SPACE REORGANIZATION OF ORPHANED CHILDREN ESTABLISHMENT IN TIRANA, ALBANIA PORTFOLIO_ERAZMIA GJIKOPULLI
“Zyber Hallulli” is an existing establishment for orphaned children in Tirana. This project aims to reorganize the interior spaces to better fit the age & interests of the children as well as stimulate new activities that positively UNDERGROUND FLOOR affect their well being. The existing building has a strong institutional character, many of its large spaces are 1st & 2nd FLOOR left unused and the interiors feel detached from the age and character of the kids . On the other hand, the mainGROUND rooms FLOOR have big windows that provide qualitative lighting.

SPACE FOR VISITORS AND THE ADMINISTRATORS : 515 M^2 SPACE FOR THE CHILDREN AND EENAGERS : 437 M^2
The concept of this projects supports three main points. First, the implementation of an atrium to provide communication between different levels . Another strong element is the creation of a common corridor that not only helps distribution but is also a common interactive space where children can meet and spend time together. Furthermore, the residential existing modules shrink to host 24 children per floor (instead of 16). In addition to increasing the capacities of the establishment, reduction of the existing space increases surveillance, but also the sense of personalization of space by children. In terms of functionality, in addition to private apartments, thematic spaces have been created that bring children together. In the case of teenagers (who are placed on their own floor), these thematic spaces are related to workshops such as carpentry, tailoring, and kitchens, so that mature ages also benefit from crafts while having fun.

CENTQUATRE WAREHOUSE IN PARIS, FRANCE
PORTFOLIO_ERAZMIA GJIKOPULLI
Centquatre is a neo classical building located between Rue de Tanger and Rue d’Aubervilliers in Paris. Currently, it lacks a permanent function, so this project’s aim is to provide activities in a portion of the building while preserving its envelope and main features. The proposed function is a food market. The added elements are: a new beam system that leans on 2 existing cranes within the space; proper lightning; and modular flexible booths.

This project is located on the side of a crossroad in the city of Durrës. It overlooks the city’s historic site in the north-east and its requested functionality is a resdential building with services on the ground floor. The main aims of this project regard the comfort and well being of the residents within their houses by creating spaces that host the standard activities as well as keep them flexible to adapt to specific user needs. Special attention is also given to the common spaces in order to stimulate interraction, not only between the building’s residents but also the pedestrians that pass by this space. site

REQUALIFICATION OF A POST-INDUSTRIAL ZONE IN THE PORT OF DURRËS, ALBANIA
PORTFOLIO_ERAZMIA GJIKOPULLI
The 3000 years of history of the city of Durrës have always been related to the strategic and economic importance that comes as a result of the presence of its port. As the city has expanded through the years, the port has constantly adapted to various functions. Once it was known mostly for its commercial activities, while now it’s dedicated to passengers and the industrial development. However, today the port has become an isolated stripe. It is enclosed within physical barriers (you can only access it by buying or having special permission cards) as well as it has a strict zoning of industrial activities. Currently, the port is composed of 4 terminals (passengers, merchandise, containers, refuge). The only contact between the citizens and the port is through the passenger’s terminal. According to Durrësi’s PPV, a part of the current industrial activities will be moved to another area in the city (Porto Romano). Consequently, the existing post-industrial zone will be opened to the citizens. Additionally, the industrial functions will be redistributed within the area; the newly opened space will be redeveloped with activities that welcome visitors and also break the isolated stripe that divides the sea from the city. The main object of this part of the waterfront will be a public aquarium, the location of which will be set by the analysis on the context and a study of the fluxes that enter the port. The fluxes will be a starting point to formally approach the aquarium. The Aquarium will be the linking point in a system that aims to create a new relation between the sea and the city fabric. Furthermore, there will be new functions to complete the area: restaurants in front of a new yacht port, and a fish market facing an existing fish port. The whole space will be traversed by pedestrian promenades, a square and two sitting staircases overlooking the sea. The main beneficiaries of the project are the citizens of Durrës, who will now have a new public space and many activities that cannot be found elsewhere within the city. The project also favours the tourists by adding a new attraction to the city. The advantage of placing this project in the port, is also the closeness to the ferries and cruise ships that arrive in Durrës as well as proximity to the historical city center. The research is mostly based on actual case studies as well as articles and analysis made on them. A reference closely related to the situation of Durrës, is the project of Porto Antico in Genova. Durrës and Genova are similar in: the importance the respective ports have in the regions where they belong; the challenge of linking the port and the city while integrat-

