The Equestrian Almanac is a dream come true for our work family. Living the equestrian lifestyle and knowing how important our horses are to us, inspires the EA team to be on the look-out every day for what people are searching for, what they want, what is staying true to tradition or new thoughts, and for products that have improved our sport. (Thank goodness our Wool show jackets have been re-purposed as blazers!)

“We love everything EQ U E S T R I A N and are honoring our exceptional sport, it’s enthusiasts and the horses who make it all possible.
”
The EA is a terrific branding publication for equestrian businesses and the riders, trainers, and enthusiasts that want the best of everything. As well as for other businesses who want to brand their name to a demographic that no other publication has access to. Our readership and demand has grown exponentially, which makes us so very happy, thank you! A little idea that has now grown up, which filled a need, is now preparing for an East Coast edition in sunny Florida.

STAL WILTEN by Pam Maley
W
ith gorgeous horses and a fantastic facility in Nieuwleusen, Netherlands, Stal Wilten (‘Stal’ is ‘Stable’ in Dutch) is taking a blossoming brand into its tenth year of developing talented sport horses. From striking images where the majesty of the horse pops in a black background, as seen on this issue’s cover, to great action shots over Stal Wilten’s collection of cool jumps, to the use of innovative and modern names like Storm Watch, Jackie O, and Namaste, Stal Wilten knows how to present a horse. The result is memorable brilliance.
But as we know in this world of competition, the proof is in the results: making good matches, achieving goals, and ultimately winning. And Stal Wilten has a track record of success. Having taken charge of the family business, Roy Wilten is in direct contact with all clients, and he handles the business of selling horses internationally by video or in person with integrity and forthrightness, resulting in grateful and satisfied buyers. With Stal Wilten’s exceptional reputation, their professionalism has to measure up, and by all accounts it goes beyond expectations. T r a i n e r s | 21
The gorgeous jumps and outdoor arena at Stal WIlten.
THE WILTEN STORY
As the second generation of professional horsemen, Roy Wilten is known to say that he was raised in a barn, and he was. Clearly their home away from home, you can find the Wiltens in the ‘stal’. most of the day and into the night. Stal Wilten has always been a family affair, and it has been Roy over the last few years who has ‘taken the reins’ and driven the family business into the mainstream. As a result of his efforts, not just in marketing, but also in producing truly top-notch, well-trained horses, the name is known as a premier location in Europe to purchase hunters, equitation mounts, and jumper prospects. Its doors opened in 2006, the realization of a long-time dream. Roy’s uncle, Jan Willem Wilten had a love of horses that was bigger than life and shared by his brother Paul, Roy’s father. An international competitor in his own right, Paul worked 22 | S t a l W i l t e n
at the legendary Schockemohle Stables in Germany, and in 1982 he opened his own five-star riding school in Zwolle, Netherlands, specializing in Show Jumping and Dressage. It was here that Roy found his passion. Roy rode at an international level with his ponies, and then as a young rider, and gained valuable experience as a working student in Spain, Canada, and the United States. 2006 marked a change in focus for the Wiltens, as the family moved into the development of sport horses in their present location in Nieuwleusen. Like their marketing, communication, customer service, and their horses, their facility is extraordinary. With an indoor and outdoor arena, both state-of-the-art with beautiful jumps depicting the Dutch lifestyle and other European landmarks; a Eurocizer; grass and sand paddocks; and a lunging arena; it has all the amenities to produce winners.
T r a i n e r s | 23
THE WILTEN EXPERIENCE
Fellow riders like Victoria Colvin and Sean Leckie are often invited to come and help ride the horses, another way of spreading the word and sharing knowledge. With an eye toward the future, Roy and his father are always finding ways to improve Stal Wilten. At the stable in The Netherlands, there are approximately ten horses and ponies for sale at any given time, but to better serve the American market, they also have horses in North Carolina with Daniel Geitner, and in New York with Jenna Weinfurt, First Blue, LLC. Roy also escorted a select group of horses to Wellington, Florida to compete in the 2016 Winter Equestrian Festival. Sandman turns heads with his talent wrapped in a buckskin coat.
Roy has an eye for beauty and brilliance. He enjoys every step of the process from finding a horse to matching the rider with the right mount. He also is drawn to athletic horses of a different color, like Sandman and this issue’s cover model, Golddigger. Clients are welcome year-round, and Stal Wilten is always happy to make any arrangements necessary to meet the traveling needs of both people and horses, to ensure that their journeys are as comfortable and stress-free as possible. As Gina McKim’s testimonial explains, “We have had a wonderful experience working with Roy Wilten. Buying a horse sight unseen from another country can be a scary prospect, but Roy took the time to answer all of our questions and help us find the perfect horse. Our daughter is looking forward to showing Kenan in hunters and equitation — he is awesome! We look forward to buying our next horse from Stal Wilten!”
Golddigger showing his skills with Victoria Colvin along for the ride. 24 | S t a l W i l t e n
With a name change to Kenan, this colorful ‘McDreamy’ horse is the perfect match for Elizabeth McKim who has been named ‘one to watch’ in the equitation and hunters for her outstanding performances. Kristen Hiller, who has horses with John French, spoke highly of her experience with Stal Wilten. “Thank you, Roy Wilten, for the most amazing horse. Foreign Affair is my greatest gain. At four years old he is winning championships in the hunter ring against top horses at the HITS Circuit in Thermal, California. You have a great eye for picking beautiful horses with great dispositions and talent. It is wonderful to have a sense of trust when buying a horse. Thanks again and let us know if you come across any more winning hunters.”
Jan Humphrey rode McDreamy in Holland, now winning in the U.S. with the show name Kenan.
Top-level California trainers Hope Glynn and Nick Karazissis are satisfied customers as well. “Stal Wilten has amazing horses and a great setup that allows the horses to be ready to move quickly into the American show ring,” says Hope. “They have been very easy to deal with and I am very happy with the quality of the horses I have bought there. Roy and his family have a great eye for horses and I know if I end up at his place I’ll come back with a winner!” As the title suggests, every aspect of Stal Wilten embodies ‘Beauty and Brilliance.’ See for yourself!

