ATHLETES UNLIMITED AUX SOFTBALL 101

WHO WE ARE

Athletes Unlimited is a new model of professional sports where athletes are decision makers and individual players are champions of team sports. We lit erally change the game with faster play and fluid teams, delivering next-level competition and engagement in which every moment counts. Beginning in 2020 with Women’s Softball and following with Women’s Volleyball (2021), Women’s Lacrosse (2021), Women’s Basketball (2022) and AUX Softball (2022), Athletes Unlimited will build the next generation of both athletes and fans.

Our athletes are in charge of their team and league decisions, and of their individual success. We reboot timetables, rosters, and gameplay to create fast and exciting competition that speaks to contemporary sports fans, bring ing them close to the action and the athletes in games where every moment counts. We incorporate the player-centric model that fans love about fantasy sports. We use digital media platforms and cutting-edge technology to con nect fans deeply to athletes at the top of their game on and off the field, and to the game itself.

HOW THE TEAMS ARE SELECTED

A draft will be held prior to each series of games with the top three players in the individual leaderboard serving as the team captains. The captains will then fill their rosters by selecting 13 other players. Each draft will be held two days prior to the start of each six-game series.

Uniform colors will be assigned based on the team captain’s rank on the leaderboard. The top-scoring captain’s team will wear gold, while the sec ond-highest point scorer’s team dons orange jerseys. The third-place team will wear blue jerseys during each series.

Each team will consist of 14 players, including four pitchers, two catchers, two middle infielders, two corner infielders, three outfielders and one designated player.

RULES OF INTEREST

Game Duration: Each Athletes Unlimited AUX Softball game will consist of seven (7) innings regardless of the game’s score. If the visiting team scores in the top of the seventh inning but trails in the game, the home team will bat in the bottom of the inning in an attempt to win the inning points.

Extra Innings: Team inning points and individual stat points are not earned in extra innings. Only inning points that have carried over from the seventh inning and team game win points can be accumulated.

Captain’s Challenges: Each captain will be permitted two (2) video review challenges per game, which will be sent to the replay official for a final deci sion. A challenge must be indicated by one of the two designated team rep resentatives either verbally or visually before the next pitch is thrown, before all members of the infield have left their positions and fair territory, or before the umpires have left the field of play. A challenge is indicated visually by tapping the top of the head with one hand.

In addition, umpires are allowed to initiate a video review of any call in the reviewable plays list once the game reaches the sixth inning.

The following plays can be reviewed:

1. Whether a batted ball called fair, is fair or foul.

2. Whether a batted ball called a ground-rule double or home run is fair or foul.

3. Whether a batted ball called foul that could result in a ground-rule double or home run is fair or foul.

4. Decide scoring players at home plate, including collisions (illegal and/or malicious slides), obstruction by a defensive player or timing plays

POSTSEASON AWARDS

ATHLETES UNLIMITED AUX SOFTBALL 101

The top three players on the final leaderboard will receive a medal designed and fabricated for Athletes Unlimited by Lisa Issenberg, founder of Kiitellä, inc. The front face of the media represents the identity of Athletes Unlimit ed, while the back face of the medal leans into the specific sport, the year, location and words about Athletes Unlimited’s vision, mission and values on and off the field - Excellence in Community and Leadership. In addition, the Defensive MVP presented by GEICO will receive a plaque.

ATHLETE COMPENSATION

Athletes are compensated in three ways during an Athletes Unlimited season, including base pay, win bonuses (inning and game wins) and a leaderboard bonus. The leaderboard bonus also includes an additional donation equal to half of the athlete’s leaderboard bonus to their selected cause partner.

INDIVIDUAL LEADERBOARD

While traditional softball statistics are kept during each Athletes Unlimited AUX game, players earn individual points by accumulating those statistics. Points accumulated by statistics, set and/or match wins and MVP selections are used to create an individual leaderboard, which determines captains for each series and the individual champion at the end of the season.

Points are awarded at the following increments for hitters during the game: Single +10 Points Double +20 Points Triple +30 Points Home Run +40 Points Stolen Base +10 Points Caught Stealing -10 Points Base on Balls +8 Points Hit By Pitch +8 Points Sacrifice Fly/Bunt +10 Points

In addition, pitchers can earn individual points for the following statistics: Out Recorded +4 Points

Earned Run Allowed -10 Points

Athletes will be awarded 10 individual points if their team wins a single inning. If the teams score the same number of runs in an inning, the points carry over to the next inning.

