ANALYSIS

CHICAGO IS A CITY THAT GREW AROUND THE MAIN STEM OF THE CHICAGO RIVER WHICH ONCE BLEW INTO LAKE MICHIGAN. ENGINEERS THEN REVERSED THE RIVER FLOW MAKING IT FLOW TOWARDS THE SOUTH, FINALLY REACHING MISSISSIPPI RIVER. BECAUSE THE POLLUTION STARTED TO FLOW TOWARDS THE SOUTH OF THE CITY, PEOPLE WITH HIGHER INCOME STARTED TO MOVE NORTH AND PEOPLE WITH LOWER INCOME SOUTH, CREATING A CLEAR SEPARATION. ALTHOUGHA SEGREGATED SYSTEM, IT ALL COMES TOGETHER AT ONE POINT IN THE CENTER, WHERE PEOPLE FROM DIFFERENT CULTURES AND SOCIAL AND ECONOMICAL STATUS MEET. THE MAIN CONNCETIONS OF THIS COMPLEX SYSTEM IS THE MULTIPLE TRANSPORTATION SYSTEMS CHICAGO HAS. I WAS ABLE TO EXPERIENCE IT IN MANY WAYS (WALKING, BIKE, CAR, METRO, SKATEBOARD) EACH TYPE OF TRANSPORTATION HAD ITS OWN WAY OF INTERACTION WITH THE CITY OR ENVIROMENT, DEPENDING IF WALKING, WHERE YOU ARE ABLE TO STOP AND LOOK OR IN A CAR WHERE EVERYTHING JUST PASSES BY YOU.

IN THIS MODEL THE TWO MAIN MASSES ARE SEPARETED BUT STILL CONNECTED IN THE CENTER BY SUPPORTING ELEMENTS THAT HOLDS THE WHOLE STRUCTURE TOGETHER. ALSO EACH PORTION OF THE MODEL (TOP AND BOTTOM) HAVE THEIR QUALITIES AND PATTERMS, REPRESENTENTING HOW EACH SIDE OF THE CITY CAN HAVE ITS OWN IDENTITY BUT STILL MAKE UP ONE SINGLE SYSTEM THAT WORKS TOGETHER AS WHOLE.

PROGRAM

THIS IDEA OF PENETRATING AND LAYERING INFORMATION OF THE CITY TO COME UP WITH A FINAL PERCEPTION, BROUGHT ME TO THE IDEA OF RADIOLOGY, AND HOW IT HAS TO PENETRATE MULTIPLE LAYERS OF SYSTEMS TO CREATE A FINAL IMAGE TO DIAGNOSE A PATIENT. ALSO RADIOLOGY WORKS WITH DIFFERENT SPEEDS OF RAYS AND DIFFERENT TIMES OF EXPOSURE FOR DIFFERENT PURPOSES, SAME WAY IN A CITY EACH WAY OF TRANSPORTATION HAS ITS DIFFERENT SPEEDS AND EXPOSURE, AND SAME WAY SKATEBOARDS ALLOW YOU TO STOP AND FOCUS IN SOMETHING SPECIFIC OR TRAVEL FAST AND FOCUS AND PENETRATE MANY LAYERS AT ONCE. THE SITE IS DIVIDED BY AN EXISTING BUILDING (RIVER CITY I) PART OF AN EARLY DEVELOPMENT IDEA FOR THE SITE TO IMPLEMENT MANY FUCTIONS TO THE SITE. TAKING THIS IDEA IN CONSIDERATION AND THE IDEA OF THE RADIOLOGY, A RADIOLOGY CENTER IS IMPLEMENTED IN THE NORTH SIDE OF THE SITE, AND A YOUTH RECREATIONAL CENTER IS INTRODUCED IN THE SOUTH SIDE OF THE SITE WORKING AS A MULTI PROGRAM COMPLEX THAT IS CONNECTED THROUGH ONE SINGLE ELEVATED PATH/BRIDGE SYSTEM.

ANALYSIS / PROJECT OVERVIEW

IN THIS PROJECT THE FOCUS WAS TO WORK ON A HEADQUARTER BUILDING FOR WWF (WORLD WILDLIFE FOUNDATION). THE SITE IS LOCATED AT A NEW EMERGING AREA SOUTH OF THE CAPITOL BUILDING AT WASHIGTON, D.C.. THE SITE CONSISTS OF ONE SIDE SURRONDED BY NEW TALL RESIDENTIAL BUILDINGS AND THE OTHER BY A BRAND NEW PARK AREA WITH ROW HOUSES ON THE OTHER SIDE, TWO DIFFERENT SCALES OF STRUCTURES. THE BUILDIGING SERVES AS A BRIDGE FOR THIS TWO SCALES, WITH A GREEN SLOPED ROOF FACING THE PARK, MAKES VISITORS FEEL THAT IT IS ALMOST AN EXTENSION OF THE PARK WHILE ADDRESSING THE TWO SCALES SURRODING THE SITE. THE PROGRAM CONSISTS OF OFFICES FOR WWF, A GALLERY WITH MULTIPLE EXHIBITIONS ABOUT IMPORTANT TOPICS RELATED WITH WILDLIFE, NATURE, AND SUSTAINABILITY, AN AUDITORIUM FOR MULTIPLE USES, GIFT SHOP AND CAFES FOR VISITORS. SLOPE OF GREEN ROOF ALSO HELPS MAXIMUM SUN EXPOSURE FACING THE SIDE WITHOUT HIGH RISES WHICH OBSTURCTS THE LIGHT.

