George Papanikolaou: Pap Test (Pap Smear) Method for examining with a microscope a sample of superficial cells that line the inner wall of the uterine cervix to detect any abnormal cell for early diagnosis of uterine cancer Developed in 1928 by George Papanikolaou at the Cornell Medical College of New York He also developed the particular polychrome staining reaction Papanikolaou Stain is also used for non-gynecological (clinical) material

In 1995, the Greek government printed a 10.000 drachmae note, bearing the picture of George Papanikolaou on its front side, and god Asklepius, the father of medicine, on back. This note was used prior to the introduction of Euro.
