Urban Studies - Urban Design (Exchange student) Applied Architecture Craft Education and Technology (BA) High school Primary school
Hello! I am an architecture student from Estonia. I am studying in Tallinn, the capital of our country, and currently taking an exchange semester in the Netherlands. I was born and raised in Tartu and moved to Tallinn because of my studies. I come from a small family with two parents and one older sister. Before I discovered architecture, I studied Craft Education and Technology in Tallinn University. In my graduation work, I dealt with the implementations between SolidEdge software and CNC milling machine. These studies were also the first time I came into contact with AutoCad and 3D-programs for. A wish to associate myself more with those programs was one of the main reasons why I decided to start my studying over, but this time in the architectural field. In this Portfolio, you can see most of my schoolwork projects in Tallinn University of Applied Sciences and also some individual projects I have attened to. During my study period, I have taken part in various workshops around Europe: including Estonia, the Netherlands and Spain. Right now, I am looking for an internship in the Netherlands for the next semester, to get more experience in working with real projects. My projects here are represented in chronological order so you can follow a story behind every new project. I hope my progress and dedication will come up by seeing this booklet. If my work has had any impact on you, do not hesitate to contact me and share your thoughts. My personal information can be found on the back of this Portfolio. I am very interested in new connections and great ideas! Best wishes, Erik
HAND-DRAWING / SKETCHES As many architects and lecturers claim "hand-drawing is the best tool in architecture", I decided to start my Portfolio with showing my sketches. Many of them are made in the beginning of my studies, in first two years, when most of our lectures were about hand-drawing. Before studies, I usually did not draw. The sketches you see on this page are the selection from my sketchbook, which I am the most proud of. ď€ ď€
ARCHITECTURAL GRAPHICS This is the drawing from Architectural Graphics lesson, which I made during my second year. It is an imagination of a park, created in an empty site, in Tallinn. The purpose of this drawing was actually not to be very realistic in design but to focuse more on visual impression and practice axonometric drawing.
This is another landscape project, which this time I worked together with my coursemate. Our goal was to rehabilitate the importance of church and the narrow park behind it. Right now, the church is quite isolated by the streets. Our design solution was to decrease the street level, or to be correct, remain it equal with the main street, because the church already stands on top of a small hill. This solution will provide enough height above the streets to build three pedestrian bridges. It will help to make the church and park more accessible. Also nature will be re-developed, old trees were removed close to church and new sort of trees or bushes were added.
BIRDWATCHING TOWER “RÄNNAK” The project was made together with three other students and was the first workshop project for us where we were asked to design a birdwatching tower. The site is located in Tallinn near the sea, between trees and close to wetlands, where most of the migratory birds are staying.
OLD TOWN
REED MUSTJÕE DISTRICT
We named our project as "Rännak", which means "The Journey". It is referring to our design to make a walking track instead of a tower. Visitors have a chance to take a step aside, find the birds, enjoy the view from observing points and then continue their previous route.
There are three observing points, every one on different level from 4 to 8 meters. Their directions were chosen by considering different birds, their habits and living environments. For visitors, these places also offer nice view to the surrounding landscape and to the city.
The track itselt is 170 meters long and made of wood and concrete. The pillars are leaned on purpose to make them match better with trees. While walking in this track, the visitors should feel the freedom and soaring just like the birds, when they fly.
CULTURAL CENTRE IN KALAMAJA DISTRICT This project was about making a cultural centre in a historically valued district located in Tallinn. All students were given the same site, which we also used in Architectural Graphics. The architectural shape in my design is derived from neighbour buildings. The site is including parking area, open space in front of the main entrance and skatepark, made of concrete, on the south edge.

VIEW FROM TÕLLU STREET
VIEW FROM PARKING LOT
The first floor is for administrative offices, toilets and technical rooms. Building is separated into two sides with glass section in the middle. Concrete blocks and wooden structures were used in load-bearing elements and facade is covered with bricks on the first and roof shingles on the second floor.
II FLOOR PLAN
Total area of the whole building is around 1200 square-meters. Second floor is hiding a 600 square-meter flexible hall, storage room and a stage, suitable for various events like concerts, theatres and speeches. This room can be divided into different parts. Remarkably, building does not have ordinary windows, but the light is ensured coming in from the glass section in the middle and from the sides. The purpose of this glass floor in the centre is also to provide more daylight into the atrium below.