ANALYSIS / PROJECT OVERVIEW

THE GOAL OF THIS PROJECT WAS TO CREATE AN ADDITION TO THE UNIVERSITY OF CENTRAL FLORIDA HISTORIC CENTER BUILDING LOCATED IN THE DOWNTOWN AREA OF SANFORD. SANFORD IS A CITY 45 MILES AWAY FROM THE COAST, BUT BECAUSE OF ST. JOHNS RIVER, SANFORD IS ACCESSIBLE BY BOAT, MAKING THE HISTORY OF STEAM BOATS (USED TO TRAVEL THE RIVERS AT THE TIME) VERY IMNPORTANT PART OF THE CITY’S HISTORY. JUST LIKE SANFORD RELAYED ON WATER THIS BUILDING UTILIZES A RAIN COLLECTING SYSTEM THAT SUPPLIES WATER TO ALOT OF COMMON NEEDS A BUILDING HAS. THE NEW ADDITION FEATURES A STORAGE AREA FOR HISTORICAL DOCUMENTS, ADMINISTRATION OFFICES, A GALLERY SPACE WITH SANFORD’S HISTORY DISPLAYED EXPLAINING ABOUT THE STEAM BOATS, AND AN EXHIBITION SPACE WHERE SOME INTERACTIVE ITEMS ARE LOCATED WHERE A STEAMBOAT MECHANISM AND OTHER WATER RELATED MECHANISM COULD BE DISPLAYED.

ANALYSIS / PROJECT OVERVIEW

IN THIS PROJECT, A STUDY WAS MADE WITHIN AN EXISTING NEIGHBORHOOD PARK SITUATED NEAR THE DOWNTOWN ORLANDO AREA. IT IS A LARGE AND NARROW SITE ROUNDED BY ONE AND TWO STORIES HOUSES WITH ONE BUSY STREET ON ONE SIDE (EDGEWATER DR.).ALTHOUGH A BUSY STREET HAS ACCESS TO THE SITE, AN EXISTING FENCE BLOCKS THE VIEW FROM THE BYPASSERS MAKING IT A REALLY “PRIVATE PARK”. BESIDES THAT THE PARK ALREADY SEEMED AS AN EXTENSION OF THE HOUSES AROUND IT, SINCE THAT STREET IS A VERY QUIET ONE AS WELL AS THE PARK ITSELF. MOST OF THE USERS ARE FROM THE HOUSES AROUND THE PARK, WALKING THEIR DOGS OR JUST DOING AN ACTIVITY SUCH AS JOGGING, BIKING OR PLAYING SOCCER. THE PARK ALREADY HAS SOME SET OF BOUNDARIES FOR ACTVITIES, SUCH AS A KIDS PLAYGROUND, A GAZEBO WITH SOME SEATING AREAS AROUND IT AND SOME PLACES FOR EXERCISING.

FOR OUR CONCEPT WE STARTED TO ANALIZE HOW WE COULD “BREAK OFF” FROM THIS OWNERSHIP OF THE HOUSES AND CREATE A PARK WHERE VISITORS AND LOCALS ARE ABLE TO FEEL WELCOMED. INTERACTION AND PLACEMENT OF CERTAING ACTIVITIES CAN AFFECT A SITE AND CREATE A BOUNDARY FROM THE HOUSES FACING THE SITE AT THE SAME TIME IT IS AN INVITATION TO OUTSIDE PEOPLE. FROM THAT WE DEVELOPED A COUPLE OF PROGRAMS WITHIN THE SITE ACCOMADATING DIFFERENT ACTIVITIES TRHOUGHOUT THE PARK. THIS IDEAL OF HOW EACH SPACE WOULD HAVE ITS OWN ACTIVATION WOULD LAYOUT AND SET THE IDEA OF TRESSPASSING THE BOUNDARY.

ANALYSIS / PROJECT OVERVIEW

FOR THIS PROJECT ME AND MY PARTNER HAD TO DESIGN AN ADDITION TO THE UCF CITYLAB STUDIO IN DOWNTON ORLANDO USING TWO CONNEX BOXES. THE CATALYST FOR THE PROJECT WAS THE MOVIE “LIFE OF PI”. OUR GROUP ANALIZED HOW HIS JOURNEY ON THE MOVIE IS COMPOSED OF FRAGMENTED PIECES OF HIS LIFE AND STORY AND IS CONNECTED BY A SINGLE “PATH”.

WE BROUGHT THIS IDEA DERIVED FROM THE MOVIE TO OUR DESIGN IN MANY WAYS. CONNEX BOXES ARE FRAGMENTED INTO DIFFERENT SPACES ACCORDING TO PROGRAM WHICH IS THEN CONNECTED BY A PATH. THE BUILDING HAS VISUAL COMMUNICATION OF DIFEERENT SPACES BUT ONLY ACESSIBLE BY THE MAIN PATH. THE SKIN OF THE BUILDING IS ALSO COMPOSED OF A SCREEN SYSTEM WITH DIFFERENT SIZES OF OPENING AND DIVISION OF SECTIONS OF SCREEN. CONCRETE STRUCTURES HANGING OVER THE CONNEX BOXES SERVES TO CREATE INSULATION AND SHADING.
