Are You Handling

Hazardous Drugs? Exposure to antineoplastic drug contamination can occur at all stages from compounding to reconstitution through inhalation, skin contact, unintentional handto-mouth ingestion or needle stick and sharps injury. Routine handling of hazardous drugs in pharmacy has been shown to lead to higher risks of chromosomal aberrations1. The acute effects of exposure to hazardous drugs can include skin rashes and nausea, while chronic effects extend to infertility, miscarriages, birth defects, leukemia and other cancers2. Numerous studies show that classic syringe and needle techniques almost universally result in contamination, including droplets, leakage from vial stoppers and aerosol generation3. For pharmacists working with hazardous drugs, this contamination can be a significant health risk. 1. 2. 3.

The TNT, known as EPSA “Trainer’s factory”, is the event during which EPSA train motivated pharmaceutical students to become Soft Skills Trainers. It consists of a week-long event where at least four experienced Trainers share and pass their knowledge to a soon-to-be new generation of Trainers. In 2019, TNT took place in Hradec Kralove, Czech Republic, from the 26th of July until the 4th of August.

Trainers on Tour (ToT)

Trainers on Tour is the event that takes the Training Project to countries where it’s not well implemented or where it’s not even known. This year’s event happened in May in four European countries: Greece, Bulgaria, Turkey, and Romania. Two EPSA Trainers delivered 26 hours of soft skills trainings during 10 days and successfully reached over 100 pharmaceutical students and inspired a few to become soft-skills Trainers as well.

Train the Trainers (TtT)

+4000 participants in TW

Train the Trainers (TtT) consists of gathering as many of EPSA Trainers as possible and promote their development with whatever sessions they might need. During the 5th EPSA TtT that happened in Brussels, Belgium, from the 22nd to the 24th of February, ten motivated EPSA Trainers joined ten trainers form JADE to share their experience and learn together, improve and further develop themselves.

Training Week (TW)

18

The Training week happened in the mid of February, from the 18th to the 24th. During the week, EPSA motivated both trainers and local associations to organise trainings at their national levels and to take on the challenges EPSA prepared for them. According to our register, in this week, more than 4 000 pharmaceutical students participated in soft skills trainings across Europe.

European Pharmaceutical Students’ Association

Representing the voice of European pharmaceutical youth EPSA advocates and engages on healthcare-related topics as well as youth-related. With this, EPSA aims to collaborate with professional and students’ organisations to showcase the current opinion of European pharmaceutical students on important topics at the European level and to represent their voice to stakeholders throughout Europe.

Position Papers and Statements of Opinion In 2019, EPSA was actively advocated for the inclusion of eHealth, soft skills, and One Health in undergraduate education, increasing students’ mobility, raising awareness of antimicrobial resistance, and the importance of vaccination.

In April 2019, EPSA released a Statement of Opinion on eHealth and Digital Skills. With this, EPSA acknowledged the importance of incorporating the recent advances in technology into healthcare and education. In September 2019, EPSA released a Policy Paper on the same topic. The Policy Paper was developed according to the Survey conducted by EPSA in Autumn 2018, which collected 587 responses from pharmaceutical students across Europe.

Educational and Professional Affairs Advocacy Platform In November 2019, EPSA released a Press Release on European Antibiotic Awareness Day (EAAD) in collaboration with EHSAS ( European Healthcare Students’ Associations’ Summit). This Press Release highlighted the problem of antimicrobial resistance as one of the main issues that healthcare is currently facing.

EPSA established the Educational and Professional Affairs Advocacy Platform, where Member Associations and the students they represent express their opinions, steer EPSA’s future directions, and exchange good practices among each other. The Platform currently has 50 Representatives from 44 European countries.

TWINNET

Students’ Guide

As one of the oldest and most popular EPSA projects, Twinnet has been working with the purpose of enhancing mobility among EPSA members through group exchange projects. During the year 2019, 22 Twinnets were organised between 23 EPSA Members Associations and enabled over 350 students to have an exchange experience abroad. By involving in the project, EPSA members had the opportunity to explore other cultures and share knowledge and experiences while focusing on educational components.

Students’ Guide is a platform developed to ease the access of European pharmacy students to the knowledge of how to apply for an Erasmus+ programme, where to go for Erasmus+, and how studying and living conditions are like in different European cities. During the year 2019, EPSA has recruited 42 Ambassadors, each of them responsible for continuously updating the information about their cities. Another task of theirs is to be available and responsive to the incoming students’ questions before their arrival and during their stay.

Through the interprofessional Twinnet, which is organised together with students from other healthcare sectors, EPSA ensures that the collaboration with external parties is endorsed and interprofessional education introduced. Last year, EPSA organised two interprofessional Twinnets with the students from the European Medical Students’ Association (EMSA).

