character WINES WITH

CIGAR SMOKER

Cigar people are extroverts who are social and generous whether it be with money, contacts or talents. RAMOS PINOTS QUINTA DE ERVAMOIRA 10 YEAR OLD TAWNY PORT A good match for the cigar smoker is this stunning Port wine from the house of Ramos Pinot located in Portugal’s town of Oporto This wine has a near-perfect balance of ripe, decadent fruit and aged complexity from 10 years in oak casks. Port wines are the perfect, after dinner wine and this would be awesome with a fine cigar.

THE NEWBIE

Are you a novice to the wine experience? Well, don’t be afraid! Here’s a wine that’s sure to please. 2015 ENCOSTAS DO LIMA VINHO VERDE ROSÉ We recommend this refreshing, lightly sparkling, medium dry rosé from Portugal. It’s the perfect wine for someone just getting into vino. It has lovely color with a touch of effervescence. It’s lively on the nose with similar fresh fruit flavors on the palate. You’ll find it versatile on the dinner table, and the sweetness will allow it to handle spicier foods as well.

These wines are available at Starr's Wine & Spirits.

What’s your wine personality? Are You Pinot Noir or Zinfandel? We present local wine experts who advised us on varieties that will fit you to a tee. BY SHEILA FRAYNE RHOADES

THE THRILL SEEKER

is an adventurer who pursues novel and intense experiences. It’s someone who isn't going to settle for the mainstream, but looks beyond the latest trends and fads. 2011 VON WINNING SAUVIGNON BLANC "500", PFALZ, GERMANY This rare and unique wine is among the greatest Sauvignon Blancs made. If you like white wine, do yourself a favor and grab some of this. This wine is truly in the same league as wines two to three times the price! It's a knockout nose of smoke, flowers, and minerals - truly a Grand Cru wine minus the triple digit price tag!

THE CLASSIC

has lasting power and never goes out of style, no matter the fad of the day. 2007 PROVIDENCE, POMEROL (BORDEAUX), FRANCE The wines of Bordeaux are as classic as they can get! Whether it's classic art, classical music or classic cuisine, a great bottle of Bordeaux will enhance all of it. This wine has just enough years in the bottle to make it perfect for drinking now. There's loads of milk chocolate and roasted espresso beans on the nose, as well as dark plum and blackberry notes.

These wines are available at The Wine Merchant, Ltd.

THE ROMANTIC

has an artistic view of life and a rich imagination. Romantics love candlelight dinners and are often easy to spot because of their interesting way of dressing stylishly yet unusually. NV JOEL FALMET BRUT ROSE Nothing says romance like Rose Champagne, and grower Joel Falmet makes one of the finest examples of Rose Champagne in the market today. It features persistent mousse, with fine bubbles rising slowly. Pale salmon pink in color, with a shade of gold, it has a palate of delicate red fruit and fresh pear. It is elegant, and shows great finesse.

THE YUPPIE

is a young affluent professional. Millennial Yuppies have a hip fashion sense , a cool appearance and studied poise. 2014 PAHLMEYER “JAYSON” RED BLEND The Jayson Red from Pahlmeyer screams for a prime filet and a cobb salad. Just drop off your roadster with the valet and tuck into a white table cloth, rare steak and a bottle of Jayson. Bright cherry, freesia, and cassis bud aromas lead into plush forest floor and sweet pine in the nose. The wine balances earthy minerality and ripe fruit with a velvety, lingering finish of mocha and cream.

These wines are available at The Wine and Cheese Place.

BEAUTY FITNESS

MASSAGE: A Necessary Luxury

BY SARAH WALENTYNOWICZ

Stress. Tension. Headaches. These ailments are common place in today’s society. We live in a high stress world, and unfortunately, our bodies often pay the price. Stress can wreak havoc on the body.

