With warmer temps right around the corner, now is the perfect time to start thinking about swimsuit season.
For many women, swimsuit shopping is not high on their list of fun things to do. They cringe at the thought of trying on ill-fitting suits in brightly lit dressing rooms. “There is never anything in my size! Nothing looks right!” are common complaints. Thankfully, designers of today have been listening. Gone are the one size fits all options, replaced by trendy styles for a wide range of body types. For example: concerned about your middle or showing too much bottom? Retro cut suits are hot for 2017. Featuring higher waists and full coverage bottoms, they are chic but still provide a modest comfort level. Another full coverage look is the classic maillot one piece. It is back this summer in a big way! This comfortably styled suit has been a go-to for women of all ages. You’ll find it has been updated with features such as sleek cutouts and off the shoulder necklines. Try something new and look for a one piece in a fun print like tie-dye or straps with interesting details. If you are shopping for a two-piece suit, designers have been rolling out some fantastic swimwear choices. A hot, new look is the halter-top bikini. With a higher neckline, it is so flattering on many body shapes. Of course, there are still plenty of bandeaus and string tops to be found! They are styled in pretty pastels or botanical prints. The coming of spring is upon us. That means warmer weather, outdoor parties, and a new wardrobe. Oftentimes during the winter holidays, we allowed ourselves to indulge a little more than we should have. This often can lead to weight gain, even if only a few pounds. If winter has left you wishing you were a few pounds lighter this spring, have no fear. You can still indulge in eating and drinking while maintaining (or even losing!) weight. Here are a few suggestions to make that happen.

available, I always recommend filling up on healthy foods throughout the day prior to the event. This will help you from over-indulging once you are there because you didn’t starve yourself all day! When selecting foods to fill your plate, select fruits and vegetables first. Then, portion a small serving of the other foods you want to try, but stop before going for seconds. When you are going out to eat, order a side of steamed, roasted, or grilled vegetables (hold the butter!) or a side salad instead of the fries. This simple substitution can cut hundreds of calories from your meal!
What to Drink …
What to Eat …
As a personal trainer, I really don’t like using the word “diet”. The word “diet” to me is often seen as a negative thing or something that will only last for a fleeting moment. People try a new diet for a week or two, lose an obscene (and often unhealthy) amount of weight, then fall off the wagon and gain the weight back in a vicious cycle. Instead of focusing on a diet this spring, I would rather see you focus on making small, healthy changes to your current eating routine that will pump up the nutrient value, while not adding a ton of calories (and maybe even cutting calories). This will help you sustain the weight loss—and is a tasty way of doing it! Spring typically brings the re-opening of farmer’s markets. Local farmer’s markets are a great way to get fresh and local fruits and vegetables. Filling your plate with fruits and vegetables is great way to improve your health while helping keep you full. Fruit and vegetables pack a ton of nutrients and fiber and are typically low in calories, which make them an excellent addition to your spring meal plan. Find in-season fruits and vegetables to get the best value and taste for your money. Try adding some chopped berries to your salad or grilling zucchini for a twist on an old favorite food! Lean proteins, such as skinless poultry or fish, can also often be found at parties or on the grill. Spring is a great time to try out new citrus marinades, which work especially well on these types of proteins. Try using fresh lime or lemon juice as a base to your marinade. Pair your lean proteins with sensible sides, like a salad, vegetables, fruits or whole grains (like brown rice or quinoa) and you have yourself a tasty meal! When you know you’ll be headed to a party and there may not be healthy options readily
Patio parties are also more common as the weather gets warmer, which means drinks like margaritas and daquiris are commonplace. While these drinks do taste good, they pack a mean caloric punch (and a ton of sugar). Many margaritas have over 250 calories in just one twelve-ounce drink! Considering alcohol alone contains 7 calories per gram, and offers no other nutritional value, it should be limited. That said, there are some better cocktail choices that still taste great. Choose low-calorie mixers, such as club soda. Adding a splash of citrus to your club soda and alcohol of choice can bring a new brightness and flavor to the drink as well (feel free to order my personal favorite: vodka soda with a twist of lime). You can also experiment with different flavored alcohols to change your routine. Wines—in particular, red wines—also can provide some health benefits with typically around 100 calories per glass. According to Prevention Magazine, red wines can help to protect your heart by lowering cholesterol, help to control blood sugar levels, and even fight off a cold (Source: http:// www.prevention.com/health/healthyliving/health-benefits-of-red-wine). Who can say no to a glass red wine with all those benefits? As with any alcohol consumption, moderation will be key, especially when you are trying to watch your waistline. Another important note when it comes to alcohol consumption is to be mindful of what and how much you are eating while you are drinking. Alcohol can help to lower inhibitions, which can lead to inadvertent consumption of WAY more calories than originally intended. Be mindful of what and how much you are consuming, and be sure to always keep your alcohol intake in check. I hope this spring can be your healthiest yet! Remember, making small changes to your nutritional intake and alcohol consumption can save you hundreds of calories, and several inches on your waistline! FILLERS/BOTOX When I meet a patient to discuss facial rejuvenation, the first question that I receive from almost every patient is, “What do I need?” The short (but unsatisfying) answer for patients is “Nothing. You don’t NEED anything and if I don’t perform any procedures on you, then you will still be fine.”
So the real questions that patients should be asking are:
What issues are bothering the patient and what issues would they like to see addressed? Are there any anatomical issues that I feel that I can improve by performing a procedure? Which procedure will safely give the patients the most benefit for the longest period time? Does it have an acceptable recovery time for their schedule? Does it work with their budget?” The answer for these is different for every patient. Some patients do not want surgery and will specifically tell me that they are interested in those procedures that stay in the office and don’t require a visit to the operating room. Some patients don’t have the time available to recover after a surgical procedure or wouldn’t really benefit from surgery. For these patients, non-surgical treatments such as, Botox, fillers, chemical peels, and lasers may be good options. Also some patients have enough skin laxity or facial aging that non-surgical procedures just won’t provide enough correction to be the best option. Then there are those patients that say, “I don’t do maintenance treatments” and they want a single surgical procedure that will take care of their “issues” for next 5-10 years. These patients will usually benefit from a surgical treatment. 20

