From the time she was a child, Ellen Ross was always interested in business. Pain, Pain, Go Away!

D
id you know that it is possible to experience pain relief through insertion and manipulation of extremely fine flexible needles? Increasing numbers of people are discovering the analgesic, energizing, and relaxing effects of the ancient Chinese practice of Acupuncture.
Acupuncture is the insertion of fine needles along 14 circulatory pathways called meridians that run throughout the body. Although it may sound painful, those who have experienced the therapeutic practice will indicate just the opposite. Some report feeling more energized following treatments, while others report a deep relaxing sensation. In Eastern medicine, practitioners believe that inserting needles to the correct depth along the 14 meridians can provide relief from painful symptoms that accompany a plethora of maladies. The needles are believed to stimulate nerve, muscle, and connective tissue throughout the body, which leads to increased Endorphin (the body’s natural painkiller) activity and blood flow. While there is still not enough medical evidence at present to prove the benefits of Acupuncture, it is increasingly common for doctors to recommend Acupuncture as a complimentary treatment for patients to use in conjunction with other methods of pain relief. In Eastern medical practices, the color, shape, and coating of your tongue are all believed to indicate energy patterns in the body. This information is helpful to Acupuncturists when it comes to diagnosing areas of the body where Acupuncture could be beneficial. Diners choose from a list of mouthwatering calzones with dipping sauce on the side and a variety of salads all made in-house with fresh ingredients provided by local suppliers. Hand tossed dough, salad dressings, bastes and dipping sauces are made on the premises daily. With fresh and modern décor and a fast-casual breakfast and lunch concept, Whitebox Eatery opened in August adjacent to the Ritz-Carlton at 176 Carondelet Plaza. This $16 million CENTENE BUILDING renovation project at 26 N. Meramec includes a restaurant, 106 rooms and 25 suites and represents Clayton’s fifth hotel property. In addition to Chicago, Denver, Milwaukee, Naples and Palm Beach, Hindman Auctioneers found that a Clayton location not only fulfilled the company’s real estate requirements, the city’s elegant style suited the Hindman concept. The nationally recognized fine art auction house chose its 32 N. Brentwood Boulevard address because Clayton is a “. . . sophisticated market filled with important collectors, museums and other institutions.” It’s a good fit for Hindman and for Clayton. CVS Pharmacy found the intersection of Clayton Road and Brentwood Boulevard an ideal location. The two-story structure at 8101 Clayton Road was renovated and, now this former Linens ’n Things location, is where customers get quick access to their pharmacy needs. Rounding out the city’s impressive list of amenities are its cultural elements. On September 5, 6 and 7, throngs of art 22

he term Vogue denotes fashion, versatile sophistication and glamour. In regard to interior design, it conjures up images of sumptuous residences. Be it living or dining rooms, kitchens or baths, classy spaces with the Vogue look encompass all that is refined and elegant. High style like this can be found in Manhattan penthouses, Hollywood mansions, or Miami deco styled homes. But these cosmopolitan interiors can be created right here in St. Louis. How can you imbue your abode with the Vogue look? upholstered chairs. Patterned cushions on the sofa along with silver and glass objets d’art, modern lamps, an ornate mirror and grandfather clock, bring the entire look together. For a more regal look, we go to the Central West End home of Kevin and Patti Short. Are we in Downton Abbey? Not really, but this gorgeous mansion could very well serve as a theatrical backdrop. The ‘ladies sitting room’ (pictured) would easily welcome royalty! Here Wedgwood blue is the dominant color. Classic sofas in creamy white and striped side chairs flank a mantel and mirror with a decorative scroll design. A Tiffany painted ceiling commissioned for the house over a hundred years ago tops this exquisite room. Drapery is perhaps the most important accent in any room. It frames the entire scene. Pictured here is a splendid example of modern elegance.