22

|

UPTOWN MAGAZINE

Stress can cause tension in the neck and upper back (in particular in the upper trapezius muscles, the muscles that raise your shoulders toward your ears). Movement patterns and repetitive motion can also be culprits for tight muscles. If you sit at a desk all day, wear high heels, or repeat the same movements over and over throughout the day, your body will actually start to acclimate itself to those movement patterns, creating an imbalance of the muscles in your body. These imbalances can then cause pain and discomfort. Massage is a great way to ease some of the tension and imbalances in the muscles of your body. According to massagetherapy.com, massage is “the application of soft tissue manipulation techniques to the body, generally intended to reduce stress and fatigue while improving circulation” (http://www.massagetherapy.com/learnmore/index. php). This soft tissue manipulation can then alleviate aches and pains by releasing fatigued or tight muscles. There are many types of massages to choose from, and depending on your needs and body structure, certain types of massage may be better for your particular case. If you have a particular issue or ailment you wish to have addressed, it is best to mention it when you are scheduling your appointment, so you can be sure the massage therapist you will be working with is familiar with your story and what you wish to accomplish in your massage. BENEFITS OF MASSAGE Massages (especially first massages) can be an intimidating experience. For some, the thought of lying on a massage table undressed to one’s level of comfort and having a stranger in the room to massage can certainly make one uncomfortable. For others, it’s the price tag that can be intimidating. Massages often can cost upwards of $80-$100 per hour. With a steep price tag such as this, many have looked at massage as a luxury in the past. But with all of the stress, anxiety, and lack of physical activity in mainstream society today, it is hard to look past all the benefits of getting regular massages. According to Angela Coleman, LMT, a licensed massage therapist with 12 years of experience, massage helps to improve circulation, relieve stress, alleviate impingements and imbalances, relax the body, and provide athletes with relief. According to massagetherapy.com, massage has also been found to decrease anxiety and depression, reduce migraines, promote tissue regeneration, release endorphins, and even ease medicine dependence (http:// www.massagetherapy.com/learnmore/benefits. php). With such numerous benefits, it is easy to see why regular massage is becoming more and more of a necessity, as opposed to a luxury.

This includes physiological responses (like decreased heart rate), decreases in stress, and overall feeling of relaxation during and after the massage. The mechanical responses include an increase in circulation and lymph as well as the relaxing of soft tissue being manipulated. Together, these responses lead to the relaxed and rejuvenated feeling after leaving a massage. If you find yourself feeling tense or stressed, regular massages can help to decrease those feelings and help your body relax. How often you go is up to you. You may find that monthly massages are enough to help keep your body relaxed and your muscles in balance. Some, and often when you first begin getting massages, need more frequent massages (weekly or bi-weekly) to achieve relaxation and maintain the relaxation. WHAT TO EXPECT When looking for a massage therapist, a great way to start is by asking friends and family to refer you to a massage therapist they enjoyed. Once you have a few names, do your homework. You want to make sure that your massage therapist is credentialed with a license, and see if they have a specialization or additional certification in specific types of massage (like Thai massage or prenatal massage if that is what you are interested in). In addition, before the session begins, be sure you discuss with your massage therapist what your expectations are. Which areas of the body do you need additional work? What kind of pressure do you like (soft, firm, deep tissue)? Reaffirm the type of massage you are wishing to have that day. Then you’ll be able to lie back, relax, and enjoy your massage! “After the massage, be sure you drink plenty of water and avoid excessive exercise for 24 hours after the massage,” adds Coleman. As you can see, massage offers so many benefits. I encourage you to try a massage, if you have not done so already. You will certainly feel more relaxed and invigorated for your day, even after just one. With regular massages (once per month or every other month), you will start to feel your muscles change and begin to relax more readily. You may even find that you are able to stay more relaxed and focused throughout the day. Now go ahead and make the call. Find a licensed massage therapist near you and get ready for some relaxation! Your body and your mind will thank you! UT

MASSAGE: WHY IT WORKS Massage works by offering both mechanical and relaxation responses in the body according to The University of Minnesota Center for Spirituality and Healing’s website (http://www. takingcharge.csh.umn.edu/explore-healingpractices/massage-therapy/how-does-massagework). The relaxation response occurs naturally and is the nervous system’s response to touch. UPTOWN MAGAZINE

BRING THE

POOL HOUSE KITCHEN FROM ALSPAUGH KITCHEN & BATH

Bring the outdoors in with this unique pool house kitchen. Situated on a French Chateau’s property, this astonishing interior evokes tropical breezes and the sound of ocean waves with its deep, vibrant papaya-inspired colors. To incorporate this kitchen as an extension of the main house, the cabinet finish was worn for an aged look emulating the older style present in the main house. Plain, dark stained ceiling beams, a tall plaster hood and Spanish-inspired backsplash tile inject a punch of the Mediterranean into the tropical setting. NADA! ONTREAL! BY LINDA SPALL

A

s I walk by the Gothic and French 18th century architecture, the amazing formal traditional gardens, grand fountains and alluring outdoor cafes, I find it unfathomable that I am not in Paris! So much like that crown of European cities, the language is French and the ambiance is a brilliant mix of the new and the old. It takes a gentle waking from a dream to realize that I am in North America and in Canada’s beautiful city of Montreal!