GENTLE INVASION This project is about addressing the topic of adaptive design strategies for tourism and unpredictable landscape mutations caused by climate change. The challenge was to design a hybrid system capable of responding to different coastline scenarios influenced by sea level rise in the Borsh Valley, situated along the Ionian Sea in the Albanian Riviera. This projects proposal is a set of channels (capillars) at the site that orient sea water as its level rises. Each scenario is supported by a set of activities that suit the change as well as the main goal of emphasizing the beauty of the Albanian Riviera while preserving its landscape.
EMPOWERING INCLUSIVITY The elderly make a considerable percentage in the overall population that spends a significant time in Tirana’s public spaces. One of their activities that is overlooked is the time spent playing table games, a key characteristic of Tirana. The aim of this design is to create a product that facilitates this activity or even offers it in certain spaces. The product is a static table which offers the opportunity to play 3 various table games by providing the base for them. One game set-up can “transform” into the next by means of rotating a gear on either side of the tabletop. The TRIPLESIGN table is fixed in front of some existing benches or seats in Tirana’s parks, where it will be sure to attract many elderly users.
LEARNSCAPES
FACING THE RIVER
Learnscapes are designed as open-ended, adaptable outdoor structures, that can be build by local resources and materials through time. A place for innovative school processes, a social space of interaction, enabling physical activity and inspiring kids to interact with its environment. This project proposal is for a public space in Tirana where different age groups meet and interact. The modular structure consists of squares with ropes tied in various densities in order to create different textures. Each surface stimulates a different activity: climbing for kids, a private area for the elderly, horizontal lounges or spaces where people can plant. The smallest scale tends towards specificities (age and activity wise) while the larger model is inclusive and flexible. This project is created during a one week workshop, which was about designing a space for the community for a segment near the Ibar River in Mitrovica, Kosovo. When asked about their landscape and what they would like to change about it, the residents said that they liked it very much and that they only wished for better maintenance so that the riverside would feel more friendly. The project aims to preserve the natural landscape and also integrate several activities in it. This way it preserves what the residents like about the site and also provides them with better infrastructure and options for using it.
OVERBOOKING THE CITY Long time ago the very productive life of Dubrovnik was taking place in safety of the walls. Present identity of Dubrovnik consists of built heritage and visitors seeking for experience.Even the local residents are consumers and not creators. In order for everyone to experience the present Dubrovnik, this project proposal frees up the public space and even expands it to achieve better flow inside the walls. The idea is to create common grounds for all users and introduce the take-away concept inside the walls. Users pick up their food or drink in a walk-in manner and than consume it in the public space – common grounds. Locals, tourists, cruiser ship travellers, rich or poor all share the space and can have the similar experience.
HOME KIT
The main objective of the HOME KIT project is to research, design and build a sustainable house model for slum dwellers and migrant workers. This model will be built at locally affordable costs and will have a modular structure that will allow for easy replicability, and adaptability to a variety of Slum regeneration’ situations. The HOME KIT is also thoroughly bioclimatic; self-sufficient in terms of energy use (NetZero); can be built with locally available materials;allows for self-building by local users; provides satisfactory comfort conditions to its occupants.

Components of the ‘TripleSign’ System
About the TRIPLESIGN Table The elderly of Tirana, which are often overlooked, make up a good percentage of the of population that uses Tirana’s outdoor and urban enviornment. Here, they carry out their momentary table games; an activity that is hardly taken into account when designing public spaces.
A typical “TripleSign” panel board
The TRIPLESIGN Table works with the same mechanism derived and inspired from ‘triplesign’ advertisment billboards (shown below); which allow for three different stills to show at a chosen time. We took this concept and applied it to the table. The three varied stills make up the three assorted gameboards made ready to play for the users.
Assorted Boardgames A single unit of the triangluar strip component of the “TripleSign” board
Materials Used 1) Stone
2) Raw Iron -
used as the skeletal structure that holds the major mass of the table (comming from the stone) above.
3) Glass
used as a covering over the “TripleSign” boardgames to allow for clear visuals but protect against outdoor and atmospheric conditions.
