Oldfarm is the former home of George B. Dorr, the first superintendent of Acadia National Park. Once part of an estate that covered over one hundred acres, the National Park Service retains approximately 58.65 acres of the estate by Compass Harbor, just south of the village of Bar Harbor. Dorr’s parents, Charles Hazen Dorr and MaryGray Ward Dorr, purchased the property in 1868 and built the Oldfarm Queen Anne Shingle-style “cottage” in the late 1870s. George Dorr lived at Oldfarm for most of his life (1853-1944) and donated the property to the National Park Service in 1942.
Area IV: Oldfarm Foundation, Drive and Terraces
Landscape Character Areas for the remaining Oldfarm property organize the surrounding landscape according to existing features, and historic usage.
The estate once included the large “cottage”, numerous outbuildings (barns, garages, and a caretaker’s cottage), a tennis court, a saltwater swimming pool, expansive English-style gardens. Today, the site is a popular destination for hiking, walking, and picnicking. Working with staff from Acadia National Park, the Somes Pond Center, Friends of Acadia, and interested members of the public, a Cultural Landscape Inventory and Assessment was completed for the property. The goal was to identify remaining landscape features, provide a historic overview, and guide future management decisions for vegetation, circulation, and views. The final product is a 150-page document that adresses the overall integrity and condition of the Oldfarm landscape today.
