The Building Material Thrift Store (BMTS) will pick up, free of charge, almost any construction related item that can be reused. All donations are tax deductible. A successful diversion program involves “setting expectations early and leading by example.” - David Lloyd, Lloyd Construction

In addition, the BMTS offers deconstruction services, which salvage reusable building materials. This can save money by reducing the amount of waste (measured in tons) charged a tipping fee. On a recent Blaine County home deconstruction project, more than 19 tons were salvaged—18% of the total amount of demolition material in weight. Other ideas include using inert materials for use as fill, such as concrete or burning non-treated wood for heat in a wood burning stove.

Diverting Certain Materials Could Save $ Compared to the $65/ton tipping fee for construction waste that ends up in the landfill (tier 1), material recycling in Hailey is either subject to no tipping fee such as with cardboard and other commodities or a reduced tipping fee, as described in table below.

Find Appropriate Space Recycling and reuse efforts require space. Set aside a convenient area at the jobsite to store reclaimed building materials and house recycling bins for source-separated loads.

Waste Diversion is Important Landfill capacity is reaching its limit locally. Landfills compete with other land uses, such as residential, business, industry, transportation, and recreational uses. It is expensive to transport waste from the Ohio Gulch Transfer Station to the landfill in Burley. Extraction of raw materials for the manufacture of new goods is threatening natural ecosystems around the world.
