
On The Process The studio process will be spread onto two semesters. The first semester will include the research and analysis phase, which will be followed by the design phase. Principally, the second semester will be the continuation of the first semester submitted project. If it will be seen suitable with the course objectives, different development ways of the first term project might be accepted.
On Project Methodology The fourth year studio tempts to create a new pedagogical paradigm for studio education, which cuts across various disciplines, to demonstrate that design it is a discipline that needs to be reached via different approaches that promote the synthesis of interdisciplinary knowledge. This is partly due to the fact that such challenges an interdisciplinary skill set and an ability to operate across multiple tools for design with creativity. This project approach questions foundations and mediums for architectural design through socio - cultural programmatic engagement that build up in scope and complexity to engage issues of writing, diagramming, sketching, modelling and drawing. The design process is introduced as an iterative form of research that enables students to develop conceptual ideas about architecture and translate them into physical and material investigations through the media used in architectural studios so far. Each medium of work introduces an increasingly fuller set of relationships with regard to the site, program, emphasizing the interrelationship of these fundamental entities of architectural design. Students are required to work by using different tools and produce drawings and analytical texts for each session. The sessions will test both conceptual and analytical thinking as well as aid in the development of representational skills.

On Project Themes 1. Waterfront One of the most important features of Pogradec is its lakeshore. In this context this theme deals with developing design strategies for the waterfront of the city. The projects consist of three different lots; lot1: train station- Pogradec dock; lot2: dock- Turizmi ; lot 3: Turizmi- 1 Maji. The objective of the projects is to elaborate the waterfront by proposing variable design intervention accordingly with the site context and enhancing the use of these areas by the public.
2. Square and Pedestrian spaces
Though, in recent years there are some attempts to organize the square and increase the pedestrian spaces, there is still a lot of work to do in this issue. Taking this into consideration, this project aims to develop a design proposal for the square and the network of pedestrian public spaces. Furthermore, the project will bring urban and landscape design solution in different scale in the purpose of creating a livable city square.
3. Art, Cultural and public facilities
Pogradec is one of cities where art and culture takes an important place in the city life but the lack of the spaces for these activities is evident. In these conditions, the projects will focus on developing architectural projects for functions such as: art museum, library, theatre and some public facilities (education, health etc.)
4. Industrial Revitalization
Ex-industrial buildings are considered as heritage in our contemporary world. Pogradec still have some of ex-industrial sites from the communism era that should be evaluated in this context. The complex of ex-mineral industry of “Guri I Kuq is a site with architectural and landscape qualities that can be revitalized by introducing some new functions and transform the area into a livable place.
5. Accommodation
As a touristic city, Pogradec has a need for different types of accommodations. The project will focus on providing innovative accommodation typologies combined with other social programs that act as catalyst between local life and visitors.
6. Sport areas
The project objective is to fill the lack of a good organized sport complex by providing indoor and outdoor sport spaces for professional teams and citizens. The architectural project will focus on the design of a football stadium with all its facilities
7. Multimodal Transportation
The group of transportation project will search for developing strategies that provide a sufficient ecological transportation for the region. The objective is to develop a multimodal transportation system by using the water, train rails, bicycle transport and the design of a bus terminal. Egin Zeka & Jurtin Hajro, Studio Instructors

Mapping of Borders, Customs, Airports, Ports and Infrastructural connections of Pogradec with important cities of the Region
Athens
Thessaloniki
The city of Pogradec is located in the south-eastern part of Albania, and it is bounded with the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia via three border crossings and customs: Qafë-Thanë, Tushemisht-Shën Naum, and Goricë-Stenjë. The short distances from Pogradec to the nearby national and international ports and airports are a major advantage to the modality of transports, which only include vehicular transport via personal cars and bus/mini bus lines, and boat trips off and to the cities of Struga and Ohrid during the summer season. A railway infrastructure also exists, and it is situated up to the outskirts of the city, near the village of Mëmëlisht at “Gur i Kuq”. Part of the natural assets of Pogradec are many protected areas and natural monuments, but the first and foremost is the Lake of Pogradec, which is a protected zone of the fourth level and it is the major attraction of the city, out of which tourism derives as the driving force of the economy of the city. Places like the village of Lin (historic & archeological), Park of Drilon (green & blue), and the village of Tushemisht also contribute the developing of the zone.

