WELCOME
to the International Polo Club Welcome to the International Polo Club Palm Beach for another exhilarating year of high-goal polo in sunny South Florida. All of us at IPC are eager to see our loyal fans and supporters return to watch these fantastic athletes, both equine and human, play one of our civilization’s oldest sports. This season, our competition calendar will be very busy with polo matches taking place almost daily on multiple fields across the property. A total of six world-class tournaments will take place with more than 14 teams of professional players. I am excited to announce the GAUNTLET of POLO™ series will also be returning to the IPC fields after a successful inaugural year. Any team who consecutively wins all three tournaments will be awarded an additional $500,000 in prize money, matching the prize money distributed, and totaling to an unrivaled $1,000,000 in potential prize money across the three tournaments. A primary goal we have at IPC is to continue bringing the game we love to a broader audience and to help increase the sport’s participation and accessibility. Over the past two years, the International Polo School has accomplished that by attracting new polo enthusiasts as it welcomed over 100 students with lessons occurring three to five times a day. These new players came from hunter/jumper barns, a polo background, or were completely new to equestrian sport. The school will continue this year at IPC along with a robust low goal league schedule. As our team arrives at our fourth season managing this beautiful and expansive property, we are reminded that polo is an essential component of the equestrian heartbeat in Wellington, Florida during the winter months and are committed to ensuring its success for years to come. I hope you enjoy your time with us at IPC this season and all that this wonderful venue has to offer. Whether sipping a glass of champagne and eating brunch with friends in The Veuve Clicquot Pavilion, experiencing the rush of sport up close from the boards, or taking advantage of the many member amenities offered throughout the year, I thank you for your continued commitment and support as we strive to bring polo to historic heights in 2020. We wish all of the competitors the best of luck this year! Sincerely,
Mark Bellissimo Equestrian Sport Productions and the Wellington Equestrian Partners

PLAYER TO WATCH
Player to Watch
TIMMY DUTTA When did you start riding and playing polo? I started riding when I was about six years old. I started jumping, and then around 12, I tried polo for the first time. I haven’t looked back since! I started with Rubin Gracida and my father. My dad played polo in India. What’s it like sharing the sport with your parents? It’s interesting! I share the connection with my father for polo, and my mother, who competes in high-level dressage. Her involvement in the sport with me is more on a horse basis, because dressage is the base of all equestrian disciplines. Her training has helped me out with my own riding, and she’s influenced me to become a better horseman. Any key players/teammates that were influential in your success? So far, I’d say it would be Lucas Diaz Alberdi. We’ve been playing together for about 3 years. His father, Piki, has been very influential in my training over the last five years, and it’s really shaped me and helped my growth. Of course, my father has been instrumental as well. What is some advice you would give to a young player who would like to advance in the sport? I’d offer a couple points: One would be to believe in yourself. Self-confidence is a big part of the mental game. Two would be to grow your string of horses. Definitely focus on that! Even if you can’t afford to buy a large number of horses or top-dollar horses, always try to improve your string. Even if it’s just being in the barn, working on their feed, their fitness program, working with the vet, farrier, and grooms in the stable. To me, the most important aspect to advance is that you get up every day, go to the barn, and constantly try to improve. Always trying to be better and keeping a good attitude. What have you been up to this summer? This summer, I worked with my father at the Pan Am Games in Lima. I was working as a logistics consultant for The Dutta Corporation. We brought in a couple hundred horses for the Pan Ams. They were beautiful Games, and I have nothing but good things to say about the Peruvian people and the Pan Am Games staff.

