Ethos

Me

Ethos: the characteristic spirit of a person, culture, era, or community as manifested in its beliefs and aspirations

As a designer and project manager my focus has been to bring positive impacts to the collective community in which we all reside. The projects that have shaped my career are diverse but have a central tenant of positivity for the greater good. My aim will always be to continue in that pursuit.

I am an urban planner, urban designer and landscape designer. I received a BA in Political Science and Sociology from The New School and a Master’s in Urban Planning and Master’s in Landscape Architecture at the University of Washington in 2014. My passion is community focused design and site planning. She is a current member of the Seattle Design Commission and runs the artist group Boomslang Creatives.

Seattle Public Utilities Shape our Water

— Makers

As the project manager for the consultant team I led a large engagement and priority planning effort around future infrastructure investments of Seattle Public Utilities. Shape Our Water is a 50-year plan for Seattle’s water resilience. It is anchored by a community vision to guide drainage and wastewater investments that will help transform Seattle. This multi- year, multi-million dollar planning effort was aimed at guiding and facilitating Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) approach to learning about Seattle communities’ values and goals for long-term resiliency, racial and environmental justice, and personal and community well-being. The outcome of this planning effort will guide SPUs long-term investments in drainage and wastewater infrastructure, policies, and programs.

Public Art — Boomslang Creatives

As the project manager for the creative firm Boomslang Creatives I have overseen the design and implementation of dozens of public art installations. These range in scale and complexity but have all been accessible and enjoyed by the general public. The focus of this work has always been to bring joy to people across the urban landscape in addition to drawing attention to key topics or areas of interest.

Delridge Triangle Community Vision

— Makers

The Delridge Triangle is a project located at the juncture of South Delridge and White Center. The area is one of the most diverse in Seattle with a very large and young Latino population. The area also lacks access to appropriate green space and has no central gathering space for the community to connect with and celebrate their cultural heritage. My role in this project was as project manager to oversee the redesign of an under-utilized right of way into a space that would create a healthier environment for this community, as well as provide them a location that could be the future home of celebrations and gatherings. A key portion of the site was also dedicated to food production which was identified as a desired feature by the community during outreach. My experience working with this project, and with the community members I interacted with makes this position with Department of Neighborhoods even more enticing.

Outdoor Gathering Space West Seattle —

Our project site is located in a neighborhood which is highly residential and isolated from other walkable commercial districts. This means the community doesn’t have a central gathering space to call their own or other safe walkable amenities to take advantage of. Highland Park Corner Store is located in what has previously been a food desert and an area burdened by car dependency.

2'-6" 18'-6"

During the height of COVID Community Collective worked alongside a local small business owner to pursue a grant to fund an outdoor gathering space in the Highland Park neighborhood of Seattle. This outdoor space will provide an ongoing safe means of gathering in a part of Seattle that lacks walable resources or a space to come together and foster a stronger sense of belonging with their fellow neighbors.

Tacoma Housing Authority Design The Hill

Mithun In collaboration with Tacoma Housing Authority (THA), and Fab-5 Erica developed the #DesignTheHill outreach process to inform this framework plan. Design The Hill invited youth, neighbors, and elders with roots in thE Hilltop community to shape the development of 237 new affordable housing units and new community, commercial, and retail spaces across four Tacoma Housing Authority properties near the Martin Luther King Jr. (MLK) Way retail corridor. Due to the history of inequity, systemic disinvestment, and marginalization they have experienced many Hilltop residents distrust development and government agencies. To address this distrust and build a better relationship with the community that initiated #DesignTheHill. #DesignTheHill was a process that created a community focused environment for Hilltop residents to share their needs, their history, their hardships, and the weight of what they’ve lost to displacement. During this process, they also shared their immense will and desire to build a more equitable neighborhood. Every person that took part in #DesignTheHill left their mark, and their contributions are indispensable to its success.

“Low Income Housing Institute (LIHI) is one of the largest providers of tiny house village shelters in the nation, ensuring that people’s experience in homelessness is as safe, dignified, and brief as possible. Tiny houses offer tremendous benefits over tents – they are safe, weatherproof, and lockable – and the communities that we help build allow residents to reclaim their dignity and get on a path to housing in a supportive village environment.” (source: www.lihi.org) Central Collective was hired to develop the site plan, landscape plan, permit plans and construction documentation of 2 tiny houses villages during 2020: Tacoma Village: 40 tiny houses Skyway Village: 34 tiny houses

Independent The Justice Bus was a project created for the Benefit Law Center which is a non-profit aimed at bringing social security and other social services to the homeless at other at risk populations in King County. The Concept was to transform an old Metro Bus into a mobile legal clinic which could travel around King County and provide free legal services to a greater number of people in need. The project was completed in the fall of 2019. Additional information about the project can be seen here as covered in a King 5 story, While Covi has made this service challenging The Justice Bus has enabled BLC to vastly expand their services beyond the confines of a central Seattle to many locations across the county.

McGraw Square — Downtown Seattle Association McGraw Square was identified through public engagement as a priority public space for improvement efforts in 2017 by the Downtown Seattle Association (DSA). While the space has been improved from its original state of a roadway it was clear that it could benefit the surrounding community to a much greater extent. In addition, the DSA had received notification that surrounding development agencies were interested in investing in the site given some understanding of possibilities. At that point I worked to create a series of renders of how art and added amenities could benefit the space and make it more user friendly. These images were used to get a final buy in from neighbors regarding their investment. Following that commitment, I was able to move forward with contracting an architecture firm, to assist with construction documents and sourcing the right contractors, fabricators, and engineers to oversee the final construction set for Seattle Department Of Transportation (SDOT) review (team shown to the right reviewing metal fabrication). Given that this site is owned by both the Parks Department and SDOT and has a trolley line that terminates within it, developing a management agreement was a complex process, but well worth it in the end.