hen you decorate your home with fine antiques, you’ll create remarkable rooms that have a timeless sense of style, subtle sophistication and understated elegance.
Imagine how stately your den or library would look with an antique painting hanging over the fireplace mantel. A graceful antique black lacquered and gilded English Regency tray table can give definition and character to your living room. Your dining room will look especially elegant with a set of antique hand-carved Chippendale chairs. An antique English chest can become the focal point of your living room. Or perhaps you’d like to furnish your bedroom with an antique Biedermeier day bed to create a romantic look from a bygone era. Whatever antique furnishings that you choose, the decorating possibilities are endless. If you like classic simplicity, we suggest that you decorate your home with Biedermeier, a distinctive style of antique furniture that’s often highlighted with decorative black accents. Biedermeier furniture, handcrafted with light-colored wood such as cherry, ash and oak, was made from 1815 to 1848 in Germany, Austria and Scandinavia. Biedermeier furniture owes its simple design to Georgian furniture of the 19th century. The Neo-Classical Biedermeier furniture style was also a simplified interpretation of the influential French Empire style of Napoleon. For a more formal and ornate decorating style, you might want to consider antique French Empire furniture, which was made from about 1804 to 1814 during the reign of Napoleon. French Empire furniture, a revival of Greek, Roman and Egyptian motifs, is a Neo-Classical style that was often adorned with decorative gilded bronze embellishments called Ormolou. We especially like the decorative style of English Regency furniture, which was made in the later decades of the Georgian period from about 1800 to 1830. English Regency furniture, which represents Neo-Classical design, has elaborate embellishments and extravagant styling such as scroll backs and turned legs. Black lacquer and gilt epitomize English Regency furniture, which is classical and fanciful in its superb 32

design. English Regency furniture became so popular that Americans designed their own version known as American Federal furniture which lasted for a few decades. Of all the iconic names associated with fine antique furniture, Chippendale furniture is the probably the most well-known. The Chippendale furniture style dominated English and American furniture until the 1770s. Known by its ornate carvings, the Chippendale furniture style

was created by Thomas Chippendale, an 18th century English cabinet maker. The graceful hand-carved legs of Chippendale furniture have different designs such as the claw and ball, Queen Anne-style cabriole, late Chippendale, the club, the spade and the lion’s paw. Chippendale furniture was influenced by English, Gothic and Chinese furniture styles. The 18th century Roccoco or Late Baroque cultural movement also influenced Chippendale’s furniture designs. By the mid-18th century, the Neo-Classical movement
began and continued into the 19th century, influencing many styles of antique furniture. If you prefer to decorate your home with formal antique furniture that’s fanciful and very ornate, we think that you’ll admire antique Chinoiserie furniture, which is Chinese-themed. Antique Chinoiserie furniture, made in Europe during the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, was often lacquered in black or red paint and featured graceful, idyllic Chinese motifs painted in gold. Antique Chinoiserie furniture, which continues to be a very popular antique style for interior design, can command high prices. 1 THE ELEGANCE

pen the front door to the Lewis home and you will immediately enter a world of explicit welldefined symmetry and elegance. The grand white staircase with oak wood handrails, white balusters and newels with the oak steps covered with exquisite majestic carpeting, welcome you to the home of the Lewis family. The ambiance is reminiscent of a gracious, aristocratic manor from days gone by.

Susan has a history of living in French Country style homes and after moving to Ladue, fell in love with the Georgian genre of architecture. Through the six years of owning the home, she has worked the garden into a showpiece and added her own expertise in design to the house. Extremely well-read and knowledgeable about the dĂŠcor, the idiosyncrasies and history of Georgian design, she was kind enough to share some very interesting facts. 34

The first four British monarchs of the House of Hanover, conveniently namely George I, George II, George the III, and George IV, reigned from 1714 to 1830. The era begat an architectural style taken from the Italian Renaissance and was based on the designs of classic Roman structures. This style is known as Georgian architecture. As a child of Britain, Georgian was the dominant style for domestic homes in the United States from 1700 to

6 5 1780. Characteristics include a two story house with the front entry in the center of the home. Seeing an impressive large staircase upon entering created a feeling of grandeur and wealth and was the perfect setting where visitors could wait and be received into a parlor. Susan’s two story foyer is absolutely awe-inspiring with the center staircase and a hallway on either side leading to the rest of the lower level. Another trait of Georgian architecture is the precise sizes of the rooms. On the upper level every bedroom suite is the same size and features an en-suite bathroom. Susan’s daughter Amanda and son, Alec, couldn’t argue who could have the bigger bedroom suite! High ceilings are also a trait of the Georgian style. The Lewis home hails a twenty-five foot ceiling in the great room, ten foot tall showers and eight foot tall doors! Most the rooms have coffer ceilings, which give an “Old English” touch with the influence originally from the stone coffers in ancient Greece. A coffer ceiling is one which consists of sunken panels of either squares, rectangles or octagons and