Working with my father is very fun honestly. He’s a really good guy. I get to learn a lot from him about the business, and how to work not only with people, but with horses, too. It’s really a joy for me. Plus, I get to spend more time with my father. Has anything outside of polo helped you become better in the sport — mentally or physically? Keeping fit is a huge factor, both physically and mentally. I believe polo is a huge mental game. I’m studying psychology in school right now, and I can apply some of the things I’ve learned in class to the conceptual part of the game. It’s also good to do things outside of polo. I like to go out fishing or to the beach, and all of that’s right here in Florida, so it’s amazing. It’s good to recharge a little bit sometimes. Do you have any new horses that you are excited about? Mr. Musty is still the main man and you will definitely see him in the Gauntlet! I have a new grey mare who I started playing at the end of last season when I stepped in for SD Farms. I will also be bringing one horse up from Argentina. Her name is Purpura, and she’ll come to play in the US Open with me. Where do you see yourself in 5 to 10 years? I see myself in the sport of polo. With the right push, I hope to be a top competitor on the international circuit. I’ll also pursue my father’s company, and work very hard there. I’d love to work for him, but mainly I’d like to focus on polo and becoming a better player right now. I’m in my last year of high school and ideally, I’d like to take college courses online so that I still have time to pursue my career in polo.

INTERNATIONAL POLO SCHOOL
INTERNATIONAL POLO SCHOOL The International Polo School at IPC returns for another eventful season in Wellington, Florida. Now in its third year, the school allows new fans of all ages of the sport to learn the rules of the game firsthand with individual lessons, simulation training, and team practices. Many of its students derived from a background in the hunter/jumper discipline. The school employs USPA-certified instructors to teach the basics of riding, stick and ball techniques, and the overall strategy of a four-on-four match. What started out as a small program, has now grown into a full-time operation, with new students and ponies arriving each season and lessons being held daily on the IPC property. The school has also expanded its low goal league to include four 4 goal 20

tournaments and four 8 goal tournaments. Taking place from January through April, these tournaments are seen as a stepping stone for the more experienced students, allowing them to transfer what they’ve learned during lessons onto the playing field. At the end of each tournament, winning teams will be presented with awards as well as trophies for the Best Playing Pony and Most Valuable Player. Behind the Lines:
THE TEAM AT
POSTAGE STAMP FARM
When you work in the polo industry, the phrase ‘it takes a village’ can be applied on a daily basis. With so many horses to feed, workout, groom and transport, a high-goal polo team needs all hands on deck all the time. Luckily, Postage Stamp Farm has its own village in the form of the Torres family. For the past nineteen years, Anaciel and Patricia Torres have been working with Brandon Phillips as his head grooms. The team slowly expanded over recent years to include their daughter, Erika and her husband, David, as well as the grandchildren, Kimberly, Melanie and Camela. Whether it includes horse care or auto care, the Torres family can do anything and everything! We sat down with head of the household (and barn), Anaciel, to learn more about the family dynamic. Who are you grooming for this season specifically? Both Patricia and I work mainly with Brandon’s horses. Our son-in-law, David, started wokring for PSF last season and is primarily in charge of Annabelle’s horses. This year, Brandon will have 24 horses total in the barn. How long have you been working for Brandon? This will be our nineteenth year that Patricia and I have been with him. About five years ago, we joined forces with Annabelle and started taking care of her horses, too. Where did the PSF organization travel this summer for polo? We went to Greenwich, CT and Kentucky for most of the summer. We got back to Wellington in late November. What is everyone’s day-to-day responsibilities? We all work as a team. So everything from the feeding and cleaning, to riding and medicating. Plus, David looks after the whole facility. He fixes fences, paints the barn, services the vehicles, anything and everything!

What’s your favorite part about the job? I don’t really have just one favorite thing, I like all of it! For us, it’s not a job, it’s our whole life and way of living. I know that Patricia’s favorite part is preparing for the games and getting the horses ready — making sure they look perfect for the match! Do you have a favorite horse? Why is he/she your favorite? One of my favorites of Brandon’s is Muffin Top. She’s the last homebred we have, and Patricia and I used to look after the mother of Muffin Top years ago. One of my other favorites is called Yoda.
started with horses a little over a year ago, and he’s really picked it up quick. My two older sons both used to work with us here and have since moved on to other jobs in the industry as well. Now the grandchildren are getting into it a bit more. They come to the barn every day after school and help with the yard work or feeding. They just got their own saddle last year for Christmas too, and Annabelle has a mini pony that’s coming to the barn in the next month so the girls will soon have their own horse to take care of each day.
How long have you been working in the polo industry? I’ve always worked in polo, probably close to 30 years now. Before we came to work with Brandon, I was with a patron in Mexico and then groomed for Mike Azzaro for several years. Do you have any special grooming “tips and tricks?” All our tricks are family secrets, so we can’t share! No, just kidding, but we don’t really have any special tips. We just know all the horses really well and can tell when one isn’t feeling good or has an injury coming on. We can understand when something is off, before it gets too serious. Any other interesting facts about the Torres family? Jose is the oldest son, 2005. Tona was Annabelle’s groom for about 5 years. I think it’s interesting that our whole family seems to have a knack for horses and caretaking — even the ones that married into the family. David just