Michelle Parker started jumping at age 11 in her hometown of Tucson, Arizona. She moved to Southern California to train with Ronnie Freeman her senior year of high school and began riding horses full-time through college. After her first big win at Indio 15 years ago, Parker jump-started her winning Grand Prix career with her horse, Wisby D. In addition to multiple Grand Prix wins and placings, Wisby D and Parker also laid down a memorable four-fault round at the 2000 Spruce Meadows Shell Cup Derby. Parker started Cross Creek West in 2004 where she trains a select client base of A-Circuit Hunter/Jumpers. Parker believes genuine hard work, not a “Rolls Royce” horse, is the key to success and pushes her riders to put in the extra effort. She is consistently ranked in the Top Ten of the Pacific Coast’s Leading Riders and continues to compete at the Grand Prix level. According to Parker, the most rewarding part of her career is bringing along a horse from a young age and seeing them reach their full potential. She also enjoys watching horses she has sold succeed with their new owners. In 2015, Parker is looking forward to moving up some quality young horses to the next difficulty level as they mature.

Following a fourth place finish at the North American Young Rider’s Championship, Bennet was named to the Canadian Eventing Team Long List. They were two-time members of the Silver Medal Team at the Pan American Eventing Championships and have represented the Canadian Equestrian Team in the Olympics twice. Her exposure to European top sport both in training and competing was an opportunity of a lifetime which fueled her own drive to become the best rider she can be. After accepting a sponsorship she relocated to Southern CA in 2006. Verena has had many successes competing at FEI levels and coaching through Grand Prix. In 2011 she coached two riders who qualified for the Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico. Archie Cox found his love for horses at a young age. His grandmother shared with him her love of horses and at age 7 Archie and his sister Suzie convinced their parents to get a horse. Archie was a determined young rider and set his sights on the equitation ring, showing in the Maclay and USET Show Jumping Talent Search (which he brought home a gold in). Archie would later make his way west and work for Karen Healey for eight and a half years. He was able to take a lot away from his experience with Healey which set him up to successfully begin Brookway Stables where his students have taken home more than 40 national titles. The foundation of Archie’s program is building confidence in his students by focusing on the basics. With an innate ability to pair horse and rider and as his student’s biggest fan, he is able to bring out the best in his horses and riders and allow them to reach their full potential.

IF HORSES COULD TALK… by Jackie McFarland

very equestrian knows horses’ personalities are as diverse and individual as our own. They have good and bad days like any humans, with quirks and habits that endear them even closer to our hearts. Equestrian Almanac (EA) was curious — if our horses could talk, what might we hear? This series explores the vociferous and often humorous voices of our equine friends. I know she’s an evil snake but she is oh so cool. ea: What are your dreams for the future? b: I want to go to international shows all over the world and perform like a superstar. The $1 Million dollar Grand Prix in Thermal, CA this March is next on my list!

ith visions of the Longines Masters of Hong Kong still dancing in our heads, all eyes now turn to Long Beach, the new location of the third annual Longines Masters of Los Angeles. Having recently undergone a revolutionary $40 million dollar upgrade, the Long Beach Convention Center combines larger-than-life spaces with innovative lighting and state-of-the-art sound design. The Long Beach arena will reflect the ambiance of the Longines Masters with style.
Located in the heart of downtown Long Beach, show jumping fans can walk to first-class accommodations, shopping and dining, visit the Queen Mary, the Long Beach Aquarium and, of course, see the only event in the Los Angeles area with this level of elite competition. 62 | S h o w J u m p i n g
When asked about the new venue, event producer EEM told us that it’s a new and exciting challenge, and that they are ready for the adventure. Though they’re keeping mum for now about specifics, they assure us that “all will be revealed soon.” Considering the panache they’ve exhibited in
the previous two years, we anticipate something spectacular.
Gold Cup and the return of the Charity Pro-Am, were a part of the 2015 event.
Of course the visual brand of the Masters Grand Slam series will remain the same, matched only with the other two legs of this series: the Longines Masters of Paris in December and the Longines Masters of Hong Kong in February.
EEM also announced, in the fall of 2015, the FEI-sanctioned Longines Masters Grand Slam Series, inspired by the legendary tournaments of the Grand Slam in tennis. An intercontinental trilogy (Paris, Hong Kong, Los Angeles), any rider that can win all three legs is eligible for a €1 million bonus, a rider that can post two consecutive wins earns a €500,000 bonus, and a rider with two non-consecutive wins earns a €250,000 bonus.
Through the innovative vision of Christophe Ameeuw, founder and CEO of EEM, each of the Masters Grand Slam’s three locations encompasses a luxurious yet intimate presentation of sport, fashion, and art. The signature Longines sophistication exudes equestrian elegance while thirty of the world’s best rider/horse combinations compete for ranking points, large purses and the title of Longines Masters Grand Prix of Los Angeles champion. The inaugural Longines Masters of Los Angeles, held in 2014, was the first major international equestrian event in the area since the 1984 Olympics. An instant success, the event was ranked the number one indoor competition by the North American Riders Group. Innovative classes and concepts, including the magnificent Gucci

BONDS THAT WIN SUCCESSFUL HORSE & RIDER PARTNERSHIPS by Jackie McFarland and Alexis Meadows

eveloping and maintaining a connection with horses is one of the pivotal points to success across every equestrian discipline. An intimate understanding of your equine partner, and the most talented ones are often the most quirky, is essential to creating a bond that wins. These horse and rider pairs are a sampling of these unique connections in the challenging realm of grand prix show jumping.

west coast wonders Will Simpson and The Dude
name: age: height:
Will Simpson 57 5’8”
And in the Driver’s Seat...
Growing up in the Midwest, Simpson’s connection with horses started when his mom had signed his sister up for riding lessons and he went along. Discovering he loved to ride, he was all about horses from that point on. After spending some time with the legendary Rodney Jenkins on the East Coast, Will moved to the West Coast in 1983 and has been there ever since. talent: As the anchor rider in the 2008 Olympics, Simpson clinched the Gold Medal for the USA. Simpson’s favorite part of the sport is the speed. He would love to be on the Olympic Team in Rio de Janeiro this summer.
The Other Half of the Winning Equation... barn name: The Dude. Will bought
the horse for his client Nicoletta Heide68 | Bonds That Win