02. History
HISTORIC DEVELOPMENT
URBAN DEVELOPMENT
1920
• One hundred years after the creation of the city, Pogradec is now for the first time free to develop in a newly founded state. • A more organic approach starts to develop and the population gets higher in number. • Villages around the city start a bigger development of their own.
1989
• Pogradec becomes an important point as the ending side of the newly built railway system • Investments are made in the city due to the natural resources it holds • Industrial buildings are built in the outskirts of the city and in Guri I Kuq • Apartament buildings as a part of the system
2005
• Residential complexes start developing around 2005 • The city is a popular touristic attraction, leading to most buildings being used especially for the summer season and being deserted during the colder months.
2015
• Highest development Pogradec has ever had. • Villages slowly becoming part of the city due to the high yearly constructions, and population growth.

Demography: 100,000
Pogradec has a population of approximately 100.000 inhabitants, constituting 25.3% of the region of Korça. It has greatly changed through the years due to migration and emigration with an average coefficient of 2%/year. The largest migration from rural areas toward the city occurred after the ’90 and is still happening nowadays. As a consequence the ratio between settlements is balancing and in few decades the urban population is expected to become dominant.

Located on the shores of Ohrid Lake, Pogradec offers a great attraction to the tourists which prefer the cool and temperate climate. The city is usually visited by permanent Albanian tourists who have bonded with the local families, while foreign tourists usually stay for one day or for a relatively short period. The tourism branches exploited include cultural, lake, gastronomic and artisanal tourism. The number of visitors has increased significantly in the past few years with the highest intensity felt during July and August. Blue tourism attracts nearly 60% of the yearly visitors of Pogradec. The unexploited potentials of the city are many and they could help the shift from seasonal-to a year-round tourism. New proposed branches of tourism are: water sports, winter, busines-conference and religious tourism.

Natural Heritage
Lake of Pogradec: Alcoran, flowers and swans are the representative elements of this lake. In 1980 UNESCO included it to the list of world’s natural heritage. Dating 5 million years ago the lake is of tectonic origin making it one of the rarest in the world. The depth of the lake exceeds 290 m and is house for more than 68 species. Village of Lin: Lin is a small peninsula on the western shores of the lake, 22 km from the town. Small stone and brick houses are build on the lake shores and on the back of the hill. It dates back to Iron Age and now has become a great tourist attracion due to the mosaics of Lin and the monumental tombs of Selca belonging to the 4th century B.C. Village of Drilon: It’s name comes from the river flowing across the village. Numerous decorative trees and plant come in harmony with the crystal waters of the river, wooden bridges and living organisms. It is considered as one of the most beautiful and peaceful places in Albania. Stone of Kamje: The natural rock formation was created by the wind forces along centuries. It is 100 m long and 80 m wide situated 1461 m above sea level. There are found many caves with drawings of hunting scenes. The scholars debate whether this scenes date from prehistory or middle age.

GOALS and OBJECTIVES Geography
Strengths: • Geographic position: Being in the border to Macedonia but also close to the city of Korca, Pogradec is a key element in developing strategies regarding tourism and economy in the region. • Appropriate climate: The mediterranean mountain climate is dominant in this region making it possible to experience all four seasons. • Abundance of natural resources: The lake is the major asset of the city and was declared as World Heritage Site by UNESCO. It is house for 40 endemic species which live only in these waters. The most known is Koran which has become the symbol of the city. • Heritage and culture: The city dates 6000 years B.C. and belongs to the neolithic period. Up to now there are documentet 24 natural and 36 cultural monuments. These artifact belong to different time period most notably; bronze and iron period as well as the Byzantine empire.
Weaknesses • Infrastructure issues: After ‘90 the city has gone through informal building development which has significantly changed the way the city
looks today. Which brings the issue of informality in the transport mediums. Streets are poorly maintained and lack orientation signs, while the railway system has stopped working years ago and is still in the same situation. • Lack of services: As a city with the tourism as its main attraction, the service sector is totally underdeveloped. • Seasonal frequentation: Lack of organized activities and other development of other tourism branches all year round bring an unbalanced seasonal frequentation; an overly crowded city in summer and an almost dead one in winter.
Opportunities:
• Growth of tourism: The city has the potential of developing all year round tourism and branchin out in different aspects. Cultural, religious and gastronomic tourism can be triggered through a simple and organized infrastructure since all the needed sources are already present. • Economic and cultural exchange with Ohrid: The clossenes between the two cities could go a step further by means of mutual economic strategies. • Walkable city: The small size of the city gives it a warm and human dimensions. The short distances and the presence of pedestrian or partly pedestrian areas could be the first steps towards the creation of a large vehicle free area.
Threats: • Maintainance of infrastructure: The extreme weather condition changes from summer to winter contribute in the fast deterioration of street
conditions and leed to great amound accident. To prevent these cases careful management is required. • Deterioration of archeological heritage: These national treasures are suffering the constant negligence from authorities as well as citizens. Throughout the years theirs conditions are becoming worse and if not carefully intervened and maintained there will be no much left to see. The worst case is seen in the castle of Pogradec where only a few stones remind you of what was there in contrast to the fully maintained castle in Struga belonging to the same period.
• Tourism competitiveness: Ohrid and Struga as of now offer much more opportunities for the turist compared to Pogradec. Having similar resouces and climate but better management and tourism strategies these two cities are a step ahead in the game.

