Background of Evolution Music Festival Evolution Music Festival is a music show held every year by ‘Newcastle Gateshead Initiative.’ The venue is on the Quayside of the Tyne River and holds over 60,000 people. This festival runs for two days and has two different stages. The majority of the crowd consists of people from the ages 14-19. (Source links on last page).

Partner Team Brief -We want you to design a product that can be used to interact with the Music/Performance. -Also, the product should have a secondary purpose which people can communicate with each other. -The item could act also as a barrier pass, distributed prior to the event or will have to be easily distributed when going into a stage area.
Summary of Brief Goals We were asked to make a product that:
Creates a memory that audience members will remember for the rest of their lives.
Encourages involvement with the performance itself.
Encourages interaction between audience members.
Acts as a ticket to gain access to the music festival.
Original Concepts Hat Concept
A keepsake that audience members can wear. Encourages interaction between audience members by allowing them to write messages on each others hats. After the music festival is over, the the hat can become a box to hold keepsakes, pictures, and other objects that created memories during the concert.
Lanyard Concept
These lanyards have exchangeable note strips that can be written on and shared to encourage interaction between audience members. These lanyards all have pockets for collecting messages. The lanyard concepts also include a ticket, lineup card, and map of the venue and stages to help the audience member navigate through the event.
Original Concepts Tear Apart Bracelet Concept
This is a concept for a sheet of thin plastic bracelets that can be torn off individually, written on, and exchanged with and worn by friends. This encourages interaction between audience members.
Glow Stick Bracelet Concept
This concept encourages interaction through the sharing of different colored glow sticks. Each audience member is given glow sticks of the same color which encourages them to interact with others to exchange for different colored glow sticks. The top of the bracelet has their ticket bar code on it for entry into the music festival. The glow sticks on the bracelet encourage involvement with the performance as the audience members put their hands in the air and wave their hands with the music.
Feedback from Partners
The Hat “...could be difficult with wearing a hat in Newcastle as it’s REALLY WINDY and they would end up in the river really quickly!”
The Lanyards/Tear off Wristbands “...doesn’t really provide a lot of scope to communicate with new people...people are less likely to approach someone they do not know and give them a message.”
The Glow Band Bracelet “WE LOVE IT!!! We would definitely like to see this developed as we feel that it answers the brief perfectly. Having to swap an item, with whoever has the specific colour you want, really gives the wearer a legitimate reason to approach an other and start a new conversation.” “The only criticism we can think of from what we have seen of the wristband is that the bits holding the glowsticks on are a bit chunky and stick out too much.”
Mock Up Developments Both of these concepts further explored how to decrease the visibility of the glow stick holders. This is done by decreasing their size and putting one under the top surface that has the ticket bar code on it. During this stage, exploration into the flat pattern and ability to produce the product from one flat cut out shape began.

Criteria for evaluation How we decided on a final design
1
The full bracelet seemed too bulky and used too much material for it’s purpose.
3
Flat pieces assembled together offer easier, more efficient packaging and shipping of a bulk amount.
2
A top connector piece holding the ticket could accomplish the same thing as a full bracelet with less material.
4
Discovering and experimenting with the polypropylene’s properties changed our approach and concept greatly.
Material Exploration Expirementing with different materials and patterns
After examining the physical characteristics of polypropylene we realized that it resisted bending and snapped when scored. For this reason, we decided to explore slotted construction designs, as bent designs appeared to be an impossibility. After laser cutting the material, it melted severely along the cut line. For this reason, we tried a similar pattern with plexi-glass due to its ability to be cut cleanly with the laser cutter. After cutting this pattern, we realized it was very brittle and broke easily. After multiple attempts failed attempts to adjust the pattern, we returned to the polypropylene. We adjusted the pattern to account for the narrower material and the melting edges.
