Education is changing and evolving at a rapid pace, with educators being driven to adapt traditional design and delivery methods to meet the demands of modern students who are accustomed to digital interactivity.

Learners are changing How can the traditional modes of classroom instruction engage and inspire students when life outside the classroom has changed so dramatically? On average, teens in the UK spend 40 percent* of their media time on mobile phones, the Internet, and games. For many learners, class is the only time in their day when they completely ‘disconnect.’ This generation of students may not buy a newspaper or even use a land line. They already have a wealth of online network experience using social sites, browsing for information and choose to follow unknown peers for guidance. They are used to moving with technology and take advantage of the latest capabilities they have access too.

Employers need new skills Employers are also changing and confronting the realities of globalisation. Employers will be looking for the most competent, creative and innovative people. As many as 70 percent* of new jobs created are ‘interaction intensive’ occupations such as insurance, banking, and healthcare, which rely on interactions between people and involve judgment, insight, and collaboration. Employers will also expect IT skills so users are adept with using technology to function and engage with peers and customers.

Key challenges in ICT Every school, college and university has its own specific requirements. Simply through the unique layout of rooms, teaching areas and also then the requirements for learning off-site and at home. The key challenges are how you manage your ICT to enable and enhance learning. Is your network able to cope? Do you have enough access? And are you secure? Does every teacher, in every subject have the appropriate technology to deliver the lesson and enhance the pupils learning?

How will it improve learning? Equanet works directly with Network Managers, Teachers and ICT staff to scope and provide solutions for education. Most ask the same question. How can we embrace the latest technology to enhance the learning experience for our students? At Equanet we understand that different academic institutions have different needs. Our team of consultants can help you get the best out of technology - ensuring both staff and students all reap the benefits to improve learning outcomes. The benefit of working with Equanet is that we are able to offer a completely unique and tailored solution. So whether it is an improved network function or a security issue, enabling wireless access, mobile device management or a fitting out a new ICT suite we can help.

The digital learning environment No two education institutions are the same, no two sets of challenges are the same, therefore no two solutions we provide are the same. Equanet understands the changing environment and works with schools to understand the challenges of ICT today. We can offer support across your entire estate both in and out of school.

General Classroom General Classrooms are those where specialist equipment is not required to teach the curriculum. Technology is used to extend all areas of learning, as well as interactive whole class teaching. Technology is now expected within general classrooms, with most benefiting from projectors and interactive whiteboards, with visualisers, voting systems and laptops extending the range of student activities.

External Spaces External learning incorporates the use of ICT in any outside environment, whether to extend opportunities within the curriculum or provide more areas for informal learning. These spaces have become far more widely used over the past few years, with outside classrooms, amphitheatres and more formal landscaping being used to engage wider groups of students. Much of this informal learning can be enhanced by the use of ICT, whether this is the introduction of mobile devices, providing wireless access to the network and internet or using multi-media recording devices to capture practical learning experiences.

Home & Community Using technology out of the classroom is becoming more and more common - particularly at home, or within the wider community. It’s important to understand how you may wish to maximise this opportunity, whilst ensuring everyone in your school and your own data is safe. Mobile technology is growing at an

exponential rate - for many it is the most flexible and adaptable type of technology. In the wider community it is far more common than the traditional technologies employed in the classroom. To embrace this technology it’s important to understand how you may wish to use it, and maximise it’s potential whilst not investing in technology that may become under-used. Similarly, it is important to understand how you can ensure that all your users and your data remains safe and secure:

Public & Social Spaces Public and social spaces include areas such as the Library or Learning Resource Centre, Dining areas and Halls, as well as other community rooms and circulation space. These social areas within school buildings can be places where students work or socialise together, as well as areas that are used by the local community or possibly to the wider public through lettings.

School Office The School Reception and School Office is a key element for the smooth day-to-day running of any school. Choosing the right technologies can help to increase efficiency and effectiveness, and can ensure that everyone in the school community can make best use of the facilities available.