beauty & fitness Here are some of the different options available to patients: Botox is a protein that temporarily prevents muscles from contracting. It is injected into specific muscles to prevent contraction of those muscles and reduce the facial lines that are caused by the contraction of those muscles. The upper half of the face is commonly treated with Botox to soften the lines around the eyes (crow’s feet), frown lines, and the horizontal wrinkles of the forehead. It can also be used to help treat the down-turned corners of the mouth and the vertical lines in the neck (platysmal bands). It takes one to two weeks to see full effect and then lasts for 3-4 months depending on the area treated and the amount of Botox that is used. There is no
Facial rejuvenation surgery is primarily used to address excess skin on the face although fat transfers can be used to selectively add volume back to the face. When evaluating a face, we divide the face into thirds and the upper third of the face is treated with a brow lift, the middle third with eyelid surgery and the lower third with a facelift (or neck lift). A brow lift will help with addressing some of the hooding of the upper eyes, frown lines, and horizontal wrinkles of the forehead. Eyelid surgery will address the excess skin to upper and lower eyelids along with the “bulging” of the fat pads to the eyelids. A facelift will help with repositioning the
significant downtime after having a Botox treatment. Fillers are products that are used to add volume to an area and fill in fine to moderate lines. The most common fillers are the hyaluronic acid fillers like Juvederm and Restylane. They can be used to restore the volume that is lost in malar (cheekbone) region, around the mouth (marionette lines), some acne scars, and the lips. These products give an immediate result and last for 6-24 months depending on the product that is used. There can be some downtime after fillers in the form of bruising and swelling in about 15-20% of patients. These products are safe, but do have the risk of bruising, swelling, uneven filling, and vascular compromise. As an added safety factor, the hyaluronic acid fillers are reversible with hyaluronidase that works within 24-48 hours. Resurfacing treatments (lasers, chemical peels, and dermabrasion) remove the outer layer of skin and can help improve texture, fine lines and wrinkles, uneven skin coloration, and some scarring. The depth of a resurfacing treatment will determine the results and the patient’s downtime and their results. Deeper treatments will have more of an effect, but they will have a longer downtime and a greater risk for unwanted side effects like scarring, discomfort, and hypopigmentation of the skin. Patients typically need 3-10 days for recovery time depending on the depth and type of the treatment.

