I took my initial inspiration from the literal tornado that carries the Wizard and Dorothy to Oz and how both major events impact Elphaba’s life. These two events cause Elphaba’s life to twist and turn along a windy path. I imagined this windy path to create a web that becomes more and more dense throughout Elphaba’s life. The intent was to show the density of the building web with the wire webbing technique I used throughout the series of the 3 separate shades. I chose to do 3 shades specifically to signify the 3 major time periods of Elphaba’s life; childhood young adult, and then finally adulthood. The more the concept developed the more I chose to pull inspiration from the Yellow Brick Road. The Yellow Brick Road had a huge influence on Elphaba’s life. Not only did it allow Elphaba an easy path to travel along from childhood to young adulthood when she moves to college but again when she moves to the Emerald city. As she becomes older, even though Elphaba herself has abandoned the Yellow Brick Road, Dorothy tracks Elphaba using it. You can see the inspiration from the road come across in the gold framework of each individual shade. Finally the light itself is an LED light that emits a cool light. I encased the light inside a tube of green vellum to signify Elphaba’s skin color and also the Emerald City. Two things that have a huge negative impact on Elphaba’s life which become obstacles that she has to learn to live with as well as overcome.