Athletes on the winning team in each game will be awarded 50 individu al points toward the individual leaderboard. The total score determines the overall game winner, which means a team may lose multiple innings, but still win the overall game.

A total of three MVPs will be selected following each game by the athletes with the top player earning 60 points. The second MVP receives 40 points, while the third MVP claims 20 points.

THE BOOK OF UNLIMITED

The Book of Unlimited was designed, handmade and bound for Athletes Un limited. The book weighs nearly 25 pounds, measures approximately 12” by 18” and contains nearly 500 pages. The champion, along with all who com peted, are inscribed into the book. In addition, The Book of Unlimited also contains a history of achievements in Athletes Unlimited, including stories, highlights and events.

The book is opened during the Opening Ceremony for each season and is closed after the champion is named and her name is inscribed into the book.

The tradition began during Athletes Unlimited Softball’s inaugural season in 2020.

GOLD STANDARD

Pitcher Danielle O’Toole became the first champion in the history of AUX Softball after finishing the inaugural campaign with 1,436 points. The former Arizona Wildcat became the seventh champion in Athletes Unlimited’s three-year history.

A CHAMPION OF A DIFFERENT COLOR

Pitcher Danielle O’Toole became the first champion in Athletes Unlimited history to win the crown despite not wearing the gold team jersey in the season’s final series. O’Toole began the final series in second place on the leaderboard, donning the orange jersey.

STATE YOUR POSITION

Pitcher Danielle O’Toole became the third pitcher in as many softball seasons to claim an Athletes Unlimited title. Cat Osterman claimed the inaugural crown during the 2020 Championship Season, while Aleshia Ocasio followed in last summer’s Championship Season.

GOOSE EGGS

The June 20 doubleheader featured the first time in Athletes Unlimited Softball history where both games finished in a shutout. Team Fischer downed Team Gibson, 3-0, while Team Mulipola blanked Team Gibson in the nightcap by a 5-0 result. They were the only two shutouts registered during the inaugural AUX Softball season.

FIRST STRIKE

Teams that won the first inning win points went on to earn the victory in 13-of-18 games during the inaugural AUX Softball season.

GOING THE EXTRA MILE

Five games during the inaugural AUX Softball season needed extra innings, including three of the final six outings. Four of the five extra-inning affairs were decided by a one-run margin, while the final contest was a 10-6 decision for Team Fischer. In the first two seasons of Athletes Unlimited Championship Season play, there were a combined four extra-inning games.

THE NEVERENDING GAME

Team Zerkle and Team Fischer closed the inaugural AUX Softball season with the lon gest softball game in Athletes Unlimited’s three-year history. The contest, which Team Fischer won by a 10-6 count, lasted 10 innings. It was the ninth softball game to require extra innings with the previous four affairs coming in the 2021 Championship Season.

DOING THE TWO STEP

A team won both games of its scheduled doubleheader during the 2022 AUX Softball season. Team Fischer accomplished the feat on June 18 with an 8-4 victory over Team Mulipola before a 3-2 verdict against Team Gibson. Team O’Toole followed on June 23 with a 4-3 extra-inning triumph over Team Zerkle and a 7-3 win against Team Fischer. On June 24, Team Zerkle returned the favor against Team O’Toole by an 8-4 count after edging Team Fischer, 2-1.

SWIPE LEFT, SWIPE RIGHT

Base runners were just 8-for-13 (.615) in stolen base attempts during the inaugural AUX season. Outfielder Aliyah Andrews was a perfect 3-for-3 in her attempts, while a group of five other players each tallied a stolen base over the 18-game season.

A GRAND FEELING

Catcher Sashel Palacios hit the first grand slam in AUX Softball history with her blast in the fourth inning against Team Mulipola on June 19. Palacios’ home run to right field in the top of the fourth inning trimmed Team Gibson’s deficit to 7-4 and ignited a sev en-run outburst that tied the game at 7-7.

MAKING A GRAND EXIT

Infielder Courtney Gano ended the inaugural AUX Softball season with a grand slam in the bottom of the 10th inning to give Team Fischer a 10-6 victory over Team Zerkle on June 25. Gano, who finished with six runs batted in, capped a five-run 10th inning with a shot over the left field bleachers with one out in the frame.