gives a room depth and structure. This 5 bedroom, 4.5 bath house is 5, 652 square feet of living space. The main level has all hardwood oak floors with the exception of the master bath and closet. To the left of the entry way is the dining room. Susan says she looks at each room like a blank canvas then adds color using oriental rugs, oil paintings, silk florals and rich upholstery. The effect is polished, dignified and eloquent. All of the curtains throughout the house, each set enhancing the colors and atmosphere of the rooms with rich silk fabric, are from the Curtain Exchange in Clayton. The sparkling crystal chandelier hangs elegantly over the warm mahogany dining table that expands to comfortably seat ten guests. The hand carved wood candlesticks are souvenirs from the south of France and accentuate the stately, yet simple, tableau of the room. From the dining room, one enters what is traditionally referred to as the butler’s pantry. However, the Lewis family calls the room their petite French cafe, which is a name much UPTOWN MAGAZINE

more fitting with dĂŠcor consisting of black cabinets, cream granite counter tops, a framed display of wine labels from travels to Burgundy, a wine cooler, an espresso machine and of course a bistro set. The kitchen has an abundance of painted wood cabinetry which contrasts well with the black granite counter tops and mahogany colored glass-tiled backsplash but my personal favorite feature in the kitchen is the top lighted cabinets with glassware artfully displayed. Off the kitchen is the large bay breakfast area which overlooks a cascading waterfall that spills into a stone lined brook meandering 25 feet to a pond filled with colorful blooming lily pads. foliage and fauna and as a sensational backdrop when viewing the water feature from any of the windows along the backside of the house. The design of this backyard is representative of the informal English gardens found in many Georgian estates. The open Great Room, brightened with floor to ceiling doors and windows, is where the majority of guests are entertained. Over the years, many notable dignitaries, including ambassadors, politicians and even a European Prince, have either made speeches here or simply relaxed and enjoyed this room’s amenities and ambiance. The master suite opens onto the patio and features a magnificent four poster bed. The rich golden brown tones in the upholstery contrast handsomely with the dark wood and

3 2 once again, the accessories in the room give eloquence and superb taste to the room. With wall mirrors accentuating the size, the master bathroom seems enormous. The large marble tub is framed by two great white columns. In the center of the room is a dark Persian rug under an oval tufted silk ottoman, elegantly placed. The marble floors are accented by the dark wood cabinetry making the room luxurious and enticing. The ten foot tall walk-in marble shower is absolutely breath-taking.

The true beauty of the house is the family and friends who have filled it with memories. That wonderful staircase, the center of their home, sentimentally represents the center stage of many meaningful events. Many homecoming, prom and graduation celebrations commenced with a group photo session on that staircase. Susan fondly recalls the “paparazzi� of parents snapping photographs of their formally dressed children as they posed happily. This lovely Georgian house is the home of an equally lovely family. n between Germany and Poland, the Czech Republic is home to one of the most romantic, beautiful cities in Europe, called Prague. With golden steeples and spires on centuries old Renaissance, Gothic and Baroque cathedrals and monasteries, it is no wonder that some of our greatest composers and musicians were inspired by this magical city. Today, with a metropolitan population of 2 million, Prague is the fourteenth largest city in the European Union and is the cultural, economic and political center of Central Europe along with being the historical capital of Bohemia. In 1848, many Bohemians (Czechs) began arriving in St. Louis in 1848 and settled in the area of St. Louis which was then called Frenchtown, later Bohemian Hill and today Soulard! What better place to trace your family genealogy! This city is a mix of old and new as Prague is considered not only a popular tourist destination but a modern business city as well. Many multinational and English speaking companies bring in young citizens from other countries, including the US. This 1,100-year old city is home to Prague Castle, the Charles Bridge, and the Old Town Square, more

than 10 world-class museums, universities, theatres and wonderful, historical exhibits as well as the Prague Zoo. Don’t forget to try some of the famous Czech beers! The transportation system is easy to use with trams, buses, taxis and the metro. Most passengers travel on tram No. 22, which travels to many of the more popular sites. Prague is a great walking city if you are a walker and, in fact, public buses do not go into the historic districts to prevent air and noise pollution. Bikes are convenient modes of transportation and appear everywhere. Where do you start? Old Town Square, right in the heart of Prague, hosts buildings as old as the 13th century. Cafes and restaurants, the fascinating Astronomical Clock, Old Town Hall and the Estates Theater are all here with winding cobblestoned streets (wear walking shoes) that lead you to touristy sites, beer and food! Don’t forget to hear the Glockenspiel! Food is pricy in the Old Town Square and is almost always crowded so a good time to visit is early morning. Speaking of food, you will see a blend of German food,

