A New Space with a Familiar Face The St. Louis shopping scene is a vibrant mix of old favorite spots and fun, new shops that open fairly regularly. We are a fortunate city indeed to have such a broad range of locally owned stores. There is a shop for everything from men’s wear, to needlepoint, to lingerie, to accessories, and the list goes on. Uptown recently sat down with Tamara Netsch, owner of Shine - 9811 Clayton Rd 63124, to find out more about her new boutique.

UT: CONGRATULATIONS ON THE NEW SHOP! HOW DID THE IDEA FOR SHINE COME ABOUT? TN: Thank you! My first job ever at the age of 15 ,was with the Melanie’s that used to be in Columbia, MO. After college, I moved to Colorado before eventually landing in Minnesota, working in retail along the way. I was an apparel buyer for Bibelot for fourteen years. My jobs tended to gravitate toward women who owned local businesses. In 2014 I moved to St. Louis with my husband and daughter to manage the Melanie’s in Ladue. When Melanie decided to retire and close shop, I jumped at the opportunity to fill the void left by that absence. I had worked closely with Melanie for around 10 years, there were no other shops doing what she did. UT: TELL US WHAT KIND OF MERCHANDISE YOU CARRY AT SHINE. ARE THERE CERTAIN ITEMS ST. LOUISIANS SEEM FOND OF? TN: We have jewelry, scarves, handbags, gifts and clothing. I love to support local artists! For example, we sell candles made in Webster Groves and shoes made in St. Louis from recycled tires. Our biggest seller at the moment is pieces from the women’s clothing line “Cut Loose”. It’s a brand for all ages: comfortable, trendy and perfect for accessorizing. Of course here in St. Louis, hair bows and monogramming are huge too! We offer monogramming on almost anything, even items

not purchased at the shop. During the back-to-school rush we probably monogrammed 100 backpacks! Not to mention curtains for dorm rooms, towels, you name it. The best thing about Shine is that there truly is something for everyone. I wanted to appeal to every price point, from kids who are coming in to spend their allowance and moms looking for a special piece of jewelry. UT: WHAT TRENDS ARE YOU SEEING FOR FALL 2016? TN: Lots of tassels, pom-poms and suede. I’m seeing all of these details on everything from necklaces to handbags. You will find some of each at Shine. Stacked bracelets are still ontrend and happen to be my personal favorite. The more layered on my arm the merrier! UT: WE LOVE THE LOOK OF SHINE, IT’S SO OPEN AND BRIGHT! HOW DID YOU CHOOSE THIS LOCATION? TN: I was very familiar with this Ladue neighborhood. When the space became available I drove by it all the time and thought to myself, “I want that spot!” I knew it would be ideal for reaching our demographic and the layout was exactly what I was looking for. The name Shine came about because I kept circling back to that word. My goal is to evoke a feeling for people when they shop here. When you feel good, you shine! I felt the same way about this location - it shines too! UPTOWN MAGAZINE

BODY:

What You Have

Summer is drawing to an end and you may not have reached your “ideal” body. It is so easy to fall into the trap of becoming upset or sad about our current body shape. Regardless of your current shape, I strongly encourage you to accept your body in its current state for all the amazing things it does each day.

ONCE YOU CAN PRACTICE BODY ACCEPTANCE, you can begin to make small changes that can help you to achieve your goals. You will find that accepting your body now allows you to be happy in the moment, oftentimes making it easier to make better choices to build stronger habits to break the endless cycle of weight gain and weight loss over time. For now, let's focus on what you can do right now to flaunt what you have! REALISTIC GOALS One of the most important aspects of beginning (or continuing) an exercise program to flaunt what you have is to have realistic goals in mind. In order to better understand what type of workout you need to complete, you need to know what end result you are trying to achieve. It is important to 20

|

UPTOWN MAGAZINE

know what is realistic in terms of timing of results, as well. Typically, I expect to see one to two pounds of weight loss each week. Consistently losing more than this amount can sometimes signify a loss of lean body mass (muscle) or water weight. Since muscle helps to burn calories all day and gives your body a lean, toned look, you want to maintain as much muscle mass as possible while losing weight. CLOTHING When getting ready for the gym, don’t forget to consider your clothing. Pick clothing that makes you feel comfortable and allows you to move freely. You clothing choice should also make you feel confident and ready to tackle your best workout. The better you feel in your clothing, the better your workout will be! I strongly suggest investing in good quality clothes

that make you feel good. If you do not feel the need to adjust your clothing every 2 minutes while working out, you’ll be getting a much better workout! WORKOUTS Exercise should be an important part of any “Flaunt What You Have” routine. A good mix of cardio and strength exercises will help you achieve the confidence to really flaunt what you have (while striving for your “ideal” body!). Try to aim to exercise on most days of the week, completing cardio

and strength routines for best results. Below are some exercise programs to get you started! These workouts are great on their own to help you build muscle, however you can also use these workouts together for a weekly program to target (and flaunt!) your entire body. Be sure that you give your body adequate rest in between working the same muscle group to allow your body to recover. Give these workouts a try and enjoy feeling great while flaunting what you have! UT

OPUS – 25 N. CENTRAL

ALL EYES ON 130,000 people expected at the upcoming Saint Louis Art Fair, $1 billion in proposed investments, and one Presidential Debate. It’s no surprise that Clayton will soon be at the center of attention for the St. Louis region, the state, and the entire nation.

