Eduardo Kobra, “Lincoln Memorial” International Brazilian muralist, Eduardo Kobra, is known for creating large-scale murals in his trademark kaleidoscope of colors. Kobra recently visited the city of Lexington, Ky., and using aerosol paint, created a giant portrait of Kentucky-born President Abraham Lincoln. Possibly the largest and most colorful mural to grace downtown, Kobra replicated an image of the Lincoln Memorial on the back wall of The Kentucky Theatre. Kobra aims to produce images of people who somehow contributed to make the world a better place.

Street Art The Lexington Mural Project Lexington may be best known for its culture of horses and bourbon but the art scene is quickly becoming just as world-class. Lexington is now not only home to some of the most beautiful horse farms in the world but also some of the most prominent public art by world-renowned artists. A driving or walking tour through Lexington will expose you to some amazing public art by famous artists from around the world including Herakut, Eduardo Kobra, Gaia, and Phlegm. These murals are a wonderful addition that only enhances the natural beauty for which Lexington is known.

Phlegm The artist known as “Phlegm” hails from the UK, which is where the bulk of his work can be found. Phlegm earned a living as a cartoonist and illustrator, and many of the larger than life characters that he paints originate from his comics. The detailed ‘pen and ink’ street art has a sinister, nightmarish feel that is characteristic of Phlegm’s unique style. His canvas of choice tends to be abandoned buildings, although his work has also appeared on canal boats and planes. Phlegm is mysterious. He doesn’t like to do interviews and doesn’t have a fancy bio, he lets the work speak for itself.

“Lily and the Silly Monkeys”
Herakut - “The Little Giants and the Goddess of Dreams”
Herakut Herakut is the name of a two-person team of street artists, she’s “Hera,” he’s “Akut.” One of their most famous projects is the Great Storybook Project, based on two imaginary young people, Jay and Lily. The first two murals in the series were painted in Lexington, Ky., and commissioned by two Transylvania University professors, Kurt Gohde and Kremena Todorova. The first mural, “Lily and the Silly Monkeys,” is located at 156 Market Street and the second on the corner of North Limestone and East Sixth Street. Gaia, “Thoroughbred Horses” Young Baltimore street artist, Gaia, succeeds at pulling his viewers into neglected areas of a city. At the corner of West Sixth Street on the side of West Sixth Brewery, you’ll be greeted with Gaia’s “Thoroughbred Horses” leaping off of an empty equestrian pedestal as a keffiyeh print from the United Arab Emirates unfurls in the background.

pring in the Bluegrass is a busy time. Barns are gearing up for the show season to be in full swing, migrating back to Kentucky with blue ribbons on their mind. Beyond miles and miles of historic stonewall fence, carefree foals stretch their legs, holding the hopes of becoming the next stars of equestrian sport. Fans study their calendars with the Keeneland Race Meet, Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event presented by Land Rover, Kentucky Derby, and Kentucky Horse Park welcoming competitors into the ring. Nobody wants to miss a beat. As signature as horses are to the area, the spirits and cocktails equine enthusiasts sip while cheering on their favorites are just as iconic. With Belle’s Cocktail House in downtown Lexington as the backdrop and Hampton Fisher behind the bar with his sidekick Bourbon overseeing it all, we’ve found some of our favorite recipes and stemware paying homage to the classic horsey drinks.

MINT JULEP The Mint Julep became Churchill Downs’ signature drink in 1938 when it began serving the cocktail in souvenir glasses for 75 cents. Today, the Kentucky Derby serves more than 80,000 juleps over the two-day event. With the 139 past winners of the Kentucky Derby races listed on the back of the glass, these glasses have become a collector’s item for many. • • • • •
2 cups sugar 2 cups water Sprigs of fresh mint Crushed ice 2 oz. Early Times Kentucky Whisky
PREPARATION Make a simple syrup by boiling sugar and water together for five minutes. Cool and place in a covered container with six or eight sprigs of fresh mint, then refrigerate overnight. Stir rapidly with a spoon to frost the outside of the cup. Garnish with a sprig of fresh mint.

Belle’s Cocktail House 156 Market Street Lexington, KY 40507 Th [8 p.m. to 2:30 a.m.]
The Atomic Cafe is a little bit of the islands in the city. Young and old alike are fascinated by the murals on the walls! Part of the historic Downtown Restaurant District, Atomic Café features a lively patio scene when weather permits. You’ll love the atmosphere at the Atomic Cafe, with its bright tropical colors, loud, pulsing Caribbean music, and beautifully-designed sports murals. The meals are also a wonder to behold, such as the crispy sweet potato chips, jerk-chicken, steaks, Cuban pork, or the wonderfully tropical-flavored fresh fish. The menu definitely has something for every taste bud. If you’d rather sit outside, the cafe has a large patio, which also has its own bar for ease and convenience. Weekend bands play here, so you’ll always have the chance to enjoy some good, local music. Belle’s is named after one of Lexington’s historic resident’s Belle Breezing (1860 - 1940). Belle’s is Lexington’s newest upscale bar located in the heart of downtown just off Short Street near the Cheapside Pavilion, (just look for the building with the fairy mural). Kent hand-selects unique, fashionable clothing & accessories that will allow mothers and their little ones the chance to greet the world feeling confident about their bodies throughout the many stages of pregnancy.