MULTIMODAL TRANSPORT INDUSTRIAL REVITALIZATION ART, CULTURE AND ADMINISTRATIVE PUBLIC SPACES WATERFRONT ACCOMODATION SPORT AREAS
MULTIMODAL TRANSPORT - across era merkuri, erisa nesimi
Across the in-between passage On Pogradec City Movement The city of Pogradec is a typical Albanian city case, where the lack of management of its sources and also the economic challenges have blocked its development. Situated in a rather good geographic position, the city offers a variety of activities which if properly exploited can generate vitality. These possibilities include its setting, the presence of Ohrid Lake, cultural heritage and tourism. The analysis is focused on the way people spend their time in and move around the region. The findings show that the city has in the international, national and city scale caused by infrastructure and good management. Similarly a lack of consistency and quality of streets and spaces is a persistent problem in all the scales. The analysis begins on the wider scale and investigates the relationship between the city and the adjacent places. Our approach starts from the larger scale to the smaller one. The larger scale includes the relationship the city has with the adjacent country FYROM. Ohrid Lake is a major tourism hotspot in the region of Balkans related closely to Ohrid and Pogradec. However, compared to Ohrid, Pogradec has not utilized its potentials fully. These potentials consist in: -Acting as a bridge for connecting Albania with other countries (Route to East ) -Acting as a hot spot to attract “activity and spreading it throughout other cities in Albania. -Being an important cultural and natural site in Albania and the proximity to custom points can attract foreign tourism. Pogradec is a significant city within its region, especially after the new administrative organization. However the connecting network among the city and nearby settlements is fragmented. Thus we strongly stress: - The need to create a compact and connected networks system which will make movement easier and efficient. - Emphasis of the cultural and natural capacities by mapping them and using small elements of design. - organizing a system of a variety of activities.
The need for a clear mental map- A strategy The natural elements, the built environments, the squares and open spaces all help to define and make cities legible. The organization of these elements contribute to a mental map of the area that each person relies on to find their way along the city. Whilst local inhabitants generally already have a good knowledge of their city, their mental map can be enhanced by improving the city’s urban form and creating greater variety and character. Visitors approach cities with definite expectation of attraction. These ideas will be formed from social experience and/or information services and will produce images of urban areas. The basic visitor mental map of Pogradec is strongly related to the lake and the historic zone. The city is legible from the inhabitants’ point of view, but it lacks legibility from the visitors. The aim is to strengthen the mental map by creating distinct destination and clarifying routes. All important hot-spots of the region we take into consideration should be represented in the mental map. New attractive destinations should be introduced living a picture of a vivid public or realm in the minds of both locals and visitors. Since the lack of vitality and connectivity regards the city but also the regions, we think that transport can be seen as a tool to improve the actual conditions. Transport is an element included in every aspect of humans’ life. It is related closely to the in between spaces that is why our main purpose is to study the “Across”. Across, as tangible and non-tangible concept. The tangibility relates to the means of transport and infrastructure, whilst non-tangibility consists in experiences and itineraries.

street as public space
Changing the city- One street at a time Creating a compact and connected network system for the city, will create the possibilities for the street to become the real public space. Pogradec is the perfect place to enhance walkability, low city movements and street as a public space. It is rich of pedestrian streets and particular elements which enhance pedestrian-friendly environments. Nevertheless, we think that making use of small elements such as colors, pavement materials, greenery and urban furniture will enhance the character of these streets, making them vibrant and full of life. For this, we have worked on 6 street typologies, treating each of them according to their features and functions. We strongly believe that these interventions will enhance the city’s main representational element, creating places for people.

