This season, the selection of incomparable dresses is endless. There is no reason you can not be the belle of the ball.

he debut of the tuxedo, the most debonair suit in the fashion realm, is credited to Great Britain. The story of the creation of this dapper suit has become as legendary as the suit itself. Sole credit must be given, however, to the Prince of Wales whom entrusted in 1865 that the preeminent men’s tailor shop in the land, Harry Poole and Co., would create at his directive the most comfortable and, at the time, most fashionforward dinner jacket ever imagined. The Prince of Wales sincere intent was to be rid of the annoyance that coat tails presented when attempting to sit and dance comfortably; however, in the process he also initiated a dress code violation that was one of the most talked about scandals of its time. The scandal which erupted was quite epic but, as with the launch of many fashion trends, the tuxedo soon became commonplace attire for formal events. Today, the tuxedo is just as popular as it ultimately became many years ago. Traditional tuxedo attire consists of a black jacket with satin embellishment, a white shirt, black pants and a black bowtie. This conventional tuxedo look has become quite familiar within our culture; however, men have access to a variety of classic as well as fashionforward styles today. Vests or waistcoats are often paired with tuxedos; however, depending upon the formality of the event you are attending and your preference, you may opt to partner your tuxedo with a decorative cummerbund in a shade complementary to your tuxedo and bowtie. T
he establishment is called Décor Interiors and Jewelry and after a simple stroll through the 20,000 foot showroom, one can’t help but feel somewhat awestruck by the precise, aesthetically pleasing use of color, lighting, accessories and perfect design. The beautifully illuminated jewelry cases complement each exquisite gem, bracelet, ring or earring. Each piece sparkles at every angle. This is more than a store. It is an artful display of the staff ’s expertise, passion and dedication as well as a reflection of the 86 year history in the furniture business. The team is led by President Joe Fredlich, descendant of the founder of Décor. Décor was founded in 1927, then known as White Front Furniture, on what is now Martin Luther King Drive (Easton Avenue). In the 1950s, it was taken over by

Harry, Morris, and Nate Fredlich who not only took over the company but also changed the name to Décor and the location to University City. Like his father, Nate Fredlich was an innovator and a pioneer with a sharp eye on the future. In 1966 when Chesterfield was still farm land, Nate used his intuition and decided to move his store to its present location at 13476 Olive Boulevard at North Woods Mill Road realizing the population would grow to the west. How did jewelry come into the picture? The story is that Nate would go to estate sales to buy furniture and at times
the only way he could get the items he wanted, he would have to buy the whole lot which included jewelry. He would sell furniture at his store and show his bag of jewelry that he had accumulated then ask his customers if they would be interested in purchasing of the collection. It was in 1982 that young Joe Fredlich, Nate’s son, started a jewelry case in the back of the building. Within five years, the jewelry business was a grand success and brought in more profits than the furniture portion of the store! Amongst the luxurious dazzling diamonds and carefully crafted custom made settings, stones and pearls, the fine estate jewelry is proudly displayed.to this day. Joe is truly dedicated to his business. After college, Joe received his Colored Stone and Diamond Grading Certificates from the G.I.A (Gemological Institute of America). He is happy with his work, friendly and extremely proud to be a part of the family legacy. Of the sixteen employees, seven have been there over 15 years, a testament to Décor. Joe will be the first to tip his cap to his staff: “They’re talented, professional and loyal. My staff are like family to me”. He has continued creating a pleasant work environment. Employees are more than happy to tell you that working in the family owned environment makes working

njoy everything in moderation, including moderation. Easier said than done when the season of excess is upon us. All of this excessive spending and socializing around the holidays tends to leave our wallets looking thinner, and our waistlines looking thicker come January 2nd, the day many of us are forced to slow down and notice that we've spent beyond our means and those killer skinny jeans that turned heads back in early November will no longer button.
You can't even blame it on the dryer, because you know you've barely had time to do laundry. The year is brand new, but many of us are left feeling worn out, tired, bloated, and depressed. But how is one expected to spend nearly two months taunted by endless quantities of rich, calorie-laden food and drink and not give in? How does one find time to go to the gym, when you barely have time to sleep between the demands of work, holiday shopping, visiting relatives, and a jam-packed social calendar? Surely it will all be ok because you plan to turn over a new leaf in the New Year. Sure, you vow to go to the gym every morning at 5:30, cut out all alcohol, dairy, and sugar and live on water, lean proteins and vegetables come January 2nd. That all sounds great...until Superbowl Sunday presents a whole new minefield of calorie bombs to navigate through. Old habits die hard, even in a new year. Now is the best time to arm yourself with a plan, 34