In the southwest of the province of Quebec, Montreal sits where the St. Lawrence Seaway meets the Ottawa River. Though not the largest city in Canada (Toronto has that claim to fame) Montreal is the second largest with a population of about 4.1 million people in the metropolitan area. According to the 2006 census, 66.5% of the population considered French their first language and next came English at 13.2 percent! The amazing city of Montreal is the second largest French-speaking city in the world after Paris! Though dating back to 1642, the city was incorporated in 1832 and named after a hill called Mount Royal which stands about 751 feet above sea level. Now called Parc du Mont-Royal, you can do cold weather activities in the winter including ice skating in a pavilion, tobogganing and cross-country skiing. In the summer, you can enjoy picnics, sports, a community pool, and festivals and music events. This great escape is a perfect spot for a stroll while surrounded with trees and sculptures and the St. Joseph's Oratory, a beautiful house of prayer. No matter your passions, Montreal has something for you to do and see. Old Montreal section has wonderfully old buildings, the Notre Dame Basillica, restaurants, pubs, breweries and shops which line the streets as well as some modern buildings which just don’t seem to fit in. The cobblestone streets add to the charm and European feel. Place Jacques Cartier was formally the gardens of a French Marquis but is now a wide, divided boulevard named for the explorer who started it all, claiming the land as French back in 1535. In the warm weather, you can see street artists and vendors and if you are lucky, hear some lovely jazz that adds to the ambiance. Rue St. Paul, the oldest street in Montreal has very narrow streets, small inns and hotels, fashion designer boutiques and incredible gallery-like artisan shops full of unique blown glass, paintings and jewelry. Almost as grand as Notre Dame in Paris, the Basilica, completed in 1829, is true to the Gothic style and absolutely stunning. Breathtakingly beautiful, the fee is only $5 for adults and the power of the sentiment, the art, history and the peace is awesome. If you enjoy the water, you can take a day cruise of the St. Laurence Sea Way, take a dinner cruise or go whale watching! Take walking tours of Chinatown, a ghost tour, a tour of Old Montreal or a Jewish History walking tour! For more exercise, ride a bike on a 3 or 4 hour tour of Old Montreal. There is even a bike Montreal Food Truck tour! In fact, you can go on a 3-hour food tour of six food vendors in the city’s Mile End district. Try a Jewish Neighborhood Food Tour or “A Flavors of Old Montreal Tour”. I suggest that you try Quebec’s dish called Poutine 34

which is made with french fries and cheese curds topped with brown gravy. OK, it might not be healthy, however, Montreal has a competition every year in February called "La Poutine Week" where you can vote on who makes the best. You may remember The Montreal Tower Observatory as it was the symbol from the 1976 Olympics. The Space for Life complex includes three museums - a botanical garden and insectarium, a planetarium and the Montreal Biodome which is an indoor building where you can walk through four different ecosystems! Visit “Polar World”, the Laurentian forest, the tropical forest, the more local St. Lawrence Marine all in one place!. Not far away is the Montreal Botanical Garden which is filled not only with the flora and fauna, but with many birds that we don’t see here in the Mid-west. Anxious to shop? A favorite department store in Montreal is La Maison Simons which began in Quebec City in 1840 and is now called Simons.Located on St. Catherine Street, other well-known stores stand close by such as H & M and the Gap. Very fun is the Underground City which is a giant complex of metro stations, food courts, shopping malls and even cinemas. If you are ever in Montreal during the extreme cold winters, you understand why the Underground is the way to go! Montreal is only 1116 miles from St. Louis! Driving there is about 16 hours! No excuses! Go see your travel agent, book some hotels, take your passport and luggage, drive or fly to Montreal and have the trip of a lifetime! UT UPTOWN MAGAZINE

aplewood: A hub of award-winning food purveyors and craft brewers. Meet the butcher, the baker, candlestick maker and other talented craftspeople producing their wares in-shop. It’s not just a place to shop; it’s a shopping experience.

The community of craftspeople is growing, most recently Roughneck Beard Co. and NHB Knifeworks have hung their shingles out on Manchester adding to Maplewood’s hub of independently-owned and operated enterprises along the historic Route 66 where business is brewing. An industry leader, the Schlafly Bottleworks, is home to more than beer. The company has grown exponentially since it began brewing beer at 7260 Southwest Avenue around 2003. The facility was pivotal for the company but also for the growth of Historic Downtown Maplewood. Schlafly has emerged not only as a leading regional micro-brewery but serves as a catalyst for smaller business development.

