About ERGT Australia
Personal commitment to industry
The story so far
ERGT Australia is committed to helping improve safety performance in high-risk industries - especially the Oil & Gas industry.
ERGT Australia is a leading commercial training organisation providing emergency response and safety-critical training to high risk industries. ERGT provides a professional, engaging and safe training service using simulated environments to develop skills and behaviours that address safety-critical industry needs.
We use our skills as a Registered Training Organisation to ensure compliance with competency standards, but our commitment to safety requires more than just compliance. We are committed to understanding industry’s needs and are driven to go beyond the national competency standards to ensure that we develop the right safety behaviours and critical skills in our customers. We also work on the transference of those skills into performance in the workplace, which is ultimately the point of all training. Our commitment is not a new thing. We have been working for the Australian Oil & Gas industry since 1994. We have recently made another 35 year commitment with our new $18 million Oil & Gas Safety Training Centre at Jandakot, due to open mid-2012. But our greatest commitment comes through the very personal obligation that we all feel – from me as Managing Director through to our newest trainers – to lead by example in our own approach to safety. Every one of us learns more every day about how we can think and act more safely and how this in turn helps our customers. We look forward to an opportunity to help you and your organisation in your drive to improve safety performance.
Since 1994 ERGT has built a solid reputation in providing safety training for the oil and gas industry through our people, processes, products and attention to detail. With seven major training centres located in Perth and Victoria, ERGT is well positioned to develop it’s core business (safety training?) While expanding its operations into other key oil and gas sectors. ERGT currently delivers over 15,000 training days per year and is supported by over 200 staff. ERGT believes that for continued success the company must perform at the highest possible level. Therefore ERGT has invested over $18 million in a new oil & gas training facility located in Jandakot that will be the largest of its kind in the southern hemisphere. ERGT plans to capitalise on its Victorian presence to expand operations to further service the east coast of Australia. At the end of the day ERGT believes that a safe workplace is vital to improving workplace safety performance.

Our People Glenn Iles
Mike Collister
Director of Perth Incident Management Training Centre
HSE Advisor
I have been at ERGT’s Jandakot Training centre since 1995 and I have now expanded into our ERGT Perth office. I have been greatly rewarded over the last couple of years to work with a team of like minded people who enjoy training people to be safe in high risk industries. The team’s most recent achievement has been building ERGT’s Crisis/Incident Management product and services. I can only see many more exciting opportunities coming up for ERGT, our ability to be innovative and engaging is made easier when working with companies that are passionate about the Safety of their employees.
My job is to keep our team and trainees safe. We have great systems, procedures, training and a highly skilled group of people at ERGT. My main focus is to foster our safety culture, without this everything else is a battle. I also ask our team to remind themselves of their own reasons for being safe which is why we all have a picture of our loved ones in our personal Safety Books.
Steve Jeffrey
Andrew Sorenson
Senior Trainer
Trainer Development Manager
As a trainer across several courses, I have been given the opportunity to train within ERGT’s multiple sites and travelling to wherever ERGT’s clients’ need us to be. Taking students from one level of knowledge to the next is very fulfilling. I have been involved with the company for over 12 years. I have watched the company grow from four classrooms to the current 14 and eagerly await the opening of the new premises where we will have 30 classrooms.
I joined ERGT in 2009 as a practical training officer and quickly moved on to becoming a full time trainer. In 2010, I was given the opportunity to take on a Lead Trainer role which was both challenging and rewarding at the same time. In 2011 I was given another opportunity; this time as Trainer Development Manager for multiple sites in Victoria. In the first three years with ERGT I feel I have been given great opportunities to grow both professionally and personally and with the support of the entire team, I have been able to make the most of those opportunities and have progressed further than I could have hoped.
Paul Skuse Head of Training Operations
Mary Maddever
Our training teams are from diverse backgrounds and we are a committed group of people who have passion for assisting people to be safer. Each trainer undergoes a robust development program to ensure training at ERGT is safe, enjoyable and meets industry requirements. I am very proud of my team’s trainee support, safe culture, flexibility and teamwork.
Customer Service Team Leader I have been at ERGT for 5 years and I can still say I still thrive on giving the best service possible whether it is making clients critical last minute courses happen or ensuring a new starter to the industry gets the as much information necessary to help kick start their career. Working in the Customer Service Team for a company that understands how important it is to stay flexible in such a fast paced industry makes everyday an exciting challenge.
Chris Busing and Decytha Sugianto Curriculum Team Leader and Curriculum Development Specialist The most important element to an effective continuous improvement process is our ability to work as a team within the larger ERGT team. We work collaboratively with other staff members to continually review and update course materials. Development of quality delivery, assessment procedures and documentation ensures our trainees receive the best outcome possible.

I have always enjoyed helping others learn and develop, so after spending over 10 years training and coaching technical skills for high risk work places, I have found that facilitating learning is a far more powerful strategy for long term personal development. Although our industry has an enviable safety record, we have reached a plateau and I believe that Safety Leadership Development is the next frontier for safety training. Recently, I have enjoyed the role of developing the CSTP and SSCP courses but feel that we have just scratched the surface of what can be achieved in helping our industry reach our goal of no more injuries.

CSTP
Common Safety Training Program
Course Streams
Common Safety Training Program (CSTP) is an industry initiative administered by APPEA. This initiative has recently become an industry mandate, as is the requirement for TBOSIET/BOSIET. As of the 1st of January 2012, Australia’s oil and gas industry has adopted CSTP as a core foundation of safety skills in the workplace. The aim is to ensure all personnel working in the oil and gas industry in Australia to have been assessed as competent against defined core safety units. The CSTP program covers basic theory and exercises conducted over a 3 day period.
There are two pathways available to obtain a CSTP card:
The topics covered are: • Safety Case and Safety Management Systems
1. Training for new employees 2. Training for experienced workers Experienced workers can obtain a CSTP card through an RPL process i.e. Without attending training. Our 1 day training program is designed for those who don’t have the resources to complete RPL themselves.

Corporate Incident Management Systems - Exercises Exercises: The importance of organisation’s practicing their Corporate Incident Management plan cannot be overstated. Personnel are able to consolidate their understanding of the plan, identify deficiencies and recommend solutions to further enhance the response to personnel directly affected by the event. Practicing the Incident Management Plan is principally to ensure that it has the best and most effective procedures in place if an incident were to occur. The team must also take care of the organisation’s reputation and ongoing organisational sustainability; whether it is how they handle the media, the relatives, the environmental issues or the incident itself. Experiential training builds trust and recognition between all participants from the site of the incident to the incident teams, external agencies, Regulators and Government Departments. It is a rehearsal for the ‘real thing’. Incident training should involve multi-level participation, ensuring that incident management team members partake in problem solving exercises and become familiar with their roles in a structured learning environment. The training will simulate a range of probable major accident events or high potential incidents.