Park Station – A collective space We continue our study and design on a very important spot of the city of Pogradec. The bus station in Pogradec is a community space which needs an immediate intervention due to its problematic existing situation. It is a place which is very important to the city, but it is not well organized and it does not offer much to the residents of the city. Taking under consideration the fact that in the areas nearby there are no defined places for the community, we thought to create a transit station which is also e place to stay, a place to meet and a place for leisure. This way, the “park station does not only serve as a multimodal transport spot, but it is also an environment which adds to the surrounding areas. Thus, our main aim is to design a space which becomes a place.

INDUSTRIAL HERITAGE-memo park jona osmani, rudina belba
RECALL MEMORY _REUSE_ RECREATE _ PHYTOREMEDIATE The Industrial Site of “Gur i Kuq” in Pogradec, was established as an Iron –Nickel Mine, due to high resources of these minerals in the area. The site is relatively large in area and it is positioned in the hill nearby the village of Mëmëlisht. The area is “enclosed” by water: on the western side there is the lake of Pogradec surrounding the area, and in the N-E axis there are two springs of fresh water. After the 1990, many of the state properties were shut down and the land was then returned to the previous legal owners. This brought as a consequence, the destruction of the “Gur i Kuq”. Nowadays, the site is accessible from the center of Pogradec by car in only 6 minutes and by foot in 50 minutes; considering that the street is along the shore of the lake, this makes the walking, cycling and/or driving experience very pleasant. This means that the site can become a strong point of attention and attraction, this is due to its physical and social features. Because if its vicinity to the lake and the high topography the site’s potentials and its unique wilderness increase. As of the post industrial world developments, the most adequate way of reusing abandoned industrial site, is by revitalizing them, through temporary usage (restoration process). Many of the ways in which industrial sites can be reused through adaptive usage are: exhibition space, museum, theater, libraries, businesses, parks, apartments, etc. In our concept of Memory Recalling through Recreation, after the thorough analysis of the features of the site, there is a list of activities that the site “urges” to offer people. Recreational spaces in an area that overlooks the lake is of major attractiveness, whilst promoting the site “in ruin” state by hosting a museum of itself, through exhibiting the machineries and industrial equipments in the actual place where they were once used before. This would be one of the first “industrial museums” in Albania, where the housing of it would be its history making buildings. As a conclusion, the flexibility of the activities and functions and the decontamination through phytoremediation process, are the two key features that make up the revitalization process.

ART & CULTURE-city art denalda palla
Topic: Art and cultural Project. Importance of the Art and Cultural Program to the city and its
inhabitants.
Keywords: Multifunctional center/main axes/lake/boulevard/greenery
A New Face to the City This project tends to explore the great potentials to the city of Pogradec waterfront at the zone near the center of the city. Analyzing the city we identify 3 main axes representing the place: Lake/”Abandoned” Zone/ The City. Expansion of the city toward the lake is growing but then we have this middle zone which has put to a stop this development and divides the lake from the urban pattern of the city. ”Middle Zone” has a great potential and plays an important role to the city on the way it changes the view of the city by giving a New Face to Pogradec.
Why is this theme Art and Culture Implemented in Pogradec? Pogradec by being a place with natural and cultural heritage gives great opportunity to Art development, but the lack of spaces for expressing and experiencing Art are missing. By using the right tools which are the detailed programs of the Multifunctional Center creates a new place where people can pass and enjoy a great part of their day. Revitalizing this “abandoned” zone and buildings by giving functions, the city and citizens need. An Art Gallery/Exhibition Spaces/Indoor, Outdoor Activities/Theatre/New Structured Library and Different Educational Classes will be created. Creating a Place for everyone and for every season of the year. Giving life to the zone by “using” people and by fulfilling the needs.

