Sagaform – a success story Twenty years ago, two young men in Borås came up with the idea of supplying Swedish homes with innovative design. They introduced the banana hammock – and that was the beginning of the Sagaform success story. With gifts that you would love to both give and receive, Sagaform has a place in the kitchen and around the set table. Our talented designers work with an emphasis on Scandinavian design and innovative thinking. Ten years ago we introduced ourselves to the international market for the first time at the big design and interiors fair in Frankfurt. It was a huge success. GUSTAV HALLÉN has a bachelor’s degree in industrial design and a master’s degree in interaction design and trained at the Umeå Institute of Design as well as at Konstfack University College of Arts, Crafts & Design in Stockholm. After finishing his studies and gaining experience from IDEO Product Development, Gustav set up his own business working mainly with product development but also with interaction design and graphic design. His commissions have resulted in designs for various items, including furniture, interior details, telephones, hi-tech spectacles, packaging and TV graphics. Like the Accent coffee pot, Gustav’s products often have a clear graphic identity. Gustav has won two Red Dot Design Awards and is represented at MoMA (the Museum of Modern Art) in New York. 14

Accent can be summed up with the words “form & function”. By function, we don’t just mean good heat-retaining properties and an excellent pouring function with no drips. Accent also stands for good ergonomics, with its sturdy, rubberised handle that everyone can grip safely. Like a pan or a wine bottle, the shape flirts with the history and tradition of food, at the same time as the jug’s details bring to mind modern kitchen design. It’s a jug that’s perfect for being out on display in your kitchen.

ANN-CARIN is a product designer who trained at the HDK School of Design and Crafts at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, and the Royal College of Art, London. She is a member of the freelance group, Plan 3, which is based in Järntorget in Göteborg, Sweden. With her passion for food, she has created several well-known products for the kitchen. Finding inspiration and motivation in everyday situations, she works with designs that bring together functional, tactile and visual elements – much to the delight of those who use the products.

When I began work on designing POP, the aim was to unite visual joy and playfulness with function: a lovely feeling when you hold a cup or mug in your hands. I searched for designs with character and charm. Objects that stand out and brighten up your kitchen: on the dining table or a kitchen shelf waiting to be used. I have always been fascinated by the typical Swedish coffee drinking habits and wanted to design a series of items that quite simply enhance everyday life – cups and saucers for sweet treats and satisfying sandwiches.

PIA O. BJÖRKLUND AND MAGNUS FORTHMEIIER were trained at the School of Textiles at the University College of Borås and have worked with fashion for a range of Swedish businesses for many years. Since 1997, they have jointly run the Björk-Forth design studio, where they carry out freelance assignments in textile and product design for companies in Sweden and elsewhere. In addition to freelancing, they also create new products in their own collection for the Swedish design company Rotor, primarily from stoneware and textile.

Sagaform’s work with ethics and the environment. A joyful world needs companies that take responsibility for the environment and ethics. We have an active CSR strategy which includes everything from reducing greenhouse gas emissions and recycling packaging to improving working conditions in the countries where our products are made. SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY AND OUR CODE OF CONDUCT Sagaform does not own any factories. Instead we work with external suppliers who specialise in areas such as glass or ceramics. We demand that our suppliers abide by ILO conventions and work towards constant improvements when it comes to the environment and ethics. Our Code of Conduct includes requirements for minimum wages, regulated working hours and a ban on child labour. As active BSCI (Business Social Compliance Initiative) members, we work systematically with supplier inspections, dialogue and follow-up in order to ensure that our Code of Conduct is being complied with. All BSCI inspections are carried out by accredited third-party institutes in order to ensure independent monitoring. This provides quality control assurance for us, our suppliers and for our customers.

Some issues and challenges require collaboration at a higher level. That is why our CSR staff also work in forum and round-the-table discussions with other companies and international organisations. For example, several times a year, we take part in BSCI meetings together with other BSCI companies involved in areas ranging from clothing to food to technical. We also take part in Buyers Forum in Bangladesh, which is coordinated by the World Bank, and has included facilitating discussions with government representatives.

Sagaform products should be safe and free from banned substances. That is why all our suppliers must follow the standards set out in the Group’s chemical list. The list has been created to comply with current legislation, such as REACH and EU regulations on products that come into contact with foodstuffs, as well as taking recommendations from various industries into account. We are part of the Swerea Chemicals Group, through which we are party to all the latest information and developments concerning chemicals and regulations. We also carry out random checks and tests to make sure the products in our range live up to Sagaform’s demands.

RECYCLING FOR A SUSTAINABLE SOCIETY By sorting our waste, we can help to reduce environmental impact and create a sustainable eco-cycle. Sagaform takes responsibility for being a producer and pays the costs involved when customers hand in their packaging at collection stations for recycling. The Green Dot is international proof that our packaging is part of a recycling system. We think that feels good!

Transport produces a large proportion of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions. Transport by boat is generally the best alternative for goods that are shipped long distances and we try to avoid air transport as far as possible. Sagaform has two main strategies for reducing our impact on the environment from transport. We try to influence the shipping agents and transport companies we work with by participating in the “Clean Shipping Project” network. This network, which was founded in 2007, has created a tool that helps companies to evaluate various freight and shipping agents according to their environmental impact. This information can then be used during negotiations in order to pressurise agents to make environmental adaptations. We also consolidate all our shipments with our sister companies within the New Wave Group. In this way, we protect the environment from unnecessary journeys and half-filled loads by making sure containers and loads are always full.
