04 Architecture Update November 2014
I was impressed by the YouTube video of a 15-storey tower going up in China in just 30 days. Ignore the pompous music and marvel at the night-becomes-day pace. The trick, if you can call it that, lies in the prefabrication of steel and concrete blocks that can be hoisted into position, just as bricks form a wall. Construction materials and methods play a crucial role in defining the longevity and sturdiness of any building. Buildings constructed using quality raw material and appropriate construction technique are strong and offer value for money. Pre-engineered building (PEB) is one such construction option that has gained immense popularity lately. This fast and convenient construction option is used for both residential as well as commercial buildings. In India, almost 27 per cent of institutional and industrial buildings are preengineered steel structures and awareness about them is increasing. It has become possible because pre-engineered building system encompasses all the characteristics that are compatible to modern demands viz. speed, quality and value for money. Contrary to the traditional on-site construction, PEBs are delivered as a complete finished product to the site from a single supplier with a basic structural steel framework attached with factory finished cladding and roofing components. This assures construction speed and quality. The type of prefabricated components varies, based on size and complexity and on the amount of labour required for onsite assembly. Repeatable design is a key benefit in prefab buildings. The consistent production process allows factory engineers and technicians to continually monitor the process and make improvements whereever possible to deliver the best product. Due to a controlled production environment, the latest manufacturing technologies and the design flexibility help to produce high-quality (permanent or temporary) prefabricated buildings. Owing to the compliance with the building codes, the modular buildings are considered safe and reliable. PEBs are known in the real estate industry jargon, have been around for a long time, but in India they have taken off only over the last few years. The most important step is to increase the awareness amongst developers so that there can be a shift from conventional structures to PEBs. There are many ways to make the world green, which requires a mere shift in intention and commitment. With a well deserved support, PEBs promises a greener future ahead. Moreover, Computer aided Designs (CAD) and Computer Aided Manufacture (CAM) allow us to surrender the design process to machines. With futuristic concepts and avant-grade materials being introduced in every step of construction, it is but natural to the clients of architects and builders to expect state-of-the-art technologies and designs. In this issue, we are presenting few preengineered building projects which include the Discovery Centre at Bangalore by Architecture Discipline - an awe-inspiring design, a Sports Hub design in Singapore by DP Architects - the largest free spanning dome structure in the world, the Ordos Museum in China by MAD Architects, etc. These incredible designs may provoke your ideas, engendering more sustainable projects, cutting on time and construction cost. I hope you find these remarkable endeavours as enlightening as I did!

Ar. Sanjay Puri bags three coveted awards at WAF Ar. Sanjay Puri bags three coveted awards at the prestigious World Architecture Festival and the World Festival of Interiors - the largest annual festival and live awards programmes for the global architecture and design community. Agashiyan designed by Sanjay Puri Architects has won the 'Future Projects - Office' award at the World Architecture Festival (WAF) 2014. Situated amidst low rise developments in Ahmedabad, the office building is set to become the tallest building in the entire precinct. The building, selected by a jury of some of the world's most dynamic architects and designers, overcame competition from a shortlist of nine entries. The jury commended the project, saying "the design has a strong personality with creative use of semi-corridors and public spaces. It offers a fresh alternative approach to prevailing office building standards worldwide". Winning the 'Future Projects - Residential' award for The Village at Alibaug, Sanjay Puri says that his inspiration for a unique architectural vocabulary each time, comes from the fact that his office is driven by design and by the desire to create spaces that evoke new perceptions. "Architecture," he elaborates, "Must be exciting to experience, while being contextual, and sustainable and sculptural". The Village is an organic design solution that has emerged from its context and creates homes that become a part of the site. Depending upon the contours of the land, the built spaces step along them diagonally creating open terrace gardens outside each room, which are sheltered by pergolas in response to the arid hot climate of the site's location (average temperature of 30 to 35째C) throughout the year. The building overcame competition from a shortlist of 16 entries. Sanjay Puri Architects have also won the Award in the Bar & Restaurants category atI INSIDE: World Festival of Interiors for Auriga at Mumbai. Transformed from a disused warehouse, Auriga is a nightclub and restaurant that creates the feeling of being within a sculpture rather than looking at one. The nightclub on the ground floor is made up of a series of angular aluminium fins that fold to create the roof, the walls, bar and staircase. On the second floor, the restaurant is a more fluid design in contrast with the angular shapes downstairs, where thin wooden strips flow freely from the ceiling and walls to the bar and kitchen counters. Auriga has been designed and delivered on a small budget and in a sustainable manner, the lower floor is made from the waste metal left over from the manufacturing of air conditioning unitsand the upper level uses leftover wood from other projects.

