The right accessory can make or break your perfect outfit. Not enough and the look is too plain. Or worse, too much and suddenly it’s over the top. Thankfully, during the holiday season, anything goes! This is the ideal time of year to add a little more bling that usual or try out a new fashion trend. THE
Busy Woman’s WORKOUT
As the holidays near, time for exercise can be harder and harder to find. With all the parties to attend, shopping, and cooking for company, it can be hard to find time to exercise. We find ourselves stuck between a rock and a hard place: less time to exercise, but still wanting to reach our goals. Have no fear this holiday season, the Busy Woman’s Workout is here.
THIS CIRCUIT STYLE WORKOUT is designed to help you to maximize the little time that you have. Circuit style workouts give you the benefits of both cardiovascular and strength exercise by combining the two types of exercise. In this circuit , you will complete a strength move (or two) followed by a cardiovascular move with little rest in between. This allows you to burn more calories in a shorter amount of time — the perfect combination for a busy woman like yourself! In addition, circuit training helps you to build lean muscle, giving you a more toned look than if you did cardiovascular exercise alone. Since this is a total body workout, you should plan to complete this workout 3 days per week. Be sure to give yourself at least one day of rest in between sessions, however, as this is a total body workout. This will allow your muscles to recover and repair so you are ready for your next workout! If you happen to have some additional time on your off day, you can certainly add cardio. High intensity interval training (HIIT) is a great way to maximize your cardio benefits in minimal time — more on that program later! The workout itself should take you anywhere from 30-45 minutes depending on how much rest you give yourself in between exercises. To maximize your benefits, however, you want to keep the rest time minimal—only take as much time as you need to recover enough to complete the next exercise with proper form. Your heart rate will remain elevated

during circuit training; it should feel challenging while you're completing the exercises. Another important consideration is ensuring your form is correct. Select a weight that challenges your muscles, but still allows you to keep proper form when completing the exercises. Some of the most common mistakes in form that I see are raised shoulders when completing upper body exercises (think about how you look when you shrug your shoulders toward your ears) and allowing your knees to collapse in toward one another when completing leg exercises. As much as possible, try to keep your knee in line with where your second and third toes are so you have a straight line running through the middle of your foot to your knee. Keeping your shoulders pulled down and back during all upper body movements will help you to avoid shrugging your shoulders as well. These dysfunctional movement patterns can lead to injury over time if you are not cautious to avoid them! I hope you enjoy these workouts for the busy woman! It is a great way for you to stay active and reach your goals even when you are short on time. Be sure that you are giving your body the appropriate amounts of rest (both in between exercises and after an exercise session), using an appropriate weight and always using proper form! And always remember…it is not always about working harder, it’s about working smarter! UT
CIRCUIT PROGRAM Complete 2-3 sets of this circuit program. For repetitions, you can time each exercise (complete each exercise for 30-60 seconds before moving on to the next exercise) or you can complete 10-15 repetitions of each exercise. Before completing your second set, give yourself about a 60 second rest. 1. Dumbbell squat 2. Jumping Jacks 3. Chest press 4. Mountain climbers 5. Bent over row 6. High knees 7. Reverse lunge 8. Plank jacks 9. Overhead press 10. Skaters HIIT PROGRAM Beginner program • 5 minute warm up • 30 second sprint • 3 minute recovery (slow your pace to allow your heart rate to drop) • 30 second sprint • 3 minute recovery • 30 second sprint • 3 minute recovery • 10 minute cool down Intermediate HIIT Program • 5 minute warm up • 30 second sprint • 1-2 minute recovery • Repeat the sprint and recovery intervals 4-5 times • 5-10 minute cool down Advanced HIIT Program • 5 minute warm up • 1 minute sprint • 1-2 minute recovery • Repeat the sprint and recovery intervals 6 or more times • 5-10 minute cool down

Elegant Interiors FIVE EASY WAYS TO CREATE

Uptown asked five local design experts for their ideas on what elegant elements create luxurious interiors.