The Dude breed: Oldenburg age: 10 height: 16.2h gger, but she shelved her riding boots for the time being and offered him the ride. She named him and it stuck. Simpson says of the Oldenburg gelding, “We bought him from Harriet Bunker, who worked with Rodney Jenkins with me in the 80’s. They imported him as a two-year-old. He had done some 1.40m and 1.45 classes when we bought him and was just turning eight.” talent: He has a great jump! He’s a good balance of everything you need to win. He’s got scope for the height, great form, and lots of power. He’s not naturally fast, but is so rideable and in tune with me that when I see the inside track he’s right there with me. how the partnership jelled:
Last winter we started him at Thermal in the small Grand Prix classes (1.45m -
1.50m) to see if he might be competitive by mid-circuit maybe. It turned out he was more than ready and began winning right from the start. And we kept on winning, it was an amazing winter. We moved up and started in the1.60m at the end of last year and he was great. He’s still a little green at the game but is very similar to Carlsson (Simpson’s Olympic mount). was it love at first sight or did it take time? It was love
at first sight. When you see a horse that is brave, careful, sound and rideable, that is what you need to work with. what is your favorite trait and least favorite trait of this horse? My favorite trait is his
ability to run against the clock on a daily basis and he doesn’t get flat. My least favorite is that he is spoiled rotten in the barn — he’s a nut in his stall now.
Very demanding, but luckily fine everywhere else. do you have any special rituals or routines? I show

Well, it’s a feeling of connection. If I give him a clue as to what is going on — sit up when it gets tight, close leg and cluck if it’s long I know he has my back. your favorite story with this horse: His name in and of itself
is my favorite story — just in the way his name came up. Nicoletta named him that and he’s taken on that persona. He was incredible right off the start — he led the pack. I had three grand prix horses showing last year and he showed them all how it’s done. He’s The Dude. Bonds That Win | 69

A California native, she competed on the East Coast but settled in the Santa Barbara hills. With a sense of humor and adventure, Kristin is a great storyteller as well as a fierce competitor. She and Bert have won up and down the West Coast, including recent newsworthy victories in Thermal, CA. talent: “I consider one of my best

He belonged to a family that sent him to another trainer, Buddy Brown. Buddy decided not to work with him, but he recognized Bert’s talent. Because of my reputation of being able to deal with quirky horses, he called me, and I was happy to take him on. was it love at first sight or did it take time? It took a little time.
The first day, I decided to lunge him, and
he looked like the bucking horse image on the Wyoming license plate at the end of the lunge line. So I could see he wouldn’t lunge. And in the Driver’s Seat... background: Both of Lauren’s parents
were successful horsemen. Her dad was an Olympic level eventer and her mom had a top hunter/jumper show barn in California for over two decades. So naturally Lauren has been riding since she could walk and started in the show ring on small ponies. Now she is a top level show jumper who competes in the U.S. part of the year, with a base in Wellington, and also competes quite a bit in Europe. Currently ranked in the top 40 in the world, Lauren has medaled in two Pan American Games and is a potential candidate for the 2016 Olympic Team. talent: I try really hard to adapt to the horse I see the qualities in them, appreciate what they do well and meet them in the middle.

breed: Swedish Warmblood age:

height: 15.2h
The Other Half of the Winning Equation... talent: OhLaLa is a fierce competitor –
she really enjoys going in the ring. how did you find each other?
Henk Nooren, whom I’ve done business with in Europe for 20 years, spotted her in Sweden as a 7 year old. We bought her together, and in the middle of her 8-yearold year I bought him out, with owners that are still in place today. was it love at first sight or did it take time? I knew straight
away that she was a super competitive horse. I wouldn’t say that we believed that she was a 5* championship level horse until the middle of her 10 year old year. That year, 2013, I jumped the $1million grand prix in Ocala. It was really big and it didn’t phase her at all, and she’s been at that level ever since.
what is your favorite trait and least favorite trait of this horse? She’s an absolute fighter,
super competitive, and she loves to win. She can be a bit challenging when it comes to doing her dressage flat work. She’d rather skip that part of her life and go straight to jumping. It has taken us a lot of time and patience to get her to understand why she has to do that work. But I can’t tell her what to do — I have to ask her — that is what we’ve learned along the way. If it takes an hour at the walk, then it takes an hour. She’s not very agreeable if you do it any other way. do you have any special rituals or routines? The more
relaxed I stay with her the better she performs. She’s a very intelligent horse and I know she knows when its important. I don’t so much have a routine but I’m sure her groom Zane has one on the day of a Grand Prix. describe how it feels when you are competing together:
Everybody says ‘She’s so small, don’t the jumps look big?’ But I feel really comfortable on her. If I don’t make a mistake we always have a very good chance of being super competitive.
your favorite story with this horse: That is a hard one to answer.
I guess Aachen* in 2014 when I was on the short list for the World Equestrian Games and competed at Aachen at the last minute. She was unbelievable there, we were 5th after three very competitive rounds. That was the day she proved that there’s nothing she can’t do. *in Germany, known as one of the top competitions in the world How has it been to work with Chef D’Equipe Robert Ridland as far as aligning your goals with the country’s goals? lh: I’ve stayed very high in the ranking
in the last 3 or 4 years so he’s always in touch with me about my plans. He’s been very easy to work with. I would say that comunication is key in those situations. How have you enjoyed working with Chef D’Equipe Robert Ridland? lh: In this day and age, you have to have
your coach understand all your players. Robert keeps an open door policy and gives us all the chance to take advantage of it. He knows my intentions. We have much more depth in our country now — it has evolved a lot over the last few years. Bonds That Win | 75

eCe Bloum, lifelong equestrian, trainer, mother, and co-founder of Newmarket Farm in San Diego, had chosen to step down from training horses and riders full time, to be a full-time mom to her three then-teenagers. Fast-forward to 2014, they had grown into young adults, and CeCe was unknowingly ready for a new adventure. Family friend Ron Spogli sparked the idea when he asked what, if anything, she would like to do now. She answered without a moment’s hesitation, an animal rescue. It was a way to turn her love for animals into something that would give back to the community. T h r i v e A n i m a l R e s c u e | 83