ARENA POLO RECAP
In 2019, the exciting arena polo phenomenon, Gladiator Polo™ returned to the grounds of the International Polo Club Palm Beach (IPC) for an action-packed season. Four international teams were formed after the first-ever live player draft in the history of an equestrian sport was held at IPC. Teams included many professional players that have made a name for themselves both on the field and in the arena, including Tommy Biddle, Pelon Escapite, Michael Azzaro, Santiago Toccalino, Mariano Obregon, and Toro Ruiz. The 2019 schedule featured five matches, beginning in March and concluding in mid-April. Fans were able to enjoy the games from grandstand seating or in the VIP Pavilion with a dinner buffet and cocktails. Plans to grow the Gladiator Polo™ tournament series to include more teams and take place over several months are in progress for the coming years in Wellington.

ALEXANDER SOLOTZEW:
Internationally Known Artist Discovers a New Love for the Game of Polo Alexander Solotzew was born and raised by a celebrated artistic family in Kaliningrad, Russia. Both of his parents were avid artists and teachers of the trade. At an early age, Solotzew developed an interest and passion for horses and grew up riding during the summer time in Russia. While he studied at the Russian Academy of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg, Solotzew often visited the stables to observe and paint the horses in action. It is said that the horse is one of the most difficult animals to paint because of their intricate shapes and active behavior. Therefore, the mastership of the artist can often be proven by his or her work with the animal. Throughout his career, Solotzew has been sketching horses around the world and much of his work is featured in international museums and galleries. Solotzew is categorized as an avant-garde artist, which is considered to be someone that is significantly ahead in its technique, subject matter, or application in art. Most commonly, it is an artist with experimental and unorthodox work. For over 40 years, Solotzew has been travelling throughout Europe, Latin America and the United States to find unique art subjects, open new studios and display his finished collections – many of which have involved horses. In 2000, Solotzew started following circus trains in Europe to sketch horses performing their incredible stunts to live audiences. Next, his unquenchable search for new subjects brought him to discover the Camargue horses, which are generally considered to be one of the oldest breeds in the world, indigenous to southern France. During his journey to Spain, Solotzew realized the beauty of Andalusian stallions and later, in Latin America, he enjoyed riding and sketching rodeo horses. Anywhere he went, Solotzew was fascinated with the beauty and freedom that these elegant creatures embodied. The artist is always in awe of how horses develop their stamina and agility, for which they are known for today.

Just over a year ago, Solotzew first discovered the game of polo. As he was driving by the grounds of the Sarasota Polo Club, he noticed horses and players pra cticing on the field. Solotzew immediately stopped his car and started sketching the scene. It captivated him so much that he became an avid fan of polo, attending matches each week. Solotzew has been fascinated with the exquisite game, as well as the unity of the keen horses and the athletic players. This discovery led to the creation of a new series of large format realistic paintings appropriately called “Polo Club.” In his artworks, Solotzew reflects the beauty and power of horses, while revealing the true identity of the players. He expresses the game of polo as the fusion of three vital elements: motion, emotion and devotion.

