Celebrating 20 Years of Impact
A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
O
n behalf of the University of Michigan, I offer my congratulations to the Erb Institute on its 20th anniversary, as well as my gratitude to Barbara and Frederick Erb for their visionary leadership. Thanks, also, to the students, faculty and staff whose tremendous efforts have revolutionized how we strive for a more sustainable world. I also congratulate the more than 400 Erb graduates across the nation and around the world who are advancing the institute’s legacy by using
Dear Friends of the ERB INSTITUTE | BUSINESS FOR SUSTAINABILITY n Over the past 20 years within the Erb Institute, the answer to the question of how to achieve transformational change in sustainability has been “by leveraging the power of business.” n Business is creative. And business is nimble. So, in our view, who better to facilitate much-needed change in the name of sustainability? From rethinking their relationship with natural resources and the environment, to changing how they interact with people and communities, companies hold an all-important key to a more sustainable future. And because of their influence on consumers, and because consumers influence them in return, businesses have a crucial role to play in the transformation of entire markets. n For the past 20 years, the Erb Institute has been the place for big and bold thinking at the intersection of business and sustainability. We’ve graduated over 400 students who are

TO THE ERB INSTITUTE COMMUNITY, It is with immense pride and gratitude that I write this letter to congratulate you on your 20th year of sustainable impact. My parents, Fred and Barbara Erb, helped create the institute in 1996 as the country’s first interdisciplinary program in the area of global sustainable enterprise. My mother desired to help create a better world for future generations, and my father said, “If we can raise the next generation of business leaders to think about environmental protection as an essential long-term investment, and not a cost to be avoided, we will have taken a major step forward.” My parents enjoyed meeting with the students, alumni and faculty, and my siblings and I consider the Erbers our extended family. The indelible impression left on my parents was a group of young leaders brimming with passion, commitment and involvement far beyond the typical graduate student. And they were impressed with how this continued beyond graduation, when the students carried these talents and passion into mainstream businesses, startups, nonprofits and consulting. I know that my parents would also be so pleased to see the university’s growing commitment to sustainability with the creation of the Graham Institute, Planet Blue and more. As excited and impressed as they were with the Erb Institute, my parents still had a sense of urgency—sustainability needed to be pursued everywhere. I have no doubt that the Erb Institute has played a critical role in leveraging these changes and will continue to do so for years to come. Best Regards, JOHN M.
