of education as a paraprofessional in the Title I program. She soon was seen driving a big new car. And she became a candidate for the board of education election that was coming up. The critics and naysayers all seemed to gravitate around her. At one board of education meeting, she got embroiled in an argument with Mr. Adams and one thing led to another until their confrontation became physical. Before anyone could stop him, Mr. Adams, who was the only white person on the board, had grabbed Ms. Buchanan’s wrist. Well, we were able to calm Mr. Adams, but this confrontation became the cause celebre for Ms. Buchanan as the news spread.

As time for the election grew closer and the air of attacks grew more vicious, the board of education wanted to protect me by extending my contract beyond the current contract. Knowing that the attacks from the Wallace camp would not dissipate, I was actually ready to leave the state. Since I had told nobody about these events or my thinking, we agreed to let the election decide the issue.
