The Advice Device .Extra-Ordinary Thoughts on Ordinary Things

!
All things start in a way. The starting point of Advice Device was a fictional character. S/He. Exists. Every day s/he does the daily usual. S/He realizes that everything which is born by our imagination comes from the everyday. Tries to “cross it by foot”, but each time (s/he) follows a different route. It’s a practice of dexterity. All objects bounce to their dimensions whenever s/he approaches them. Each of these are raw materials waiting to be processed. S/He seeks to intervene in existing arrangements, to alter everyday situations, to eliminate time, to find unexpectedly volatile ptoints ...

.exploring spaces
Seeing how spaces are, does not mean that we recognise their essential characteristics. Illustrations of common spaces at various times of the day are the main content of the Advice Device. There are 57 spaces classified in 3 categories based on the probability of their existence: 1. “Everyday space as it is” depicts the usual spaces that we inhabit daily. 2. “Everyday space as it could be” illustrates the possible but bizarre combinations of common objects placed in uncommon places. 3. “Everyday space as imagined” consists of 19 spaces inspired by the geometry of impossible objects.

.classifying materials
Based on a (sarcasticly) oversimplified view of daily life, there are only 4 groups of material that someone can work with: Basic - Multifunctional - Smart - Decorative We challenge the user of the Advice Device to change things slightly, as little as s/he wants, to follow our Material Construction/Destruction Rules, to invent new, to “give colour by selecting one of our Colour Manuals and to think with their hands and interact with others, because s/he will be more creative this way. Finallly s/he can laugh, because s/he may not find any deeper meaning, but no one can suggest a mistake. Everything will remain the same, as in never really changes, one way or another.

Bedroom Transcript “Fast-tracked Stories”
This section of the Advice Device consists of 7 pairs of images (one illustration and one “technical” drawing for each space) and it was created in order to indicate and outline the movements of the different protagonists intruding into the everyday architectural “stage set”. Its purpose is to transcribe movements normally overlooked by the user and normally removed from conventional architectural representation, namely the complex relationships between objects and events. As it was inspired by Bernard Tscumi’s “Manhattan Transcripts” (1976-1981), shares the same belief that “Architecture is not simply about space and form, but also about event, action and what happens in space”.

The Advice Device has digital and physical presence. The digital one is as web platform, with a certain domain (advicedevice.org), and is accessible to anyone. The physical one is a prototype box, 34*19*10 cm, in which could be found all the printed material of the Advice Device. In both versions, we sought a variety of alternative practices for the user to try in order to enrich the architectural design of everyday life-space. These practices are based in an ad hoc way of thinking and suggest actions of “rejuvenating the inert intensity of objects and forms, that their daily use has made them absolute and fixed.

The CataL(i/y)st .The archive and the collection as creative tools
Supervisor: N. Kalara 2016
My research thesis focused on 3 different fields, the list, the collection and the archive. The analysis was made both through historical and artistic examples. Initially, the concept of collection was examined under a linguistic and semiological approach, through the analysis of the list form and the search for its value especially within the modern digital world. Then, the multifunctional character of collections was redefined in an anthropological sense. Greater emphasis was placed on their artistic value through the exploration of two different types of collection: the self-writing model of Wunderkammern on one hand and the systematically sorted (museum) collection on the other. The last part of the work investigated the differences between the collection and the archive, while it highlighted the ways in which each artistic filing process functions catalytically in creating future scenarios. Thus, through the research, an attempt was made to re-examine and destroy the “sites of the collection, archive and classification, with the aim of redefining them as fields of self-reflection and creation. Finally, the research thesis was printed as an A5 book accompanied by 4 posters.

.project 3 | Urban installation
In a week, our team designed and constucted a temporary urban village, which in the end took over the space of a stoa (arcade). Each one of the wooden structures represented a historical type of building, that can be found in Thessaloniki, in order to commentate and re-evaluate the idea of a city landmark. At the same time, each structure hosted a new function during the final exhibition. 1. The industrial building = DIY Space 2. The refugee residence = City Window 3. The polikatikia = City Portraits 4. The office building = Creative Ideas The structures by composing a small scale image of Thessaloniki were trying to re-imagine her future one.

.project 4 | Architectural restoration MAJOR DECISIONS 1. The red facade is the trademark of the building, so it was considered necessary to completely preserve and restore it. To further highlight this feature, we recommend removing the existing internal masonry and replacing it with a metal mesh, which is filled with red bricks. 2. In order to perceive the brick shell from the inside and from the inside, we strive to have a vertical continuity with the removal of all the perimeter plates and perimetric movement by creating “bridges” on all floors. The perimeter discharge of the slabs contributes to the better lighting ventilation of the building.

4 | the Red Warehouse 3. The three-part static division of the building served as the occasion for the different treatment of each volume. In the central section all slabs were removed and a more public character prevailed. The ground floor works as a free public passage and makes it easier to access the building from the squares on either side of it. On the other floors there is a structure based on the columns and beams, which hosts the recreational and socialization activities of the employees.

The analysis of this landscape project emerged from recording and gathering traces of natural elements. After our visit to the field we tried to revisit it by memory and through this proccess our design decisions were influenced directly from the ever changing temporality and materiality of the scape.

The overall concept submits itself to natural procedures by considering nature a mechanism that participates in the evolution of a form. By designing specific natural or technical interventions, we enable the accessibility and the exploration of the landscape for all kinds of users.

The Narrow House .Residential conceptual design 2011
.elevation
The biggest challenge of this project was the disproportionate shape of the plot. Thus, the solution was to get the light up to the deepest part of the apartment by positioning the balconies at the back. Furthermore, the natural elements are an essential part of the design, in order to achieve a more pleasant everyday life.

The tree-top hotel .for Sigurd Larsen Architecture & Design
The tree-top hotel is located in a small, quaint forest on the AlsOdde peninsula and consists of nine cabins, that can host up to four sleeping guests and encloses a tree which grows up through the middle. The cabins are located on a small hilltop overlooking a meadow which gives a wonderful view over the top of the forest and lets the sunshine in during the afternoon. The different levels give the impression that you continue to ‘climb’ a tree when going to the mezzanine or roof terrace. While being inside, scenic views of the forest are framed by tall or long panoramic windows. An outdoor bath is located among the green moss and the pine trees, conected with the cabins by a short path.
My responsibility for the project was to create 4 -suitable to the briefillustrations depicting the exterior enviroment as well as the interior atmosphere of the cabins. A variety of software (Rhino, Photoshop, Illustrator) was used for creating the final images.