WITH POPULAR EVENTS LIKE THE ART FAIR and October’s Presidential Debate, hosted by Washington University in St. Louis, the Clayton area can anticipate an influx of visitors; with the suggested developments, the city will see countless more in the years to come.

DEVELOPMENT PLANS

The city is experiencing a building boom, with construction currently underway at 25 N. Central, 8500 Maryland, and 212 S. Meramec. All three projects are expected to be completed by late next year, when the new buildings will unveil residential areas totaling 120, 229, and 250 apartment units respectively. In addition, the projects will offer retail space, including new shops and restaurants in the downtown area. These significant developments were all recommended as part of Clayton’s Downtown Master Plan and will transform the city’s landscape. 24

CLAYTON Another potential development currently under consideration is the proposed Centene Clayton Campus expansion. Centene, one of the largest corporations in Missouri, is headquartered on Forsyth Boulevard. This enormous investment would push the city’s development total above $1 billion. Over time, the expansion would add more than 1.5 million square feet of office and retail space, as well as a hotel, an auditorium, and parking facilities. The proposed campus expansion would also strive to be pedestrian-friendly through the creation of more public open spaces, and would bring in an estimated 2,000 jobs following the completion of the project. With all of this development, it’s clear that Clayton isn’t slowing down anytime soon. In fact, its oldest and largest park is about to undergo a dramatic transformation of its own. The nearly fifty-acre Shaw Park, home to an ice-skating rink and an outdoor aquatic center, will have its north corner completely redesigned to create a multi-sensory landscape that includes a proposed plaza. Once constructed, Chapman Plaza will serve as the north pedestrian entryway to Shaw Park when finished. In addition to the plaza’s water feature and wood pergola, the design plans also include a cascading waterfall, a reflecting pond, and a stepping garden. The project has been made possible through a generous donation by the Chapman family and Barry-Wehmiller, a capital equipment and engineering solutions firm headquartered in Clayton, to the Clayton Century Foundation. Construction is set to begin this fall.

Earlier in the year, Nami Ramen opened on N. Central, extending the ramen craze into Clayton with fresh ingredients and ten different styles of ramen. Finally, Planet Sub opened on N. Meramec. The franchise is known for its healthy mission, and the shop serves up wraps and sandwiches on fresh bread that’s made from scratch. Since Vincent Van Doughnut opened its storefront on N. The shop frequently sells out of its handmade doughnuts and pastries before noon, and the unique flavors are so popular that the store is now selling several of its fillings and sauces separately. The treats are also available via food truck at events throughout the year.

MODERN DESIGN

This modern room setting is available at Encore Consignment Gallery

WHEN IT COMES TO THE LATEST TRENDS in today’s interiors, designers are mixing styles - modern with traditional. The simple, sleek, and smooth lines of modern furniture blend easily into any room. You want your home to be inviting, trendy, and most of all - to reflect your individual style. So, go for it – mix it up! There are no written rules. Today a room’s furniture needn’t be matching or from the same period. In fact, the use of contrasting styles can give a home more warmth and life. Here are some inspiring looks that illustrate the old adage, “Less is more.” Clutter is out; balance between old and new is in. Keep an open mind. Don’t be afraid to let yourself go in choosing what goes with what. Pairing an ornately carved table with a more modern, angular chair – it works! Oversized pieces can be a room’s focus. This is the year of Organic Glamour: a major trend is using natural materials such as wood, stone, cork, metals (in particular brass and copper). Combinations vary from classic wood, leathers, and marble to more interesting ones like concrete. Simplicity of form is important in the way each material is incorporated (pictured here a circa 1950’s round side table with polished black marble top). The circular black framed mirror, botanical prints, topiary sculpture, metal and glass ornaments – all work together to produce The Look. ‘Artisanal’ is another key word in today’s interior design. The use of natural fibers, organic shapes, hand-crafted accessories and hand woven textiles is a growing trend. And don’t forget the modern art at your feet! Colorful abstract patterns in area rugs (such as the one shown here) can bring a whole room altogether. Well, you get the idea - here’s hoping these latest designs will inspire you to create your own mod, mod world. UT