ART & CULTURE- the sunshine room erka aliaj
The Sunshine Room The existing building of the Puppet Theatre in Pogradec is functioning as a Puppet Theatre, Lawyers office, youth centre and a part is without any function. It is located close to the city centre, next to the stadium, which makes it easily accessible to roads and facilities. The building is old, but in a stable condition, it has five entrances, one on the front (the main entrance), three on the sides and two on the back. The project consists on giving a new image and new functions the Puppet Theatre building in Pogradec. The volumetry of the building stays almost the same, but the interior go through major changes. The plans of existing building are reorganized, leading to a division of it in 3 parts : the Puppet Theatre, kindergarten and offices. New spaces are given to the Puppet Theatre to accommodate all its necessities, the offices are gathered in one part of the building and have a separate entrance. A new function purposed is the kindergarten one, which occupies the main space in the project. The name of the project was inspired from the separate spaces in the kindergarten, filled with kids playing, cooking and learning.

ADMINISTRATIVE FUNCTIONS selinay albayrak
Public buildings: Otherwise called as the ‘day clinics”, polyclinics are areas which provide both general and specialist examinations to outpatients; an outpatient is someone who uses the services of a hospital or a clinic in a full range but his needs do not necessarily require to stay the night. Pogradec is a small beautiful city which lacks the good qualities of services and is in need of a proper organization of those facilities to be used that grant its citizens a good life. One of the main issues that I thought we might have to consider was the healthcare service which is directly connected to the well-being of its people. As a result, I am proposing the reconstruction of Pogradec’s Polyclinic building as a solution to the healthcare program which currently is in a really bad condition. The site of the building is located in the western part of the city, in “Islam Dani” street otherwise known as the hospital’s street. Existing situation and the surrounding area I have estimated that the current location of the building is suitable for a polyclinic to be built considering the fact that many other facilities related to it are present such as: 1. The pharmacy 2. The main hospital available in the city 3. Greenery – reduction of noise 4. Main road access – easier to circulate My proposal includes a three floor building, totally reconstructed with new areas to be utilized for different purposes such as: 1. Courtyard 2. Administration offices 3. Healthcare services of different departments 4. Laboratories 5. Sanitary rooms

PUBLIC SPACES-morphosis blue erjada selko, merita maloku
The focus of our proposal is on the public space of Pogradec. Considering the fact that this city is one of the main touristic destinations of Albania, it has many potentials of developing this economic field in the future. In order to make this city a more attractive destination, it is important to firstly convert and transform its public spaces into more attractive ones, as long as the city is identified with them. The actual condition of the public spaces in Pogradec, suggests a disconnection between private and public, a kind of fragmentation that makes the private isolated and not usable by people who visit the public square. Especially this is felt in the atmosphere of the public square, located in front of the Municipality, where the political character of the buildings makes the outer space be fragmented from the inner one. Because of this condition, we propose the intervention into the ground floor experience, by making ground floors of these buildings be converted into open, floating, public spaces. In this way, the bigger space of the square connects with the embryonic open spaces of the city, thus creating an integrated net of public spaces. The proposal aims to explore the potentials of the city, like its potential to be a unique, sustainable, inviting and dynamic city. The unique city will be possible through a transformation of the main public square. The inviting city will be reached through an integrated network of open spaces and transformation of them into usable areas, while the sustainable city will become possible through an integration of the waterfront with the public space.

The site is located in the north east of Pogradec. The segment is considered very important for the development of tourism and economy.Within this corridor passes the main national road that connects Macedonia border with pogradec and korca .Our Group has undertaken the rehabilitation and improvement of Waterfront Pogradec. The current state of the site is not very developed and The existing situation is almost fully depreciated. The roads are partially amortized. The system of drainage of rain water is totally absent, surface water flow away with it by themselves terrain slope that created the body corrosion and damage to the site. We are focusing on the existing functions Pogradeci Waterfront; understanding the logistics and infrastructure of this functional area, as it is managed and how it is related, influenced and governed the development of the city. Adjusting our proposals and ideas for each space will be made taking into consideration what we offer these spaces in the interaction with (relief, roads, residential areas, public spaces, spaces intact). Also, it projected economic growth that is obtained from its implementation but always protecting the environment, taking into account the principle of “sustainable development” The analysis in the field, we have made update by identifying objects in the existing situation. Based on this analysis of the overall area we have proposed the accomodation ‘Guest House’ A guesthouse is generally a private home which has been converted for the dedicated and exclusive use of guest accommodation. The public areas of the establishment are for the exclusive use of the guests. The owner or manager either lives off-site, or in an entirely separate area within the property. The site includes complete lakeside village.

