Welcome from Ministry of Energy & Minerals On behalf of Ministry of Energy & Minerals, I take pride in welcoming you to the Sultanate of Oman’s national event for sustainability. Oman is committed to the principles of sustainable development and has undertaken a series of innovative programs to achieve economic growth while protecting the country’s environment. Today, sustainable development is not a choice but a prerequisite for development. In line with the goals defined in Oman Vision 2040 to achieve a developed, diversified, and sustainable national economy, there has been an immense concentration on the efficient utilization of technology and optimization of resources to ensure a sustainable approach to increasing consumption and GDP. Oman Sustainability Week reinforce sustainable development as a key feature of governance and highlight its critical role in the diversification of the economy. Aligning itself to the UN Sustainability Development Goals (SDGs) and engaging the national development stakeholders to present Oman as a model for sustainable development, Oman Sustainability Week comprises of an exhibition, conference, thought leadership summit, site visits, and awards. The OSW Awards provides a forum to recognize Omani organisations that are positively contributing towards the sustainable development of the nation. The Oman Sustainability Week Expo showcases an exhibition featuring the latest sustainability technologies, solutions, and initiatives from across the world. The knowledge forums including the International Sustainability Resources and Technology Conference (ISRTC), and the SPE Gaia Summit, connect local and global stakeholders to foster constructive debate, encourage thought exchange and enhance cross-collaboration. The week-long event concludes with OSW Site Visits that offers attendees an opportunity to visit projects that are at the forefront of building a sustainable environment across the country. With PDO, be’ah, Nama Group and OQ acting as Strategy Partners of the event, Oman Sustainability Week further encourages energy independence, revenue generation from non-traditional natural resources, and innovation in infrastructure to produce affordable and clean energy for the protection of the climate and environment. Let us join hands to achieve the country’s sustainability goals of building a circular economy and move towards the global trends of developing a green future!

O F F I C I A L S H O W G U I D E 2022

Welcome from Petroleum Development Oman (PDO) It is an enormous honour to welcome you to Oman Sustainability Week (OSW) on behalf of my company Petroleum Development Oman (PDO), as the main host. This event will highlight how the Sultanate aspires to achieve a new “green economy” in line with the Oman Vision 2040 and the UN Sustainable Development Goals. For many years, this country has relied heavily on oil and gas to generate the wealth to transform it into the peaceful, prosperous and progressive nation it is today. However, faced with mounting climate change realities and the need for economic diversification, Oman must reduce its dependence on fossil fuels to advance and secure its long-term, sustainable future. Oil and gas companies, such as PDO, have a key role to play on this journey and OSW is an ideal platform to showcase some of our landmark sustainability projects. Of course, as we negotiate the Energy Transition from hydrocarbons to renewables, it is essential that we strike the right balance between economic growth and environmental conservation. We must never lose sight of the constant need to engage our communities and to communicate and act openly and honestly to retain their support. That’s why strategic national events like OSW are so critical. They not only help to raise public awareness of what needs to be done but also underline how important it is for all of us to help in making the change. To progress, integration with partners will be essential and this event provides an ideal setting for us to interact with key stakeholders and create new collaborative relationships and cement existing ones, such as the National Hydrogen Alliance. I’m delighted more than 100 companies from over 20 countries are attending to share their examples of best sustainability practice around the five main themes of Clean Water and Sanitisation; Affordable and Clean Energy; Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure; Climate Action; and Life on Land. I wish every visitor an enjoyable, productive and informative time and hope you all gain a real and rewarding insight into how Oman is emerging as a new beacon of sustainability.

Mutrah Souq

About Oman

Mutrah Souq is the traditional market in the Sultanate, historically known as the Souq of Darkness. It is made up of a complex maze of narrow walkways leading to shops that sell local specialties including Omani khanjers, halwa, kummahs, spices, etc.

Oman is the third largest country in the Arabian peninsula. It borders the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in the west, the United Arab Emirates in the northeast, and the Republic of Yemen in the south.