Don’t miss walking across the Charles Bridge which crosses the Vitava River. Since the bridge does not allow cars, street musicians, vendors and painters are here and is reminiscent of Paris. The dramatic view of the older part of the city which includes Prague Castle is absolutely breathtaking. According to the Guinness World Records, Prague Castle is the largest ancient castle complex in the world. Founded in 880, the property gained palaces and building throughout its history and varying architectural styles appeared through the centuries. The President of the Czech Republic has offices here and you can see the changing of the guard. The
Royal Gardens, Riding School, St Vitus Cathedral are just a few of the sites to see in this glorious setting. Among the many impressive beautiful buildings you may find the John Lennon Wall which began as a tribute and grew to be more of a political poetic statement with an interesting history and path of expression through graffiti. Check out the St. Vitus Cathedral, the Palace Gardens, the Church of St. Nickolas and the Jewish Quarter. The official language of the Czech Republic is Czech. Although Czech Republic is part of the European Union, many establishments will only take the Czech koruna (Crown). Check before you buy and beware of the exchange rate! Cars drive on the right and electricity is Europe’s 230 V, 50 Hz. Prague has more than 4.4 million international visitors and when looking on almost any list, Prague is one of the top 10 most popular destinations in Europe, ranked fifth in Tripadvisor’s 2014 World List of Best Destinations. lton John described country comfort as “an old fashioned feeling, fully grown” and no one puts it to practice better than Jeff and Chris Comotto, proprietors of the newly renovated “The Inn at Defiance.” Jeff, a recently retired Anheuser-Busch executive and Chris, a former school teacher, have lovingly restored the inn keeping its country flavor while bringing it into the 21st century.
Jeff and Chris transformed many of the spaces, created three new bathrooms, installed new flooring, paint, and added all new, or antique, furniture. Each of the four bedrooms has it’s own private bath as well as a private outdoor entry and separate outdoor porch space. The rooms, with regionally-appropriate names like Reisling’s Retreat, are graciously appointed with impeccable attention to detail incuding hypo-allergenic sheets, spa robe and slippers, hair dryer and eco-green towels. Even though you may be trying to get away from it all, Jeff is sypathetic to fellow Mizzou fans needing to catch a critical game, so all rooms boast free WiFi and smart TVs which allow you to check your facebook page, if you must, or log in to your own Netflix account. 40

Warming up for Fall Fall is my favorite time of year when the leaves change their color from green to red, orange and yellow. I relish taking long drives in the country, the scenery is breathtaking. Although the trees haven’t reached their peak yet, it’s coming - soon! With cooler weather approaching my family craves hearty soups & stews. A favorite is Chicken Tortilla Soup – stocked with vegetables, shredded chicken and tortillas all in a flavorful tomato broth with a touch of spice. There’s a restaurant in Crested Butte, Colorado called The Last Steep Bar & Grill that makes a mean Chicken Tortilla Soup. When I tried their recipe for my family it was such a hit, they kept going back for seconds, and thirds, so I decided to share it with you. This recipe serves 10-12 people, but you can easily cut the ingredients in half, if preferred. If you’re a fan of Chicken Tortilla Soup this recipe won’t disappoint you. Although it calls for a number of ingredients it’s quick to put together. Don’t be fooled by the Cholula sauce or Chipotle, it wasn’t too spicy at all – in fact, it was perfect! This tortilla soup tastes so authentic and it’s ideal for a crowd. To insure a quick and easy assembly without errors, I recommend to mise en place all the ingredients. Mise en Place means “everything in place,” and ready to go before you begin cooking. Everything means, reading the recipe at least once or twice before starting; having all equipment and tools out, tested, and ready to go. It also means setting out all ingredients while ensuring vegetables are sliced, diced, julienned or otherwise cut according to the recipe. While you might feel this step unnecessary, it’s a good habit to get into, creating a smooth and stress free method for carrying out recipes. Watch the Food Network, and you’ll see, every chef makes sure to mise en place. I hope you try this Chicken Tortilla Soup, it’s sure to become a favorite in your home too!
• 1/2 yellow onion, diced • 1/4 green bell pepper, diced • 2 Tbsp. green chili, diced • 2 Tbsp. jarred roasted red peppers, diced • 1 1/2 tomatoes, diced • 1 Tbsp. garlic, minced • 1/2 cup mushrooms, sliced (optional) • 1 quart (32 oz.) tomato sauce • 1 gallon (128 oz.) chicken stock • 1 gallon water mixed with 4 oz. chicken base • 1/4 cilantro bunch, chopped • 1/4 lime, juiced • 2 Tbsp. Cholula sauce • 1/8 cup corn (I used frozen) • 1 Tbsp. chipotle powder • 3-4 cups chicken, cooked and pulled (I used Roasted Chicken from the market) • Salt and pepper to taste • 2 cups tortilla chips, plus extra for garnish
DIRECTIONS: 1. In a large pot with a small amount of oil, sauté onions, peppers, chili, tomatoes, garlic and mushrooms. Add remaining ingredients, including tortilla chips. Boil and adjust seasoning with salt and pepper. 2. Garnish with chopped cilantro, tortilla chips, sour cream and grated cheddar.