BUS STOP IN VARBLA PARISH A small parish in Estonia asked for students to design a new bus stop for them. This project was easy and difficult at the same time. I remember the hours and days I spent on thinking about the shape and details, but the whole process was enjoyable. Keypoints while planning this bus stop, were opened and spacious design. Weather resistance is provided with using durable materials, like steel for the frame and metal sheet for covering.
RIGHT NOW
SIMPLE CONSTRUCTION PRINCIPLES GIVES THE POSSIBILITY IT CAN BE EASILY EXTENDED WITH NEW PARTS LIKE TOURIST INFORMATION POINT OR KIOSK..
PARK BENCH DESIGN This project I waited for a long time. I always get attracted by cantilevers and consoles in architecture and I have been trying to figure out something also in my works. Creating a "floating" bench was a good way for practice. The bench was meant for placing into the park and the number of them can be changed depending on the needs. The dimensions of the bench were originally taken from a rally seat. Shape was made of 8 millimeter sheet metal, which were covered with 10 millimeter of soft rubber, to add comfort while sitting. Bench is stabilized and linked to the ground with concrete foundation.
DIMENSIONS
PRIVATE HOUSE PROJECT AND INTERIOR This project was established in two stages. On our second year, we started working with the architectural design concept and continued this on the third year with interior designing.
The site is located in a residental area called Merivälja, on the edge of Tallinn. This neighbourhood is famous for its contemporary private dwellings. The task was to plan a house to a family, where one of the members is disabled in a wheelchair. For design, this means easy flows and spacious rooms must be required.
SITE PLAN 1:200
I FLOOR PLAN
The house is divided into five sections, which they all locate on different levels of height. It has two storeys, but no stairs or elevators used in it. All the movement between the levels is going through the ramps. Inside the house, there are four ramps, the longest one is 16.2 meters. In addition to ramps - wide terraces, large windows and outside glass-gallery between two sides of the house also add some more characteristics to the building.
II FLOOR PLAN
The interior concept was based on five elements of nature: earth, wood, metal, fire and water. Every level of this house holds one of those elements through their style, colors and materials used. Every room in a house should give an impression about, which nature element is referred to. Bright colors in some places or in furniture also will add effect and contrast between calm and more neutral colors, which are used around the building.

THE COMPETITION OF SCHOOLYARD IN KEHRA In spring 2016 Kehra Gymnasium announced a competition of a new schoolyard. My design was taking into account the list of things what students want and I tried to include them as much as possible. In my work, playground, ice-rink, swing set, bicycle park, outdoor lunch tables, sun-clock, benches and many more things can be found. The square is conceptually a big compass with a sun-clock in the centre, which will be also possible to replace with a christmas tree in the winter. On those compass directions in the square, movable benches will be placed. Bences move along by rail, with the wheels under ground. Depending on the needs of special events, these bences can be added, replaced, locked or removed.

APARTMENT BULDING PROJECT The apartment house to the suburb of Tallinn me and my coursemate designed together. The aim was to create a mix-used building, where first floor will have a room for small businesses, next two are for apartments and to the last floor we placed roofgarden and greenhouses for inhabitants. These flats are meant for people who would like to live in pedestrian-friendly and car-free environment.

URBAN PLANNING PROJECT IN TALLINN Co-authors: Kristel Puksand, Anni Vanemb, Anastasia Shabelnikova. Planning site is located in Tallinn, next to the sea, which used to be an enclosed area during Soviet times. It is bordered with harbour on the right and old prison on the left. In the middle of the site there is a former concert and sports venue. Significant parts in our proposal are huge park and strong viewing axes. The created park is suitable for concerts, walkings and picnics in the summer. Viewing corridors to the old prison, Seaplane Harbour maritime museum and old town of Tallinn are taken into account.
The building height in the area is up to 7 storeys, and large amount of them are offering the views to the park or to the sea. Commercial buildings are designed as city-blocks with courtyards opened to everyone. By sea promenade, everyone has chance to do cardio workouts or have a walk.