“Until one has loved an animal, part of one’s soul remains unawakened.” AN ATO L E FRA N C E
Ron’s wife Georgia had been contemplating the same thing, and immediately a partnership was formed. They recruited dogloving friends from the equestrian world, put together a board of directors, applied for 501c3 status, and the journey began. Today the board of Thrive Animal Rescue is made up of CeCe, Georgia Spogli, Susie Saladino, Marc Grock, and Victoria Hobbs, plus a number of others who are not ‘horse people.’ The group enthusiastically reached out to Danny and Ron’s Rescue of Wellington, Florida, and received help and advice given with matching enthusiasm.
THRIVING
The first step, dubbed by Georgia the “Freedom Ride,” is when dogs leave the shelter and come to roam free in a large, grassy fenced area of Newmarket Farm. Also open to foster families to bring their dogs in the mornings for ‘daycare,’ and 84 | T h r i v e A n i m a l R e s c u e
pick them up in the afternoon. CeCe and her husband Steve dedicated this pastureturned-play-place to Thrive. She explains that three or four days after their Freedom Ride, the dogs’ personalities emerge. Occasionally, there will be one who doesn’t integrate well, but Thrive doesn’t give up. Instead, they’re sent to “Boot Camp” to spend time with a trainer. Much of the success of the program rests with the group of kind, dog-loving friends who, having followed the story on the website, stepped up and volunteered to be foster families. After acclimating on the farm, the dogs are fostered by families until they’re ready for adoption. CeCe spoke with amusement of foster families who just can’t bear to give up their dog, and so adopt it themselves. Known as a “Foster Fail,” it is truly a forever home.
DOG LOVERS STEP UP
a wish list on the web page, where people can list certain criteria (size, weight, age, etc,) for a dog they’d like to have, and Thrive will notify them if they find a dog that fits. In addition, there are usually about six dogs available at Newmarket for adoptive families to choose from.
With the blessing of Blenheim EquiSports, adoption events are routinely held at horse shows in Del Mar and San Juan Capistrano – a brilliant idea, since the people competing at these venues are all animal lovers! Very rarely does a dog have to return to Newmarket without having found a forever home.
As Thrive evolved, a small ‘program within the program’ sprung up, called “Senior Forever Foster.” Senior dogs who have lived their lives with a family, are often sent to shelters not with behavior issues, but potentially with medical challenges. Through the “Senior Forever Foster” program, kindhearted people provide homes, while Thrive covers all medical expenses incurred so that these sweet senior dogs can live in good homes for the remainder of their years.
Board members and volunteers comb the most overcrowded and underfunded shelters to find dogs facing euthanization that would be safe around children, horses, and other dogs, and thus able to join the adoption events.
The success of Thrive is an ongoing surprise and delight to its organizers. Now there’s

FUN- RAISING
At the prestigious Longines Masters of Los Angeles, organizers host a Charity Pro-Am Competition, where professionals and amateurs pair up in elaborate costumes and compete over fences to raise money for their chosen charity. In October of 2014, equestrian Jennifer Gates donned ruby slippers - er, boots, and searched for Oz with Scarecrow Hardin Towell for Thrive. Another burgeoning spin-off of Thrive is the wildly successful Artisans Marketplace that has taken on a life of its own. Now held twice a year, Christmas and summer, at Newmarket, the gathering features San Diego small businesses. Christmas 2015 marked the second annual Holiday Market, with previous vendors returning, and twenty new ones debuting. Truly a family festival, it offers music, food, unique one-of-a-kind things to buy, plus, of course, a warm welcome for all furry members of the family, who can even have their pictures taken with ‘Santa Paws.’
FUTURE TROPHY DOGS
Through Cece’s long-time family friendship with Bill Davidson, owner of Davidson Communities, Thrive Animal Rescue and
Davidson Communities recently formed a partnership. Adoptive events hosted by these unique equestrian communities will offer, as CeCe puts it, “A forever dog for your new forever home.” People willing to bring an adopted dog into their home receive a care package from Davidson Communities, containing a collar and leash, a blanket, bowls, and a supply of dog food and treats. In addition, the Thrive dogs have access to Davidson Communities’ model homes to luxuriate in lush surroundings as they pose for photo shoots. To the ongoing thrill of the Thrive organizers, the equestrian community continues to step up with support and donations. In 2016 Blenheim Equisports is going beyond hosting adoption events. Anyone who wins a class at a Blenheim horse show will receive a token representing a donation that Blenheim will make to charity. The rider can choose from a list of sponsored groups, and Thrive is on the list. Not only have CeCe and her friends created a remarkable organization that has offered new life to scores of dogs, they have created a phenomenon that brings happiness to everyone involved. Bravo!

DEFINING HORSEMANSHIP KAYLA LOTT, EMMA MARLOWE, AND NATASHA TRAURIG by Jackie McFarland and Pam Maley
T
he general consensus is that many young riders today know a great deal about competing, but little about horsemanship. More and more, in our fast-paced world, a student will arrive at the barn to find the horse tacked up and waiting. They will climb on, take their lesson, dismount, give the horse a few pats and maybe a treat, and hand him/her back to a highly-skilled groom. Does horsemanship fall victim to convenience and time constraints? For some, it’s not enough to only experience a lesson or a trip around the show ring. Although there are aspiring equestrians who need to work to earn their way, the truth is they wouldn’t have it any other way. A rider is simply a person who rides a horse, but a horseman knows horses. Left to Right: Kayla Lott, Emma Marlowe and Natasha Traurig.
T r a i n e r s | 97
We spoke with a trio of talented and ambitious young women, all of whom work hard and put in long hours to participate in the sport they love. There are common threads that run through these three stories. These young riders don’t simply arrive at the barn, mount a horse, and leave after the ride. On the contrary, they are often first to arrive and last to leave. Yet each feels incredibly fortunate to be doing what she’s doing, and to have her trainer as a mentor and role model. All are eager to learn, and willing to work long hours, even when faced with unglamorous tasks. And all have the grit to get on a variety of horses, some not well-behaved, and figure out what they need. Kayla Lott, 17, works and trains with Jim Hagman and Katie Gardner at Elvenstar; Emma Marlowe, also 17, works and trains with Leslie Steele at Acres West; and Natasha Traurig, 25, finished with her working student days, is now a young professional who works and trains with Michelle Parker at Cross Creek West. All three have achieved success in and out of the show ring. We spoke with them and with their trainers about horsemanship.
A DAY IN THE LIFE OF DEVELOPING HORSEWOMEN
We asked them what the days are like. Seventeen-year-old Kayla is still in high school. She arrives at school at 7:00am, and takes a ‘zero period’ so that she can leave at 12:30pm. She grabs some lunch, pulls on her riding boots, and is at the barn by 1:30pm. Upon arrival, she finds a list of four to six horses to ride. Kayla knows what each horse needs to work on and works on it. After each ride, she takes time to give each horse the proper care tailored to its individual needs. Once her barn work day is over, she tackles her homework. Emma, also seventeen, handles school a bit differently. She is getting her high school education online in order to maximize her work time with the horses. Arriving at the barn at 8:00am, she often doesn’t leave before 6:00pm, having completed a long to-do list on the ground and in the saddle. She will help set jumps, ride, turn out, tack up or untack, “and anything else that Leslie needs.” She also helps her mom (Debi Marlowe) with the riding school. At the end of her day, she, too, gets busy with her schoolwork.
Kayla Lott
98 | T r a i n e r s
Natasha has finished her working student days, and is now a young professional. But as the daughter of respected equestrians Bernie and Christine Traurig, she always took care of her own horses and managed the stable. This meant long days at the barn - from morning feeding time to night check. “I gathered a great wealth of horsemanship knowledge through working with my parents, and taking personal care of my horses.” While in college, she took as many online courses as possible, becoming fond of the early morning or late evening classes, in order to work around her hours at the barn. Her college social life fell by the wayside, a sacrifice she was willing to make to spend time with the horses. In the winter of 2014 Natasha graduated UCSD with a B.A. in Communication. “I always rode through my academic years,” she tells us, “although I did take a break from my full-time training to experiment and pursue some different jobs, gaining experience in what I like to call the ‘normal’ world.” But she couldn’t
stay away from the saddle for too long, and ended up riding professionally while completing her college education. DAYS AT THE SHOW
On show days, and there are many, the schedule intensifies. Kayla arrives about 6:00am and rides a few horses. Then as the day goes on, she helps with whatever is needed, setting up jumps in the warm-up arena, making office runs, walking and helping riders learn their courses, and checking on ride times in all the show rings. Like Kayla, Emma’s show days start early, often at 5:00am with a few rides, then cleaning tack, organizing trunks, office work - whatever job needs doing. Both agree that horse show days can be long and grueling, but they don’t mind. Having had those miles at the shows in her teenage years, Natasha now has a different role. She stays at home to run the barn, and to teach and train when Michelle’s away competing.