WATERFRONT- shifting alban met-hasani, rogert tafa
Waterfront means (Water meets earth, earth meets water). Based on this term we started approaching and analyzing focused on these two most important elements. Lake, Urban context, Greenery and small structures is our ‘foundation’ of our project. Our main idea is to have a multifunctional space in a way to bring more “life” in our site. This idea came from existing division of spaces also, because there are spaces somehow defined in their character. Example: Statues that are placed are somehow giving the character of monumental and memorial area etc. Paths, edges, connection of roads in our site, placing of high-rise buildings, placing of public buildings “speaks “a lot for urbanizing and this needs to be solved by us, in such a way that we decided to design with soft structures with ecologic materials in a way to “break” the sense of urbanism in our site and bring sensitivity of nature and space. Playing with textures as one of the most important elements that define the character of the site and its functions. Also playing with the levels we realized that using that idea we define privacy and publicity for each of environment designed in site. program

Aim of the project: Our theme is about the intervention on the waterfront. The reason we chose this one was because the waterfront is one of the most important features of the city and the lake ‘Lynchnidus’ is the main element which defines Pogradec. Our site includes the distance from hotel ‘’Turizmi’’ to hotel ‘’1 Maji’’. The typology of this site is different from the other ones because it is situated in a not too urbanized area. The beginning of the site is near the centre but then it becomes suburban, with a low density of buildings and many unbuilt parcels . Our site is not too diverse, we can see that the main elements are repeated through all the area, these are: the lake, the beach, the promenade, the park, the main road and then the buildings near. So our intervention will be on the beach ,on the promenade, on the park ,on the road and on the buildings situated near the road. Public goals will be our primary objective. Before starting with the ideas we made a general analysis of the typologies of different areas of the site and their condition. Our idea was to create multiple destinations and connect this destinations with each other. In this case we made a fragmentation according to the secondary roads in 6 areas, each with different characteristics. Our main goal was designing and detailing the four of six areas which have the highest potentials. Talking in general, all over the site will be included : bike paths, public baths and fitting rooms, snack bars, parking for bicycles, recycle bins, different landscape furnitures and greenery spaces with different plants.

The first area, it is located near the centre and from this reason we thought to eliminate the beach, in order for it to be in a more private and quite space.According to this we put the promenade closer to the lake so it can be used for walking and enjoying the view of the lake in different seasons. In the second area we thought to give importance to the children by designing spaces that could be used by them. We placed some circular structures with different colors and heights where children can dance during special events or jump from one level to the other. Near it is located a playground with benches for children or parents to sit and observe them. In this area a wooden path goes beyond the beach and borders an area on the water for the children to be safe when swimming. It also can be used for walking and enjoying the view above the water or jumping from the platform at the edge of it.The third area is known as “Cultural Area” due to the positioning near some cultural objects like: the puppet theatre, the school and the church. In this area we thought to place structures used for exhibition of paintings. The fourth area is the one which is near the stadium ‘’Gjergji Kycyku’’and for this reason it is dedicated to sport activities. In this part we wanted to develop water sports so we placed a wooden structure with the function of tribune seats for the people to watch boat races or other water sports.

year-round tourism A touristic village in the middle of Drilon and Saint Naum, Tushemisht is an idyllic retreat space flowing over water in time. Through the understanding of the existing urban fabric and what the village offers, this project seeks to achieve a unique urban identity. A generic strategic project aims to a attain coherence through punctual themes and fragmented experiences of everyday. While contributing to the preservation and improvement of local, vernacular and regional values, the project introduces a general strategy for accommodation as a leading theme and attraction of tourists through different means. The aim is to bring back former unity of life through integrating the daily life of the local residents with tourists.

A key axis of the idea is the proposal of three typologies of guest houses, similar in logic but offering different experiences within. A revitalization of what can be called less populated part of the village is achieved by continuous connection between the interior space and the environment. The design maintains a careful balance between the traditional and the modern. The project approach creates a universal and timeless fragmented coherence that will appeal to visitors of all ages. A foreground negotiating with the background interconnecting presence and memory.