UIT FESTIVAL’S INSTALLATION COMPETITION This competition happened recently. Tartu City festival UIT was looking for installations. Two chosen installations will be placed somewhere in the city during the festival time one week in August. This years theme was "Reversed room". My concept was to lock nature inside a closed fence.

URBAN RESEARCH AND DESIGN IN BRUSSELS I am continuing with a project I made during my studies in Saxion University of Applied Sciences. Task here was to work with Molenbeek, a municipality in Brussels. Students were given a part of it and asked to do spatial research and give proposals of new living environment.
AREA 11
BRUSSELS
MOLENBEEK-SAINT-JEAN
CURRENT SITUATION Research showed that Molenbeek is a combination of many problems caused by urbanization. It has almost 100 000 inhabitants, which makes this one of the densiest municipalities in the city. As well, it also has highest unemployment precentage of all neighbourhoods in Brussels. Literally every third person of Molenbeek was jobless in year 2012. Nonetheless, predicted average population growth will be 14 000 new inhabitants until 2020.
DELHAIZE SUPERMARKET DELHAIZE DISTRIBUTION CENTRE
MUZENPARK
Large amount of area is under Delhaize company but there are some various small businesses around as well: like restaurants, car-services, health centres, gyms. Significant building nearby the area are old tobacco factory and primary school.
FLOOR AREA RATION (FAR) 1.3
LAND COVERAGE 63%
Common building typology is a city block and a courtyard. The average height is ranging between 2-3 storeys. The buildings next to the park and main road are more higher, some of them even up to 6 storeys. The FAR in this area is around 1.3. Land coverage in this area is 63%. The Muzenpark in the middle is the only public green space, which is accessible to everyone. Courtyards and inner spaces of the city blocks are more like semipublic or private and most of them seems unorganized.
The problems with the environment in the area are more or less connected to eachother. They are part of the network - existing together and they should be solved together.
DESIGN CONCEPT The concept is to resolve urban illness problems by increasing natural environment. Improving nature will improve the quality of the city’s space. Enough places for spending more time outside should be provided. Park also matters, because it will connect and integrate different functions from the surrounding. Opened buildings provide that life inside and outside spaces can work together. Inviting environment and safety neighbourhood for inhabitants, pedestrians and cyclists is substantial.
IMPLEMENTED CHANGES After implementing changes, Area 11 now will be recognisable for its large greenery and pedestrian-friendly environment. Muzenpark will be a part of bigger green network and plays significant role for the houses next to it. Their courtyards will be connected with the park and have public functions in it. People can use the park as a passage instead of streets.
BUILDING UNITS In this design 278 building units were removed and 394 were replaced or added. The building structure and height is now more balanced and related with eachother. Density level still remained high, but there is a notable decrease in land coverage rate, which will let more space for the nature and the public areas. The highest buildings are now 14 floors, which will add some contrast to this flat neighbourhood. It will become a landmark of the area and Muzenpark. Building blocks are modifed and demolished in some parts to create new routes between the buildings. Courtyards, which used to be enclosed, are now opened and offering more space for some new businesses. Because of larger green area, every location will be more accessible for people. Bigger park and new functions will give some opportunities to unemployed people to start business.
The private areas in the centre of city blocks are moved up to the roofs, where is enough space for every habitant. Rooftops offer good view down to the park and streets and catch a lot of sun. People who live there can use the rooftop as a private garden and grow goods in their greenhouses. The created square purpose is to bring "air" and another variety of public space to this spot. Even though that many building units were removed, the area is still flexible for growing population and can afford good quality lifestyle.
Hope you enjoyed! This was a quick overview of my studyings and works I have done. All projects were summarized and everything did not fit here but, if something you saw were interesting, feel free to contact me and I can share more materials to you.