Wahiba Sands

The Wahiba Sands Desert (Sharqiya Sands) is a playground for the adventure lovers in Oman. The desert stretches over 125 miles from the Eastern Hajar Mountains to the Arabian Sea. The region is known for its amber-colored sands and towering sand dunes, making it an ideal spot for dune bashing, camel ride, or even camping. The Royal Opera House Muscat

The Royal Opera House is a very intricate musical venue and a marvel for the eyes. It showcases stunning architecture and rich handmade décor. This masterpiece covered with wood, marble, glass and gold decors with detailed carvings is a mix of tradition and modernity. This is one of the two architectural wonders to visit in Muscat. Ras Al Jinz Turtle Reserve

The Ras Al Jinz Turtle Reserve is a beach offering one of the most beautiful natural experiences in the Sultanate of Oman. Every year, thousands of sea turtles migrate from the shores of the Arabian Gulf and the Red Sea to lay their eggs on Oman’s beaches. Reserves have been set up to protect them, making it a tourist attraction. One can see the turtles at the shore by sunset and leave their nest in the morning. Nizwa Fort

It is situated at the entrance to the Gulf in the middle of the East-West trade routes, ensuring easy access to markets in the Middle East, India, Southeast Asia, Africa and Europe. Its geographical position gives it access to major shipping routes and allows it to serve as a port and commercial centre. Oman is a very hot and humid country with a desert climate, often described as sub-tropical. Rainfall is very low in Oman throughout the year. Summer season: Between May and August. Temperatures could reach up to 40°C. Winter season: Between December and March. Temperatures are between 13°C and 25°C. What to Wear: Light dress is recommended throughout the year, with a lightweight jacket for cooler evenings. Muscat is the heart of the Sultanate, the political and administrative hub of the nation, and the centre of tourism and commercial activities. The capital area is a prime example of intelligent and aesthetic development, blending the modern with the traditional. Modern Muscat is home to a range of luxury hotels with upscale restaurants. Among its attractions are a number of magnifi cent beaches, restored forts, museums and traditional souqs. Oman has consistently ranked first in peace and stability in the Middle East and North Africa andalso ranks high in economic freedom among all the Arab countries.

The Nizwa Fort is a mix of a castle, a fort and a museum. Reflecting the old Omani architecture, the Nizwa Fort is unique due to the circular shape of tower which can be climbed.

THE INTERNATIONAL SUSTAINABILITY RESOURCES & TECHNOLOGY CONFERENCE (ISRTC) Under the Patronage of HH Sayyid Theyazin bin Haitham Al Said Culture, Sports and Youth Minister A Shared Mission With

Rationale The transition to a sustainable society requires the deployment at scale of best available, transformative and innovative integrated technological solutions to (re)direct current economic development towards more sustainable development patterns and to diversify economic sectors that are currently too much dependent on natural resources exploitation. Business as usual is just not an option. All over the world, technological innovations exist - from wastewater treatment, desalination, mining, carbon capture and use, to the use of big data, artificial intelligence, 3D-printing, etc. that allow countries to jumpstart sustainable economic development and become market leaders in the emerging sustainable technology.

HOSTED BY:

ISRTC aims at accelerating the development, dissemination and deployment of technological innovations that enable the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), 17 internationally agreed ambitious goals to move the world onto a more sustainable future by 2030. Currently no one-stop forum exists in the region where policy and decision makers from the private and public sector can come together to learn about market-ready, cutting-edge, technological innovations in different economic sectors and working across sectors, of relevance to the region; and where they can discuss what needs to be done to deploy these integrated technological solutions on the ground at scale and meet the necessary partners to do so. Oman Environmental Service Holding Company S.A.O.C (hereinafter referred to as be’ah) and the Government of Oman will host a conference focusing on technological solutions for the SDGs. The conference aims at significantly contributing to Oman’s and the region’s quest to diversify its economy and to become a market leader in sustainable technology and innovation in line with SDGs.

Purpose of the conference The conference will promote the development of strategic action plans and sustainable technology roadmaps for achieving the SDGs in key economic sectors. It will identify technological solutions in high priority areas. It will bring together policy makers with industrial captains, investors, researchers, … to help the region and countries in the region to benefit from the latest technological developments/innovations when making major investment decisions or deciding on economic diversification strategies and plan. The conference is composed of three, mutually reinforcing pillars. A first pillar deals with waste from a circular economy perspective and will identify practical solutions to improve waste management in the region and beyond. The second pillar will focus on strategic planning as a first step to redirect and diversify the economy. And a third pillar will dive into some economic sectors to further discuss the technological solutions that can help specific economic sectors to become more sustainable and contribute to the achievement of the SDG. O M A N S U S TA I N A B I L I T Y W E E K

