ERIK MEDINA DESIGN PORTFOLIO

2

Erik Medina Grown up in the Oklahoma City area and attending School at the University of Oklahoma, I have seen the rapid growth of this city. Having the desire and love of creating art from a young age with the combination of always being around construction are naturally what attracted me to architecture. Now after five years of studying design and being fortunate enough to have traveled to many places around the world. I feel thrilled about the idea of being part of this industry and learning as much as I can, hoping to one day have an influence in the built environment we live in

Unpredictable weather in this part of the country makes it an ideal place of a weather museum. One of the biggest factors of that is the wind in this region. This museum gives visitors the chance to experience nature through the aspect of wind. The museum is built up to engage visitors as the weather does, by first making them drive throw a tunnel to get to the site then walking on a bridge to get inside. The whole experience through the building leds to an ideal space that focuses of attention to nature, wind, and weather.

With a blooming metropolitan in OKC in the past decade the city is focusing on planning for the future. A plan for a denser urban downtown has led to new development. This new mixed use building helps this vision come to reality. With retail space provided on the ground floor, commercial offices on the second, and housing on the third level this becomes a canvas for a new urban environment. Parking is hidden out of sight, underground and the roof top of the garage becomes a public plaza with a mini soccer field provided to enhance life to the site.

2000 years of history are housed in this Museum. The altar of peace from the emperor Augustus to Mussolini’s propaganda tool and now a piece of art work. The space allows visitors to experience the altar and all its meanings. The creation of outdoor public space feeds off the piazzas in Rome. As a mass the building respects the connection to history across the Street with the mausoleum of Augustus. The museum balances the ancient, modern and present history of the eternal city and the Altar.

The idea of this building type takes inspiration from my traveling, mainly focusing on markets and bazaars. Creating a place to connect the education, arts and social networks of this college town. Artist are provided with workshops here and retail space to sell their craft. Housing is also made accessible on the top floor. This village is meant to help the local area with putting the art of craft back in the spot light and creating some culture.

Service Learning

This service learning program offered a unique opportunity to travel to Zambia and actually interact with the local people. Our objective was to provide Location - Lusaka, Zambia Family legacy Organization a master plan for their next orphanage village. We did so by organizing When - Summer 2014 research through focus groups, photo voice, and interviews with the children and staff. Our research took us to the compounds (slum neighborhoods) of Lusaka to see how the kids lived and how to improve, yet learn from them. The outcome was a master plan and house layout for the children in an effort to use design to improve their amazing lives.