Since facial aging is a combination of loss of volume in the face, the loss of elasticity of the skin, and environmental damage to the skin it requires different types of treatments to achieve the optimal results. Therefore to achieve the best results for patients, it frequently requires a combination of surgical and nonsurgical procedures. To determine the best treatment plan for each patient it is important to have an in depth consultation with a board certified physician that has a specific focus and training in the procedures that you are interested having performed. The entrance way to Mikki Jones’ glorious 10,000 square foot estate is absolutely breathtaking! I’m certain she heard me gasp! The magnificent 28 foot ceiling is stunning. The custom designed wrought iron stone stairway, handmade at Valley Forge Company in Eureka, elegantly curves its way through the center of the home. One look at the woodwork framed view of her Great Room with the stately full-length arched windows and perfectly appointed beautiful furniture is strikingly dramatic. The air itself seemed scented with fresh flowers! No wonder as I was introduced to the very talented floral designer and event planner, Mel Worley who was on hand to assist us. He is the creator of the amazing floral arrangements and the dining room table setting which you see in the accompanying pictures! I couldn’t wait to see every inch of the house and meet Mikki and Elena and their all-important canines! Originally from Pittsburgh, Mikki and her 20 year old daughter, Elena, share this 20 room, 5 bedroom home along with their very well-behaved dogs. Currently training to become a Certified Aroma Therapist, (perhaps another reason for the relaxing atmosphere of the home!) she works with Young Essential Oils.

In her past life, Mikki owned the award winning Bistro 1130 in Town and Country. (Winner of the Best New Restaurant of 2011 and the Best of Chesterfield in 2012). She has a vast background in design, building and business. Mikki and her late husband Robert Jones had designed and worked on the house in Chesterfield together but not without its challenges. That wonderful, impressive, dramatic staircase in the entry was a painstaking effort. Delivered in sections, each piece weighed 700 lbs! Well worth the tribulations, the magnificent stairway offers beautiful steps to the upper level bedrooms or to the more casual recreation rooms below and introduces the eclectic French Mediterranean style that is found throughout the home. The entrance is on the middle floor which hosts the Great Room, study, formal dining room, an open kitchen/breakfast room/sitting room (affectionately called the Hearth Room), the master suite, powder room, office, laundry and bathroom with the pool and cabana off the kitchen.

The kitchen portion of the Hearth Room has beautifully distressed Old World style cabinetry with a gorgeous granite top. The old compliments the new with Old World style cabinets integrated with the 21st century wide-screen television! In keeping with the French Country style, a gray stoned chimney and fireplace make this room cozy, casual and yet elegant. I’ve never seen a more beautifully designed table setting! We captured a picture of the table and Mikki with Willy, the dog. From the dining room, we ventured into the wet bar area where we caught a picture of Mikki and Elena ready to wind down their day.

Most impressive of all is the theme of nature and careful aesthetic use of plants throughout the house. Every room mirrors nature’s goodness whether through stone, wood or the beautiful, healthy plants which appear throughout the home. Upstairs rooms are three bedrooms, the nanny’s quarters complete with a full bath and kitchen. Elena’s room is feminine yet also reflects a soothing presence of a tree in a lovely wall mural. You will note in our photo, Willy is pictured with Elena in her sitting area. Elena, not surprisingly, is working towards being a dog trainer! The lowest level of the home is fully equipped with a sauna, full bath, craft room wine cellar and rec room and family room so guests have all the entertainment and room they need. If you like pool, the billiard table is ready to be utilized! The sitting area, complete with piano and bar is ready for conversation and relaxing. In honor of Mikki’s husband, you will see a sign on the wall that says “Jonesy’s Place” along with a martini glass in neon. A vodka martini was Bob’s favorite drink. A house is a reflection of the people who live in it and Mikki and Elena’s home is no exception. Comfortable yet stately, creative and tasteful, this lovely home creates a welcoming atmosphere with the use of art, design, nostalgia, and nature and the coziness of a true loving home, complete with faithful dogs by a fireplace. Winter is almost over. Somehow palm trees swaying, flamingos flying, white pristine beaches with beautiful clear translucent ocean water, straw baskets and hats, seafood, rice, rum and friendly folks with pastel houses still seem so far away. BY LINDA SPALL
BUT WAIT! HOLD ON! How easy to forget that the Bahamas are only a mere 50 miles from West Palm Beach! Miami Airport to Nassau Bahama Cruise Terminal is just a 55 minute flight! Those 3 & 4 day cruises will have you there in no time with all the food you can eat! How amazing that the Bahamas are so near and so attainable! The lush greenery, sandy beaches and what is proclaimed to be the clearest water on the planet is only hours away! So what do the Bahamas have to offer? Nice temperatures! The claim is that there has never been a freeze reported in the Bahamas. The lowest temperature recorded was around 41 degrees in 1981. May to October is the rainy season and traditionally hurricane season runs from June till the end of November. Buy travel insurance if you are considering traveling during that time. December to March can get too cold to enjoy water sports as temperatures run from 60-70 degrees as the high. Traveling is easy for US citizens. Flights and ships depart from the states daily. Money is very simple as the U.S. dollar is equal to the Bahama dollar. Bahamians are friendly and fun and have great music, festivals and food! Some less adventurous Americans will welcome the familiar names of Burger King and Domino’s Pizza but you must try the fresh fish dishes with the specialty of island “conch” as well as their rice and peas and coconut desserts! The Commonwealth of the Bahamas is very comfortable for the U.S. and British visitors especially because everyone speaks English. After the Revolutionary War, British Loyalist migrated with their slaves to the Bahamas to build large plantations making English the spoken language. To be clear, the Bahamas are now independent as of 1973. The capital is the seaport of Nassau on New Providence Island. However, the largest of the 700 islands (only 26 are inhabited) is Andros.