Special Educational Needs Students with additional learning needs can benefit hugely from personal access to technology, both in their classrooms and for any 1:1 or small group work that they undertake. ICT

can have a huge impact on the levels of engagement, self esteem and progress of students with additional learning needs. The choices of technology will depend on the range of learning needs you support and the main ways in which you provide support.

Sports & Performance ICT is being increasingly used to provide instant feedback and analysis in sports, and audio visual support for dance and drama raise schools to professional standards of provision. Sports and performance areas include internal PE spaces, dance and drama. Schools may have their own dance studios, but these may need to be used for more general PE. For these physical skills, the ability for students to record and playback their movements will help with self and peer assessment and enable them to identify where they need to improve. This can also be used effectively in drama, which will benefit from additional audio-visual support to develop wider performance skills.

Whole School Considering the Whole School environment is important when planning your technology solutions. The Whole School environment is an important part of any ICT solution, and includes centralised and shared facilities (such as the server room or infrastructure) as well as public spaces, corridors, individual work spaces, and other areas where staff and pupils may use ICT on a more ad-hoc basis.

Learning Styles Collaboration involves students working together to complete a set task or challenge in the context of a single subject or cross-curricular project. Technology can often be seen as a means of sharing information or to support independent study. However, it can also be a very powerful collaborative tool. The choice of technology will depend on what type of collaboration and learning activity you are planning for, and the need for enough flexibility to suit a wide range of working styles.

Independent learning involves individual students working with technology as part of their ICT curriculum or using technology to support their learning in other subjects. Much work that is currently done in schools supports students with their independent learning. However, there are now much wider technology choices depending on the amount of time students will spend doing these sorts of activities, and the type of activities they will undertake.

Creativity develops the use of mobile and audio-visual technology to extend and enhance learning opportunities for students. Technology is now providing schools with a much wider range of creative tools to help engage wider groups of students and develop key skills that can be used in the workplace.

Interactivity enables students to become more engaged with activities that require their input, with many different technical solutions available to enable this way of working. ICT can support a wide variety of interactive styles in the classroom, depending on the focus and number of people who you would like to interact at any given moment.

Networking: HP | 9

Today’s school networking requirements are more complex than ever. Tech-savvy users demand the fastest and latest technologies, while new attacks continue to threaten networks. School departments must balance these needs with decreasing budgets. HP networking products help schools achieve these goals with an extensive portfolio of interoperable, standards-based solutions that deliver state-of-the-art collaboration and secure information sharing. Our robust, reliable and scalable solutions provide unmatched value, lower total cost of ownership and reduce administrative burdens to enable staff to focus on strategic initiatives.

Robust, reliable and secure network solutions from HP

Get educated on HP’s ‘Business of Education’ Today a key measurement of success for a primary/secondary schools is based on test results, graduation rates and college bound students ratios. To achieve acceptable marks in these areas schools must become proficient in what HP calls the ‘Business of Education’. We have found that many primary/secondary schools are still running on a combination of legacy and new applications that are hosted on disparate proprietary networks which often cause: interoperability, visibility and security challenges. Network chaos like this makes it challenging to support contemporary learning environments such as media-rich interactive courses, distance learning, one-to-one computing, as well as essential services such as administrative services and emergency notification systems. The HP Business of Education is a cost conscience strategy that enables an institution to balance the need to offer a mobile, 24x7x365 accessible network that supports real-time, collaborative learning and back office

applications, while providing the 21st century tools their student need to adapt, function and excel in the next step of their life’s journey. Below are three steps of the strategy that HP has assisted institutions in accomplishing: ›› Increase quality time teachers spend with each student. ›› Maximise limited teaching resources through distance learning. ›› Reduce cost while increasing technology access ›› A high-performance network is critical to enabling media-rich collaboration, real-time assessments that can help in developing individualised lesson plans.