County Club is a restaurant in Lexington, Ky., committed to exploring and expanding the American tradition of smoking meats using hardwoods and low temperatures. It examines barbecue classics by utilizing responsibly raised Kentucky cow, hog, sheep, goat, and chicken while applying flavor traditions from around the world. Its creations of smoked meats & fish, pickles, pastries, vinegars, and jerky are offered for lunch and dinner, along with sides, daily salads and blackboard specials, craft beer, wine, Magic Beans coffee, and bottles of soda. County Club opened in April 2013 in an old concrete garage designed and refit with booths, tables, an open kitchen, a custom fabricated storefront, and front terrace with a bocce court. Some of its summer events planned include, a music series on the terrace, whole cookery dinners, a film series, and weekly smoked meat ramen nights. Built in 1889, Dudley’s Restaurant was one of the most prominent in downtown Lexington. Not only did it face the rear of the courthouse but it marks the beginning of Market Street. That became the entrance to the aristocratic Gratz Park Residential Historic District. It also was the head of Cheapside, originally the Public Square and location of the Market House, later the site of Court Days. Today this wonderful area has once again become the heart of downtown with the renovation of Cheapside Park and the permanent home of the popular Farmers Market. A complete renovation of Dudley’s new home started in August of 2009. The doors opened in March 2010 to a gorgeous, two-story restaurant that continued its award-winning creative American cuisine, wine list, and service to a steady base of local clientele while making newcomers and visitors feel welcome immediately.

Eclectic. Modern. Avant Garde. Hip. Beyond the ordinary. Scout has been called a lot of things but predictable isn’t one of them. While Scout does have plenty of traditional and period antiques, it also seeks out iconic mid-century modern furnishings, art, and some of the most unique industrial pieces to be found. Scout offers rare Kentucky pieces such as Henry Faulkner paintings, first edition books and sterling silver. It regularly has such things as gas stations letters, terrariums, architectural salvage, and repurposed lighting.
Stella’s Kentucky Deli is dedicated to local farmers and to supporting local food economies. Its mission is to produce simple, high quality foods that emphasize the superior flavors and textures of fresh, local ingredients. To achieve this, Stella’s makes all of its sandwiches, soups, and desserts by hand, in house, using whatever ingredients are seasonably available. You can enjoy a home-cooked meal at the historic downtown location, or call with catering requests.

Stuart Mercer Gentleman’s Shoppe opened in early 2012 following a Holiday Pop-Up Shop Mercer opened with designer Critt Rawlings featuring Crittenden Clothes. During the seasonal pop-up shop, he realized that certain individuals traveled outside of Lexington, and even Kentucky, to find the quality and attention they deserved. With a focus on madeto-measure and custom clothing, Mercer offers quality second-to-none, and gentlemen do not have to travel out-of-town for measurements and fittings. Along with a private label custom line made in the USA, as well as the world’s finest Oxxford Clothes, Mercer also hangs pieces in his shop - Oxxford, Billy Reid, Crittenden, Scott James, and Stuart Mercer. His focus in the sports and casual wear is to bring unique, quality clothing lines that are not familiar to Lexington - thus being a true specialty shop. Blue Heron Steakhouse is a comfortable and chic locally owned restaurant and cocktail bar serving a menu comprised of steakhouse classics and Southern fare such as premium cuts of beef, fresh oysters, locally raised fried chicken, and Caesar salad with fired white anchovies along with an extensive, innovative wine and cocktail list. The Blue Heron has transformed from an upscale hand-crafted cocktail bar to one of Lexington’s finest restaurants with the recent completion of a new kitchen addition. The Blue Heron offers dinner Tuesday through Saturday with a two-sided wood burning fireplace and charming ambience in a renovated historic home. Located in the thriving Jefferson Street corridor, The Blue Heron exemplifies the new style of this popular, revitalized Lexington neighborhood. Spectator’s Guide to Lexington 2014 Equestrian 31

The original Morris Book Shop was opened in 1937 by Jimmy Morris, and had a few owners before it was acquired by Joseph Houlihan in the 1950’s. He owned and operated the store in downtown Lexington, Ky. until its closing in 1978. The new Morris Book Shop was opened in May 2008 by lifelong Lexingtonian Wyn Morris. Although Wyn isn’t related to the original proprietor, store manager Hap Houlihan is the great-nephew of Joe Houlihan. The Morris Book Shop’s goal is to provide the same welcoming atmosphere, authoritative selection, and prompt & friendly service as the original Morris Book Shop, while adding the modern conveniences of online orders & reservations, fast turnaround times for special orders, and community-minded content at morrisbookshop.com. West Sixth Brewing founders Ben, Brady, Joe, and Robin all came to the same conclusion at about the same time – Lexington, Ky., needs more high quality local craft beer. Since they came from very different backgrounds with diverse sets of experiences and talents, they joined forces to create beer that can be enjoyed not only by craft beer experts, but also by those who just want something tasty to drink after going for a bike ride. West Sixth Brewing is located in a space that is as unique as its beers. The brewery, tap room, and beer garden are in The Bread Box, a recent redevelopment of the century-old Rainbo Bread Factory located in the historic Northside Neighborhood. Being at the corner of West Sixth and the hopping Jefferson Street corridor, our brewery will be near Transylvania University and the future Bluegrass Community and Technical College campus and borders the next proposed leg of the Legacy Bike Trail.

This is my horse
™
My first pony was named "Cash and Carry ," a great jumping pony that was passed down through my siblings. He was just one of the horses that prepared me for the experience I've had with Brunello. I know that nutrition has a lot to do with how Brunello performs. I believe in a simple, but powerful diet to fuel healthy cells, which is why I choose Platinum. I also give the horses Platinum Balance because the better Brunello's stomach feels, the higher he jumps! If I wasn't a Hunter rider, I would be a nutritionist because you are what you eat.