cooking with vicki bensinger OFTEN TIMES ON SUNDAYS when my son is in town, he’ll call to see if we would like to join him for breakfast at his favorite spot. Inevitably he orders the same thing Veggie Hash. I love vegetables but quite frankly I’m not a huge fan of brussel sprouts, especially for breakfast - an ingredient in Veggie Hash. Recently while joining him for breakfast he tried convincing me to order the Veggie Hash – I couldn’t do it! Ever since, I realized how silly I’d been not to try it typically I’m game for any dish! I decided to recreate the Veggie Hash, changing a few ingredients. The Veggie Hash he orders has onions, potatoes, brussel sprouts, spinach, and topped with 2 sunny side up eggs. My version had onions, sweet potatoes, brussel sprouts, tomatoes, spinach, then topped with 2 sunny side up eggs. With a second version topped with a poached egg, and drizzle of balsamic reduction. The result: A rustic dish totally satisfying that sustained me straight through to dinner. Now I understood my sons craving for this dish. Prepare Veggie Hash in a cast iron skillet. I used two 6 1/2-inch round skillets. In one I prepared all ingredients, topped with 2 eggs at the end, and finished in the oven, until egg whites were cooked, yolks firm, yet still runny. In the second skillet I sautéed onions, while roasting potatoes & brussel sprouts in the oven, drizzled with extra-virgin olive oil. Once cooked, added those to the skillet, along with tomatoes and spinach until wilted, and bright green. I topped the hash with a single poached egg drizzled with balsamic reduction. The first batch was more rustic and flavorful, which I preferred. Plus, I opted to drizzle balsamic reduction over that as well - the icing on the cake, so to speak! Veggie Hash is ideal any time of day. Serve individually or to a crowd, topped with an egg – poached or roasted in the oven with a balsamic drizzle. Simply irresistible!

VEGGIE HASH Yield: 2 servings INGREDIENTS 1/3 cup yellow onion, diced 1 cup sweet potatoes, peeled, 1/2-inch cubes 8 brussel sprouts, cut in half 12 baby tomatoes, sliced in half 2 handfuls of fresh spinach, divided 4 eggs, divided extra-virgin olive oil Salt & Pepper to taste Balsamic Reduction (homemade or store bought) 2 Cast Iron skillets, optional DIRECTIONS Preheat oven to 425F degrees Add 1 tablespoon of olive oil to each skillet. Heat until smoking. Add onions and sauté, 2 minutes. Add potatoes and brussel sprouts, sprinkle lightly with salt & pepper. Cook 4 minutes on medium heat - until tip of knife inserts easily into a potato. Add spinach and tomatoes stirring until spinach turns bright green. Carefully crack two eggs on top of hash and place in oven. Bake approximately 10 minutes or until whites look done and yolks are Remove from oven. Serve straight from the skillet drizzled with balsamic reduction.

SCAPEGOAT'S INTERIOR

PLNK ST. LOUIS

SCAPEGOAT Scape American Bistro in the Central West End has a new sister restaurant, that is the perfect compliment to Scape. Scapegoat, the new tavern next to Scape, is best described as the fun, whimsical offspring of Scape’s swanky, fine-dining environment. According to General Manager Geoff Dill, “Scapegoat is a tavern centered on technique and ingredient driven small plates and old-school cocktails”. With St. Louis anticipating the hunt for “Red October” and brisk fall weather, Scapegoat offers a perfect environment to catch the game over a variety of beer and cocktails and casual fare as it shares Scape’s idyllic, upbeat courtyard. You will definitely want to add Scapegoat to your list of places to try this fall.

PLNK Just because swimsuit season has come to an end, it doesn’t mean your fitness regimen should. If you are looking to try a new, calorie-scorching workout, PLNK provides this and so much more. Located in Frontenac at 1560 South Lindbergh Boulevard, PLNK is a total body, 50-minute workout with a focus on targeted muscular strength building and conditioning. Each class is a heart pumping, muscle quivering sweat session performed on a Megaformer. The workout is high intensity and low impact, so while it will test the limits of your muscles, and may leave you sore, the risk for injury is low. PLNK’s classes have been developed based upon the Lagree Method, and all instructors are Lagree trained and certified. The Lagree Method is an evolution of Pilates. Every exercise is performed slowly with a focus on alignment and mind body connection. The Method targets the slow twitch muscle fibers that are responsible for lengthening and elongating our bodies. Slow twitch muscles also turn on your metabolism burning fat and calories (up to 900!) for over 24 hours after you've left.

MAYANA'S TACOS

MAYANA MEXICAN KITCHEN If you love Hacienda in Rock Hill, then you will also love Mayana Mexican Restaurant in Clayton, located at 7810 Forsyth Boulevard. The name “Mayana” means “to be hungry” in Aztec. The restaurant’s signage artwork features the initials of the owner’s father, who passed away prior to Mayana’s opening. At Mayana, freshness is the focus. Each day, tortillas are made from scratch and meats are hand butchered, hand shredded and hand ground, and prepared using the famous recipes from Hacienda Mexican Restaurant. The South-American favorite, Chimichurri Salsa, is served as the perfect compliment to Mayana’s Fajita Steak, and the customer favorite habanero gold salsa brings a bold flavor to all of Mayana’s dishes. If you’re hungry, the name says it all! Satisfy that hunger with Mayana Mexican Kitchen’s bold and fresh cuisine. UT
