In this design studio we were asked to design a mediatheque for Marseille (France), the European Cultural Capital 2013. After analyzing the city I found out that Marseille contains a rich cultural program, but that it is hidden and unconnected. Instead of adding another building and leaving the rich cultural program scattered around Marseille, I decided to create an open system that reveals and articulates the excisting program and adds that what is missing. In order to do that, I needed to understand the role that a mediatheque has in contemporary society. To create this flexible, open system the three basis elements of architecture (lines, points & planes) are used on different scales.

DWELLING This residential tower in Breda marks the city center and investigates new social connections between the inhabitants. The tower houses seniors and students. The site was located next to a canal that marks the city center. Historically, a gate would mark this. In this design I tried to investigate the relationship and benefits for the inhabitants, even though they have completely different lifestyles. I tried to stimulate a sharing culture between the inhabitants. Students have mobility and energy while seniors usually have time and knowledge, a combination between this could benefit both.

PRIMARY SCHOOL
Some areas in the Netherlands are shrinking. This means that the populations of these areas are declining. These areas are mostly located in the north, east and the southwest of the Netherlands. The problem with declining population is that the facilities are leaving these towns as well, and this is reason for more inhabitants to leave those places; it becomes a vicious circle. This project is located in Biggekerke, which is one of the shrinking towns. I have designed a building that houses both the primary school and the community center. It also includes a nursery. The building is oriented around a big space, which is the main space for the community center and a small gymnastic space for the primary school. The idea is that a lot of interaction is possible in the big open space and the space surrounding it. This would intensify the community in this town.

FUTURE HOUSING The main brief of this competition was to show possibilities for future housing. Future housing needs to be flexible and adaptable in a sustainable way. The main solution that I put forward was the cradle-to-cradle principle. If it is not bad for the enviroment to demolish, reshape and rebuilt the built enviroment, we can keep adjusting the built enviroment to suit new demands. To show the possibilities I designed a block of houses that show various possibilites in plan and what materials and solutions would make this cradle-to-cradle and contribute to a sustainable enviroment.

facade and interior walls can be changed as much as needed, because they are not part of the structure
A block in the center of the house with the bathroom, toilet and kicthen are on a fixed position. It devides the space into two halfs. It also allows reconfiguration of the other wall without having to reconfigure the plumbing.