The Schlafly Farmers Market, held every Wednesday April through October, offers fledging enterprises (not just farmers) the opportunity to sell their products and grow their businesses. While it hasn’t been the only market supporting artisan products, this type of opportunity propelled several Maplewood businesses like Kakao Chocolate, Traveling Tea, Pie Oh My! and I Scream Maplewood to the brick and mortar level. Start-up businesses, like Side Project Cellar and Strange Donuts add to the variety offered here. What about the butcher and the baker? Bolyard’s Meat and Provisions, the first full-service butcher to open shop in decades, debuted it’s store last year in one of Schlafly Corporation’s

newly renovated buildings (Schlafly Corporation is not affiliated with Schlafly Beer) that also houses a coffee roaster, Art House Coffees. Art House Coffees beans and brews are sold at Living Room, home to delicious baked goods and other delights. A wonderful pairing, Great Harvest Baking Co. and La Cosecha Coffee Roasters share a welcoming space on Manchester and while it’s a great place to start the day with a cup of fresh brewed coffee and a cinnamon roll, lunch is offered, too, and one can stock up on pantry supplies. Special occasions call for special attention to detail, make an appointment with Encore Baking Co. for a hand-crafted, made to order specialty cake. Let’s not forget the candlestick maker, Maven, offers an array of scented candles and a line of cosmetics, bath products and grooming products for women and men. This spring, Maven launched soap making classes that give customers an opportunity to have a real hands on experience. More events are offered at Sole Survivor, leather crafters, where you can find shoes, purses and belts all made by hand. Vom Fass and Larder Cupboard, both offer classes and tasting events featuring regional producers of products ranging from honey to gin to cheese to Big O Liqueur, a Maplewood business with an off-site production facility. Overall, Maplewood is home to more than 25 businesses with on-site development and production. While this seems like a trend, owner-operators have used Maplewood as a springboard for launching their products for years. Saint Louis Closet Co., celebrating 25 years in business, started with a 10,000 square foot building that housed a tiny sales and manufacturing facility.

Bursting at the seams, the company developed a stunning new facility around the corner on South Big Bend. That building now houses a world class showroom, sales center and manufacturing facility propelling the company to serve not just residential clients but to also develop a corporate level clientele. A rising star in the indie business world is Tiny Little Monster, a t-shirt design. Their website tells you, “We screen print, embroidery, and DTG right here . . .” What the website doesn’t tell you is that the company started in an apartment in Maplewood and now boasts a manufacturing facility and a retail shop (all in Maplewood). At first glance, one may detect a competitive market place. How can there be more than one baker or coffee roaster or brewer? The key is the style, character and process; something that is unique and different in each shop. Collaboration is more common here in the production of uncommon goods. Walking down Manchester and Sutton, one has the opportunity to taste, smell, touch and experience this and often times the products created by one craftsperson are often made with products from several businesses. Kakao Chocolate is mixed into a Pie Oh My! pie, Schlafly beer is baked into a Great Harvest Bread Co. bread and at Bolyard’s Meat and Provisions, Maven whips up a hand lotion from beef tallow by adding essential oils. Looking for a special item? Just ask the shopkeeper. If they don’t have what you are looking for, they will send you down the street to their neighbor. Looking for more than just shopping? Just come over to Historic Downtown Maplewood and have an experience. UT UPTOWN MAGAZINE

cool DRINKS IN A hot T OW N

St. Louis is famous for its long hot summers. In spite of the heat and humidity, we can still enjoy being outdoors. Cooling off is possible by indulging in simple pleasures like dipping our toes into a pool while licking ice cream cones, or cheering the Cardinals on with an ice cold beer. For those favoring a beverage with more pizazz, it’s time to head to one of the bars in town like Water Street, Bishops Post, Amigos Cantina, or Planters House. Just settle down and sip one of their favorite summertime coolers listed here. Ah yes, and then let those evening breezes do the rest.