Welcome Letter Dear Industry Colleagues, On behalf of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) and the Summit Committee, it gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the 2022 SPE Gaia Summit, our proud participation within the first Oman Sustainability Week. The first SPE Gaia Summit in 2019 was a proof-of-concept event where 55 individuals representing 8 stakeholder groups over two days co-created what has become the SPE Gaia program—an ambitious knowledge building and sharing programming framework empowering and enabling the engineers and scientists of the oil and gas industry to act on humanity’s sustainability challenges with scale and urgency. Enabled by the strengths of the SPE, the Gaia program is brought to life by passionate members around the world who are committed to the oil and gas continuing to play its beneficial role in society whilst embracing new domains of knowledge and practices needed to create a new energy future. Together with a committee of dedicated volunteers, we have built a program where you can come together to discuss and debate Gaia, mother earth. In this safe space, along with experts, practitioners and operations decision-makers, we will discuss energy transition, the circular economy, stakeholder engagement, measuring what matters and natural capital as well as co-creating our own vision for the industry’s role and purpose in society here in the Middle East on the road to COP 28 and in the world. We have designed a highly engaging and unique Gaia approach where you, the participants, can be as active as the speakers and moderators. I look forward to hearing all the creative and ambitious ideas and to us all learning together in confidence. It is the SPE Gaia committee’s pleasure and honor to be hosted in Oman and the GCC. We strongly believe that the oil and gas industry with the GCC can be the vehicle of change. We look forward to your valued participation and hope you enjoy your stay in beautiful Oman. Sincerely, Chokri BenAmor Summit Executive Chair VP Production and Corporate QHSE NESR

The experts and policymakers will share knowledge and discuss the new energy paradigm of decarbonized O&G, energy storage, hydrogen, renewables, and sustainability in the session. We will find pathways optimizing the mix of hydrocarbons and alternative energy sources to enable an inclusive transition towards net-zero emissions. We will share technical knowledge and strategies for new markets, new business models, new systems, new techniques, new technologies, new processes, new mindsets to evolve a supply of energy that supports human activity inside planetary boundaries. Framing questions include but not limited to: • How can we better position ourselves as an industry and region, such that we are ready and comfortable in embracing systemic bottoms-up change in sustainability practices? • Do we know where do we stand and what we are after in terms of reduction of emissions—regionally and locally?

Hefzi, Upstream Environmental Advocacy Lead Saudi Aramco Christiaan Luca, Senior Consultant and Associate Partner Community Wisdom Partners We are operating in an increasingly assertive world and are confronted by a broad variety of stakeholders with often conflicting interests and polarizing opinions. Traditional one-way communication styles, “let us tell you what we plan to do”, are no longer adequate nor sufficient. In the oil and gas industry, indeed all industries, a global, and local, shift in mindset in how we listen and communicate is required to preserve our license to operate and to find our new role in the energy transition. Listening, understanding and willingness to address stakeholder concerns, needs and expectations, thinking ‘outside-in’, are the basis for true engagement. For a company to speak with one voice and engage consistently to the outside world, strong internal alignment and coordination and rigorous planning are required. In addition, we need to play by continuously evolving internationally accepted rules, displaying transparency, inclusiveness and fairness.

will aim to link the three aforementioned pathways of the 9-element Sustainability Programming Strategic Framework to its three priorities, such that it helps “bring the outside in” and meet societal needs, closing the summit. nicely and allowing us to further realize our aspiration of moving the needle during year 2 of Gaia, which is 2022.

Closing Remarks—Way Forward and Acknowledgments 1540–1600 Speaker: Kamel Ben-Naceur, 2022 SPE President Nomadia Energy

Day 2’s visioneering session will come at the end of the summit and position us very well to answer the question of “how we can be additional in achieving change, where change is needed, in a way with which we are able to execute on our sustainability-focused practices”. It will build on the pre-cursor session on Day 1 and incorporate further reflections from what’s been shared in session 3 on ‘Measuring What Matters’ and session 4 on ‘Natural Capital’. Inputs and ideas exchanged throughout the summit and feedback garnered from table discussions will then help produce a way forward for attendees to answer the big question of how we go about achieving change in execution. It will also feed into the content that is shared with all delegates in the aftermath of the SPE Gaia Summit. The focus will revolve around “being additional” by harnessing the strengths of the SPE in collecting, disseminating, and exchanging technical knowledge through pathways of innovation, measuring what matters, and most importantly of all, listening and communication. Coupled with that objective, this visioneering session
