OMAN SUSTAINABILITY WEEK

From ambition to action: leadership, commitment and collaboration April 29th and 30th, 2024 - Muscat, Oman

The Middle East is more sensitive to catastrophic weather events than other regions, owing to rising temperatures, extended droughts and greater water scarcity, resulting in expanding social

inequities. Policymakers must develop clear climate regulations, enable access to technology and infrastructure, extend access to sustainable financing, and facilitate access to education to develop skills for delivering on climate action. Also important are corporate activities, driven by science, decarbonised operations and investment in the energy transition. Yet only 12% of the region’s top 200 corporations have net-zero targets, and only 6% have a plan in place to reach them, according to a World Economic Forum report

As a major supplier of energy, the Middle East has the potential to lead the way in implementing renewable solutions, particularly given its solar and wind resources. Because of the considerable contrasts among the GCC countries, regional collaboration is required to speed up decarbonisation and the energy transition. Capturing these opportunities requires redirecting investment and developing technology. How do businesses and governments turn sustainability risks into opportunities?

Join us for The International Sustainability Resources & Technology Conference, organised by Oman Environmental Services Holding Comp (be’ah) and programmed by Economist Impact. The event will connect local and global stakeholders across academia, industry and public sector to foster dialogue and constructive debate, promote the cross-sharing of technical expertise and prepare businesses to meet climate goals. Following COP28, the event will examine how the region can build an equitable and resilient net-zero future and capitalise on new opportunities of economic diversification, better job creation and leadership in sustainable technologies.

The trifecta: green finance, responsible investment and transition

Global investors are increasingly looking to the Middle East to expand their green finance portfolios, driven by the region’s potential in renewables, green infrastructure development and an advancing ESG landscape. Financing mechanisms and policy measures that encourage climate-compatible development are being developed by governments to attract investments and ensure accountability. Despite the interest, the financial sector has not kept pace.

The enabling environment should be adjusted to better align finance with long-term sustainability objectives by creating awareness, supporting climate-and nature-related

The Netherlands Water Partnership (NWP) is an independent, non-governmental foundation, established in 1999 in response to calls for more cooperation and a strong voice for the Dutch water sector in the international market. Since then, encouraging collaboration for the sector at home and abroad has been at the core of NWP’s mission. NWP implements programs that promote cross-sector collaboration and innovation, by building coalitions around themes or regions to increase collective impact, increase the international visibility of the Dutch water sector, and join forces to positively influence policy and contribute to achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals. We do this by, amongst others, organising trade missions, learning weeks, study tours, Netherlands Pavilions at international events, matchmaking, and promoting the Dutch water sector via the international NWP media outlets. As a connecting party, NWP maintains strong relationships with the global water sector and, with its broad network organisation of over 180 members, can connect individuals in the water sector who do not always find each other in their immediate environment.