Retreat Zone: After the first phase of the Guest Housing in Tushemisht project we proceeded with the further development and detailing of the houses in the retreat zone. Positioned along a street parallel to the entrance and the water stream, it has the most favorable properties for the tourists, but also for the future development of the village. While trying to bring back the village’s identity from the new invasive constructions near the lake shore, this project proposes three typologies of houses appropriate for various groups of people and periods of staying, that vary throughout the year, along with some public spaces and a cafeteria. Each of the houses, besides trying to fulfill their function as guest houses, incorporate water into them and their landscape as a feature that is characteristic of houses in Tushemisht. This water feature is traditionally used for washing, cooking and cooling purposes, but also for aesthetic purposes nowadays. The typologies try to be both ‘rustic’ and somewhat modern in shape and materials to resemble the actual atmosphere in Tushemisht. The design and usage of the existing houses has influenced this process. These guest houses are run by the owners who share them with the tourists in different seasons, especially in summer and winter. As such, the houses have spaces to accommodate all needs, shared and separate living spaces for owners and guests depending on the case.

This project consist on three main projects. The first one is the Landscape proposal which lies on four zones on the village: near the Lake, across the river, the center and near the cinema building.Four of these zones are connected to each other and create an interactive corridor for the citizens. The second one is the Adaptive reuse project which consist of refunctionalisation of the abandoned buildings. The location of the buildings lies in the whole village, through the main road which is very frequented from a citizens and tourists. The third one consists on the project of the Guest houses, which is actually a very used form of accommodation in Tushemisht, but the project aims to spread it even more. All of the buildings in Tushemisht are considered to be guest houses, and are divided in two typologies. The second part of the project is a series of houses behind the church, which are abandoned and are thought to be turned in to a hostel divided into 4 spaces.

Landscape Proposal: The landscape project lies along the entire village, creating a touristic guide composed of different activities of importance to the revitalization of green spaces, with the aim of transforming the village into a more attractive atmosphere. Park on the entrance of the village invites the citizens to take a walk across the river through the pedestrian route which leads to the other park across the river near the center that is designed also to offer restaurant service nearby. Third park is located near two buildings: Info point which gives extra info on different activities and the Cinema which offer cafeteria service and also cultural activities. Part of the center has been made a small intervention, adding a few seats down the existing trees and the difference between Patern street of pedestrians and cars. These three parks have elements in common but in particular small hills with different heights and their wood seats near, to create a relaxing environment for residents and tourists.

Tushemisht, being a small village, whose population is constantly being reduced, due to emigration, offers quite a lot of unused and abandoned buildings, most of them being in a very bad condition. These buildings were around sixty years old, and being traditional Tushemishtian buildings, it was a waste to replace them with something new, or to completely ruin them. So we decided to make the building reusable, by keeping the faรงade and giving new functions and creating new spaces inside. Each of these buildings are fortunately near very important landmarks, a thing that made us decide to give them public or semi-public functions.

A very interesting detail about the citizens of Tushemisht is that they all grow their own vegetables and fruits in their backyards, produce them inside their houses, and sell those produced in front of their houses. To not ruin this tradition we decided that none of these building need to be turned into markets. Most of the buildings are made out of two stories, usually the first one being around sixty centimeters wide and made out of stone, and the second one being thirty centimeters wide and made out of bricks. The most traditional Tushemishtian house has a very interesting detail inside. It has a very narrow canal in the first floor where the water runs. This detail made the city called the small Venice, being referenced from the water in the canals.

The site is located on the old part of the city of Pogradec, between river and the residential zone. There are 3 houses built by red old brick’s : 1st one is Lasgush Poradeci’s house (Albanian writer) , 2nd and 3rd are properties of other citizens. - The 1st house is Lasugshi’s house that is going to be a museum. Offering people a chance to see where he lived and where did he get the inspiration. The landscape outside has some benches and a pavement made of little stones (mosaic). Lasgushi’s house is connected with 2 other houses by a square as a public space. - The 2nd house or the house in the middle has a public access on front of the square ( on the ground floor it’s a cafeteria and a breakfast fast food )and the private entrance is in front of the river ( so the owner have access to the kitchen of the fast food and they have access at the stairs for the 2nd floor that is for the residents). - The 3rd house also has a public ac-SWOT ANALYSE cess on the front of the square ( on the ground floor is a exhibition space ) and the entrance in front of the river is used by owners ( residents on the first floor), the tourists ( there are rooms for the guests on the ground floor and the first floor) . - The wall close to the last house has 6 sculptures , representing Lasgushi’s work, Mitrush Kuteli’s work and a painter Taso’s work.

