SIMPSON HOUSING SERVICES 2009 Annual Report

dear friends,
A
friend of Simpson has written a children’s book that will soon be published. He is contributing the first $10,000 of profit to sustain our work with people experiencing homelessness. Another supporter asked friends and colleagues to sponsor her run in a marathon, donating all funds to our cause. These gifts, in addition to the countless others made by individuals, faith communities, corporations, and foundations, make an impact.
D
an Poorman, 2009 President of the Simpson Board of Directors and Executive Director Julie Manworren with the 2009 Minnesota Nonprofit Award for Excellence in a Large Organization. In qualifying for the award, Simpson demonstrated an alignment with MCN’s Principles and Practices for Nonprofit Excellence, in the role that a nonprofit plays in society, in governance, planning, transparency and accountability.
The Bright Horizon Childcare and Walman Optical staff joined to re-create four spaces that are used by children and youth in our family housing programs. Dedicated volunteers stay overnight at the shelter and hundreds of groups come to cook in the kitchen, adding warmth and liveliness to the evening meal. These volunteers contributed to the total of 32,000 hours of time given in 2009. Every hour makes an impact. Every contribution nourishes the lives of families and individuals in our programs. We are changing lives and bettering our community in partnership with one another. Please take a moment to review the positive impact of your participation. Together we are creating the history of Simpson Housing Services. Thank you for adding your unique and meaningful contributions. We welcome your visit or phone call.
Our mission is to house, support and advocate for people experiencing homelessness.

Julie Manworren | Executive Director
1982 Simpson UMC opens doors of the church basement to increasing number of homeless people in the community. 1984 Rise in the
number of people seeking shelter prompts the formation of the Transitional Housing program.
1984 Simpson hosts the first Homeless Memorial March and Service.
1990 Funding from HUD focuses the transitional housing efforts on homeless families. 1993 Simpson
incorporates as a 501(c) (3) non-profit.
1994 Kids-First program begins working with the families in our Transitional Housing Program. 1999 The first Education Support Advocate is hired to assist children in succeeding in school, helping to break the cycle of homelessness.
l to r. Simpson Celebrates Community You Are Remarkable Award recipient Yvonne and Housing Specialist Breanne McNeil.
W
omen’s Housing Partnership staff member Breanne McNeil describes Yvonne as: “A very strong, kind-hearted, loving, and smart woman.” Yvonne is a former shelter guest and one of the first participants in the Women’s Housing Partnership. She has been housed for a year and a half in the same apartment. Even while she was experiencing homelessness and staying at the women’s shelter, she held down her job in food service at the metrodome. Yvonne is attending Minneapolis Community and Technical College where she will soon graduate. She has reconnected and has grown closer to her three children and her grandchildren, who she now happily sees on a regular, ongoing basis. Housing Specialist Breanne adds: “This woman has endured many hard times and has taken the good out of these hardships and created a better life for herself.”
1999 Simpson opens a separate shelter for women. 1999 Simpson volunteers provide meals at the shelters 365 days out of the year, staff the men’s shelter overnight, tutor kids in the Family Housing program.
1999 Shelter opens during the day to meet the needs of third shift workers. Demand decreases within a year and the day shelter is closed. 2000 Transitional Housing grows from helping 26 to 40 families.

The Simpson Rapid Exit program
The Simpson Rapid Exit program is dedicated to swiftly moving guests from the shelters into housing. Clients tend to have been homeless for a shorter amount of time and have fewer barriers to housing.
• •
75 clients were housed in 2009. Clients in the program had an average monthly income of $1,065.
2001 The Simpson savings program provides shelter guests the opportunity to save a portion of their income to help get into housing.
2002 The Rental Assistance program is added to assist families from our Transitional Housing program.
2001 Soar program for kids intensifies work with families.
Rental Assistance (SARA) program begins working with long-term homeless men and women. Thirty adults are housed.

2006 Through the Family Roots Alliance, with Lutheran Social Services, we are serving an additional 42 longterm homeless families. 2006 Simpson is contracted to provide support services at the ZOOM House apartments in south Minneapolis.
S
helter advocate Robert Hoffman, left, and former shelter guest Sam. Sam had stayed at the Simpson Men’s Shelter for a night here and there over the last few years, but “won” a 28-day bed in February of 2009. “When you don’t have to worry about where you’re going to sleep, eat, and shower each night, it allows you to focus on some other things. Knowing where you’re going to sleep each night gives you some peace of mind. It makes you feel like you belong somewhere,” he said. Robert worked with Sam to help him overcome his barriers to maintaining housing. Sam is currently working and is in his own home.
2006 The Simpson Celebrates Community awards are established to recognize outstanding Simpson program participants, volunteers and community partners.

family housing I
n 2009, we continued our work with families whose long periods of homelessness and precarious housing stem from challenges such as institutional racism, generational poverty, family violence, mental illness, and chemical dependency. We saw an increase in the need for transitional and supportive housing for families in 2009, with an average number of 93 families calling every week for one program opening (an increase of over 20 families a week).
J
essica and her children Carmen, Krystal, and Louis Jr. really enjoyed the Family Housing Holiday Party. The family housing social outings are great opportunities for families in our programs to connect with one another. Jessica is currently working part time at a daycare and is completing her G.E.D. so that she can become a full time lead teacher. The family is currently moving from Transitional Housing into our Elliot Park apartments.
The number of parents reporting homelessness due to foreclosures and lack of employment opportunities increased as well.
Overall in 2009 • 204 families with 516 children were served. This is a total of 777
participants, including the Family Roots Alliance, our partnership with Lutheran Social Service.
• •
98% of former participants had no evictions at one year from exit.
•
In our long-term supportive housing program, 75% of families maintained housing for one year.
•
88% of K-5th grade students demonstrated progress in reading skills after one year or longer in the program.
•
70% of children attended school at least 90 percent of the time during the 2008-2009 school year.
In our transitional housing program, 71% of families moved to permanent housing at exit.
A
lexyss and her mother SueAnn at the School Readiness Workshop. After seventeen months, Alexyss’ family recently graduated from the transitional housing program and moved into permanent, subsidized housing. While in the program, Alexyss maintained 95% school attendance and attended the reward outings to Valleyfair and Nickelodeon Universe. While in the program, SueAnn was able to increase her family’s income through increased Social Security benefits. All the family members are avid volunteers at their church.
In 2009, we received new funding from the Greater Twin
Cities United Way. “Reading by 3rd Grade” is an initiative whose goal is to increase the percent of students from low income families reading at grade level by the end of 3rd grade to 80% by 2012.
2006 The COHR team is formed. 61 long-term homeless men and women are placed into housing. 2007 The new Women’s Housing Partnership begins placing single adult women from our shelter into housing.
2007 Simpson acquires Passage Community

e acknowledge the donors listed in this report whose gifts were received from January 1, 2009 through December 31, 2009. We greatly appreciate the generosity and compassion of our donors. Your partnership allows us to serve the number of people experiencing homelessness that we do everyday of the year. Recently, we received a thank you note from the mother of one of our women’s shelter guests. We would like to share with you her thoughts: “Thank you for your program and for what your workers have done. I pray you will always receive the funds you need to continue your ‘people helping’ endeavors.”