ALSPAUGH KITCHEN & BATH Bathroom elegance is all about classic lines and pampering touches like a heated floor, quality towels, and a lighted magnifying mirror. Here, less is more – avoid counter clutter with customized organization drawers for holding makeup, hair dryer and curling irons. More convenience comes with a well-designed shower featuring multiple shower heads, body sprays, steam capability, a seat and multiple shower recesses. Add a freestanding soaking tub and your bath couldn’t be more luxurious. Lighting is also key to an elegant ambience. Install a sparkling chandelier and sconces with dimmers for a candlelight effect. Walls and cabinets in white or soft, warm colors exude elegance. Marble floors and countertops are a must. Classic cabinetry should have furniture-like details of decorative legs or curved doors. A floating vanity for milady will make you feel like a star. Of course, elegance always requires uniquely framed mirrors. They are the artwork in your bath. Be sure to incorporate cabinet hardware and sculpturally shaped faucets done in finishes of brushed bronze, gold and nickel. www.glenalspaughkitchens.com
ENCORE CONSIGNMENT GALLERY Fine pieces of furniture are the bones of an elegant room. Pictured here is a festive dining room set for the holidays. The lighted china cabinet, polished dining table and ornately carved dining chairs combine to offer the perfect backdrop for traditional red and green decorations – complete with a sparkling tree, wreaths and fresh amaryllis. A whimsical nutcracker adorns the fireplace. Finally, all is reflected in three gorgeously gilded mirrors. www.encorestl.net

GARDEN PARTY AND DAVID Using things you already have is the easy way to elegance. This beautiful tablescape demonstrates how to do it. Decorating for each season or holiday is done by re-purposing objects found around the house. Pictured are linens and chargers from the owner’s collection. Various shades of green are mixed with trendy plaids, silver, white and brown. The table itself is a side table from the shop. The florals are greens from the garden mixed with berries and some artificial pine. Added are small evergreen plants, artificial balls and real greenery. The table can easily be changed out for different seasons, simply by introducing new colors. This dining room table presents a moveable feast all year long. www.gardenpartyanddavid.com

THE CURTAIN EXCHANGE Window curtains easily elevate a room’s elegance. Besides adding pattern, drapes blend in with the color scheme of a room. They ultimately make the biggest difference in any room. Then there’s the factor of budget limitations. Curtains are really far more cost-effective than you think. Designers at The Curtain Exchange have the ability to create very special drapery for their customers. They are experts in working within any budget from large to small. The drapes shown here were custom made. This oneof-a-kind fabric is hand sewn crewel from India. Each stitch was done on gold netting. Then it was overlaid on a light color gold silk, allowing the beautiful crewel work to stand out. They were bump and black-out interlined, making them very full and sumptuous. www.thecurtainexchange.com
JON PAUL DESIGNS One of the easiest ways to glamorize any room is with the right lighting. Chandeliers dripping with crystals scream elegance. They can be installed anywhere – living and dining rooms, kitchen, and even the bath! Seen here is a dazzling hand cut crystal chandelier over an elegant dining room setting. Its classic empire style shouts sophistication and elegance. Fine furniture like the dining table, chairs and buffet are perfect backdrops for more sparkle lighting – silver buffet lamps, candelabras and candle sticks, all reflected in an ornate golden framed mirror. www.jonpauldesigns.com