so maybe for once you won't have to resolve to lose the extra pounds that you gained over the holidays. Here are a few tips to help you maintain your weight through the holidays, so that you can begin the New Year looking and feeling just as fabulous as you did prior to Thanksgiving. 1. SET REALISTIC LIMITS Though it may seem daunting, it is not impossible to enjoy the holidays and keep your health in check at the same time, but doing so requires a proactive approach. Set realistic limits on what you will allow yourself to eat and drink prior to the party. If you know you won't be able to resist having at least a few bite-sized deserts, go ahead and plan to indulge, but just don't go overboard and shave a few calories dense off of your other meals to balance out your caloric intake, or try to squeeze in a workout at some point during the day of the event.
2. NEVER GO TO A PARTY ON AN EMPTY STOMACH. If you do, you will inevitably end up overindulging. Eat foods that are high in protein before you go. This can be as effortless as eating a protein bar or drinking a protein shake in your car on the way to a party or, if you have time to prepare a lean protein and some vegetables, go for it. 3. JUST SAY NO TO EGGNOG Contrary to popular belief, calories in alcohol do count. If you know you will end up drinking, limit yourself to two cocktails and stick to vodka or other clear liquors mixed with club soda or water and a twist of lemon or
lime. Stay away from Tonic, juices, and other sugary mixers, all of which will up the calorie count. If this sounds unpleasant, toss a small bottle of zerocalorie flavor enhancements into your purse. Add a few drops to your drink for instant fruity refreshment for only a fraction of the calories. I can almost guarantee that you won't be the only one who does it. You can also stick to 12 ounces of light beer or an 8-ounce glass of wine. A slice of orange or wedge of lime can add that wow factor to any light beer. Best of all these recommended drinks weigh in at 160 or fewer calories. 4. THERE'S AN APP FOR THAT Sign up for My Fitness Pal on your smartphone or tablet. It's a food journal that you keep right at your fingertips, with calorie counts and nutritional information for tens of thousands of foods and drinks. The app also allows you to set calorie goals based on factors such as your height, weight, and activity level. Enjoy the holidays and what they have to offer, and still slip right into those skinny jeans on January 2nd. UT

Lord and Taylor’s is by the New York Public Library on 42nd Street where you can visit the Empires State Building’s indoor lobby display, then head back over to Herald Square and Macy’s. No trip to New York is complete without seeing Radio City Music Hall’s famous dancing Rockettes. This year’s production celebrates the Rockettes’ 85th anniversary of performing in NYC by paying homage to the show’s costumes over the decades. Performances run through Dec 30th. Ticket prices are $46-250. Another great show for the family is Broadway’s “A Christmas Story, The Musical” appearing at the Lunt-Fontanne Theater. Watch the New York City Ballet do The NutCracker at the David H. WENDY VITALE - DÉCOR INTERIORS & JEWELRY Décor clients can customize bedding to make their dream bedroom a place of serenity and relaxation. Vitale said, “The bedding style should be chosen to show off your personality and taste, as well as bringing in the decorative theme of the room. Once a style has been chosen, the rest of the process can begin to take shape.” For her example, Vitale chose a glam modern styled bedroom that’s both sleek and contemporary. Vitale added, “Some people associate elegant with stuffy, so we wanted to demonstrate how an elegant bedroom set can be stylish as well as comfortable. Padded headboards are very popular right now. The bed’s crystal studded headboard is trendy yet sophisticated.” The room is a swirl of colors – creams, browns, and light green. “I used

ELLEN ROSS - THE CURTAIN EXCHANGE Ross said, “Custom bedding has become very important in design as clients love to create an entire room which is very peaceful and tranquil.” Ross chose a bedroom in rich hues suitable for the Holiday Season. The bed displays Italian-inspired patterns from Peacock Alley’s collection called Baroque Gold. Its damask design implies old-world heritage. Ross said, “Everything in this beautiful collection is comfortable. I especially love the attention to detail in the coverlets, duvets, bed scarves, shams and boudoir pillows. This bedroom displays an elegant blend of timeless tapestry prints with a clean, contemporary setting.” The bed is shown wrapped in the Gold collection paired with a textured matelasse coverlet and ginger colored linen shams. TEDDY KARL - THE GREAT COVER UP Karl's love for traditional classic design is reflected in his personal space. To create a peaceful mood, Karl used his favorite theme - blue and white. “I'm always inspired by color, pattern and textures. I love detail and enjoy layering fabrics and textures for a well put-together collected look.” Karl built his theme upon a toile design by Pepe' Penalver called Bucolica from Savel. The walls were papered with tone-on-tone, vined Thibaut wallpaper, showcasing his English plate collection to perfection. "I've been collecting Staffordshire pieces for quite a while now. It's a constantly changing collection." The pillows, drapes and custom upholstered headboard all picked up the toile design. The coverlet is a matelasse from Jane Wilner with a custom 12 inch monogram. Karl said, "My dream bedroom is a cozy and comfortable space. It has beautiful Chinese lamps and collectibles, all grounded by an antique Persian rug." To further personalize the setting, Karl needlepointed the bed’s feature pillow. UT UPTOWN MAGAZINE