GLOWING AFFIRMATIONS When asked to describe how these young women display the qualities of horsemanship, all three trainers did so eloquently and with admiration. Kayla’s Trainer Jim Hagman, Elvenstar: “I can’t say enough about Kayla. She’s calm, thoughtful, talented, and capable. Quiet with both people and horses, she’s able to get inside the mind and body of a horse, to understand and read them. Whatever horse she gets on, she gives the best she can, and she has the ability to inspire confidence in them. No matter the task, she does it without question or complaint. At the 2015 Maclay Finals, her horse jumped the first jump and then stopped at the Maclay wall. Unruffled, Kayla let him sniff the wall and get a good look at it, then slowly backed up, patted him, and asked him to jump. He did, and finished the course without fault. To me, that says it all. That’s horsemanship. We’re proud that in our program someone like Kayla can rise up. She makes us look good.” Emma’s Trainer Leslie Steele, Acres West: “Emma is a hands-on kind of young woman. Unlike some riders who simply walk up, get on, and get off, she is involved in every aspect. She will groom, wrap, clean – whatever you ask of her. Very passionate, but very realistic, she understands the right thing to do. She is the first one to get up in the morning and take the initiative to do what needs to be done. Many people care only about the riding, but Emma is passionate about it all. She borrows my veterinary books and reads them eagerly. She wants to know how and why, from riding, to training, to veterinary lameness. She is happy to be able to ride, and
100 | D e f i n i n g H o r s e m a n s h i p
willing to get on all sorts of horses, even those that aren’t the easiest to ride. She is developing into a true all-around, excellent horsewoman.” Natasha’s Trainer Michelle Parker, Cross Creek West: “Natasha demonstrates excellent horsemanship. She knows everything involved with proper horse care, due to having parents who know the importance of doing everything from the ground up and with the utmost precision. Fortunately for Natasha they made sure she did all of her own horse care as she was growing up. She always takes her time to make sure that everything she does is aimed at advancing the horse’s flatwork and jumping skills. She tries to do everything just right, and never gets sloppy with her riding or schooling of the horses. I have quite a few young horses so she is getting the opportunity to continue expanding her knowledge and riding skills to a new, less seasoned age group of horses. As well rounded as Natasha’s horsemanship skills are, there is always more to learn, and I know she’s eager to master every skill she can.” As to goals, in the short term, none can imagine giving up the job that they love. “Being a working student for Leslie has been such a privilege and honor,” says Emma. “I have learned so much, and she’s transformed me into the horseman and rider that I am today.” Both Kayla and Natasha would echo that sentiment. All have their eyes on a career with horses. And with their commitment to the work on and off the horse, in the barn and in the saddle, their future as solid horsewomen is bright.

His grandfather shaped much of his childhood, teaching him how to plant, care for, and harvest vegetables, something that instilled a strong work ethic and attention to detail at a young age. His grandfather was also a mason, something young Castro took a liking to. They spent as much time together as they could, and Castro learned how to work with adobe and cantera to build and install fireplaces. Today, Castro has built on his grandfather’s many teachings bringing his customers front and back yards to life. HAT HEAD
E.C. STYLE BAR HAS THE SOLUTION by Pam Maley
“At the end of a busy day, the last thing we wanted to do was to go home and wash/style our hair, especially if there were dinner plans. We also knew that for many of the riders and trainers, there is not enough time to make an appointment at an off-site salon, where you may have to take at least an hour of your time just for travel. We wanted to provide a solution to this problem, with quality and convenient service right at the show grounds! We know that when you look good, you feel good!