Case study Wireless integration and a complete hardware refresh for a forward thinking school in Birmingham.

Matthew Boulton Community Primary School The requirement The need to completely refresh its hardware enabled Matthew Boulton community primary school in Birmingham to re-think how technology could be used to seamlessly integrate into its pupils’ learning.

The solution One of Equanet’s solutions architects visited the school several times to discuss in depth the school’s future requirements and its vision for learning, so that the technical solution finally proposed met both current and future needs. iPads, PCs, notebooks, projectors and digital cameras installed in every classroom with robust, reliable connectivity through a wireless network.

Seamless integration of ICT with learning For Matthew Boulton Community Primary School in Birmingham the opportunity to completely refresh its ICT brought a new vision in how technology can be seamlessly integrated into pupils’ learning. Denise Gardner, Matthew Boulton’s ICT Co-ordinator, could have simply replaced their outdated ICT but with PCs, mobile devices, digital media and the internet already part of pupils’ lives she wanted to ensure the teaching staff at Matthew Boulton was enabled to teach with the tools and media its pupils were already using. “It was my role to create a vision for how our school could better use ICT in the everyday lives of our pupils. I could have simply replaced our existing kit but I was keen to explore how ICT could enable Anytime, Anywhere Learning”.

Choosing Equanet as the partner to deliver In 2011 Denise approached Equanet at a local Link2ICT event at which Equanet was showcasing the new Think System solution. As one of the largest Apple Authorised Resellers in the UK Equanet has a proven track record of bringing cost-effective Apple solutions to educational establishments. The technical experts on hand were able to answer all Denise’s technical questions and paint a picture for how this solution could work for school. “One of

Equanet’s solutions architects visited us several times and together we built a cohesive mobile learning solution”. This was done through in depth discussions about the school’s future requirements and its vision for learning, ensuring the technical solution finally proposed met both current and future needs. Following an on-site assessment and consultation by one of Equanet’s solutions architects, every classroom now has a projector, new PCs and iPads, notebooks and digital cameras, all installed in a completely new wireless network solution. This has ensured that technology has become an integral part of the learning environment. For Denise and the rest of the teaching staff this is key: “We used to plan one or two hour lessons a week in the ICT suite. It meant the staff often had to almost falsely create a lesson just to fit the ICT in. Now the ICT is seamless and supported and it enhances learning, rather than being an afterthought”.

Using ICT to develop creativity Denise wanted the school’s pupils to become truly ICT literate, having used all types of technology during their time at the school. “Kids are unafraid of technology and they use it from an early age. That’s why we now have touchscreens in our nursery”. As the new technology is integrated into every classroom throughout the school it is enabling an innovative approach in lessons, such as using the Talking Birds application on the iPads to encourage speaking and listening techniques. Matthew Boulton is one of sixteen schools in the UK linked to the “Think It, Film It, Cook It, Learn It” project, aimed at improving key skills through a more creative curriculum. Denise explains one of the benefits: “Some of our pupils have started to develop their own comic books using ICT. This is a good task for engaging boys in particular in creative writing and filming”. The pupils are also using their digital cameras and laptops to report on and film local events, and produce drama. It also helps pupils, (and boys in particular), to develop reading skills. As Denise explains: “It’s

much more engaging for our children to go into the book corner with an iPad. Not only do they come with free classic books but we can buy more books online which don’t get destroyed and need to be replaced”. Another benefit of web supported learning is space. The iPad takes up significantly less space on a desk than a traditional notebook. Using mobile technology eases the pressure on schools to build more classrooms and specialised learning areas, freeing up storage space. The wireless networking enables staff, and pupils to move around the classrooms free of cables, creating a cleaner and more harmonious learning environment. An effective wireless network in schools and colleges is a key enabling technology that can provide pupils with the opportunity to embrace “everywhere learning” with robust, reliable connectivity.