The city of Nassau has a population of 274,400 which is home to over 70 percent of the country’s citizens. The Bahamian dialect is a mixture of West Country English and African and very melodic. If you are the sporty type, the Bahamas can accommodate almost any warm weather sport. Golfers will love the beautiful championship courses that are found on the islands in resorts such as the Albany and the Ocean Club on New Providence and the Abaco Club on Great Abaco Island. The Underwater Explorers Society has its headquarters in Freeport on Grand Bahama Island and is a world renowned scuba diving destination. Year round deepsea fishing, bonefish and sport fishing, fly or flat, challenge happy fishermen. For a different kind of playing action, gambling casinos are legal and you can have your fun at the Memories Grand Bahama Beach Resort or the Treasure Bay Casino in Freeport or the Atlantis Casino at Paradise Island or the Baha Mar Casino in Nassau. If you arrive on a cruise ship, you will deboard and immediately find the markets and shopping district. You can take a cab,
ferry boat or walk across the 600 foot long bridge to Paradise Island where you will find a host of hotels including the incredible Atlantis. The complex is amazing and worth a walkthrough. Not into water sports or shopping? Take a cab to the Ardastra Zoo and see the Marching Flamingos or visit the Junkanoo Museum! “Junkanoo” refers to a type of celebration that is held on Boxing Day (Dec 26) and on New Year’s. The museum shows films and demonstrations of the incredible dancing and rhythm instruments like cowbells, goatskin drums and horns and the fantastic colorful costumes usually made with cardboard and crepe paper. You can have great fun exploring the islands by car or scooter but always remember that just like the U.S., some villages are very small with few conveniences. From 1696 through the early 1700s, the Bahama waters hosted pirates with the most famous being Edward Teach also known as “Blackbeard”. What better place to film “Pirates of 42

the Caribbean- Dead Man’s Chest”! Since the area is easy to reach for cast and crews, the islands are the perfect location for Hollywood and the UK. Among other famous movies filmed on location are the Beatle movie “Help”, Tom Hanks and Daryl Hannah in “Splash”, several of the James Bond films and of course, “Flipper”. (You too can swim with the dolphins at Dolphin Encounters on Blue Lagoon Island, only a 20 minutes boat ride from Nassau.) How lucky we are to live so close to the West Indies! cooking with vicki bensinger CELEBRATE MOTHER’S DAY BY CREATING A MUM CUPCAKE BOUQUET Mother’s Day is May 14th this year, and if you’re like me I always try to come up with fun ideas to bring to the table for my mom & mother-in-law. These cupcakes are so pretty, and super easy to create. Even your children or grandchildren (as young as 2 years) can make these to gift to their mom, or to serve as dessert for Mother’s Day. I especially like these as a bouquet of flowers using a bit of green licorice for the stem. They’re just about impossible to mess up! Each cupcake takes about 20-30 minutes to create, but oh, look how lovely they are! Who wouldn’t be thrilled to get these? Make them for Mother’s Day, a bridal or baby shower, or any type of event. You’ll have a blast creating these, but best of all, your children will too! It’s fun for the whole family – that’s what I love!!! Of all the desserts and homemade crafts I’ve ever created for Mother’s Day this is by far my favorite! If you’re looking for a special & creative homemade Mother’s Day gift to make for your mom or for the kids to get involved in – this is it! Whether you make cupcakes and icing from scratch, or use a box mix and canned frosting, these will be stunning! MUM CUPCAKES
A simple yet beautiful cupcake bouquet to create for Mother's Day! YIELD: 12 CUPCAKES INGREDIENTS 12 cupcakes (use your favorite recipe or box mix) icing of choice, any color sanding sugar or sprinkles (any color) miniature marshmallows candy ball, Good & Plenty, or Jelly Bean green licorice DIRECTIONS 1. Cut approximately 40 miniature marshmallows in 1/2 on the diagonal, and set aside in a bowl. Have sanding sugar or sprinkles in a container 2. Spread icing on the top of a cupcake. Do this one at a time, otherwise the icing will form a crust, making it difficult for marshmallows to adhere to cupcake. 3. Dip each cut 1/2 of marshmallow into the sanding sugar/sprinkles and starting at the outer edge, add the dipped marshmallows to the cupcake, sanding sugar facing inward. 4. After you finish lining the marshmallows on the outer edge in a full circle, add the next row in front of the previous circle. Continue adding the marshmallows - be sure to put them close together - until you've added all of them. You should have an empty spot in the middle. 5. Add a candy ball, Good & Plenty candy or Jelly Bean in the center. You've now completed one cupcake.

