PRESENTED BY
This competition promotes the study and awareness of various design disciplines in high schools across Canada.

It is open to all high school students, at the junior (grades 10 and below) and senior (grades 11 +12) levels. Prizes will be awarded in five categories:

COSTUME FASHION GRAPHIC DUSTRIAL ITECTURE INTERIOR
ENTRY GUIDELINES Students can work individually or in teams. There is no maximum number of students permitted for a group submission. Students may submit more than one entry as long as they are in separate categories. Entries will not be returned and will become property of Design Exchange. Students are encouraged to submit quality copies of their work and keep the originals. Students may also wish to photograph their completed boards for their portfolio. DUE TO THE HIGH VOLUME OF ENTRIES, DESIGN EXCHANGE IS UNABLE TO CONFIRM SUBMISSIONS HAVE BEEN RECEIVED. Please track your package if you are concerned about its safe arrival at Design Exchange.
All entries must be postmarked no later than Monday, April 17, 2017
HOW TO SUBMIT 1 All entries should be firmly mounted on card, bristol board, or foamcore. All relevant information (written, imagery, etc.) should be placed on front of boards for display purposes. Boards must be no larger than 11” x 17” and can be laid out vertically or horizontally. Entries may include a maximum of three boards. Do not send models; photographs of models may be included on the boards.
2 All student’s names, school, category, and grade level should appear on the back of each board. This information must match the completed Student Registration Form.
3 Full entries should be bundled together (tied, wrapped, or placed in an envelope) separate from other student entries.
JUDGING + PRIZES All entries will be judged in May 2017 by a panel of professional designers and Sears Canada product managers. If the entries do not meet the requirements, the panel reserves the right not to award a winner for that category. Entries that do not arrive prior to the jury session will not be considered. All decisions made by the panel are final. All winning and honourable mention entries will receive certificates. First, second, and third place winners in each category, at each level, will receive cash prizes as follows:

COSTUME DESIGN
Whether it is meant for the stage or for the everyday, students are asked to design a look for their favourite character from Shakespeare’s Hamlet. The design may be entirely original, created from found pieces or a combination of the two. Consider what era this look may be found, location, tone, and style. The design should be a head to toe look! Submissions of actual garments or accessories are not permitted. Please use photographs if desired.

FASHION DESIGN
The backpack is an everyday staple for students to carry around everything they need in a day. From textbooks and lunches to school projects and gym clothes! Students are asked to reimagine what they feel is the perfect school bag to help them throughout the week. Consider ergonomics, weather, textile choices, function, and more. Submissions of actual models are not permitted. Please use photographs if desired.

GRAPHIC DESIGN
With Canada celebrating its 150th anniversary in 2017, students are challenged to develop a celebratory stamp to represent Canada’s big milestone. Taking into consideration the size, how will your design translate from large scale planning to an actual stamp. What graphics, colours, and imagery best represent Canada?

INDUSTRIAL DESIGN
Students often don’t have access to a car or easy means of transportation to get them around on a daily basis. Students are asked to reimagine an easier method for them to get around. Is it a type of collapsible bike, a modified skateboard, deconstructed rollerblades? The mobile device should be able to run on various street surfaces, accomodate one person, and should be adaptable in some manner to allow for easier storage while in class or not in use.

ARCHITECTURE + INTERIOR DESIGN Students will design a small city dwelling with a footprint (base) no larger than 500 square feet. Design must include an exterior rendering of the outside of the dwelling as welll as the interior floor plan layout for all floors. The dwelling must not exceed three stories. Consider size, city location, building materials, and benefits of the design. Submissions of actual models are not permitted. Please use photographs if desired.

GEORGE J. KLEIN MEDAL The National Research Council of Canada (NRC) will award the George J. Klein Medal to the overall winning entry of this competition that stands above all others in its creativity, originality, and execution. The medal honours a NRC research and design engineer who is often cited as the most productive inventor in Canada in the 20th Century. Dr. Klein (1904-1992), who also served as an adjunct professor at Carleton University, invented a microsurgical staple gun, industrial gearing systems, and aerospace technologies for the Gemini and Apollo space programs.
PLUS! In 2017, we are thrilled to announce the Design Exchange Scholarship. The winner of the George J. Klein Medal will also receive a $3000 scholarship to be used toward their design education.

To be considered by the jury, all student registration forms and entries must be submitted before April 17, 2017.
Jury Session A jury of design professionals and Sears Canada product designers will judge entries.
Winner’s Contacted Winners for each category will be emailed. Due to the high volume of entries, Design Exchange is unable to contact entrants who have not won.
