Childhood and y o u t h i n Poland Maria Skłodowska was born on 7th November 1867 in Warsaw as the fifth and last child in a well-known teaching family, derived from small nobility. .


When Maria was 9 years old, her oldest sister Zofia died of typhus. Two years later, at the age of 42, her mother died, who had been suffering from tuberculosis for years.

Her father was an atheist, and her mother was a deeply believer catholic . After the death of her sister and mother, Maria became depressed, lost her faith in God and became an atheist


Studies at the Sorbonne and Pierre Curie

Maria Skłodowska began her studies at the Sorbonne in November 1891. She chose mathematics and physics as a subject of studies.


Maria shared life and time in Paris between learning and playing in amateur theater. It was during his studies during one of the performances "Poland that crushes the shackles" met and became friends with a seven-yearold pianist - Ignacy Jan Paderewski


Discovery Her achievements include: development of the theory of radioactivity, separation techniques of radioactive isotopes and the discovery of two new elements radium and polonium. Under her personal direction, the first research on cancer treatment using radioactivity was also conducted.


Nobel Prize Twice awarded the Nobel Prize for scientific achievements, for the first time in 1903 in physics with her husband Pierre Curie and Henri Becquerel for research on the phenomenon of radioactivity discovered by Becquerel, for the second time in 1911 in chemistry for the separation of pure radium.


Her achievements include: development of the theory of radioactivity, separation techniques of radioactive isotopes and the discovery of two new elements - radium and polonium. On its initiative, the first research on cancer treatment with radioactivity was also conducted.


She is also the only woman who rested in the Paris Pantheon in recognition of her merits in the field of science

Skłodowska died on 4th July in 9134 in Passy, France
