Each June the Saudi Arabian racing industry shifts its focus from the capital Riyadh to the summer holiday venue of Taif.

With a programme of weekend racing and family entertainment from June to October, an evening at the races offers our guests music, award winning cuisine, raffles, competitions and all the thrills of the on-track racing action.

With free entry and walk-in restaurants as well as five-star hospitality options available, visitors to the races can enjoy a unique meal with a view from our exclusive Nadb Al Nadi building, located on the first turn of picturesque King Khalid Racecourse, or get up close and personal to galloping racehorses from the running rail accessible via the public concourse.

For the discerning racing fan, the Taif programme offers the chance to see the equine stars of tomorrow in action. Saudi Arabia’s most famous jockeys and trainers base themselves in Taif during the summer where they build towards the season’s Major Cups and it is all captured on live television and beamed to homes all around Saudi Arabia and the region.

Welcome back to King Khalid Racecourse for our 23rd meeting of the season. Today’s nine-race card is one that’s sure to provide plenty of clues for the future, with six of the contests being maidens, as well as a couple of valuable races for older horses. Race one is a maiden for locally-bred horses over 1200m. Adhhar, who runs in the colours of Athbah Racing, finished a distant second on debut last month but could take another step forward with Alexis Moreno taking over in the saddle. Alwathqa, a daughter of Bandini, is an interesting debut runner for trainer Abdulaziz Alhzabi. A 0-80 handicap, worth SAR120,000 and run over 1200m, is next up. This looks competitive, with only three pounds separating the 18 runners in the ratings. Consensus De Vega, who was formerly trained by Roger Varian in the UK, was largely consistent in KSA last season, winning once and placing three times from five starts. This daughter of Lope De Vega hasn’t been at her best in two starts this season, but it worth keeping an eye on under Adel Alfouraidi. Our third race is a maiden over 1400m and sees several interesting newcomers stand their ground. Alaham, a colt by Belardo, makes his debut for the Abdulaziz Bin Jalal stable with Wigberto Ramos taking the ride. Lilly Nation and Wakeed are two that have already run and are likely to improve on their first starts. Another maiden over 1400m follows. Ghost Inmost looks the most interesting newcomer here, being a son of US Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Ghostzapper, and is well drawn in stall three to perform well under Luis Morales. A field of 18 locally-bred horses are set to take their chance over 1600m in race five. Ahmady has only had one previous start, when a strong-finishing third over 1400m at King Abdulaziz Racecourse in Riyadh in March. This son of Constitution is interesting now stepping up in trip on his seasonal return. Race six is for fillies that have won between one and two races in the past. Again, this looks competitive, with another full field of 18 standing their ground over a trip of 1600m. Shajwa finished second in the domestic Group Three Japan’s Cup when last seen in February. She’s won on her reappearance in the past and is by some way the most highly-rated runner in the field, so she could well be the one to beat here. Race seven is an Arabian horses maiden over 1600m. There are only seven runners here and it could be worth looking to Saad Mutlaq’s debutant Watheb Al Khalediah, a son of Laith Al Khalediah, to make a winning introduction, with his six rivals all having had many opportunities to break their respective maidens. An Open race over 2000m sees several interesting contenders line up in opposition. Year Of The Dragon won twice last season, but has yet to find his best form in three starts this campaign. Star Of Wins and Eagle’s Flight are both capable of high-class form and make their seasonal reappearances here. Naif Almindeel’s Eagle’s Flight was very consistent last season and may be up to making a winning reappearance under Alexis Moreno. Our finale is an Arabian horses’ maiden over 2400m. Zahi Al Jasra finished with a late flourish over 2000m when last seen and looks sure to appreciate this step up in trip. Easta Du Soleil may be his biggest threat.