“Equanet had the answers to all our questions and the solutions to our problems”. Denise Gardner, ICT Co-ordinator, Matthew Boulton School

Training the teaching staff The teaching staff at Matthew Boulton required training and a one day course with an Apple Professional Development Trainer was organised by Equanet. This has given the staff the confidence to fully integrate technology into their learning environments. Overall Denise and the rest of the staff at Matthew Boulton are very happy with the ICT solution they now have in place. “Equanet had the answers to all our questions and the solutions to our problems. The wireless network solution has enabled both staff and pupils to truly embrace Anytime, Anywhere learning, and the collaborative approach between Equanet and ourselves means we have confidence that the solution can be developed over time to meet our future requirements”.

Technology to maximise potential Recent years have seen a significant investment in technology in schools, colleges and universities and there is a growing body of evidence that this investment has had a positive impact on learning, achievement and attainment. There is also strong evidence that technology can contribute to improved efficiencies across the system in time and money and that this can then be reinvested in an improved quality of education. Young people expect learning to be personalised, relevant and consistent with their own personal uses of digital technologies and this means that education providers need to have a long term strategy, high levels of workforce skills, and a robust and sustainable infrastructure to ensure innovation and the creative use of new and emerging technologies. For technology to truly deliver on its promise

within the education sector, power, performance and innovation are not enough. It must be extremely cost-effective and be able to deliver the ultra-high levels of reliability and value for money that is increasingly demanded by the current economic climate. This is why Toshiba products are so widely used in the education sector. Toshiba have developed strong and effective partnerships with schools, colleges, universities, teachers and learners through the “Toshiba Ambassadors” programme. This enables Toshiba to identify the future needs of learners and teachers and ensure our technologies are effective and value for money. Educational research confirms that our technologies make a difference to the engagement, motivation, attendance, achievement progression and attainment of learners.

Today, it goes without saying that technology has a critical role to play in education. Across all levels, it helps to make the learning process faster and more effective. It extends to the organisational sphere, helping administrators run schools, departments and colleges smoothly and efficiently.

Essential School Accessories You can’t have too much of a good thing. And when those good things are genuine Lenovo accessories, then having a cupboard full of them makes total sense. It’s a fact that most schools and further education institutes are having to constantly replace things such as mice and keyboards. That’s not because the products aren’t up to the task, it’s just that the users don’t take care of them. There are only so many times a mouse can be

dropped of have liquid spilled over it before it gives up the ghost. Screens also come in for abuse, with sticky fingers, pens, pencils and even rulers being poked at them from all angles. That’s why it’s important to have a new kit standing by. With Lenovo accessories you get kit that is as durable as it can be, but also cost effective. Perfect for those occasions when even Lenovo’s build quality get’s out done by a 12 year olds destructive urge.

Why not attend an Event with Equanet? Over 20 Teachers, Network Managers and Head Teachers took the opportunity to attend the event, exploring ideas with experts from Equanet, Apple and other key partners. A key discussion point or theme during the day was how iPad is transforming teaching and learning in educational environments today. Amongst the topics discussed were iPad educational apps and mobile security, along with mobile device management which is top of the agenda for many organisations today. These were brought to life through discussion and breakout sessions. Other topics included managing the growing area of Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) and software licensing compliance.

Education Events | 25

Equanet hosted its second iPad in Education event on 24 April at The Lowry in Salford Quays, Manchester.

We received some really positive feedback from the delegates, which included: ›› Great one to one conversations within the breakout sessions ›› Interesting discussions and views on device management ›› 56% of delegates had an improved perception of Equanet as a solutions provider ›› Great to see a vendor neutral approach in what you do If you would like to know more about Equanet’s Apple solutions or find out more about how to securely and efficiently integrate this revolutionary technology, call your Account Manager.