In addition to the Game of Polo, Solotzew has been diligently working on a variety of themes in collaboration with the Russian State Museum in St. Petersburg which bring his inspirations to life such as the Russian Ballet and the Circus, the Tango in Paris, the Carnival in Venice, Sky is for Mozart, Fields of Provence, Life in Florida and much more. The evolving art of Solotzew is aimed to make the cultural bridge between Europe and the United States stronger and long-lasting. At present, Solotzew continues to work on various art projects and conduct solo exhibitions across Europe and United States. His artwork has been acquired by private collections all over the world and some of his creations have been accepted by international museums. He currently maintains two “Fine Art Solotzew” galleries in Pfalz, Germany and Sarasota, Florida.

HIGH CALIBER COMPETITION
Returns to the 2020 Adequan® Global Dressage Festival

Fans and competitors are marking their calendars for the ninth annual Adequan® Global Dressage Festival (AGDF), returning to Equestrian Village at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center (PBIEC) in Wellington, Florida, from January 8 through March 29, 2020. As the largest and longest running dressage circuit in the world, the AGDF welcomes equestrians from all over the globe to compete across a ten-week schedule of events, and offers international and national level opportunities for dressage professionals and amateurs alike. “We are delighted to welcome dressage enthusiasts back for another year of top competition,” said ADGF Director of Sport, Thomas Baur. “This season is imperative, as it delivers opportunities for competitors seeking out World Cup qualification, as well as Olympic and Paralympic preparation. This year, the CDI 5* serves as a mandatory outing for the U.S. dressage riders striving for team placement; a group of Japanese competitors will make the journey to work toward Tokyo 2020; and a CDI-W has been added into the last week of competition as a final 56

opportunity for riders contending for FEI World Cup Finals. The 2020 AGDF will also strategically host two CPEDIs in January, as a way to accommodate athletes looking to achieve scores before Paralympic qualification ends.” As Baur explained, the season serves as a strong competition scene for riders seeking to gain more experience with their mounts, and 2019 Pan American Games team silver medalist Jennifer Baumert (USA) credited the show for allowing her to do just that in years past. “AGDF is one of my favorite horse shows,” she said. “As a true pinnacle of dressage in the United States, the people, the atmosphere, the international flair all make it an incredible place to bring your horses to, to prepare them.” “I think it’s incredibly beneficial to have this circuit,” Baumert continued. “It has really put the US on that international stage. The fact that we can attract so many riders from other nations is a major accomplishment, and a big deal for our sport.”

GREAT CHARITY CHALLENGE
PARTNERSHIPS LEAD TO SUCCESS
for The 2020 Great Charity Challenge presented by Fidelity Investments® The 2020 Great Charity Challenge, presented by Fidelity Investments® (GCC) will once again sharpen the focus on the power of united communities this coming February. Partnerships between non-profit organizations, the equestrian community, and its supporters are at the forefront of what makes the GCC successful every year and leads to helping thousands in Palm Beach County.
Having distributed $13.5 million to over 240 Palm Beach County non-profit organizations to date, the exciting event hinges on the generous support of the equestrian community and local business partners. Through an open application process, Palm Beach County-based charities applied to participate in the event’s eleventh edition. Following a thorough vetting process in partnership with Bank of America, drawing of the first 24 charities took place throughout Palm Beach County the first week of December. All selections were posted live online through the GCC’s social media platforms (@greatcharitychallenge on Facebook and Instagram). Fortunate selectees will meet their randomly paired equestrian teams on Saturday, February 1, 2020, to receive a share of the $1+ million dollar purse. The winning team’s non-profit will receive $150,000 while all pre-selected participants are guaranteed a minimum grant of $15,000. Founded in 2010 by Paige Bellissimo and Equestrian Sport Productions, the GCC has maintained its values of professionalism by being “impact-driven.” Transparency guarantees impartiality with its public lottery style selection process and that one hundred percent of the money raised gets distributed to local non-profits. Over the last five years, the relay-style show jumping competition has brought team spirit to a new level by incorporating themes into each yearly celebration. With riders dressed up in costumes and horses adorned to match them, this year’s theme of “Broadway Musicals” will pay recognition to the wisdom commonly found in these plays. From “You can change the world if you change your mind” (Kinky Boots), “Even the darkest night will end and the sun will rise!” (Les Misérables) and “If you stand for nothing, Burr, what will you fall for?” (Hamilton), all who attend the event will leave inspired to foster the change they wish to see in their own backyards. Anne Caroline Valtin, Executive Director of the GCC, commented, “With Equestrian Sport Productions’ full support by covering 100% of the costs associated with ©ESP