20

Currently, the Students’ Guide includes data and information about 32 countries, where concrete information about studying abroad can be found.

Humanitarian Mobility Project A humanitarian project provides material or logistical assistance to a group of people or a country in need of aid. Projects vary among those necessitated by human-made disasters, natural disasters, poverty, and aid development. Through this project, EPSA provides members with an opportunity to travel, volunteer, learn about human rights, and improve themselves through experiencing solidarity and care for others.

European Pharmaceutical Students’ Association

Individual Mobility Project The Individual Mobility Project (IMP) is one of EPSA’s most significant long-term mobility projects since 2008. IMP involves many EPSA external partners and allows pharmacy students and recent graduates (maximum 24 months from graduation) to gain experience in a new environment and acquire a broader understanding of different types of work in the pharmaceutical field from the ones in their home country. It focuses on initiating international careers, leading to an exchange of international experiences and improved pharmaceutical services in Europe. All this is being achieved by collaborating with various organisations from small and large pharmaceutical companies to academia, hospitals, NGOs, spreading their vacant positions through EPSA’s network.

2019 the project offered IMP Placements in Fresenius Kabi, Germany; PrimeVigilance, Czech Republic, Croatia, and Serbia; WSMI – World Self Medication Industry, Switzerland; Omrix NV/SA Johnson&Johnson with an average of 15-20 applicants per placement. IMP offered placements in a wide range of pharmaceutical fields such as pharmacovigilance, office management and supply chain, strategic marketing and portfolio management, regulatory affairs, pharmaceutical compounding, etc.

Apart from the IMP Placements, the Central IMP Coordinator works for the professional development of the National IMP Coordinators. For that purpose, several Online Activities were organised: ten online trainings, two live IMP Board meetings at 42nd EPSA Annual Congress and 16th Autumn Assembly and several workshops, where an average of 15 NIMPs attended each activity. In October 2019, IMP Action Groups was created as a pilot project within IMP. Three Action Groups were established: IMP Social Media and Promotion Strategies AG, Professional Development of the NIMPs AG, IMP Acquisition AG. Each group has 7-9 NIMPs as members, where one of the NIMPs for each group is the leader.

Besides the mentoring itself, the project also included complementary online workshops that aimed to provide a wider insight into professional development. In this case, five online activities were organised: soft skills training on time management, Chat with Professionals, webinar on how to get involved in the research and development at the start of the career, case studies, and the sessions prepared and held by mentees. During the mentoring project, mentees understood the variety of roles which a pharmacist can occupy in the pharmaceutical sector and assessed which field would fit their skills and passions the most, gained precious insights and skills which they will be able to use in their professional careers, broaden their professional network, improved their CVs, learned how to write a motivation letter and how to act during a job interview.

Career Fair

Career Page

Career Fair is the EPSA project that provides students with an opportunity to gather information on professional development opportunities through direct contact with professional entities. It aims to facilitate the interaction between students and professionals, help students to engage at the professional level while seeking for career guidance and professional opportunities, promote multiple personal and professional development, and strengthen the RC-Sponsors and EPSA-Partners collaborations.

The Career Page has become a relevant part of EPSA’s official website in 2017, with the main purpose of serving as a useful platform, where pharmaceutical students may find valuable and accurate information on the numerous professional paths they may follow after graduating. It was designed to provide information on the core tasks and skills required for each professional area as well as to provide a better understanding of the daily work and challenges of a professional working in the specific field through testimonials. Currently, the page consists of a wide variety of possible professional paths such as community pharmacy, hospital pharmacy, academia, clinical research in Contract Research Organisations (CROs), industry and NGOs, and trade organisations.

In 2019, two Career Fairs that happened at the 42nd EPSA Annual Congress in Sofia, Bulgaria, and 16th EPSA Autumn Assembly in Poreč, Croatia connected more around 80 pharmaceutical students with the more than 40 pharmaceutical companies, industries, and organisations.

Career Week The EPSA Career Week is a full circle project that showcases preparations for pursuing a specific position, recruitment process, and prospects through one week of online activities. It serves as a platform to promote less explored pathways within the pharmaceutical job market and provide pharmaceutical students with an opportunity to get closer to a particular field in the pharmaceutical profession. Career Week started on 25th and ended on the 31st of March 2019. During the seven days full of online activities, EPSA members learned about work in NGOs and research departments, connected with the professionals from the fields and while attending an online training, heard how to improve their CVs and tackle certain situations during the job interview. Besides, in 2019 the new branch of the project was developed - Career Week - Local Edition. The special guidelines were written to assist EPSA Members in educating students about work possibilities that they may pursue after completing a pharmacy degree on the local levels.