Q: A:
My mother, Dona, and I had the inspiration for E.C. Stylebar. I have been a competitive show jumper for fourteen years and we had never seen anything like this. You can get pretty much anything you need at a horse show: food, clothes, massages, chiropractic, but no hair service. Hat-head, that mop of sweaty hair at the end of the day, is just very unflattering, and we wanted to provide a solution to this problem, with quality and convenient service right at the show grounds! We launched the business in August of 2015, and have been delighted with the response. Elwynn and Cass are actually the middle names of my mother and me, respectively. We liked the uniqueness of the names, and it is a nod to family relatives by whom our middle names were inspired. We took the first letters of each, and became E.C. Stylebar On the Go Styling.

of the other vendors at horse shows. It’s classic and we love the look of it. The inside is designed in a minimalistic way with modern touches. There are three styling stations, with plush leather barber chairs, wood grain flooring, dark paneled wood cabinetry, and sleek marble countertops. There is a lounge area at the front for clients to wait for their appointments or just hang out if they so choose.
How did you get started, and what does E.C. stand for?
Why did you choose an Airstream? We decided on the Airstream for our mobile salon, as it is different from any
112 | Hat Head
We wanted the interior to feel very luxurious, so when you step inside you feel like you are in a brick and mortar salon. Overall, we wanted the salon to reflect our personal aesthetic, but also be comfortable.
Q: A:
How has E.C. Stylebar saved the day? The idea is for some of the prominent riders on the circuit to be able to get their hair done after they have ridden, to fix the hat-head. At Thermal this last November, for example, one of the trainers was asked to give an interview before the Grand Prix. She was in a bit of panic, it was 2:00 pm, she had been riding and working with students all day, and had no time to leave and get her hair done. We had provided some services
to a few of her clients throughout the week, so she darted over to the trailer for a quick wash and blow out, and left our salon ready for that interview! We have found that a lot of the riders and trainers, now that they know we are going to be at most of the horse shows, get pretty particular about their hair, and which of our stylists can do it. Our stylists are getting repeat clients and a bit of a cult following, which is great. A certain young Grand Prix rider is very particular about his hair. He was convinced to try our barber and now requests only her. Can’t really complain about that!
Q: A:
BEF O RE
Are there plans on the radar for expansion? Definitely! Plans are already in the works for a second Airstream, perhaps within the next year. E.C.Style Bar is a full service salon, offering color, cut, blowouts, styling, barber services, manicures/pedicures, and makeup application; and we come to you. We will bring the salon to your home or any location of your choice for whatever event you are hosting.
A FT ER
Equestrian Almanac congratulates Katelyn and Dona! We celebrate your success and applaud your ingenuity!
Q: A:
How do I get an appointment? At horse shows the schedules vary per day, per rider, so it’s mostly walk-ins, rather than appointments. But if an appointment works we will schedule it! FO R A P PO I NT ME N T S

Why Equine Bodywork? It’s a fact: horses are flight animals. Showing early signs of pain goes against their survival instinct. By the time a horse outwardly starts showing signs of (muscle) soreness/pain, things have been brewing for much longer. Addressing body soreness through equine bodywork gives the horse an opportunity to use its body correctly which improves performance and boosts confidence. New clients start out with a highly effective ‘ramp it up’ (3 sessions in 2 weeks) program. Once the ‘old, build-up restrictive layers’ have been ‘stripped away’, Smit follows up with regularly scheduled sessions. The bodywork focuses on early detection. By addressing the issues early on, it aims to keep a balanced muscular system in check. Smit’s well rounded equestrian background started at age 12 in Holland where she began riding and showing 116 | P e r f o r m a n c e & W e l l n e s s
in dressage, showjumping and cross country. Later, she also successfully re-trained problem horses, exercised show jumpers and accompanied them at the show circuit in Holland and Belgium. She started her equine bodywork practice in 1999. Regarding her equine bodywork practice Smit states: ‘It is an honor and incredibly rewarding, to work with these dedicated riders/trainers. Whether they compete at a World cup/Grand Prix level, beginner, or anywhere in between.’ Smit is results oriented and devoted to her work. To her there is no better feeling than knowing she has been part of another success story. *Full testimonials & additional info: Equinesse.com putting the art of finesse - in Equine Bodywork

Apart from the choice of the best material, it is the close relationship with the actors of the sport and the fact that all the products are designed and developed by Philippe Dion himself that make any Dy’on product different from the other high quality brands. EXERCISE CARE IN HORSE MATTERS TO AV O I D C O ST LY P R O B L E M S © T. Randolph Catanese, Esq. 2016
I
have been a lawyer working for equine clients for over 3 decades. People often ask me, what does a horse lawyer do? And, at first blush this seems like a reasonable question to ask. My typical response is my explanation that horses and the horse business are like any other specialty field or endeavor. Many times the horses involved are quite expensive or rare and because of these facts, there will be problems when human beings are involved.
Throughout the United States the law is fairly uniform when it comes to disputes between persons involving horses. The typical dispute involves contract principles or tort principles. A typical contract dispute 132 | Horse Matters
may involve breach of warranties, failure to pay on a promissory note, or failure to pay for care and husbandry services. A common tort dispute will usually involve negligence or an intentional wrong such as
fraud. In contract cases, the remedies are usually limited to damages for the breach of the contract. In tort cases, the damages for intentional wrongs usually include actual damages and punitive damages. This occurs if the intentional wrong is within the category of wrongs, which permit an award of punitive damages. Whether the problem is based on a contract or a tort, at the end of the day, it will always involve a relationship between persons or entities. The relationship and the words agreed upon or spoken by the parties will be very signiďŹ cant regarding the rights and obligations of the parties to each other. Whether you are new to the horse business or even if you have a long history in the
horse business, if you want to avoid the unpleasantness of a lawsuit, the best way to avoid a lawsuit is to exercise care before you sign a contract or make representations to another regarding a horse or services you might provide regarding a horse. The more information you have regarding the person on the other side, as well as the subject horse, the better informed you will be and hopefully the information will assist you in making a sound decision regarding the contract or relationship. To conclude, investigate the person and the horse before you proceed. If you have further questions it is usually best to contact an experienced horse lawyer. By doing so, you can hopefully avoid later problems.

Excessive sun is inherent in riding and leads to an increased risk of skin cancer development. Accelerated photo-aging as evidenced by premature wrinkling, brown spots, and blood vessels will also result from this exposure. Annual or biannual skin examinations are especially important for the equestrian to monitor for these changes. More frequent examinations may be
necessary for those with a personal history of skin cancer or the presence of precancerous lesions on the skin. Many riders seek treatment to improve the visible signs of aging exacerbated by years of sun exposure. Dr. Lupton employs a variety of lasers and light sources to improve the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and blotchy skin. Dramatic reductions in sun damage and softening of the skin may be achieved through fractional laser and light-based treatments. Injectables such as dermal filling agents (Juvederm, Restylane) and neurotoxins (Botox, Dysport) may be added to any treatment for further refinement. Optimal clinical results are seen in riders who adopt lifelong daily sun protection measures such as sunscreens, visors and sunglasses after treatment. Minimally invasive laser and light source procedures are best repeated at regular intervals to erase the earliest signs of damage and to maintain youthful results over time.