HOME FOR THE
Holidays How to Host Thanksgiving in Your Home for the Very First Time
BY CARY FULLER-RANDOLPH THERE COMES A TIME IN EVERY PARENT’S LIFE when he or she must cede control of a holiday to their offspring. Or, in my parents’ case, when they finally get to dump all the stress and expense of a holiday onto me, their eldest daughter and only child within driving distance. This Thanksgiving, instead of gathering at their house for four days of high-calorie chaos, 4 out of 6 of us will convene at my tiny pre-war apartment instead. And why not? I’ve got the crystal, the china and the brass candlesticks to set a lovely table, and my stove works (hopefully). Plus, Black Friday shopping will certainly be better at the Galleria than it is in Joplin— which is no personal insult to my hometown but simply a numerical fact. To prepare for my first holiday as hostess with the most-ish, I combed the internet 36
|
UPTOWN MAGAZINE
and inquired of several gracious friends: What should one do to make Thanksgiving special and unique while still observing one’s family’s traditions in a new locale? Or, more personally, how can I assert myself as the HBIC—despite not knowing how to even defrost a turkey? And perhaps most importantly, how will we watch football since I don’t have cable? Should you find yourself in this position on T-Day or any holiday, here are a few key lessons: SET THE STAGE: “Don’t focus all your attention on your holiday decorations. Make sure your guests have a comfy room or sleeping quarters first. Clean sheets, current magazines and flowers on the nightstand, plus their favorite cocktail ingredients, will make them happy the minute they walk through the door—no matter how bad your cooking is.” OBTAIN A RECIPE LIST AND SHOP EARLY: “It can be tempting to make your mom do the grocery shopping with you, but she probably does not want to spend her long weekend at Schnucks! Stock the fridge before anyone arrives, and you’ll save everyone a ton of stress.” – Kate W., University City KNOW YOUR LIMITS: “I’m not a great chef, but I can bake a blue-ribbon pie. To compensate, I order a lot of food to pick up on Thanksgiving morning and let my mother-in-law have the run of the kitchen. She likes heirloom recipes, and I like watching football so we both win!” – Megan K., Frontenac MAKE A PRE- AND POST-DINNER PLAN: “Draw up an itinerary. If you want to watch a parade, make sure all your guests are prepared for it. If you want to play touch football Kennedy-style on Art Hill, ask someone to pack a football. Boredom is the silent killer of all holidays.” – Sherin B., downtown Saint Louis DRINK RESPONSIBLY: “I sipped a bit too much wine once while my in-laws were in town, in an attempt to calm my nerves, and my husband ended up in the kitchen for hours after dinner, cleaning up everyone else’s mess. Never again!” – Lauren F., Webster Groves SEND THEM HOME IN STYLE: “Hopefully they’ll bring hostess gifts. As a gesture of thanks for making the trip, why not send them all home with something to remember the weekend, like a scented candle, a framed family photo or a little jar of your favorite olive oil?” – Anna M., Clayton If all else fails, however, the Hilton Frontenac still has suites available for Thanksgiving weekend, as does the Four Seasons, and there’s always room for one more at my dining table. YOU CAN ACTUALLY ESCAPE FROM THE PLANNING, the mundane, the decorations and constant food preparation! How? A fabulous holiday vacation is the perfect answer! We have collected just a few alluring fabulous luxury destinations that we hope will appeal to your sense of wonder and fun! We suggest that you and your family should have a discussion this holiday season to decide how you would like to spend next year’s holiday! Booking a year in advance will guarantee space on your dream vacation and perhaps give you an “early bird” special discount. Also, if you are looking for local stays, many hotels (especially those catering usually to corporate clients) have special holiday rates. You don’t have to go to the North Pole! My dream as a child was to go to Disneyland. (Yes, I predate Disney World.) The closest I came was a gift of “Disneykins” which I treasured till they were lost one by one. Here is your chance to fulfill your children’s dream by treating your little Disneykins to an unforgettable holiday! Everything is light, color and sound with special lighting on Cinderella’s Castle, holiday parades and shows! Imagine meeting Santa at a Disney park! Nearby Universal Studios features the “Grinchmas Who-liday Spectacular,” and a Holiday Parade sponsored by Macy’s! If you love skiing, the perfect holiday for you may be sitting by a fire, listening to carolers after fun-filled day at the slopes. Check out your favorite ski area to see if special festivities will enhance the holiday season. The Beaver Creek area in Colorado offers their WinterFest complete with the Kids’ Winter Wonder Parade and the Family FunFest Carnival in the Town Plaza. Catch the “ Vail Holidaze” event in December with their annual tree lighting ceremony, lantern walk, skating and the decorations lining the cobbled streets midst the Alpine lodges and chalets! Perhaps you will choose to stay and celebrate the New Year with the torchlight ski down and fireworks! Of course, you can always venture a bit further out of the states and ski at the luxury ski resort, the Fairmont Chateau Whistler in Whistler, British Columbia, Canada. Located at the base of Blackcomb Mountain, about a 2 hour drive from Vancouver, this incredible hotel offers a wonderful holiday package, full of activities for your entire family. This year, the Fairmont Chateau Whistler features their Festive Season, with holiday crafts classes for adults and children which include ornament making and wreath making, family movie nights, special fun “play” rooms for the children! For the ultimate luxury ski vacation, you can travel to the Nordic countries and France, Italy, Switzerland, Austria or Germany! With private chateaus, hotels and slopes that will please any skier, you can live your ultimate dream. Speaking of Europe, have you experienced the famous European Christmas markets? Certain tour companies, such as the wonderful Trafalgar Tours, include visits to the traditional German holiday markets which explore cities near the Black Forest or venture to nearby Austria and Italy as well. The medieval village of Rothenberg comes even more alive at the holidays and many tours include Oberammergau, or perhaps even Innsbruck. If the tour bus is not your style, you

may want to experience a Christmas market cruise! Cruise lines such as Viking and Avalon glide along the Danube! What better way to celebrate the holidays than to visit the Holy Land. Cruises offer tours celebrating Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Imagine the spiritual revelations and inspiration when you visit ancient synagogues and cities, King David’s Tomb, Jerusalem, the Room of the Last Supper and the actual Dead Sea Scrolls. As always, call your favorite travel counselor. Most likely they have booked it many times over and can offer advice, find the best logical air, tour companies, hotels, transportation and insurance. Go ahead! Give your loved ones the best Holiday Ever! You will remember it for years to come! UT UPTOWN MAGAZINE