he Christmas holidays bring memories of days long gone and of decorated trees, dinners, gift exchanges and precious time spent with family. Our experiences vary. Perhaps, your past holidays were spent at a flat in the city, an apartment, or house in the suburbs, on a ranch or by the sea. For many of us, the ideal Christmas would be spent in a picturesque, British-type manor with huge stone fireplaces, beautifully lit Christmas trees and room to celebrate with family and friends. Tom and Trish Zupon celebrate their traditions and love of family in a home exactly like this dream.

Even before you enter the house, the new and old classic English style front door, encased in solid brick and stucco and enveloped with contrasting, striking heavy dark timber gives promise to a cozy, cottage atmosphere inside. The outside is breathtaking and beautiful. Somehow, this mammoth sized structure still manages to emanate the feeling of a charming, quaint lodge in the Cotswold. In fact, the architectural style of the house is appropriately called “Cotswold Tudor”, with the unique features of steep arch gables and rounded arched doorways, brick, stone, or stucco outside walls and often with many small and irregularly shaped rooms. The Pennsylvanian slate roof is perfect befitting the design of the house. The couple bought the house in 2007 and researched the history. Woodson Kidder Woods, (b.1871 d. 1954) began
working for Ralston Purina in 1895 and by 1910 was a vice president and treasurer of the company. At the time, his family lived in Webster Groves where he attended the Presbyterian Church. It was circa 1914 when the house was built. His son, Woodson K Woods, Jr. was instrumental in organizing and opening the Presbyterian Church in Ladue in 1943. When moving into the house, the duo had plenty of work ahead of them. The house was in disarray. They took out the old radiators, had to make walls flush, replace the lighting and did the floors in Italian tile. One can only imagine the work involved as the house is 6,000 square feet, has 4 bedrooms, 5 bathrooms, not mention the other rooms such as the butler’s pantry, kitchen, sitting room, multi-media room and living room. The fruits of their labors are glorious. Each inch of the house is stunning and retains the original elegance. The use of color, texture, shapes, woodwork and art creates an impressive fluid flow when walking from one room and on into the next. The eclectic furniture throughout the house is carefully placed with the perfect accents and accessories. Trish has an innate instinct when choosing art or furniture or design which is both elegant and welcoming. The love and passion for tradition is evident everywhere, especially at Christmas. The extraordinary circular entrance hall is absolutely amazing. Introducing the theme of the house, the overwhelming sense of family surrounds you on all sides as photographs of a growing family adorn the luxurious creamy walls. The architecture is fascinating. circles is ingenious. The floor has a large checkerboard patterned mosaic circle, a feature which acknowledges Woodson Kidder Woods connection to Ralston Purina. In the center of the ceiling holds a luminescent chandelier and at the holidays, additional clear tear drops in the shape of ornaments and Christmas trees in soft amber and violet hues hang. Directly underneath, stands a circular table atop a circular rug. A three tiered dessert stand is loaded with bakery goods and sweets and if one looks closely, the top tier holds cookies that say “Happy Birthday Jesus” which remind visitors of the reason for their celebration. Surrounding the table in various directions are several doors, a stairway and opposite the front door entrance stands a magnificent Tudor style multi-paned rear door. Discovering where each door leads is an adventure and full of surprises! A closed door almost underneath the stairwell is a small restroom with the ceiling contoured to accommodate the spiral staircase above! The door to this room is black, heavy and thick and is made of many pieces of wood in order to fit the curving in the wall and in keeping with the flow. Behind another door is a fully stocked Prohibition Closet! Another room off the entrance hall is the dining room. This room also keeps the circular theme. A circular mirror looms over the table which is set with circular plates on gold 42

circular placemats. Red and gold tubular napkin rings match the red and gold English crackers that lay by the plate settings. These crackers are another one of the family traditions. A Christmas cracker is a paper tube, usually covered in Christmas wrapping that is twisted at both ends, similar to the way a Jolly Roger candy wrapping is shaped. When you twist the cracker (usually pulled by two people one on each end) a “bang” resounds and from inside the cracker spills a paper crown made of tissue, a small gift and a joke or message. One is expected to wear the crown throughout the dinner. Off the dining room is Trish’s favorite room where she can sit, relax and read with plenty of light from the windows which overlook the backyard area and pool. The entire room is bright with the book cases and furniture in white and the walls which are patterned with Roman lettering, bringing out the Italian side of family. Also connected to the dining room is the Butler’s Pantry