T
he art of fashion is a delicate balance that very few taken the time to master. To consider oneself an expert takes years of devotion and a massive amount of work and hands on experience, you become so much more than just a fashion designer. Five years ago I took the first step in building my career and staking claim to the title Fashion Expert, mastering many of the elements this industry is made up of. I pride myself in my extensive knowledge of fabric and textiles, the industry is constantly changing and that means you are never done learning and taking the steps to educate yourself. I travel all of the states attending an array of events including: workshops, sourcing shows, conferences and reviews in an effort to grow myself as a designer and as a business owner. I have always had a love for the world of horses, and fashion was something that is second nature to me, I was meant to do this. I have been blessed enough to have be able to combine my two passions, every piece I create has a vast amount of thought and detail, in both the make up and structure of each piece.

Veridatta
eet Rebecca Underdown, Chemist, Acupuncturist, and Equestrian. A Hamptons native, Rebecca developed Veridatta’s skin care line with one intent: efficacy. Frustrated with the over-saturared skin care market filled with mediocre products, Rebecca created Veridatta to be results driven Seven years later, Veridatta is the premier anti-aging skin care line designed for equestrians facing the raw elements day in and day out. The sun is the leading cause of pre-mature aging. Veridatta treats anti-aging by looking at the amount of time it takes for a cell to perform under the amount of stress it is under. When it comes to skin care, an “anti-aging” product should not be creating more stress for the body. “During our product’s development, I was concerned with the amount of time it
142 | T r a i n e r s
takes for a cell to integrate or dispose of the ingredient through the lymph system. If you take that amount of time, then multiply that by millions of cells, it is easy to understand why ingredients really do matter. I want my cells to work as efficiently as possible and I don’t want to feel bad about being in the sun riding everyday,” say Underdown. Dermatologist approcved, Veridatta’s morning and night routine increases circulation through the layers of the skin, allowing new, healthy cells to ascent to the surface of the skin. “Veridatta is what beauty feels like. Neither shy nor boastful, it’s a feeling of truth ever person deserves,” adds Underdown. aneta Harmon is a renowned, San Diego County entrepreneur whose women’s fashion label, Mia Brazilia, is nationally recognized in the activewear and couture industry for its innovative vision and unique designs. While training as a champion martial artist in 2003, Kaneta became acutely aware of the lack of sexy, stylish women’s sportswear available to active women like herself. equestrian movements makes it perfectly suited for the high demands of the horseman. Whether a rider is training in winter or summer, Mia Brazilia clothing is all weather-proof with the ability to wick away moisture and protect from any inclement, weather condition. Kaneta’s distinguishing array of patterns and colors will surely provoke conversation for the discerning equestrian who aspires to depart from the tired, antiseptic alternatives heretofore available. In addition to her role as a fashion designer, Kaneta Harmon has also designed and developed a popular, “at-home” training regimen over the last decade that incorporates her passion for martial arts, kickboxing, and traditional fitness training. Mrs. Harmon travels countywide to local, corporate headquarters as well as to private residences to offer her challenging, adaptive training sessions to individuals/companies that want a well-rounded, “holistic” approach to individual/ employee health. As a trainer, health advisor, and lifestyle coach, Kaneta Harmon firmly believes in the importance of an ongoing dialogue between the body, heart, and the mind and its salutary effect on elevating the human condition. The Mia Brazilia collection evokes this spirit in its celebration of the modern woman who aspires to venture “beyond the ordinary.” As Mrs. Harmon is fond to say, “Life is short, go out and live it… to the beat of your own drum!”

SKIN CARE FOR THE EQU E S TR I AN ATHL E TE
s equestrian athletes we are constantly training outdoors exposing ourselves to the harsh UV rays. The sad truth is you don’t see the damage until it’s almost too late to reverse. Here are some important steps you can take now and still enjoy the love of this wonderful sport while aging gracefully. Do not leave for the barn without using a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least an SPF 30. It’s also a really good idea to wear a hat that blocks out all sun without restricting your vision of course. I know, you may be thinking of Little Bo Peep on horseback but I promise your skin will thank you someday. Riders are high performance athletes and as we work hard out in the sun we tend to sweat which can lead to clogged pores. It’s a really good idea to have regularly scheduled
146 | T r a i n e r s
monthly maintenance treatments to combat the exposure we get from the sun as well as keep your skin clear and free of breakouts. In the beautiful Little Italy area of San Diego I offer the Dermasound Plus Ultrasonic Treatment. It is a three-step process that uses ultrasonic frequency to gently loosen and remove dead skin cells from the skins surface and stimulates the production of collagen. Collagen is the main support and healing connective tissue in our skin, and diminishes as we age. It is excellent for all skin types. It reduces discoloration from the sun as well as decongests the pores which is especially helpful for us riders. The Dermasound penetrates product into the skin 10,000 times more effectively than if applied by hand! I’d love to help you have the best skin of your life! Changing the face of the equestrian community, one rider at a time.

E.C. Stylebar got started as a mother, a daughter, and an idea. Being equestrians, the idea came to Elwynn & Cass after a long day at the horse show. They found themselves wishing there was a way to feel refreshed afterwards. Seeing that there was no salon service existing at horse shows, the idea of a mobile salon was born. E.C. Stylebar, the on-the-go style bar grew out of the simple idea of providing quality and refreshing service to men and women, without the hassle of traveling to and waiting at a salon.