hosting the GCC, to the generous donors who join in our mission to create a positive impact locally, the riders who donate their talents and horses for the evening, and all the way to the amazing non-profits who work tirelessly to better Palm Beach County, the event is truly a showcase of the power of partnerships.” The GCC competition during the 2020 Winter Equestrian Festival at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center will offer free general admission and will be held Saturday evening, February 1, 2020, at 6:00 p.m. Free parking will be located at 13500 South Shore Blvd., Wellington, Florida, home to the Adequan® Global Dressage Festival show grounds. OLD HICKORY BOURBON
A Taste of History:
OLD HICKORY BOURBON
The history of Old Hickory Bourbon is as unusual and complex as its namesake, President Andrew Jackson. Deeply rooted in American tradition, Old Hickory Bourbon delivers a refined taste and unique character dating back to the 1800’s. Bourbon became the unofficial spirit of the South during the 19th century while General Jackson, known as Old Hickory, was enjoying his own bourbon blend from a distillery on the grounds of the Hermitage, his Tennessee plantation home. In 1896, the first expression of Old Hickory Rye Whiskey was produced in Chattanooga by E.R. Betterton & Co. as a nod to the former president. As the love of bourbon flourished and expanded outside the south, so did the Old Hickory brand. It gained 74

national distribution after the Repeal of Prohibition when Philadelphia-based Publicker Industries produced several different expressions, including an 86-proof straight bourbon whiskey. Advertisements and old bottles from the Publicker era have become vintage collectibles, helping to paint bourbon’s colorful history. In 2011, the R.S. Lipman Company brought Old Hickory back home to Tennessee when Robert Lipman acquired the trademark and resurrected the brand. Committed to the long, storied heritage of Old Hickory, Lipman selected longtime Seagram’s master blender, Pam Soule, to help create their unique mash bills at the former site of the historic Joseph E. Seagram’s facility in Lawrenceburg, IN.
Each award-winning expression of Old Hickory is made from proprietary blends from the stocks R.S. Lipman Company owns. The water used to distill Old Hickory is drawn from deep, rechargeable ancient glacial aquifers dating back 1.2 million years which formed the Ohio River basin as it looks today. All the corn is sourced from farms within a 250-mile radius of the distillery.
series the Hermitage Reserve was named for the beautiful Greek revival mansion where President Andrew Jackson and his wife, Rachel, frequently entertained guests at their home. It’s rumored that a fire in the mid 1800s destroyed a secret distillery on the Hermitage grounds. The Hermitage Reserve Rye is a tribute to the rich bourbon culture and its authentic American roots.
OLD HICKORY STRAIGHT BOURBON – WHITE LABEL Old Hickory Straight Bourbon is bottled at 86 proof, which is the traditional “Perfect Proof” preferred historically by American distillers. Created for modern whiskey cocktails and bourbon connoisseurs, Old Hickory Straight Bourbon is rich and near mahogany in color. With intense spice and oak aromas, this bold bourbon is masculine and displays notes of cedar and gingerbread. The over-proof delivers a lingering finish of pie crust and sweet tobacco. Old Hickory Straight Bourbon has garnered many accolades in blind tastings, including: Triple Gold Medal for Taste - Microliquor Awards (2017) and Best in Class / Platinum - American Bourbon - SIP Awards International Spirits Competition (2015)
OLD HICKORY WHISKEY – BLACK LABEL Old Hickory Whiskey is a Meritage of bourbon and whiskey bottled at 80 proof and blended to deliver classic flavors for traditional bar mixing or sipping straight. Amber in color, this crowd-pleasing bourbon is bright and spicy with attractive aromas of cherry custard, pistachio gelato, and almond nougat. With a silky medium-to-full bodied taste, Old Hickory Blended Bourbon exhibits a tingling, engaging finish with lingering flavors of white toffee, dried cherry, and honey custard. Old Hickory Straight Bourbon has garnered many accolades in blind tastings, including: 93 Points - Ultimate Spirits Challenge (2015) and Gold Medal - San Francisco World Spirits Competition (2015)