he amazing Zoe Vonder Haar can do it all – sing, dance, and wow, can she act! Whenever you see Zoe's name listed in a cast, you're assured a special theatrical treat.
In 2013 she won critical acclaim for her engaging portrayal of Texas housewife, Louise Seger, in the STAGES St. Louis smash hit Always…Patsy Cline. The production was such a huge hit, that STAGES reprised it this summer at Westport Playhouse. On her role as Louise, Zoe remarked, “I love Westport’s intimate stage which adds a whole new dimension to the storytelling. It allows the show to be fresh every night, and our audiences love it there too. I think they enjoy feeling as if they were sitting in Louise’s kitchen sharing a conversation with her.” Zoe is a familiar face to local theater goers. This versatile actress can take on a myriad of memorable character roles with ease, be it musical comedy or drama. A favorite with local audiences, she always gives her best in every role she takes. Musical talent runs in her family. Zoe’s late father Phil Vonder Haar played saxophone and was a major influence during her childhood. She started dance at age three, and at seven she began acting through the Webster Groves Theatre Guild. “I did as many shows as I could all through high school at my alma mater Nerinx Hall and the boys’ Catholic schools. I was involved with a theater group called Playmakers that performed in Kirkwood Park. That’s where I met Michael Hamilton (Stages Artistic Director)! My sister Tracy was a choreographer and I auditioned for shows she did. I’d want to be in dancing chorus and come home disappointed with a role! Ah youth! My first theatrical paying job was in the Palace Theater at Six Flags when the park first opened! I never attended college, but became a dance instructor after high school.” Zoe was cast in a production of Hair that played Kiel Opera House, and later toured in A Chorus Line, getting to work with Michael Bennett, for 2 ½ years before returning to St. Louis to start a family. Since the early 90’s she has performed in over 100 productions.
A resident actress at STAGES St. Louis, Zoe also performs regularly at The Muny and The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis. Throughout the year, she performs as a member of “The American Musical,” part of the educational programs at the Sheldon Concert Hall. Come December she’ll add a new holiday program entitled “Winter Wonderland”, part of The Sheldon’s educational and coffee concert series. Zoe’s love for theater arts extends to teaching. In between acting jobs, she teaches dance classes at Nerinx, choreographs at several St. Louis schools and directs for Stages Academy’s offsite program. She was privileged to receive the first Kevin Kline Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Musical for her role of Dolly Levi in Hello Dolly, and was again nominated for her roles of Ms. Pennywise in Urinetown, the Musical, and Mrs. Higgins in My Fair Lady. In 2013 Zoe won both the Post Dispatch “Judy” Award and the St. Louis Theater Circle Award for Best Actress. She commented, “I believe these local awards are great assets in helping to keep theater arts in the forefront of the St. Louis public. It's an honor to have received them for my role as Louise.” Asked about her favorite roles, Zoe replied, “Obviously Louise is now one of my favorites. I think it’s the first role I’ve done where the storytelling involves audience participation. I've been blessed with a "leading lady trifecta" - Mama Rose in Gypsy, Dolly in Hello Dolly and Auntie Mame in Mame. I absolutely loved performing Cassie in A Chorus Line. Madame Armfeldt in A Little Night Music, Jeanette in The Full Monty, Katy in Meet Me in St. Louis, Old Woman in Sunday in the Park with George are more favorites. There truly are too many to mention. I just so love performing.” And St. Louis audiences enjoy seeing her do just that. Always...Patsy Cline will return to the Westport Playhouse September 18 through October 12. UT UPTOWN MAGAZINE