BARCELONA FARMS
WORLD-CLASS IN DEL MAR by Pam Maley
L
ocated on nearly twenty acres in the middle of scenic Del Mar horse country, Barcelona Farms was founded in 2015 by Carlos and Gabriela Fernandez, to share their passion for Hanoverian horses with others who appreciate these versatile, noble, and athletic warmbloods. Carlos, a fourth generation horseman, has over thirty years experience in breeding, raising, and managing horses. Gabriela’s fascination with horses began at age nine and continued through years of dressage competitions and show events. While Carlos and Gabriela’s equestrian heritage extends across many breeds, the Hanoverian capacity for elite performance in show jumping and dressage fueled their love for these consummate equine athletes. Barcelona Farms
ea: Why did you choose Del Mar for your newest farm and breeding operation? carlos fernandez: We think that Southern California, specifically the Del Mar area, is one of the most important horse capitals of the world. Steeped in tradition, it has a rich history of equestrian events that has helped develop world champions in many disciplines; like what Vessel’s accomplished in the Quarter Horse industry. The incredible weather, the Pacific Ocean, beautiful resorts, the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club, world-class horses, and internationally renowned riders — all are simply phenomenal. ea: Why did you choose to breed Hanoverians at Barcelona Farms? cf: My wife rides and competes in dressage, and I love the jumpers as a result of my riding days at Culver Military Academy.
Hanoverians excel in Olympic disciplines and are kind, well-tempered horses. Barcelona Farms is dedicated to breeding, developing, competing, and selling impeccably bred Hanoverians that will be available to the American market without the need to travel abroad.
ea: How are you choosing your breeding stock? cf: After four generations in the international horse industry, we are fortunate to know many people worldwide, and we are striving to collect the finest of broodmares. Our band consists only of state premium mares that have nice conformation and really pleasant temperaments. They are descendants of top sires, such as De Niro (2008 Stallion of the Year), Contendro 1, Cornet de Obolensky, Clinton, Diarado, Diamant de Semilly and Grey Top.
Barcelona Farms | 177
178 | T r a i n e r s
(Broodmare Band): Cornelia, CoCo Chanel and Crystal. (Stallion) Cienfuegos. (Fillies): Diana GSF and Denira SGF
Once our best mares are matched with the proper sires of strong lineage, the embryo is transferred to our hand-selected surrogate by embryo transplant, to be carried to term. Our fillies have consistently been Top Foals in the registration inspections, as well as Free Jumping Champions: Coco Chanel (Free Jumping Champion and Horse of the year in Canada), Cornelia (Free Jumping Champion in Canada), for example.
ea: Are you planning to stand a stallion? cf: Originally, the plan was to continue to purchase semen from the top stallions in the world to breed to my mares, but happily, we found a stallion prospect with incredible movement and a great jump named Cienfuegos. He is a Contendro/ Glückspilz son and a full brother to Codex One, Christian Ahlmann’s Olympic horse. We decided to purchase and import him in late 2015. ea: Can you tell us more about Cienfuegos and his breeding? cf: Cienfuegos is a very special young stallion. Born in December 2011, his sire, Contendro 1, is a leading sire in the disciplines of jumping and dressage. Cienfuegos’ dam Gypsy, is a state premium broodmare and is also the dam of Codex 1, who is quite possibly one of the best show jumpers in the world at this time. As the top horse of German rider Christian Ahlmann, who is currently ranked #9 in the world, Codex One was a strong competitor at the London Olympics, and is a leading contender for Rio. His three-quarter brother, Contendros, is a successful sire of the well-known German breeder Paul Schockemohle. Cienfuegos was a great opportunity for us, as he fit perfectly into our breeding plans. We were fortunate to form a relationship with Hall of Fame legend, Hap Hansen,
who will develop him to his fullest potential as a Grand Prix Jumper so that he can go on to become a successful sire.
ea: Tell us a little about how Barcelona Farms operates. cf: From selecting and investing in the finest farm we could find in Del Mar, to researching and selecting our breeding stock from around the world, to investing in the best quality footing in our dressage and jumping arenas, to engaging world famous trainers, we have set the bar high. Only the best veterinarians, farriers, grooms, feed, supplements, and bedding will meet the standards of Barcelona Farms. It will be a first-class operation in all aspects - no exceptions! ea: What are your current and future plans? cf: We were so pleased to be able to have almost 20-acres for all of our operations. Immediately after closing on the farm, we began designing the new facility, while also preparing horses for the Desert Circuit in Thermal, CA. Within the next few months, our arenas, walker, and Grand Prix Field should be complete, as we continue to develop our horses and build our staff. Once we are satisfied that everything is running perfectly, we will hold exclusive clinics for jumper and dressage riders from the U.S. and Europe, and look to develop an Invitational Grand Prix for the top horses and riders in Southern California, similar to Live Oak in Ocala or the Wellington Masters. ea: When do you anticipate having horses available for sale? cf: Every horse has a story, and every horse has a price. contact: Carlos Fernandez, 832.331.5582 Barcelona Farms | 179
A BIT OF INFORMATION ABOUT THE HANOVERIAN BREED…
T
he Hanoverian Society began in Germany in 1735, and the Registry, or Studbook, goes back to 1888. In 1978, Americans began importing Hanoverians, and to maintain the German standard of selectivity, the American Hanoverian Society was incorporated. To be entered into the Foal Registry, a foal must pass rigorous pedigree standards, and an onsite Registration Inspection by representatives of the Hanoverian Society. One filly and one colt per year are named Top Filly/Colt, and that designation is written into the foal’s permanent registration papers. Mare inspections take place at age three or older. Those who receive a high score on the rigorous Mare Performance Test become Elite Mare Candidates. If they produce a Hanoverian Society registered
180 | Barcelona Farms
foal within three years, they become Elite Mares. In Germany, these are called State Premium Mares. A mare’s gestation period is eleven months. For that reason, many breeders choose to employ Embryo Transplant. Once the prize mare is matched with a top stallion, she is impregnated with the semen. When the embryo is formed (in about a week), the veterinarian transfers it to a Surrogate Mare, who will carry the foal to term and deliver it. Thus, the valuable mare is able to produce many more foals than otherwise possible, and she can quickly return to competition. Free Jumping Competitions, in which the horses jump without riders and tack, are open to Hanoverians at ages three and four. These are optional, but a good performance definitely adds to the value of the horse.

I first studied Cavallo 3 years ago to live, ride and work at a beautiful farm. The location ideal, newly constructed barns beautiful and it’s potential limitless. I didn’t love the power lines but EMF ratings proved quite safe. The infrastructure, engineering, well production and attention to every detail including water management made it easy to recommend this farm.

Lago Lindo is my favorite street in Rancho Santa Fe and this Farm and Estate has it all with a Lake View. Timeless architecture, easy care barn, nice arena. Grounds in perfect condition, homes are move-in ready or prime for a fun cosmetic renovation. One of only 9 horse properties on the lake. Rarely on the market.

Kirkwood gets my personal Seal of Approval after learning to ski, race, teach others and my children to ski here. Summer hiking, swimming, horseback riding and fishing making the old fashioned way. There is not a better place in the Sierra’s; close to Lake Tahoe yet just far enough to be out of the crowds and truly escape. Kirkwood is my mountain Hometown. Only 2 hours past Mammoth and a 1.5 hour flight to Reno/Lake Tahoe from San Diego.