The next iPad in Education Event will be the last week of September in the South. If you’d like to attend email the events team at events@equanet.co.uk for further detail. BETT Show 2012 We exhibited again at BETT 2012, the leading educational ICT event in the UK, and what a fantastic exhibition it was! This year’s show was one of the biggest to date, with over 600 exhibitors and 30,372 visitors across the 4 days. The Equanet stand allowed us to demonstrate our expertise in the education market. We were able to talk to hundreds of visitors about maximising their technology investment as well as running many demonstrations including Mobile Device Management, desktop virtualisation and SAN storage. Visit www.equanet.co.uk/events for updates on our forthcoming events.

Case Study: Great Barr School Challenge

Benefits:

Great Barr School, a co-educational secondary school in Birmingham was seeking a variety of technology equipment that delivered high quality, a broad range of products and excellent value. It was also important for the school to build a relationship with one key manufacturer to ensure consistency across equipment.

Having developed a relationship with Samsung, Great Barr School has achieved consistency in equipment and is constantly kept up to date on new products so that they can better shape their decisions and plan for the School’s future accordingly.

The Solution Great Barr School employed a Devices Manager to trial products from a range of manufacturers. Following extensive testing, Samsung’s offering across various product categories stood out among the competition for its value, robustness and wide range.

Result Great Barr School has noticed an improvement in the quality of coursework since implementing Samsung products. Feedback from staff enjoying the flexibility to use products that suit their needs and teaching style. As a result, the School is looking to further expand its range of Samsung products.

“Samsung’s range of products was a key deciding factor. The variety in notebooks and netbooks enable us to provide staff with a personalised choice to suit their needs - some staff require higher spec notebooks, whereas others prefer the more portable style models which are ideal for use in the school, at home and for travel between classes,” Daniel Locke-Wheaton, Assistant Head Teacher Great Barr School.

All-In-Ones that are in a class of their own. To address the challenges facing schools today, Lenovo All-in-One (AIO) PCs based on the 2nd Gen Intel® Core™ processor family deliver the requisite technology to meet classroom performance expectations and the ROI that allays budget concerns. Lenovo All-in-One PCs like the ThinkCentre M90z are powered by the Intel Q57 Express Chipset. This gives them the performance needed to run today’s commonly used higher education classroom, research, and administrative and media-intensive applications. The Intel processors also enable students, faculty, research staff, and

administrators to open multiple windows at once, providing a significantly smoother experience than that created by the aging PC fleet they already use. In education, many PCs are shared. Frequently, a classroom PC might be used by a science class one period, an English class the next, and a history class after that. Each discipline has its own set of applications and each of those applications has different performance, connectivity, and graphics requirements. Lenovo All-in-One PCs provide the processing power to run the wide range of classroom

applications. The systems’ graphics capabilities support the high resolution output needed today for a variety of disciplines. And Lenovo All-in-One PCs offer integrated communications technology— speakers, Webcam, and microphone—that empower the growing need for collaboration in higher education.

“I want the best end to end technology options for my education institute”

“I want reliable quality solutions for my students”

Our education portal is designed to meet the requirements of every audience, and we know that IT professionals working in schools know what they need. The portal also allows you to get to what you need using a more traditional navigation. The products and services listed feature full specifications, images and supporting documentation to enable you to make informed decisions about the right technology for you.

Running an educational establishment is now more akin to running a business than a place of learning. The diverse range of tasks means that your focus should be on strategy and not the day-to-day. Teachers and classroom assistants are faced with a bewildering choice of IT solutions, with more and more options available every month. Many teachers tell us that they know what they want to achieve but not what they need to achieve it. Without the support of specialist IT staff they are often compelled to buy the latest product rather than the most appropriate.

iPad in Education

Benjamin Stanley is one of Apple’s Distinguished Educators. His knowledge, expertise and enthusiasm have to help shape the way teachers and students get the most from iPad. We asked Ben to put together some lesson plans to showcase what iPad can do. Here is just one, but there will be many more coming soon on the Equanet Education Portal.

