Forecasting is an important tool in business, we have witnessed several leaders and professionals give near perfect business forecast. At the beginning of every fiscal year, many organizations do their best to make a forecast for the new year, this helps to strategically make plans. While this is great, there are so many events in our lives and businesses that we cannot predict, a perfect example is the covid-19 pandemic.

Numerous situations that are not planned for will occur as they are occurring now, it’s obvious that there is no absolute surety about plans and forecast; of all that is unsure, one thing however is sure and that will be captured in the word “change”. Disruption will happen, shocking events will happen, powers will change, policies will change, systems will change, processes will change and all this will continue to affect the way we live, work, war, love, engage, and do business.

So, what do we do in times like this? how do we engage a world filled with uncertainties and absolute certainty of change? There are so many things we can do and one of them is to clarify between events, outcomes and resolves as we make decisions.

This is the time to understand the dynamics of events and outcomes and resolve as a tool to navigating this present world.

A definition of event according to the dictionary is “what has happen or taken place” for example covid-19; a definition of outcome is “the result of something or may be the consequence”, for example people We cannot choose the events we find ourselves in, they happen to us, we cannot choose the outcomes, they are a consequence of what has happened, but we can choose our resolve.

dying or dwindling economy because of covid-19 and one definition of resolve is “to settle a matter or find solution and decide on a course of action”.

We cannot choose the events we find ourselves in, they happen to us, we cannot choose the outcomes, they are a consequence of what has happened, but we can choose our resolve. While the event can be the same thing, and the outcomes are varying in effect, the resolve is totally in our jurisdiction.

There are different types of resolves different people will make in the face of an event and herein lies the difference between those who practice optimism and those who don’t. What is optimism and how is it practiced? Please read further.

Types of Resolves

Hopeful vs Hopeless resolve

A hopeful resolve is taken by people who expect to experience an eventual positive outcome from a situation irrespective of the present negative outcome; this paradigm aids the decision to keep moving, searching and influences strategic action that might help the situation in the long run. A hopeless resolve is taken by people who expect nothing positive from the situation, all that will be seen is the negativity of the present and all decisions will be made based on the prevailing negativity. A hopeless resolve is what leads to further negativity like depression and suicide.

Continuity vs Discontinuity Resolve

A continuity resolve comes from the mindset of people who are able to see that the present situation is not an end, such that no matter what is going on, there can be an advancement, there is a tomorrow and it will come with good tidings. This mindset breeds creativity, adaptability and resilience.

A discontinuity resolve comes from the mindset of people who cannot see any form of advancement from the present situation, they see an end and do not have any motivation to continue, they lack the ability to navigate the present situation and unfortunately give up.

Possibility vs Impossibility Resolve

A possibility resolve is taken by people who sees prospect and potential gains irrespective of the challenges at hand, they do not allow the present challenge blind them from the possibilities available; while the world saw the impossibilities or a metal flying into the air and staying there at will defying the law of gravity, the Wright Brothers kept seeing possibilities and made a resolve to keep researching and keep trying, eventually the possibility they saw was achieved. Possibility is always there, but do you see it?

The Impossibility Resolve is taken by people who sees failure, they do not see any likelihood of a situation getting better, they cannot see any form of probability, their resolve is empowered by the fact that it is practically impossible to solve a present challenge, it is impossible to move ahead and it is impossible to find a solution. The see impossibilities and make a resolve to end it. Their creativity is marred and they throw in the towel.

Inclusive Based vs Isolated based Resolve

An inclusive based resolve is the type of resolve that comes from the mind of people who see a challenge from a widespread perspective. They see the present challenge as a general challenge, not a challenge affecting them alone, they find solace from the fact that the challenge is general and several people are looking for solutions to the problem, they find safety in the pervasiveness of the situation. This helps them get curious, seek collaboration, explore possibilities, reach out more and learn more.

An isolated based resolve is the type of resolve that comes from the mind of people who see a challenge from an isolated perspective, they believe it is as a result of what they have done or not done, they beat themselves for doing the wrong thing, for making the wrong decision, for making mistakes, for not preparing enough etc. they can go on and on about what they did not do well, what they should have done well and find no solution to the challenge.

Optimism is the ability to proactively take a perspective of hope and possibilities in any situation you find yourself… (six seconds) particularly challenging situations. If you look around you, you will see evidence of possibilities from challenges that people have found themselves in and you will also see evidence of impossibilities from the same challenges; this means possible and impossible outcomes are available in the horizon, this leaves us with the power to choose which perspective we want to take, you can proactively take a perspective of hope and possibilities, this will aid hopeful, continuity, possibility and inclusive resolve and you will see your business, tasks, relationships and wellbeing advance irrespective of the situation you find yourself.
