TEXAS HEARING INSTITUTE SIZE: 40,000 SF BUDGET: $13 M DELIVERY METHOD: CM at Risk PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The Texas Hearing Institute is a mixed-use daycare school for infants and toddlers with substantial hearing loss. The other portion of the building is an audiology / speech pathology and therapy clinic for assessing the children’s hearing and speech development.

MY INVOLVEMENT: I acted as a project designer supporting the project architect and principal interior designer. I participated in the initial programming sessions using program “pieces”, SD, DD and Construction Documents delivered to permitting.

The project required careful coordination of architectural design with a Sound consultant to install sensitive, acoustically isolated sound booths. An additional project ran simultaneously to accommodate the school’s operations while the building was being constructed

DXP Enterprises SIZE: 44,000 SF BUDGET: $5M DELIVIERY METHOD: DBB PROJECT DESCRIPTION: DXP Enterprises is a publicly traded industrial supply chain company headquartered in Houston, TX. Management acquired a building where they aspired to consolidate several business divisions under one roof, and communicate a strong branded vision and corporate identity. MY INVOLVEMENT: On this project I acted as project designer. With the guidance of both Project Architect and Lead Interior Designer, I developed design presentations, selected the project finishes and specifications and developed the project documents from SD through CD. The project features a new feature staircase and planter-box, atrium finish refresh, and custom 34’ tall hanging sculpture to make a powerful, eye catching statement. Creating the sculpture was a collaborative design project with Rootlab, a Houston-based digital fabrication company I also took a central role, alongside the Project Architect in Construction Administration duties, including punch-list and project close-out.

A MA MANIERE SIZE: 2,100 SF BUDGET: UNKNOWN DELIVERY METHOD: DESIGN - BUILD PROJECT DESCRIPTION: A Ma Maniere is an Atlanta-based, streetwear and lifestyle goods brand wth locations in Washington D.C. Houston and other large cities. Their brand ethos revolves around the popular internet acronym “IYKYK” (If you know you know); a phrase meaning that the quality or value of something escapes the notice of the general public but those with insider knowledge or a keen eye can spot the true effort, value and quality to the goods and brands A Ma Maniere represents. Our design team was contracted to design a small retail space in a new mixed-use development to fit the retail component, a full working restaurant kitchen concept and restroom all while not compromising the merchandising needs of the retail store. This required adding a mezzanine level, acheivable due to overly tall ground floor space. MY INVOLVEMENT: I acted as a project designer, assisting two interior designers. I played a central role in developing the design concept for the store, coordinating closely with the client’s head brand creative. The project features all custom product displays and several built-in merchandising features.

CRAWFORD LAW SIZE: 5,000 SF BUDGET: $400 K DELIVERY METHOD: OWNER GC PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Clay Crawford is the owner of a small law practice and a historic building built in 1884, making it easily among the oldest standing structures in Houston. Freeway development and poor drainage has caused repeated flooding of the building. Furthermore, Hurricane Harvey, in 2017, brought nearly 36 inches of water into the building. Our design team initially proposed moving the law firm to the second story and proposed an extension over the parking lot, keeping the historic stylings of the original buildng. Due to budget and schedule, the final project consisted of building a new raised floor level on the ground floor, 34 inches above the original, incorporating a new and more resilient elevator and making accessibility improvements. With no way to guarantee that a 150 year old building would not flood, the new crawl space and resilient finishes will allow water to infiltrate is nececssary and provide easy access to clean up and get back to business. The project has been nominated for a Houston Business Journal Landmark Award for its preservation efforts. MY INVOLVEMENT: I acted as a project designer, assisting the principal architect. I worked on this project through every iteration of SD, DD, CD’s and saw the project through CA. The project required a large amount of onsite coordination with the sub-contractors due to the non-standard and remedial renovations that had previously been made to the structure.