Educating with iPad

Safari - for browsing the web

the web, a fantastic tool for research. To copy an image from the Internet simply hold your finger down on the image you want until a couple of choices appear; Save Image or Copy. By tapping Save Image the photo will be saved to your Camera Roll. Do the same with text press and hold then adjust the selected area and choose Copy. Open the Notes app and press for a moment to bring up a menu and choose Paste.

Going Global

The iPad is designed to be an intuitive and easily understood device. Everything about it says pick me up and have a go. Here we look at how to get started and some tips that will let you get the most out of the iPad in the classroom. Straight out of the box the iPad is preload with a few key apps for use in the classroom…

Notes - a notebook with unlimited pages Camera and Photo Booth - access the front or rear camera to take still images or video Photos - this is where any images or video shot with the iPad will be stored, sometimes called the Camera Roll.

Using Safari Safari is the iPads Internet browser and this will let you copy and paste any text or images from

Maps let’s you travel to any where in the world, you can enter a postcode or just a place name and be taken to its location. Pull the bottom right corner of the screen to change the display from a map to satellite or terrain views. The iPad is using GoogleMaps for this information, so we also have access to street view. Just press and hold on a road on the screen to drop a pin then press the red street view icon. The display will zoom in to the street and you can look around! You might want to take a picture of where you are. To grab

All of the images and video you capture with the built in cameras and screen shots you might take are stored in the camera roll which you access through the Photos app. Pinch or squeeze pictures to zoom in and out and use the share button to Email, Print or Copy the picture. There are no editing tools built in to the Photos app, but apps like iPhoto (£2.99) or PS Express (free) will let you do basic image editing like cropping, adjusting contrast and some image effects.

Working quickly between apps Double tapping the iPad home button brings up a row of icons, these are your recently used apps. To switch to one just touch the icon. This is an excellent way for quickly moving between apps without the hassle of navigating back to the home screen or folders. So if students want to re visit the Explain Everything app to update information gained so far, then its only a double tap of the home button away You can also swipe to the right to access media playback controls, change screen brightness and stop the screen from rotating with the iPad, which can be useful when passing it around the classroom. We hope these few tips will get you started with the iPad. Remember the key to learning anything is to explore and play. If you get stuck at any time just press the home button to return home. If the iPad stops working then press and hold the power button and swipe to turn it off, wait a few moments and turn it back on and all should be returned to normal.

iPad in Education

iPad in English

There’s certainly a lot of excitement in education around the iPad at the moment, but just how can it look to impact on teaching and learning in subject areas such as English? In this iPad curriculum walk through I’ll be covering project research, creating characters, storyboarding and video production around the topic of Myths and Legends.

1

Project Research in Safari

2

Project Research in iBooks

The Safari app isn’t simply a web browser. Its a great tool when students want to research their topic areas. One very cool feature is the ability to save images directly from websites or Google by simply touching and holding. Choosing ‘Save Image’ saves straight to the Camera Roll and can be accessed from another app. This is extremely useful when students are project planning or storyboarding.

The iBooks app is our virtual bookcase allowing for the population of ebooks that have been purchased, or created. Entering a search for Myths and Legends brings up a number of book titles for download. Some of these titles are free and some ask for payment. Once downloaded students are able to work with aspects of the book such as text. By simply pressing and holding on a single text word, students are able to choose from the following - Speak, Copy, Define, Highlight, add note and search. In this instant we have highlighted a paragraph of text and have chosen to copy it. We certainly don’t want our students to simply copy text from other resources but this can be extremely useful for project planning and working out our idea.

3

Visual Reports in Pages

Using Pages, Students can create stunning visual documents using images saved from other apps. In this instance we have used the image saved from Safari and the text copied from iBooks. Pages even allows for the insertion of video creating extremely content rich student projects. Once finished work can be e-mailed, printed out wirelessly or saved to a physical server using the WebDAV protocol.