MULTIPLICATION TABLES

Outfielder Victoria Hayward authored a league-high seven multi-hit games, including a four-hit performance against Team Chidester on June 14. Hayward, who led the league with 22 hits, hit safely in 10 of her 11 outings, including the final seven in a row.

YOU COMPLETE ME

Georgina Corrick and Danielle O’Toole were the only pitchers with a complete game during the inaugural AUX Softball season. Corrick authored a pair of complete games, including a 9.1-inning effort in the final game against Team Fischer. O’Toole, meanwhile, had her complete game effort against Team Fischer on June 23.

Pitcher Georgina Corrick ended her first professional season as the league leader in strikeouts and innings pitched. The former South Florida standout hurled 26 strikeouts over 39.0 innings while authoring a 2.14 earned run average. Corrick also claimed a 4-2 record in the circle to tie Danielle O’Toole for the league lead in victories.

TWO FOR THE PRICE OF ONE

Rookie Georgina Corrick became the first pitcher in Athletes Unlimited Softball history to win both games of a doubleheader when she earned the decision in both of Team Zerkle’s victories on June 24. After pitching a complete game to seal a 2-1 verdict, Cor rick threw 2.0 scoreless innings to earn the win as Team Zerkle beat Team O’Toole, 8-4. In the two games, Corrick scattered just six hits over 9.0 innings with one run allowed.

CIRCLE K

Rookie Georgina Corrick notched 10 strikeouts in her complete game victory against Team Fischer on June 23, becoming just the second pitcher in Athletes Unlimited Soft ball history to reach the mark. Cat Osterman, the inaugural Athletes Unlimited cham pion, fashioned 10 or more strikeouts in a game five times during her two AU seasons, including a league-record 16 punchouts against Team Reed on Sept. 21, 2020.

ODDS AND ENDS

• Hitters fashioned a .288 batting average during the inaugural AUX season.

• Infielders Sam Fischer and Sierra Romero and catcher Dejah Mulipola were tied for the league lead with 11 runs batted in apiece, while outfielder Megan Wiggins drove in 10 runs in her 12 appearances.

• Mulipola also paced the circuit with seven runs batted in with two outs.

• Corner infielder Tori Vidales led the league with seven extra-base hits, including a league-high four doubles.

ASPIRATION ROUND THE BASES

For every run scored during the 2022 Athletes Unlimited AUX Softball season, Aspiration committed to planting 10 trees.

CAUSE AND EFFECT

The Athletes Causes program, powered by Give Lively, will provide funding to charities of the players’ choosing equal to 50% of their season bonus and players will have the opportunity to create their own fundraising pages to support the organizations of their choice.

RESTORING A SOFTBALL IDENTITY IN SAN DIEGO

There’s something brewing in San Diego, and it’s the resurgence of a vibrant softball community.

When the San Diego State Aztecs’ season ended in May, the same fans that filled the stands for the Mountain West Conference champions returned for the launch of AUX Softball. The inaugural season is an expansion of the Athletes Unlimited model, giving players more opportunities to compete through out the year.

Victoria Hayward knows what it’s like to be a part of building something from the ground up. She’s the first athlete who signed to AU and the chairperson of the Softball Player Executive Committee. In November, she joined the SDSU coaching staff and helped guide the program to a 39-16 record (.709), the second-best in program history.

After falling to no. 8 Arizona State at the NCAA Tempe Regional final, most of the SDSU athletes would pack up and head home for the summer. But this summer it’s different. Many of them have stayed around for AUX.

“To have them continue to watch the game – watch the best people in the game – I think that’s a huge way you continue to grow as an athlete,” Hayward said.

HISTORY REPEATED

This isn’t the first time pros and Aztecs have shared a field on campus. As the program launched its inaugural season in 1977, professional softball was competing on the field next door. The International Women’s Professional Softball Association (WPS) was in its second year and the San Diego Sandpipers called SDSU home too.

Co-founded by Billie Jean King, Joan Joyce, and commissioner Dennis A. Murphy, the WPS set out with a goal that sounds similar to Athletes Unlimited.

The commissioner wrote in his opening letter to softball fans, “We know that the era of the ‘woman athlete’ is here… we join with you that the future is unlimited for women’s sports and together we will be a part of history.”