AN ESTABLISHED LEGACY: OLD HICKORY BOURBON AND POLO Robert Lipman is the third generation in a family with deep roots in beverage alcohol. With 45 years in the industry, he now oversees RSL Holdings, comprised of multiple companies spanning all facets of wine, spirits, beer and horses! Robert’s affinity for horses developed when he was young and eventually lead to 35 years of playing polo. He achieved two goals and played up to 18-goal polo before retiring from the sport… although he will never truly retire from horses. Robert oversees operations and facilities at Graymar Farms which is named for his two daughters, Gracey (Lipman) Donahue and Margaret (Lipman) Orthwein. Robert saw the opportunity to put together a world-class equine organization with the talented people and horses literally in his backyard in Franklin, TN. With proven bloodlines and breeding heritage, Robert and his sonin-law, Stevie Orthwein, decided to field a team for the Gauntlet of Polo. Old Hickory Bourbon, with its unique, storied past, is building a legacy for the future.
Soft, smooth and balanced, Old Hickory Hermitage Reserve is a wonderful execution of what a 6-yearold reserve rye whiskey should be. Bottled at 96 proof with a mash bill of 95% Premium Rye, only 341 cases were produced in 2019. The limited-edition 2020 INTERNATIONAL POLO CLUB

2020 INTERNATIONAL POLO CLUB
THE POLO PLAYER + TEAM MANAGER How did you get started in polo? Who did you play with/for when you first started? I grew up just north of Toronto, Canada on a horse farm, and it was literally 10 minutes down the road from the Toronto Polo Club. My father used to play there as well as my brother, so I just grew up playing with them during the summers for fun. At the time, there was no such thing as professional polo players in Canada. Everyone just had a few horses and it was a social thing with your friends. I started playing actual matches when I was eleven, and then when I was seventeen, a good family friend, Todd Offen, was managing White Birch Farm at the time and they needed a zero-goal polo for the Florida winter season of 1995. Todd happened to see me playing that summer back home and invited me down to Florida to try out for the team. I didn’t even realize I was trying out, I thought I was just coming to visit some friends, and at the end of practice Peter Brant came over and said “Ok, you’re staying in Florida and playing the 26-goal season with us this winter.” Before that, I had played just two 8-goal tournaments in my entire life. I was with them for three to four years, and then trained under Memo Gracida for another three years before I went out on my own in about 2001 with the help of Memo. How did you get involved with Postage Stamp Farm? Nic Roldan, Kris Kampsen and I donated a package of group lessons to the Just World Live Auction. After they finished their six lessons, Annabelle came up to me and asked if she could keep taking lessons. By the fall season, she started playing chukkers and the following winter she was into low-goal tournaments. Within five years, she went from taking lessons to playing in the U.S. Open tournament last year, but she was a showjumper before this, so she already had a good riding foundation. What are some of your day to day responsibilities as a team manager? Any aspect of polo that Annabelle’s involved in, I manage that. It started out with just her lessons and has grown
now into the whole team. It also includes finding her new horses, overseeing the barn, like making sure the right things are ordered and the right grooms are in place, and where we go play in the summers. I play with her when it fits. For instance, this summer I played with her in Greenwich for the East Coast Open, but this will be the second winter that I will just be managing the team from the sidelines, but before that I played the high-goal with her here. Annabelle and I have this special symbol of our working relationship. It’s a circle inside of a box. The box is the boundaries that I’m given, technically the budget, and what she wants to be involved in. My job is to keep that ball rolling within the box. Everything staying within a budget, while she keeps having fun and wanting to move forward with the team and playing high-goal tournaments. If the ball stops, that means she’s stopped having fun and the whole thing explodes, or I go outside the box and that’s not part of the deal. So my job is to keep her happy and enjoying the sport, whether that’s with me on or off the field, it doesn’t matter. It doesn’t matter who’s on the field, we just do what’s best for her and the organization. Did you play other sports growing up or was it always horses and polo? Hockey. Hockey was actually what I wanted to do for a living. I was always in the top level for each age group and would travel all over for competitions. I never imagined I would’ve grown up to be a professional polo player, it was always just a hobby. Any advice for up and coming players trying to make it in the high-goal polo world? It’s an expensive sport to get into and to start on your own, so you really need to start young and you need to go into a bigger operation where expenses are covered. You might make the minimal amount, but you have no expenses, and if you’re good you’ll get into practices and picked up by a team. Using other people’s things is helpful to, that’s how I did it. PROFILE: BRANDON PHILLIPS horses and then hopefully your abilities will be seen and then you can start to grow from there and buy your own gear and string. Has anything outside of polo helped you succeed in the sport? I think any type of sport helps you, you know, they’re all connected. Growing up playing team sports, working with teammates and organizations. Nowadays, you see how everyone has a personal trainer and works out at a gym like other professional sports, but I remember when I first got here as a kid I wasn’t allowed to go to the gym. They told me you’ll get too stiff and not work out properly. I remember at halftime I was out throwing a football around with friends and Todd Offen came over and almost killed me, saying I was going to throw my arm out. So it’s funny how much it’s changed over the years, the whole mentality of the players and the sport. However, polo has gotten a lot more physical over the years and a lot more demanding. The horses are faster, the players are better, so everyone’s trying to figure out their angle to keep surviving.
THE SURVIVOR + PHILANTHROPIST Can you talk a little bit about your charity work? How did you became involved with it? Over the years, I started thinking about how I could get more involved with cancer patients and survivors. It took me awhile to even want to think about it. I was sick when I was just 15 years old, and we only started the organization six years ago. Terrie Mooney came to me asking if I wanted to help put on a polo event for the Leukemia Lymphoma Society. That’s how it all started — just a game and a small cocktail party at IPC. We ended up raising $40,000 that first night. It continued to grow each year, raising a couple hundred thousand, and then in these last few years we’ve gotten close to half a million. We didn’t have the event last year, because we decided to make a few changes to the organization. Rather than turning over one big check to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS), I wanted to be more in charge of where the money was going and see how it was making a difference in the local community. 78