Her instinctive news savvy has made Jasmine Huda one of St. Louis’ finest local TV personalities. She is also well known for her community involvement.
Jasmine is the recipient of many awards including both national and regional Edward R. Murrow awards, and a Mid-America Emmy. Honored in local publications, she was named “Best Newscaster” by St. Louis Magazine, “Best Female On Air Personality” by Alive Magazine, and has been profiled in The New York Times, The 9s Men’s Magazine, Forbes.com, and “Who’s Who In Diversity in St. Louis.” Jasmine recently announced at the Guns ‘N Hoses fundraiser and the annual Go Red For Women Luncheon. She works with the Metro St. Louis Heart Walk, The National Council of Jewish Women’s ‘Back 2 School Store’, and The Veiled Prophet Fashion Show. On a personal note, Jasmine married attorney Peter LeBlanc, Jr. in September 2015. Always a fashionista (although she denies it), Jasmine designed her own wedding dress. “From the very beginning, I knew I wanted my dress to reflect my duel cultures – Indian and American. I chose red, which is the color traditionally worn by Indian brides and came up with an East meets West gown - a one-shoulder silk sari dress with a beautiful train. I wore my mother’s heirloom gold jewelry and my forehead was adorned with a gold tikka.” This very busy lady finds her calm with yoga classes. (She was cover girl on the Fall 2015 issue of Yoga & Spa Magazine.) “This training has made me a stronger person – both emotionally and physically. The mind-body connection is incredible. HER PARENTS EMIGRATED FROM WEST BENGAL, INDIA in the 60’s to settle in St. Louis. She is the youngest of their five children. Jasmine’s broadcasting interests began at Ladue High School while competing in speech and debate tournaments. She said, “I listened to National Public Radio (NPR) to prepare for an assignment that involved delivering a radio newscast. While some of my peers were out on dates or at movies on Friday nights, I was home recording newscasts. I have vivid memories of re-playing All Things Considered on my boom box to prepare scripts!” (She was named Radio News Speaking Station Champion her senior year.) Jasmine’s news career really began at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. “I was preparing for a career in law, but somewhere between my junior and senior year, I realized my true interest was journalism.” She began working at the Michigan NPR affiliate, WUOM-FM as a reporter writing copy and voicing stories for broadcasts. That experience helped her land an internship with All Things Considered at NPR Headquarters in in Washington, DC. “Juan Williams (Fox News) was also working as a correspondent at NPR and put me in touch with his management friends at the Washington, DC Bureau of the Fox News Channel. So I made the jump to TV, working behind the scenes again, but as an associate producer for the daytime live programming.” Within a few years Jasmine realized she wanted to be both a producer and a presenter. “I moved to KSPR-TV Springfield, MO for my first on-air news reporting job, later to St. Louis, and the rest is history.” Back home, she first worked at KSDK-TV, and later KMOV-TV as an evening reporter and anchor. Jasmine joined The Fox 2 News team in January 2016 and currently co-anchors the 11 pm news with Shirley Washington. “It’s an exciting gig. I’ve interviewed Salman Rushdie, have been suited up and taken down by a police K9, and done some special stories about law enforcement which included a shoot-don’t shoot simulation.”