which leads into the spacious kitchen. Trish pointed out her truly delightfully enchanting tea pot collection. For seven years, au pairs from seven different countries stayed with the family. Gifts followed from Japan, Germany, Bali including tea pots. Trish has quite the collection. Her most recent purchase? Appropriately, her current favorite, a snowman teapot with a cardinal on the lid as a tribute to this year’s National League Champions! Also, a remarkable piece is the artistic, colorful mosaic round table. During the holidays, the most important room is the Living
Room. It is here that the main Christmas tree stands where the family gathers and the traditions are honored. On Christmas Eve, someone is Santa, a talent show is performed by the children, carols are sung on the piano and the scrolls are given. The children’s grandfather would draw on parchment, decorate it with drawings and cartoons, sometimes of family members, roll them into scrolls and give them to his family. The family member would read the scroll aloud and thus would find out what gift they were to receive by the writings on the scroll. The end of the Christmas Eve celebration was a visit to midnight mass. Christmas Day is celebrated all day long with a brunch and dinner and a birthday cake with angels on it decorated and made for the birthday of Jesus. Outside, the two old style lanterns are lit on each side of the front door and the Christmas wreath peaks through the glass panes from inside. This beautiful, traditional, wonderful house truly reflects the love of Christmas traditions and the holiday spirit within. UT UPTOWN MAGAZINE

he holidays bring family and friends together for celebrations with great food and libations. For many hosts, choosing the right wines to go with what foods can be confusing. Forget that old rule, red goes with dark meat and white with white. Today's wine selections offer a variety of whites and reds to complement every flavor from savory to sweet. Uptown asked some local wine merchants for advice on what they’d serve with what. Thanksgiving means turkey and by itself it’s easy to serve a good wine. It’s all those side dishes that challenge the taste buds. Stuffing, cranberries, sweet potatoes, roasted veggies, and rich sauces have to be considered when deciding on wine pairings. For starters, sparkling wines and champagne go with just about everything. Their acidity serves as a palate-cleanser between spicy flavors. Sparklers can begin the meal with a toast, and later pair well with sweeter style side dishes. Danny Fafoglia of The Wine Merchant, Ltd suggested sparkling wines that go with the whole meal: NV Segura Viudas Brut Cava $7.99, NV Segura Viudas Brut Rose $9.99, NV Clavelin Brut - Comte Cremant du Jura Chardonnay Tete de Cuvee Le Vernois, France $18.99, and NV Aubry Champagne Brut Premier cru Jouy-Les-Reims, France $39.99. COOKIES: 1 2/3 cups all-purpose flour 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon baking powder 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 Tablespoon ground cinnamon 2 teaspoons ground ginger 1 teaspoon ground cloves 1 cup tightly packed dark brown sugar 1/2 cup canola oil 1 cup pumpkin puree 2 large eggs 1 1/2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
FILLING: 3 cups confectioners’ sugar 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened 8 ounces cream cheese, softened 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
DIRECTIONS: The holidays are upon us with what feels like one continuous party and eat fest from Halloween through New Year’s. In fact, months prior I gear up, watching my intake so when the time arrives, I can savor the smorgasbord of culinary delights. Heaven forbid I turn something down – yet I must, to avoid waistband strangulation! During this time I cook up a storm, and bake goodies to gift and share with everyone. Of my favorites are Mini Pumpkin Whoopie Pies. These cake-like sandwich cookies are filled with a luscious, velvety, cream cheese filling – they’re like gourmet Oreo’s, only Pumpkin flavored. You might enjoy separating the sandwich and eating the filling, but I prefer licking the cream that oozes out the sides, then proceed to devour every morsel of this mini sandwiched orb. Ooh it’s so good! Try these for the upcoming holidays; I’m certain they’ll be adored by all! 52

