L A Y C Clay 54 is a magazine that was made by Eric Avila for the Digital Media For Designers 1 class at Purchase College. The assignment was to choose an object that represents you and create 54 portraits of that object using illustrator and Photoshop. The portraits are in the style of 3 graphic styles, chosen at random, and combinations of these styles. After making the 54 portraits we were to choose 9 of our best portraits and make a 2’x3’ poster combining these portraits. This is the process book that shows every portrait and each draft of the final poster.

G o th Goth is a term that can refer to many things. It can refer to Gothic architecture from the 12th and 13th century, or writings from the 18th and 19th century that were grotesque in subject matter, or refer to the 20th century subculture inspired by rock from the 60’s. Gothic architecture was defined by its pointed arches and stain glass windows and flying buttresses on the church buildings. The goth subculture is known for its constant theme of black. So, when I made portraits for the goth style I focused on the aesthetic of black and white photography and making the clay look dark and lonely. I also wanted to focus on this idea of sculpt the clay into a pointed arch and to create the shapes of a stain glass window.

2 Rococo Rococo was an art movement that started in France in the 18 th century in response to baroque. Paintings from this movement was more playful, and used a pastel color palette unlike Baroque art. In terms of interior design it focused on floral patterns and ornamentation. I focused on these aspects and found ways to make ornaments with the clay still stuck inside the plastic bag used to keep it moist and malleable.

90’s/DavidCarson
David Carson is the creator of a style that came to be known as grundge typography known for the use of broken type and its expressive type treatment. Carson did not go to college for design, but felt the needto pursue it and was appointed art director of Raygun magazine. It was dedicated to rock and alternative music and when he designed the covers he wan ted to reflect how the music made him feel. He is known as the anti-thesis to Massimo Vignelli and believes that legibility does not always communicate. So he tries to push the limits of legibility and claims his style cannot be imitated because its his own and is very situational. He does not design on a grid and the type is all over the place and “dirty. Carson sometimes uses his own photography and take pictures from weird angle s and trusts the viewer to figure out what the object is or what the type is saying. Keeping this in mind, I decided to take pictures of the clay, interpet the clay and set the type to compliment the state the clay was in.

Goth & Ca rso n
Merging Goth and Carson’s ideas was pretty simple. By taking pictures of the clay from different angles and using gothic type and trying to blur the lines of communcation. For two of them i used the typeface Bauhaus 23 and to aspects from the band’s image and use of black and white photography.

Goth, Rococo, Carson
The last set of portraits are a combination of Goth, Carson, and Rococo. Here there are instances where the one style dominates the other, but i wanted each one to look like a possible cover for an experimental type magazine about clay.

Poster V1
Heres the first draft of the poster comprised of 9 of my best portraits. I looked at all my portraits thoroughly and multiple covers that Carson designed for Raygun. I wanted to focus on the ornamentation and floral pattern of my Rococo portraits. The clay is the center piece and layer in photos-hoped and there is play with different layer effects in Photoshop. It was to disjointed so i decided to continue to refine it.

Final Poster
Here’s the final poster and here the title is copy and pasted twice and put on top of the original title to create blurring of the title. The blur of the title is meant to compliment the texture in the background. The clay is mirror to create this ornament and be one the focuses of the poster. The clay bits are behind the wrapped up bags and the type is set to reflect the orientation of the clay .
