Studio VIETNAM: HemAir Travelling studio to Saigon, Vietnam Master of Urban Design & Master of Architecture Studio, 2016 RMIT University Tutors: Graham Crist and Gretchen Wilkins Grade: 90 This project is a bridge tower containing affordable social housing suspended to an existing bridge with a public sports centre underneath. The project combines two prominent typologies in Saigon. ‘The old and the new’ are brought together by combining the traditional hyperdense laneway culture and the rapidly developing curtain wall towers. A sports centre is added underneath the housing tower to create a destination and to activate the dull and unused riverside area.

PRECEDENT STUDIES: SILODAM BY MVRDV Analysis of assigned precedent:the Silodam housing by MVRDV. Analysis conducted by studying and recreating plan, section, elevation, site plan, and massing model. As part of a transformation of an industral area, the Silodam was built with the intention of accomodating a wide variety of housing types for families and individuals from different social and economic backgrounds, sampled from the existing typology in the surrounding context. Resembling a shipping container, the variety of typologies are represented in different colored and material on the facade.

What makes the building urban? As the 10-storey horizontal tower floats on the river on the edge of a pier, its relationship with the city is tied with the long, stretched out pier, providing privacy for its residents. The fact that the building contains a mixture of housing typologies and private-communal spaces, proves the fact that the buiilding itself functions as an urban neighborhood - a small vertical city in its own right. Corridors are designed as streets, with meeting points scattered dotted around, providing opportunities for residents to meet and interact. The ground level of the building serves as a public space, with a restaurant cantilevered above the waters.

SITE ANALYSIS & PRECEDENT STUDIES: PLACING SILODAM in SAIGON
With the decision to preserve the nature of Silodam, which is to float above water, it is then relocated to above the wide Ben Nghe Canal in District 1, Saigon. This site is chosen due to its richness in context, including hyper-dense residential hems on both sides of the river and street market in the vicinity, inactive landscape strips on the sides, a bridge with a pedestrian pathway that connects both sides of the river, as well as a wide highway road. The site holds potential to be a public destination for residents of Saigon. However, the existing highway road in between the HEM dwellings and the riverside landscape imposed a lack of connectivity, especially for pedestrians and motorcyclists within this rich urban fabric. Thus, a solution is proposed with the site selection and relocation of the Silodam as a bridge building that connects both sides of the river through its public lobby and restaurant in the first floor.

The ground level of Silodam is utilised according to its function - as a public space. It is then given an additional stairs on the restaurant end, creating a continuous public pedestrian brige to improve ease of pedestrian crossing in the vicinity.

A public space concourse is proposed to be suspended to existing bridge and proposed tower. Sports activities added in order to establish a destination. Housing unit designed as blocks of 4-levels each, with different and irregular layout on each and every floor.

Fishermans Bend Masterplan: TRIAL-A-CLICHE Masters of Urban Design Studio, RMIT University 2015 Tutor: Mark Jacques Grade : 85 Masterplan for the transformation of Fishermans Bend from a previously industrial factory area into a 200ha employment precinct. The project investigates the new ‘expanded central city zones’ development in Melbourne, particularly the area of Fishermans Bend. Established developments, such as Docklands were based on cliched formulas that are arguably banal and generic. The studio aims to challenge said cliches, including, building as an autonomous object, tower-podium typology, and tabula rasa, by studying the pre-existing urban form of Fishermans Bend throughout the years with a focus on retaining existing built form and spaces.

03 Barcelona Workshop: INCLUSIVE CITY Masters of Urban Design Project RMIT University, 2015 Tutor: Eva Prats, Mark Jacques Two-week intensive workshop in Barcelona All drawings and physical model were done onsite using hand-sketching method. Site: Poblenou, Barcelona, Spain The project proposed elderly housing and farmers market in response to site demographic and existing condition. The majority of Poblenou residents consists of retired elderly. An existing community garden is utilised to grow fresh produce and as a socialising place for the elderly community. The proposal ties these situations together, suggesting a new housing and farmer’s market to enhance productivity and social life of Poblenou residents. The workshop is interested in studying the suburb of Poblenou in Barcelona. Poblenou was formerly an industrial area, and recently have been a subject of testing for an urban future. However, few housing projects are developed. The workshop focused on introducing social housing to the neighborhood, while creating a social and urban rehabilitation onto the area.