Somany receives international recognition for Veil Craft (VC) Shield floor tiles
Somany Ceramics was presented with The American Ceramic Society's (AcerS) Corporate Technical Achievement Award 2014 for the development of Veil Craft (VC) Shield Floor Tiles. The award has shown the significant merit that Somany has offered to the society through commercialization of their technology. The award was received by Shreekant Somany, Chairman & Managing Director, Somany Ceramics and Deputy Chairman, Northern Region, Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). Somany Ceramics had commenced the research for these tiles to address the need for floor tiles that remain physically and visually unchanged,
014 Architecture Update November 2014
even in areas with heavy footfall. The research resulted in a process in which a chemical composition, christened "Veil Craft shield," could be coated on the tile above its print. This would not only significantly improve its abrasion resistance but also increase the glaze on the tile surface. The abrasion resistance of tiles is determined by rotation of an abrasive load on the surface and assessment of the wear by means of visual comparison of abraded test specimens and non-abraded tiles. The number of revolutions sustained without any change in visual appearance is the measure of abrasion resistance. Testing is done according to the grading system of Porcelain Enamel Institute, PEI, USA which categorizes glazed ceramic tiles according to their abrasion resistance.

Designed by Alexander Lorenz for the furniture dealers Herman Miller, Kivo can be used effective as boundary or a landmark to help with orientation and giving coherence to the workspace design. In his groundbreaking work The Image of the City, urban designer Kevin Lynch developed an original method and nomenclature to use in evaluating the impact of certain design elements on the individual's experience of a city. According to Lynch, a highly imageable place has unique qualities that stimulate the senses to encourage exploration, attention, and engagement. Workspaces should reflect the culture and character of an organization. Kivo® tiles that form the "skin" of this impactful screening device can be removed easily, allowing users to create a bespoke look and feel. Kivo® can be used to create Herman Miller Living Office® Settings - Haven and Cove. Kivo is made of less than 5 components but because it is based on a unique algorithmic formula, the permutations are as infinite as designer's own imagination. "We believe the hackable and sculptural character of Kivo will resonance strongly with leading creatives in Asia-Pacific. To kick off Alexander's promotional tour in Asia, the company has engaged Singaporean Sculptor Chong FahCheong to use Kivo to create a sculptural and impactful piece that acts as a landmark for Herman Miller at this year's event. Herman Miller provides design services with specially developed parametric software algorithms to plan and visualize customized Kivo® solutions. The Felt covers are available in a wide range of colors and textures. Herman Miller provides additional customization options for clients who want to have their own bespoke choices. Kivo® can be used to form variety of spaces, from compact to largescale statement installations. Its transformational nature allows users to form unique spatial structures, an almost endless variety of architectural combinations that will enable users to create compact haven like shelters for concentrative work to providing acoustical division in team clubhouse to surrounds for meeting spaces. Cylindrical rods are joined with precision-cast connectors to form equilateral triangular shapes that links up exponentially to form an organic exoskeleton. Acoustically high efficient covers made from environmentally friendly materials are then magnetically attached to on both sides of the structure.

he design of the Durga Puja Pavilion at Kolkata, designed by Square Consultancy Services, embodies how tradition can be preserved and celebrated within the modern mechanized society. It does not copy anachronistic elements from the past but mirrors the underlying values and respect for the tradition in its own way, to create public spaces that are self contained in their design, form, material and methods of construction. It shows technology is not against tradition, rather it fulfils it purpose and will continue to do so in amongst future generations, in their own original ways. The concept explores the volumetric aspects of space that can evoke the sensory

