FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Pony Finals Competitors and Guests: On behalf of the US Equestrian Federation, I am pleased to welcome all of you, whether a new or returning competitor, to the 50th annual USEF Pony Finals presented by Collecting Gaits Farm at the Kentucky Horse Park in beautiful Lexington, Kentucky. In this week, the USEF Pony Finals encompasses three championship competitions including the 2017 USEF Hunter Pony National Championship presented by Sallee Horse Vans, the Marshall & Sterling/USEF Pony Medal Finals, and the USEF National Pony Jumper Championships.

The Pony Finals has a long history dating back to 1959, and has grown each year into the incredible event we enjoy today. The USEF Pony Finals presented

by Collecting Gaits Farm hosts a truly special gathering of ponies and their young riders, trainers, and support groups. While qualifying alone is a great accomplishment, competing in the Finals is an especially rewarding experience for these young pony riders and their families. The social events and camaraderie amongst the competitors fosters many lasting friendships and a love of equestrian sport. It would not be possible to host these championships without our sponsors and contributors to whom we are extremely grateful for their continued support.

Only through their generosity and valuable contributions are we able to present this wonderful event.

In 1959,

The prestigious Van Sinderen Trophy for International Pony Competition

the British National Pony Society challenged American Pony riders under age 17 to an International Pony Hunter Competition. First held at the prestigious National Horse Show in New York City, the best U.S. ponies and riders met head-to-head with the best British ponies and riders in the small and large divisions.

The first competition emphasized conformation and under saddle performance. Jumping ability was tested over two fences and counted for 20 percent of the final score. The American riders in this inaugural competition were narrowly defeated 10-9. Two years later, the British National Pony Society hosted the competition. The American competitors prepared by spending a rigorous two weeks at the famed U.S. Equestrian Center in Gladstone, NJ. The training proved beneficial, as the U.S. returned with the trophy by a score of 13-9.

Celebrating 50 YEARS

In 1967 the United States Equestrian Federation (formally AHSA) created what was then called the AHSA Hunter Pony Competition as a national event, open to all members of the USEF who met the qualifying criteria.

replace the International Pony Competition has now grown into one of the largest events for ponies throughout the US. Back then, each state could only host one qualifying event, where only a pony placing first or second overall in an “A� rated section would qualify for the finals. Ponies were

to be split into 2 sections – 13 hands and under, competing over fences set at 2’6”, and ponies over 13 hands, competing over fences set at 3’. Today, multiple qualifying classes are held in each state across the country. Although a pony must still acquire one of the two highest scores of the section by winning a championship or reserve championship in an “AA” or “A” rated Regular or Green Hunter Pony section, many other aspects of the qualification specifications as well as the overall Pony Finals championship event have evolved over the years.

Since 1984, the finals have included the popular Pony Medal Championships, an equitation competition. Riders qualify for the equitation finals by winning a blue ribbon or by

accumulating 30 points in an USEF Pony Medal qualifying class. The 2001 USEF Pony Finals marked the addition of the National Pony Jumper Championships. Ponies and riders qualify based on annually produced Selection Procedures.

2005 marked the start of what was to be a long history of Pony Finals calling Kentucky “home”, when the event moved to the famed Kentucky Horse Park. The Championships have seen abundant growth since its inception, and today are considered by many to be the most prestigious and celebrated events of their kind in the United States. The 2017 year marks the 50th anniversary of the inception of Pony Finals as the National Championship.

This six-day, three discipline, championship event hosts more than 500 young riders with talented pony mounts, while hundreds of spectators and families cheer them on. The Hunter Pony Championship’s three-phase competition lasts five days, covers both the Green and Regular Pony sections, and judges the pony’s conformation, way of moving under saddle and fence jumping ability. While the Pony Medal Championship is a rigorous one day event that test young riders in a head-to-head competition judging their ability to navigate and maintain proper equitation through a technical and demanding course of fences. Although the Pony Jumper Championships do not hold as long of a history at Pony Finals, they provide a vital opportunity for

young riders to compete during a multi-day event on both team and individual levels.

Experience gained here at Pony Finals just might one day become a building block for a future US Equestrian Team Olympic rider.

Former Pony Finals competitors who have gone on to represent the US Team in International and Olympic events include Georgina Bloomberg, Greg Best, Reed Kessler, Alison Firestone Robitaille, Jessica Springsteen, and Molly Ashe Cawley.