The site is located on the quiet periphery of “Old city” of Pogradec, the appropriate zone for accommodation of the tourists , daily visitors etc. The reason why we decided to intervene this part of the precinct is that the area was very good to be abonded and let that part unused. After we decided to work on that space we thought to keep the road as it was because of it’s installations as water supplies, electricity etc. Except the road everything else was reconstructed. While the site was on the peripheral zone of the old city we designed complex in itself. We proposed eight structures with different functions as: workshop, market, cafeteria , traditional restaurant, shop, bakehouse. Meanwhile on the road that we kept from the beginning we constructed some spaces that are used as guest areas, in the same time are used by residents, simultaneously we organized the road in very appropriate condition to match the design of the houses that were constructed and for inhabitants.Every structure has it’s personal share, containing greenness, parking areas and the play ground.

SPORT-pogradec arena egi meti, inri malltezi
Our project is focused on the soccer stadium (arena) of Pogradec. Taking in consideration the actual situation of the site and stadium itself we took the responsibility to design a new and modern stadium for the city with all the neccessary infrastructure for the development of sport activities in the city. The actual stadium is in poor conditions and the facilities inside the stadium are in poor conditions too. The soccer field for the younger ages is also in poor conditions without any facilities serving to it. The indoor sportfacilityislocatedinsideanoldbuildingandalsohaslackoffacilities. Taking in consideration the problems that are present in the site and also the problems that people there face while doing sports we came with our proposal for a better area collecting all the sport activities in one building and offering the neccessary facilities for all the ages. The first step towards the new design in the creation of the big building that is collecting all the sports together. Taking in consideration the actual design of the stadium we hold the idea of only two main tribunes for the fans, the East and West tribunes. The North and South tribunes are going to be demolished and in their place are going to be constructed the office building with other facilities in the South part and the indoor sport facility in the North. With the new design of the stadium we propose an increase in the number of seating places for the fans inside the stadium even if the stadium is smaller in dimension this was made possible by a better positioning of the seating places and taking in consideration the requirements of FIFA for stadium constructions.

The soocer stadium has its facilities located in the ground floor of the east and west part. There are several entrances in order to avoid big crowds and other problems. Since we considered making a modern stadium for the city we also thought of integrating elements that are far from what we are used to see in our stadiums. One of this elements is located in each of the entrances of the fans. This elements is the turnstile. This element is used for avoiding the long crowds caused by the manual check of the tickets and give the possibility of a faster entrance of the fans also there is an automatic count of the number of the fans present since each ticket has its unique code. On the ground floor are also the entrances for the soccer players, located on the West facade of the building and all the neccessary facilities for them. Besides the players big importance is given even to the press with the press room on the ground floor and the comentary rooms for the press located in the first floor of the West tribune. The west tribune also has its VIP are located in its middle. On the ground floor of the west building are also located shops and coffee stores which are available for the fans during the game days but also everyday for the people around the stadium. On the East facade on the ground floor is located a modern restaurant, a wellness center (SPA), a Pharmacy store and also the youth players facilities (changing rooms). The North part of the building is the indoor arena mainly for basketball and voleyball. This building has two main entrances. One of the entrances is for the gym in which are done different activities such as boxing and other force sports and the other entrance is for the supporters and fans of basketball and voleyball. Both of the spaces (gym and basketball) are equipped with all the neccessary equippments and facilities.

Moving on, the South facade is were all the decisions about sport activities happen. There are located the offices on the ground floor, respectively the soccer office, voleyball office and the basketball office. There are also present other facilities such as the archive room, meeting room, staff room, antidoping room and lab. The entrire first floor is the gym which is available for the players and also can be frequented by other people of the city. The second floor is only for social activities such as bowling, table tennis, biliardo and other activities. The first and second floor have their entrance separated from the offices through a ramp located on the side of the building. Our idea was not only to take care of the professional part of the sport (soccer stadium) and its facilities but also to integrate it into the area so people could be there everyday and not just during the sport events. That why we decided do create public spaces which can be frequented by people everyday and be part of their everyday routine. There are 4 public spaces where the main one is near the main entrance of the stadium on the West facade. There is the big plazza which is for the big crowds of fans and there are also other spaces which are availble for elder and younger people like the wooden benches, and the playgrounds for children. The north, south and east public space also have the benches and the playgrounds. The integration of the wooden benches which can be frequented by elder people and the playgrounds frequented by zounger ones is in order to make a interaction between different people and to improve their social life.