MAS T E RS OF
VODKA
Saint Louis is world-famous for its beer, and Missouri wines draw their share of fans, but until recently, homegrown spirits were hard to come by. Emphasis on the word were. BY CARY RANDOLPH FULLER
NEARLY EVERY MAJOR SUPERMARKET AND LIQUOR STORE IN THE METRO AREA CARRIES MASTERMIND VODKA.
CARL LEVERING, A TRAIN ENGINEER-CUM-SELFTAUGHT DISTILLER living in Pontoon Beach, Illinois, is determined to change all that. Just 8 years ago, Levering whipped up his first batch of stovetop mash—a recipe that took 3 years to perfect and nearly one to make legally. Today, he and his staff of 2 churn out nearly 1,200 bottles per batch—or 137,000 bottles since inception—using equipment made almost entirely by hand. Levering hasn’t gone far geographically. His house sits about 30 yards from his storefront. But thanks to his incredibly smooth corn-based vodka, rising star moonshine and a handful of national awards to its name, including Top 10 Craft Distilleries for 2016 by USA Today, Mastermind is poised to be the Gateway City’s next great export. A truly good vodka tastes like nothing. An even better vodka packs a rich history in its clean finish. Mastermind accomplishes both. But don’t take my word for it: Visit the distillery yourself ! On any given Saturday afternoon, Mastermind’s first hire and brand executive, Chris Egan, and promotions director Brandi Radny, can be found hard at work mixing cocktails, sharing the history of their brand and leading tours of headquarters to diverse groups of adults from all over the Midwest. Just who loves vodka the most may surprise you. On my
visit, I joined three generations of friends who came from as far away as Indiana just to sample Levering’s brew. Just before us, an octet of well-dressed ladies in their 60s and 70s had sampled every cocktail on the menu—and purchased 6 cases of booze to take home! Drinks are mixed by Radny in a kitchen just beyond the workroom; food is BYO. And bring their own food everyone did, the better to balance her wicked strong bloody Marys. Following the first round and an oral history of Mastermind’s origins, Egan leads his tours to the main event—a bare bones garage filled with beakers, bottles, aged oak barrels and an American-made distiller that refines each batch of vodka an impressive 6 times. Everything at Mastermind Vodka, excepting one piece of German machinery, is grown or made right here in the U. S. of A. That includes corn from Wentzville, glass bottles from Park Hills and cork stoppers by way of Detroit. Keeping his craft local is a chief concern of Levering’s; whose pride in his products and process are self-evident. Mastermind is about to get even more local. Levering won’t spill details, but a move to downtown Saint Louis is in the cards, most likely a refurbished warehouse that can house a great deal more equipment and bottle far more Russian water. All that will be a boon to those lately searching in vain for a hometown vodka, but we aren’t the only ones to benefit. Levering says that moving operations just 13 miles west across the state line will save $1.50 in taxes per bottle. (Remember: One batch results in 1,200 bottles. You do the math.) Creating a successful liquor brand from scratch seems about as improbable as creating a successful liquor from scratch in one’s kitchen. Levering and his team have not only done both, they’re received the public’s support to take these dreams even further. We’ll drink to that. UT UPTOWN MAGAZINE