ONE 19 NORTH While sitting over a glass of wine one evening at D’Vine Wine, I made a comment to my wife about how this space would make a great little restaurant. At the time, I never dreamed it would be a possibility for us. When the opportunity did present itself, being huge Tapas fans, my wife and I decided to put our spin on the Tapas scene in St. Louis and bring Tapas to Kirkwood. One 19 North Tapas and Wine Bar is the result of lots of research, hard work, and above all, a labor of love. We hope our place becomes the place many people choose to share special moments. We look forward to the future One 19 North holds and the endless possibilities to make it the best it can be. "We look forward to seeing you soon at One 19 North!"—Patrick and Ellen Carr

The summer heat is on with scorching temperatures in the 90s, a heat index in the 100s, and high humidity as well. To make matters worse many of us will find ourselves participating in outdoor activities all day long, and grilling our meals to avoid heating up the kitchen. Keeping cool requires either a swimming pool, or staying indoors with the a/c turned down to frigid levels, and keeping hydrated with an iced cold beverage. Nothing satisfies better than a cool drink on a scorching hot day, but not just any drink. You may prefer an ice cold frosty mug of beer, a tall glass of iced tea, refreshing lemonade, or just a simple glass of ice water to beat the heat. However, this refreshing Watermelon Cucumber Cooler is just what your body is craving to cool you down, and help maintain a PH balance suitable for your system. Both watermelon and

retired, but Christine Buck hasn't stopped! On April 22nd, Sheaftermay39have years in broadcasting, Christine signed off on KPLR-TV11 On her last day, numerous co-workers, friends and family surprised her with an on-air This is Your Life styled celebration as it focused on her TV career. Mayor Slay proclaimed April 22 as Christine Buck Day. Obviously, she enjoyed the attention with her usual wit. “I’ve gone from news flashes to hot flashes!” Over the years Christine’s positions included weather announcer, feature and news reporter, talk show host, and most recently, anchor for KPLR’s News at 4 and host for Afternoons On 11. It seems her natural ability was inherited from her famous father, the late great St. Louis sportscaster, Jack Buck. “My favorite book is dad’s That’s a Winner. He used to call me number 3.” She grew up with five siblings from Jack’s first marriage to Alyce Buck. Following graduation from Horton Watkins Ladue High School in 1970 she attended Park College and Kansas University. “I studied Speech and Drama but left after my third year. Little did I know I would later be applying drama in a news room.” In 1977, she was hired as a disc jockey in the Chase Park Plaza's Steeple Chase room. “As host, I was to interview celebrities performing at the Muny Opera and Fox Theatre.” That never happened. “Ted Koplar asked me to intern in the KPLR newsroom, I accepted, and was suddenly a news anchor. I was ill-prepared and scared to death, but kept working and learning. I struggled with that fight or flight instinct every day.” She literally stepped into the role of weathercaster when her predecessor walked out. “It turned out great because I honed my skills and learned the art of ad-libbing. I later won three Emmy Awards for Outstanding Weathercaster, but I didn't enjoy it enough to become a meteorologist. The Post headline was, ‘Christine Buck pulls upset’ but it should have said I was upset because… after bouncing off the stage with

my Emmy, I was told my dress was stuck in my panty hose ...thank goodness I was only 26 years old at the time.” Other job offers came in, but her preference was to remain at KPLR. Christine’s innate intelligence, grace and style served her well. “I figured as long as I was marketable I was doing something right as we went on to become the Number One Independent News station in the country. It felt good knowing I was part of that success.” Christine has been the recipient of numerous awards, including four regional EMMYs, the Silver Circle award from the National Academy of Television Arts & Science, Mid-America Chapter, and The Quest Award from the Missouri Broadcasting Association. Her dedication to the St. Louis community is reflected via her service to charitable organizations dealing with children’s issues. Included are the American Heart Association, Matthews Dickey Boys and Girls Club, Children’s Miracle Network and Kids In The Middle, for which she received the 2002 Champion of Kids Award. BackStoppers and Paralyzed Veterans are close to her heart as well. In 1980, Christine married architect David Mason. They have two sons, a daughter-in-law and a new granddaughter. “I’m over the moon with this beautiful baby girl named Vivian Alyce.” Christine is noted for her warmth and sense of humor. “I love to laugh and make others laugh. As dad used to say, ‘I like people, it’s as simple as that. I like people to like me and I work at it.’ I feel the same way.” As Jack Buck would say, “She’s a winner!” At 63, she’s happy to retire from the daily grind. “I’m grateful for my career and being able to do so many different jobs in one place. I was able to balance my career, a great marriage, and being a mom.” “Since retiring, I've been traveling, gardening, learning new technology and tossing around ideas to reinvent myself. So stay tuned!” UT UPTOWN MAGAZINE