So, we made our own 501c3, and now we will have five total benefactors including LLS, the Kids Cancer Foundation, Pediatric Oncology Support Team (P.O.S.T), Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital (JDCH), and the Miami Cancer Institute. How do you decide where the money goes? Before we select our benefactors, we like to go and visit the centers and see where we can help out the most. For instance, JDCH has an area where girls can go to get wigs or get their nails painted and the hospital just funds it with extra cash when they have it, so we can give them $20,000 to keep it running for the next two years and see real kids benefitting from our efforts now. My all out, final goal would be to have a mobile bus that provides chemo treatment. Basically in between Miami and Tampa, there are no major cancer treatment centers so I’d love sponsor something that can come to the area and help out families instead of parents having to drive hours a day, because they can’t afford the gas money or lose their jobs with all that extra driving. I mean we can’t build a hospital for $100 million, but we can help in a smaller way right around here. What are you plans and goals long-term for Polo For Life? Long term, we want Polo For Life to be the go-to resource for families in South Florida after their child gets diagnosed. We could suggest anything from certain hospitals and treatment centers to programs that can help pay bills or find a new place to live closer to the hospital. Basically, we would be the “Google” for cancer patients and answer any questions. We want to be the first number people call, to offer support and direction when families feel like their lives are falling apart. When is this year’s Polo For A Purpose event? This year’s event is Monday, January 20 on Martin Luther King Day. Normally, we do just a luncheon with a game afterwards, but this year we’re trying to expand our general admission section, going to have different food vendors for all the spectators to enjoy in their seats or at their tailgates. Then the VIP Dinner will follow in the Pavilion with a unique Indian Theme, hoping to have some camels there too! Live auction Future plans involve hosting events in Las Vegas but first and foremost, we want to focus on the South Florida community.