cooking with vicki bensinger IT’S HARD TO BELIEVE THE HOLIDAYS are upon us again – my favorite time of year! The streets, and stores come alive with fun cheerful music and colorful displays. You’ll hear adults and children singing, see children frolicking in the snow, and on the streets, with everyone running around to seek out that perfect gift to give and receive. The smell of holiday spices, and aroma of freshly baked goods and warm savory dishes fills the air – it’s all so comforting! Every year I enjoy creating treats to share at parties, gift to family and friends, and those that provide a service to me. It’s a special way to say thank you, and show you care. Yes, you can go out and purchase a gift to give to all those on your list, but sometimes homemade says it all! I’ve always been a fan of shortbread with that soft buttery flavor and crunch. This holiday season I wanted to share a favorite recipe of mine that whips up in no time. With the exception of sanding sugar and Kisses you’ll probably have most ingredients on hand. Sanding Sugar can be purchased at craft, kitchen, or baking supply stores here in town. I’ve used red and green sanding sugar below, but use whatever color you prefer to match the holiday you’re celebrating. However you choose to decorate your Holiday Shortbread Cookies they’re sure to be a hit to all that indulge. Enjoy!!!
HOLIDAY SHORTBREAD COOKIES WITH CANDY CANE BLOSSOMS Yield: Approximately 36 Cookies | Prep Time: 15 Minutes Cook Time: 14-18 Minutes | Total Time: 29-33 Minutes INGREDIENTS 1 cup salted butter, softened 2/3 cup sugar 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract 2 cups all-purpose flour 1/2 cup each, Red & Green Sanding Sugar 1 10-ounce bag Hershey's Holiday Candy Cane Blossoms DIRECTIONS Heat oven to 350°F. Pour colored sanding sugar into two (2) separate bowls. Unwrap Candy Cane Blossom Kisses. Combine butter, sugar and ½ teaspoon vanilla extract in bowl. Beat at medium speed, scraping bowl as needed, until creamy. Add flour; beat at low speed, until well combined. Shape dough into 1-inch balls using a small cookie scoop or teaspoon - then shaping in your hands. Roll balls of dough in sanding sugar, to coat entire sphere with sugar. Place cookies 2 inches apart onto parchment lined cookie sheets. Bake 14-18 minutes or until bottoms are lightly browned. Remove cookies from oven. While still hot from the oven, gently place one candy cane blossom in the center of each cookie, pressing down to make a slight impression. If inserted too deep cookies may crack - adding character but maintaining that same buttery flavor. Allow to rest 5 minutes on cookie sheets, then carefully remove to cooling rack. Cool completely before moving or touching.

Christine Brewer Soprano Suprema
Grammy Award winning Christine Brewer is considered one of the world’s top operatic sopranos. An international performer, Brewer remains faithful to her local roots and St. Louis audiences. Both her brilliant voice and radiant personality make her a favorite on the stage, as well as a sought-after recording artist. PHOTO: RAY MARKLIN
BREWER GREW UP in the Mississippi River town of Grand Tower, Illinois. She credits her family and especially her mother, Dee Burchyett, for her love of music. “I don’t remember a time I wasn’t performing. It was a tradition to make singing the center of all our family gatherings. My mother was truly my first voice teacher simply by example. She could tell a story through her singing and sang from her heart.” Brewer sang in chorus and musicals at Shawnee High School.. “At age 17, I sang Nellie Forbush in South Pacific and Mother Abbess in The Sound of Music.” Brewer later attended McKendree University in Lebanon, Illinois, where she concentrated on music education. “I studied voice under the late Glenn Freiner who encouraged me to study the poetry and texts of whatever I sang. That has been one of the best lessons of my formal education." Her first professional work was in the chorus of The Beggars Opera with Opera Theatre of Saint Louis in 1982. She made her major debut at OTSL in Britten’s Peter Grimes. In 1986, fate stepped in when she met famed Wagnerian soprano Birgit Nilsson. “I sang for her in a Master Class in Washington, DC. We simply hit it off. Birgit invited me to Germany where she was teaching. That trip influenced much of my Wagnerian repertoire". Brewer began accepting more important roles, including her debut in the title role of Ariadne auf Naxos at the Metropolitan Opera in 2003.Then came her debut at the San Francisco Opera in 2006, singing the title role in Beethoven's Fidelio. Brewer has since gone on to perform in concert and opera houses around the world, including the Metropolitan Opera, Paris Opera, Covent Garden, and The Opera House in
Sydney, Australia. Grammy Award winning Brewer’s discography includes over 25 recordings. In January 2013, Brewer created the role of Sister Aloysius in the world premiere of Doubt at the Minnesota Opera. She recently reprised this role in St. Louis with Union Avenue Opera last August. In 2015, she opened the St. Louis Cathedral Concerts season. She has sung in the annual 9/11 concert at The Sheldon. Brewer enjoys passing on her love of opera to a younger generation, working with Marissa, Illinois 6th graders in a program called Opera-tunities. She also works with voice students at Webster University. “I urge them to learn what their songs or arias mean in German, French or Italian. Otherwise, how can they express themselves and tell a story?” Among her favorite singers are Leontyne Price, Ella Fitzgerald, and surprise! - Dolly Parton. “I listen to all kinds of music, including jazz, gospel, and pop. I admire so many singers, rock groups and opera singers – it just depends on my mood.” Brewer resides in Lebanon, Illinois, with her husband Ross Brewer. They have one daughter, Elisabeth and a grandson, Oscar. On April 29, 2015, Christine Brewer received a star on the St. Louis Walk of Fame.
