Poll: NY Majority supports marriage equality

from Empire Pride Agenda New York, NY, January 27, 2011 – Quinnipiac University has released a poll showing New York State voters support legislation allowing same-sex couples to marry 56 - 37 percent, the highest margin ever for that poll. A Siena poll released the previous week found that 57 percent of New Yorkers agreed with Governor Andrew Cuomo’s support for legalization of same-sex marriage, and last summer the New York Times estimated that 58 percent of New Yorkers are in favor of allowing same-sex couples to marry. In response to the results, Empire State Pride Agenda Executive Director Ross D. Levi issued the following statement: “Polls consistently show that allowing same-sex couples to legally marry has majority support in New York State. PA Legislator calls for civil unions

HARRISBURG, Feb. 14 – State Rep. Mark Cohen, D-Phila., today joined state Sen. Daylin Leach and other colleagues and advocates for marriage equality and civil unions during a Capitol news conference. ““Support for civil unions today does not preclude support for marriage equality now or in the future. The issue as I see it is whether we can grant meaningful rights and recognitions in the GLBT community within a reasonable period of time,” said Cohen, Democratic chairman of the House Human Services Committee. Cohen said 41 members of the House are cosponsoring his proposal (H.B. 708) to bring civil unions for same sex couples to the Commonwealth. members of the same sex and would have all the same state laws applicable to that union as marriage. He said it is increasingly clear that the votes do not exist in the foreseeable future to either constitutionally ban gay marriage in Pennsylvania, or to permit gay marriage in Pennsylvania. Civil unions represent the middle-of-the-road compromise position between constitutionally banning and permitting gay marriages. “I believe that there is a reasonable chance that, with a strong organizational effort, we can enact civil union legislation by the end of 2012,” Cohen said. “Doing so would require the support of the vast majority in the House and Senate, and the backing of a substantial number of Republicans in each chamber. This is possible to achieve in a legislature that does not support same-sex marriage because civil unions are not marriage. They are not a form of marriage; they are not a second-class marriage. They are not a marriage period. “What they are is a legal arrangement for committed gay and lesbian couples to handle relations with each other, with health care decisions, with joint property and with the outside world. Civil unions do not have the social significance of marriage, and they likely never will. They are however, an important step forward in the process of according gay and lesbian couples the respect as human beings that all people should have,” Cohen said. Nothing in Cohen’s bill would require any religion or any clergyman to perform any ceremony uniting people in a civil union. The legislation would merely offer committed gay couples the same legal rights that are bestowed upon married people, without giving them the status of marriage. Cohen said polls shows support of civil unions at about 60 percent of the Pennsylvania population: 58 percent according to the Franklin & Marshall College poll in 2009

Report on Erie Town Hall Meeting & Equality on the Rocks on Jan 26

by Mike Mahler On January 26, Equality Pennsylvania, ACLU PA and Human Rights Campaign (HRC) organized an LGBT Town Hall meeting and social for about 65 area people. This was part of a statewide series of events. Representatives from area groups and individuals attended to learn more about being active in state and federal politics. The event was held at Matthew’s Trattoria, 153 E 13th St, Erie. The organizers were pleased with the interest and excitement shown from by the local community and look forward to working more in Erie. They also were thankful to Rich McCarty, Equality PA Board Member & Mercyhurst Professor, for his help in making this event go so successfully. Freedom By Rick Moyer Pastor, Community United Church The month of February honors the birthdays of two famous American presidents. For this reason, I’ve been thinking about one of our greatest American freedoms – the freedom of religion. In our country we take religious freedom and the separation of church and state for granted. And yet, these concepts can often be hard to understand and confusing for many people. Early in my ministerial career I was introduced to the state-church conflict. The church I was serving as a young pastor did not display an American flag in the church sanctuary. After the death of a prominent member of that congregation, the family of the deceased decided that they would present a flag in his memory. We received the gift gratefully and place it in the chancel of the sanctuary. The addition of a flag along side the altar caused controversy. The congregation was divided, almost down the middle. Half of the congregation objected, saying that it sent the wrong message. God, after all, is not an American. God is the God of all people – of all races and nationalities. The opposing view was that God surely doesn’t object to us being patriotic, and we can be proud of the fact that we are a country that guarantees many freedoms. I kept clear of taking sides as long as I could. No matter what my view was, I was going to offend at least half of the congregation. The side that wanted the flag to stay eventually won out and the flag is still there today. But no matter who won the argument, the debate was an important one. We certainly do believe that God is God of all people, not just Americans. On the other hand, we can display a flag to indicate our allegiance to a country that, at least in theory, does value a person’s freedoms and honors diversity. And of course, the discussion about diversity goes far deeper than the disagreement over placing a flag in a religious gathering place. After the recent tragic shootings in Tucson, AZ, Maine historian, Allen Ginsberg’s observation got to the heart of what this country is all about. It is a state-

ment that truly honors the memories of Washington and Lincoln who sacrificed so much of their lives to pass onto us the freedoms we enjoy today. Ginsberg wrote “(At Tucson) we saw a white, Catholic Republican federal judge murdered on his way to greet a Democratic, women, member of Congress, who was his friend and was Jewish. Her life was saved initially by 20-year old Mexican-American, gay college student, and eventually by a Korean-Mexican-American combat surgeon. And then it was all eulogized and explained by our African-American president. In this tragic event, that’s a remarkable statement about this country at its best.” The Community United Church is an open and affirming congregation and is is a member of United Church of Christ and Church of the Brethren denomination. .