4

Animating characters with Morfobooth

5

Storyboarding with Puppet Pals

New Technology should be all about pushing teaching boundaries and the iPad with its sixty thousand education apps certainly allows teachers to do just that. The Morfobooth app brings characters to life by animating faces saved from resources such as Google. Students simply import front facing images before lining up features such as eyes, nose and mouth. Once created students can lip sync project facts by simply pressing the Record button. Imagine how students can have Medusa herself talking about her hair made of writhing snakes and how her gaze turned mortals into stone. Simply a fantastic app for those students who struggle with confidence when presenting back to classmates.

The Puppet Pals app is fantastic for creating live storyboard animations. There is nothing wrong with students reading about Greek Mythology and then writing a report about their findings, but creating a live animation with their own characters takes the topic to another level. Add real life characters and backgrounds using the iPads built in cameras or save images directly from resources such as Google images. Once students have cut out and chosen their characters and backgrounds, they simply press the record button and animate away. Once recorded, finished movie animations can be saved directly to the Camera Roll.

6

Finishing our project with iMovie

iMovie is an Apple app like ‘Pages’ and derives from its big brother application that ships free with iLife, installed on every single Apple desktop or laptop computer. iMovie allows students to create high quality media projects extremely quickly. On opening up the iMovie app students are automatically able access any content saved in the Camera Roll or iTunes via the media browser. The media browser is a window through to all of our video, image and music saved on our iPad. That means content created in apps such as Morfobooth and Puppet Pals and saved to the Camera Roll can be seen in iMovie. Students can instantly add content to iMovies timeline before adding templates, text, transitions and background music. When finished, projects can be saved back to the photos app or by plugging the iPad into any PC or Mac computer, transferred into student shared areas.

36 | Notebooks and Desktops: Apple

Apple notebooks and desktops Fast, powerful and creative. Just like the minds of students that use them. MacBook Air & MacBook Pro Every Mac is precisely designed for a long, productive life. Mac notebooks feature durable unibody enclosures and are made from high-quality materials like aluminium and glass — so they’re ready for the rigours of any classroom. The MagSafe power connector is held in place magnetically, so if someone trips over it, the lead disconnects and the computer stays safely put. And the Mac is just as well designed inside. With fast Intel processors, advanced graphics and notebook batteries that last up to 7 hours on a single charge, Mac computers deliver amazing performance for practically any task.

iMac Using the same solid construction and blisteringly fast processors, iMac is the ultimate All-In-One. They are also amazingly connected even when they have only one physical connection. Simply plug them into the

power and everything else is wireless, thanks to a Wi-Fi connection and the Bluetooth mouse and keyboard.

OS X Lion. The world’s most advanced desktop operating system. Every Mac comes with OS X Lion, which includes features that make teaching and learning more dynamic and engaging. Multi-Touch gestures make navigating and zooming in on content a breeze. Full-screen apps use every inch of the Mac display, so you can be completely immersed in your classwork or research. Say goodbye to manually saving documents with Auto Save. And review the history of documents with Versions, comparing older drafts with the current document in a browsable timeline. The built-in apps are great for education too. Safari gives you fast, easy web browsing. Mail and iCal use the contacts in Address Book, so you can quickly send messages or invitations to

individuals and groups both inside and outside your institution. The built-in camera and FaceTime let you bring guests into the classroom via a video chat.

Share and share alike. With AirDrop in OS X Lion, you can send files wirelessly to anyone nearby. Click the AirDrop icon in the Finder sidebar, and your Mac automatically discovers other AirDrop users within about 10 metres of you — perfect for classrooms and study groups.

Work well with others. OS X Lion lets you use Microsoft Office, connect to most printers and cameras, join PC networks and even run Windows. And if you’re switching from a PC to a Mac, Migration Assistant in Lion automatically transfers your documents, contacts, calendars and email accounts.

That’s not true of refills: more than 90% of the ink and toner cartridges sold by the remanufacturers surveyed will ultimately be thrown away.
