Design Intent: This intent of this design is to explore the relationship of my internal and external self to my notion of existence. The internal and external aspects of self are my personal experience and are finite. My philosophical notion of existence, both secular and spiritual, is constant yet changing, linear yet simultaneously cyclical, ageless and seemingly infinite. I want to express the self (internal and external) as a separate but participating element in my notion of existence. In the design, the expression of existence will enclose the expression of self. The structure and visual paths representative of existence can be effected by the structure of the internal/external self expression as well as stand alone as a separate entity. The characteristics of the internal and external self are contrasting. In the design the internal self will be represented by a complex rigid network of layered logic. The external self expression will appear playful, dynamic and light juxtaposed against the heavy convoluted composition of the internal self. An interesting theme to explore would be the wind manipulating the static structure of the internal self to create acoustic resonance(representative of how life/existence effects me) and the external self manipulating the wind to propel it's dynamic movement (my effect on life/existence). Another theme to explore is the cast shadows as a fleeting memory that creates there own narrative. Personal qualities and characteristics that will impact the “personality” of the abstract design: Internal Self: conflicted enigmatic curious logical driven convoluted structured

External Self: playful dynamic unbalanced tension sporadic adaptable direct

Existence: ageless constant infinite linear cyclical structured chaotic order

Possible Issues: • • • • • • • • •

environmentally rugged materials are more expensive learning curve with new materials cross winds could have a negative impact on desired kinetic paths more refined construction methods and mechanical connections are necessary engineering could become very complicated aesthetic cohesion of materials structure needs to have delicate elements that can withstand environmental conditions pubic access to the construction having to share the space with other students