04 Westbank, Footscray Master of Urban Design Studio, RMIT University, Semester 1 2014 Tutor: John Doyle & Graham Crist Proposal for a commercial-residential precinct in Westbank, Melbourne Site: Westbank, Victoria, Australia The project focused on the urban growth area around the Footscray CBD and the west bank of the Maribyrnong river in Melbourne. The area has begun substantial intensification and transformation, with several high-rise developments already planned or underway, and as a precinct with a history of separation from central Melbourne. This area might be a new and distinct companion city to Melbourne. The project examines issues of urban density and speculates on strategies for urban intensification that take into account the specific structures, scales and characteristics of this part of Melbourne.

Studley Park Boathouse University of Melbourne Undergraduate Architecture (Architecture Design Studio 2) Site: Yarra’s Bend Park, Melbourne
The Studley Park Boathouse is a riverfront establishment that primarily functions as a restaurant and venue for various events such as weddings, conference, etc. Located in a secluded reserve, the north side of the site borders the Yarra River and was utilised as a place for water sports activities. The brief calls for a restaurant, multifunction hall, boat storage, as well as administration office. The project was intended to pay homage to Richard Meier, starting off by studying one of his most prominent architecture, and employing the principles for the design of the boathouse.

06 Cultural Discovery Centre University of Melbourne Undergraduate Architecture (Architecture Design Studio 1) Located on the centre of Herring Island, the Cultural Discovery centre is a gallery and community centre, deemed as a place of education and reflection. It consists of 4 galleries that each represent sequential elements of indigenous australian history: Indidgenous, Colonisation, Reconciliation, and a theatre to accomodate 200 people. The design derives its form from studies of indigenous aboriginal architecture, taking elemnts such as timber as a predominant material, arc shaped structures meant to respond to the climate and shade, as well as the outline of the building that is symbolic of a tree branch. In response to the brief, the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Colonisationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; gallery is partially sunken to the ground, whilst the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC; Reconciliation gallery is elevated, creating a dynamic circulation and experience for visitors.

Conan Doyle Mystery Theatre University of Melbourne Undergraduate Architecture (Architecture Design Studio 3) Site: Melbourne CBD, Australia Located on the corner of Bourke St and Spencer St, the theatre is dedicated on staging murder mystery plays, consisting of a 500-seat proscenium theatre, a 250-seat experimental theatre, and a 250-seat cinema, as well as a public restaurant. The concept was to represent mystery through the facade, which is designed to be dark and monolithic by the use of exposed concrete. The facade was treated as a skin that encapsulates stacked programs.

08 Wyndham Gateway University of Melbourne Undergraduate Architecture (Architecture Design Studio 4) A study of parametric forms using 3d modelling plugin Grasshopper. Site: Wyndham City, Victoria The result was a proposal for a gateway as an entrance for Wyndham City. The form represents the growth of the city, achieved by creating numerous prototypes using Rhinoceros and Grasshopper by a series of parameters. The 3D modelling and physical model fabrication process were done by â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Sectioningâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; method.

10 Gawi Kuningan Office Tower Internship Work 2015, AirMas Asri Architects and Engineering consultant Various design iterations for a 27-storey office tower in the heart of Jakarta CBD, including building massing and facade variations. The brief demanded a twin-tower and a â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;bridgeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; as a symbolism for luck and prosperity. Building Orientation, Material, and Facade design are largely based on Chinese architecture philosophy, Feng Shui.

Internship Work 2015, Blacksteel Properties
Design work for mixed-used commercial development in Nusa Dua, Bali. The development includes 50 retail shops, gardens, and an infinity pool. Located facing the Nusa Dua Beach, the design serves as an ode to Balinese fishermen and intends to enhance the tropical atmosphere by using Balinese timber as the main material, while maintaining an outdoor/open environment.