1.Cookies: Preheat oven to 350F degrees. Line several baking sheets with parchment paper. 2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together flour, salt, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, ginger and cloves. Set aside. 3. In another bowl using an electric mixer, whisk brown sugar, and oil until combined. Add and incorporate pumpkin puree, eggs and vanilla. Gradually add flour mixture to wet ingredients until blended. Do not over mix. 4. Using a mini ice cream scoop or heaping teaspoon, drop pumpkin batter onto parchment lined baking sheets, 1-inch apart. Bake approximately 10-13 minutes or until cookies start to crack on top, and are springy to the touch. Let cool completely on pan. 5. Filling: In a mixing bowl, beat cream cheese and vanilla until smooth and creamy. Scrape down sides then add pieces of butter, blending until smooth. On low speed add powdered sugar, ½ cup at a time, beating until light and fluffy. (Filling can be made a day in advance. Cover and refrigerate; let stand at room temperature to soften before using.) 6. Assembling the Whoopie Pies: Transfer cream cheese filling to a disposable pastry bag or Ziploc Baggie. Push filling towards one end, releasing air from bag, twist and snip one corner. Once cookies have cooled completely, pipe, by squeezing a large dollop of filling on the flat side of half the cookies. Sandwich with remaining cookies, pressing gently so filling spreads to the edges. Transfer to prepared platter and cover with plastic wrap. Refrigerate cookies 30 minutes prior to serving or up to 3 days.

azz vocalist Denise Thimes wows worldwide audiences with her talent, style and poised stage presence. St. Louis is lucky to call her our own. She’s a force to behold, able to fill up any venue with her smooth as silk voice. Thimes has often been compared to Ella Fitzgerald, Nancy Wilson, Dianne Reeves, and Carmen McCrae.
Thimes has been singing as long as she remembers. She studied music at Meramec Community College, was a voice major at Spelman College, and is an honorary member of the Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc.. “I always wanted to be a singer. But I never thought I’d be a jazz singer,” said Thimes. She began her professional career in 1986. “After college graduation, I started doing clubs like Walter Mitty's and Dantes Down the Hatch in Atlanta.” Her career took off, as she performed all over the world. . Whether headlining at New York’s historic Blue Note Jazz Club, conquering the national jazz festival scene, or sharing the stage with legendary singers, Thimes always steals the show. In June 2007, Thimes opened for Tony Bennett at the Chase Park Plaza’s Khorassan Room. An accomplished actress as well, Thimes has toured with critically acclaimed productions including several August Wilson plays and musicals like Eubie and The Wiz. She is an eight time recipient of the St. Louis Black Repertory Woodie Award for both musicals and drama. In 2011, The Black Rep showcased her in Black Pearl Sings!. Thimes lists her biggest influences as Marlena Shaw, Carmen McCrae, and above all, her parents - the late Mildred Thimes and St. Louis radio legend Lou "Fatha" Thimes. “My brother, Lou Thimes Jr. followed in my father's footsteps on radio." Today Thimes remains an inspirational and admired artist. When Queen Elizabeth II made her U.S. visit in May 2007, she personally selected Thimes as the entertainment for her dinner gala at the White House. Thimes recalled the event, “I was conversing with Judge Clarence Thomas. Little
did I know that we were in the receiving line. I thought we were simply waiting to be seated when suddenly, there they were - the Queen, Prince Philip, President Bush and Laura Bush. I was a little shocked, and had to pull it all together immediately. The Queen was very personable, very excited to meet me and even mentioned that she had heard my CD. The Queen then requested that I sing ‘Route 66’ that evening. What an honor.” Thimes produces two St. Louis concerts each year, “In 2014 we’ll be celebrating our 18th annual Mother's Day concert at The Sheldon featuring me and musicians recruited from all over the globe.” The second concert is more personal; named for her mother who died from pancreatic cancer. The Mildred Thimes Foundation 9th Annual Benefit Concert for Pancreatic Cancer will be held at The Sheldon on November 7, presenting A Musical Tribute to Phyllis Hyman. Thimes donates her talent to other charitable organizations like Beyond Housing which fosters home ownership and bettering communities. Its recent fundraiser, Divas for a Cause at The Sheldon, featured Thimes with Erin Bode and Dianne Reeves. Let’s Start is a non-profit that supports recovery of formerly incarcerated women and their children. Thimes will sing with the American Chamber Chorale for two performances next March, benefitting Let’s Start. Thimes is also involved in fund raising for Shalom House which helps homeless women. “These three charities are my passion and very close to my heart. Several new fabulous restaurants have opened recently adding more flavors to the ever-expanding St. Louis restuarant scene. The Libertine (7927 Forsythe, Clayton, 314-862-2999, thelibertinestl.com) combines food and drink artistry with a neighborhood sensibility. Cocktails are made completely from scratch and bear intriguing names like “Elvis Costello Lost in Missouri”. If that’s not tantalizing enough come in for the golden tomato sorbet, crispy pig tails, or octopus steamed buns. Or maybe you just want a buger or fried chicken - they have that too. For a couple other dining options try Treehouse Vegetarian Restaurant (3177 S.