Almost half a century later, AU is furthering the same goals of the WPS and Sandpipers: bringing professional softball around the country and expanding opportunities for players to make a living as pros.

A CAREER PATH EMERGES

For many SDSU softball players, continuing their softball career at the next level wasn’t in their sights before a coach like Hayward.

Conference Pitcher of the Year Maggie Balint thought that after her season was canceled by COVID-19, she’d compete another year and be finished. Until she got “an itch” as a senior.

Thankfully “Coach Vic,” a 13-year veteran of the Canadian National Softball Team and Olympian, was in her ear.

“Vic (Hayward) came in and she’s like, ‘Dude, you can totally do it,’” Balint said. “‘If you wanna, go get it.’”

She knew there would be aspects to her game she would need to develop, especially considering she had no expectations the five years prior to ever playing pro.

Balint made professional debut on the same field she finished her collegiate career just a few weeks prior.

She’s alongside Hayward, who has gone from coach to teammate. Meanwhile, her former teammates – sophomores and juniors with collegiate eligibility –are watching them both.

“They’re texting me after games,” Hayward said. “Either telling me the things I did well or telling me like, ‘Oh, come on! It’s okay.’ They’re being my number one supporters.”

As a coach, Hayward says this is all she could want. She challenges them to pay attention to the pros and peppers them with questions. Who is in your position? How can you be more like them? What can you learn from them?

The opportunity to see professional softball in southern California has been restored and its impact is being felt on campus and beyond.

AUX IS BACKYARD BALL FOR SASHEL PALACIOS

About 25 minutes south of San Diego State University down 1-805 is Discovery Park – a collection of ballfields where Bonita Valley Girls Softball plays. It’s also where Sashel Palacios’ softball dreams started in her little catching gear that covered her red, white and blue uniform.

Since then, the equipment has stayed the same but the uniform has changed over time.

Navy and Carolina Blue for Otay Ranch High School. Maroon and gold at Arizona State University. Green, white, and red as a member of Team Mexico’s Olympic team.

And most recently, orange and white, competing in the AUX Softball season.

When Palacios was extended a contract at the end of season two to play another year with the league, there was an additional season in writing: AUX, a condensed three-week season intended to expand the league and opportunities for athletes to play more. The location would move from the league’s home in Rosemont, Illinois to another city: San Diego, California.

Palacios immediately called her mom and dad.

“Everybody was shocked for a second because it’s been so long since professional softball has been in San Diego,” Palacios said. “I don’t think it felt real till these couple games… To finally be here playing in this beautiful city that I freaking love is just, I’m so grateful and so happy that it was able to happen.”

She grew up going to the Olympic Training Center and San Diego State to watch softball from a young age. She hopes the return of professional softball to her city will reignite the same fire that was lit in her.

Palacios describes San Diego as a baseball dominant city but believes there’s room for softball in town because she was “that little girl.”

She would stand along the fence, waiting for hours after exhibition games for autographs from Olympians. Now she sees those same little league All-Stars waiting for her at the end of her Athletes Unlimited games.

A NEW FACE IN THE STANDS

As Palacios would say, “all (her) people are here.”

Her dad Kiko, mom Soida, sister Sharlize and brother Sabian have been in the stands.

But being in San Diego allows one of her biggest fans to finally see her play as a professional: her grandpa. He’s spent years tuning in to watch her on TV or streaming her games. He’d often be at the house while she worked in the cage with her dad but never able to see that finished product on the field.

“My brother and sister in the stands were like, ‘Grandpa would not be quiet about how you catch and how you play.’”

Until now, Palacios often wasn’t able to look into the stands and see her family’s reaction when she plays. Especially not when she hits a grand slam.

Palacios and Team Gibson trailed by seven behind Team Mulipola on Sunday after going three innings without a hit. They loaded the bases in the top of fourth and Palacios launched one into the right-field bleachers to tag all four bases with the first grand slam of AUX Softball. It was a moment that, without the expansion of AU, would not have been one she shared with her entire family. You couldn’t have written it better: Palacios back in her hometown, on Father’s Day, hitting the grand slam that changed the course of the game.

Later in the game when she was walked, she looked up into the stands from first base, smiled, and flashed them a thumbs up.

For Palacios, her journey took her right back to where she started in this game. But for all the softball and baseball players in the San Diego area, they won’t only aspire to be a Fernando Tatis Jr. or Wil Myers. They can be a Palacios too.
