why should weed be legal

Marijuana Today I am going to attempt to inform you guys on the three specific reasons why I think marijuana should be legalized my first is the definition of marijuana and what marijuana is, then I will touch on the harm that it has caused verses the harm alcohol has caused, and last I will discuss the different uses such as recreational and medicinal purposed. First I want to start with what is Marijuana?Marijuana is the most widely spread consumed drug in the United States. Marijuana comes from naturally grown plants named cannabis sativa which comes from the Hemp plant. It contains more than 400 chemicals but the primary ingredient is THC which stands for “tetrahydrocannabinol” for all chemistry students the chemical name is “Delta-9tetrahydrocannabinol” which determines the potency of the marijuana. Marijuana has several different ways you can use it, it can be smoked in several token joints, water pipes or pipes which are called bongs. Also over the past few years the younger people have brought cigars into popularity also known as “blunts”. This was widely used by college students trying to disguise their left handed cigarette as a mere cigar. Marijuana is also used to make tea which research shows it is less potent when brewed, and last marijuana is used to mix into foods such a rice crispy treats or the notorious marijuana brownies. Some common names for marijuana are: “pot, chronic, bammer, reefer, ganja, blunt, weeds, and the last one I haven’t heard yet is gold stamp”. With over 200 slang terms these are just a few. According to, “A healthy me. Com “research shows marijuana has been around throughout human history. Reports cite its use in Chinese medicine as early as 2727 B.C. It became prominent in the United States in the 1960’s according to the (NIDA) the national institute on Drug Abuse over 25 million people ask “does it have side effects?” and the answer to that question is yes it does it has several side effects, some being relaxation, dry mouth and throat, increased heart rate, cravings for sweets which is referred to as the “munchies”. These are just a few of the short term side effects. There are

also long term effects also. These are the reduction in male and female hormones, loss of motivation which is clinically referred to as “Amotivational syndrome”, short term memory loss; these are just a few of the long term side effects. As we speak they are researching higher doses of THC used in lab animals to give us further research.

My second topic will be the harm marijuana has on people vs. the harm alcohol has on people. First does marijuana contributes to overdose? “No”. Does it contribute to assaults? “No” Does it contribute to violent crimes?”No” Last does it contribute to domestic violence? Once again the research say no. marijuana is far less toxic and less addictive than alcohol. From the US Centers for Disease Control (cdc) in 2001 there were 331 alcohol overdose deaths and zero marijuana overdose deaths. There are hundreds of alcohol overdose deaths each year, the consumption of alcohol is also the direct cause of tens of thousands of deaths each year in the United States, And on the other hand marijuana has yet to have and overdoes added to the history book. Alcohol is one of the most toxic drugs used in America, and with just a few too many drinks a good time could turn fatal. As for marijuana it is the least toxic drug, you could smoke all day and still wouldn’t be fatal, but alcohol is legal and marijuana is not? There are about three million violent crimes that occur each year in which the victims perceived the offender to have been drinking at the time of offense. Also alcohol use contributes to the likelihood of domestic violence and sexual assault and marijuana does not. Marijuana does not have the immediate dramatic effects on health that detour many Americans from trying drugs like crack and heroin.

Alcohol use is high in cases of sexual assault and date rape on college campuses, where as marijuana use is not considered a contributing factor in cases involving sexual assault and date rape. The Harvard school of public health study found that 72% of college rapes occurred when the females were too intoxicated by alcohol to resist and or consent to (source from Harvard.edu)” with this being said alcohol is way more lethal than marijuana. My final topic that I will cover will be how I believe marijuana needs to be legalized for medical and recreational purposes and I will give you a few facts for both of my assumptions. In 1976 the Netherlands decriminalized possession of soft drugs such as marijuana. To cater to demand, outlets began to quickly crop up in around the country specifically in the capital Amsterdam. In Amsterdam it is a common knowledge around the world that when you visit Amsterdam you can just walk into a coffee shop and order what you want in regards to marijuana. You walk into a coffee shop where they may hand you a menu with today’s marijuana special or even the marijuana of the day. As I researched Amsterdam, the recreational use of marijuana would not stimulate crime like some would argue. The crime rate in Amsterdam is lower than many major US cities, For example Mario Lap a key drug policy advisor in the Netherlands national government says “we’ve had a realistic drug policy for 30 years in “Netherlands, and we know what works, “by distinguishing between soft and hard drugs between traffickers and users. We’ve tried not to make people feel like criminals” (from the Houston Chronicles) In 1989 the Lancet report states “The Dutch have shown that there is nothing inevitable about the drug ladder in which soft drugs lead to hard drugs. This ladder does not exist in Holland because the dealers have been separated .With all that being said I would like to jump to medical marijuana. Now please take a second and think about how medical marijuana can help in so many ways. For thousands of years, all

over the world people have used marijuana to treat a number of medical conditions. Today in the United States medical marijuana is prohibited. Although 36 states have passed legislation to allow marijuana’s use as a medicine, federal law preempts to patients. A number of studies showed that marijuana has been found to have potential to ease glaucoma, multiple sclerosis, and AIDS- related chronic pain. Marijuana can also help patients undergoing chemotherapy who are suffering from loss of appetite it contains a synthetic form of THC, which is approved for increasing and appetite in AIDS patients and also for nausea relief in chemotherapy patients. Animal studies also suggest that marijuana may help in treating epilepsy and slowing the progression of Alzheimer’s disease, and according to the drug enforcement administrative law judge, Francis L. Young is that marijuana is “one of the safest therapeutically active substances known to man”, and its recommended that the drug be made legally a valuable for some medical purposes, including treatment of cancer patients. In conclusion I feel like marijuana is an herb that can be smoked or even baked into foods. Marijuana has been used for health reasons for thousands of years. Threw many researches it has been found that a number of people really benefit from this herb called marijuana. Whether it is recreational or medical, marijuana is far safer that alcohol. Nearly all medicines have toxic, potentially lethal effects, while marijuana is not such a substance. There is no record in the extensive medical literature describing a proven, documented cannabis-induced fatality-. I came up with a number of reasons why marijuana needs to be legalized and I gave you several of those reasons. Yes there is so much more we have to do to get marijuana legalized but this is just the beginning. Thank u

Marijuana is one of the few safe therapeutic active substances that have ever been studied.