experience of the visitors by the change of scale, from human to monumental, through the formal composition of the various elements augmented by proper illumination. Durga puja is one of the biggest socio-cultural and religious festivals in India especially in Bengal. Millions of people congregate during the 4 day festival. It is also celebrated across the globe among the Bengali population. The temporary pavilions or pandals to house the idols are the works of creation by themselves. So far mostly the work has been taken up by the artists and local artisans who display wonderful creativity in the use of materials and incorporating innovative themes. As architects however the designers approached the design in a different way. The fact that these temporary pavilions act as attractors of public realm interested the designers. This is for the first time in Kolkata that an architectural firm has designed such a pavilion. Architecture has always been the mirror of the society. Historically it has represented the changes in the socio-cultural and political scenario. Durga Puja being one of the biggest socio-cultural and religious festival in India, the temporary pavilions or pandals set up to house the idols which are visited by millions of people in a course of 4-5 days, can be envisaged as the containers of the public realm. Like any other architectural edifice it also has a strong symbolic association which looks to find a modern expression remaining within the traditional and cultural legacy of the evolving society. The transformation from red to blue, from outside to inside, represents the journey from evil to good as one enters the sanctuary, drawing parallel to the tradition of using voluptuous, hedonistic sculptures outside the temple facades and complete feeling of holiness as one enters the inside sanctum. The four pillars, the trees of life, connect the earth to the heaven above. The inscriptions on the laser cut metal sheets reminds one of the stone inscriptions of the ancient temples that were meant to deliver religious, social and moral messages to the mass. fact file: project location client architect structural engineer commencement date completion date area cost

the egg-shaped auditorium amidst an urban plaza
Architecture Discipline was established in 2007 by Akshat Bhatt. Akshat believes that true advances in regional expression can only be achieved through critical intimacy with the subject. Architecture Discipline is a multi-disciplinary design studio that explores architecture through the scales of urban design, Architecture, Public art/Installations, Furniture and product design. The studio is engaged in the design of building typologies such as town halls, hotels, schools, offices, residences, sound/ video production studios and the public realm through installations. The Studio innovates formal arrangements, engineering, m.e.p. services and building physics parameters in order to advance the principles of sustainable design that are visible in the overall expression of the projects.
S
pread across 125 acres, The Discovery Centre, designed by Architecture Discipline at Bangalore, Karnataka, India, is envisaged as an architecture that exhibits cultural continuity and creates built form that would establish an identity even from the glimpse off the highway. A greenfield project purposed to demonstrate the upcoming progressive development at the Bhartiya city, Bangalore, the brief was to create a flexible city town hall that would also serve as the site office/sales office to illustrate the urban real-estate initiatives of the Bhartiya Group. The brief also
032 Architecture Update November 2014
demanded the exploration of the possibilities of sustainable design and sustainable development on an extremely tight budget. The development is planned as a place-making exercise to craft an environment to attract people. Also determined from the brief is the fact that the building is only placed for 6 years and post that, it would be relocated and moved down the site precinct and hence the building was conceived as an assemblage of parts. While typically, a building of this nature is placed at the edge of the site as an open flexible shell that is dressed up, in order to enhance the spatial connect with the visitors, the Discovery Centre is placed at the heart of the site to engage the visitor right through the development. The building had to tell a story, the concerns of the township and of course demonstrate the residential and commercial characteristics of the development. Optimizing the sky, light and air quality in Bangalore, the intent was to create a progressive design experience that would demonstrate the core value of a high quality of life in the development. Innovation is therefore crucial, and something distinctive had to be created that would not only stand out in form but also in colour, revealing a narrative for the township. In a derelict zone with no clear indication of what was to come in up in the imminent future, a palette that would enable all these aspects is adopted. An egg-shaped auditorium amidst an urban plaza is therefore conceived, which would attract the urban Indian family looking to be a

part of the township. Built with Glass fibre to introduce the narrative, the auditorium sits amidst a lotus pond that with its lotus motif pays homage to Indian design. Painted red, the egg on the plaza is aimed to bring the family together at one point. Red as a colour has the longest wavelength, and can be easily spotted from a distance. Every other element such as Golf carts, an ice-cream van, plasma screens are typological inserts that may get amended over time. A single flight staircase in red steel and regional granite stands-out as a distinct feature that brings visitors to itself. All other functions are planned as occurrences in an event that one happens to chance upon, inside the building. The Building opens out at a lower level, connecting the northsouth plaza, while creating a spill out space. A light weight building is hence built on compacted soil that is borrowed from the excavated foundation of the surrounding development. The structure uses longer life span materials in a modular manner for ease of composition and assembly. Earth-fill has been used to create the plinth, in order to use all the material that is dug out from the lower levels. The idea is to take modularity beyond its conventional theoretical understanding, to a more literal level, that enables each panel, each nut and bold to be assembled, dismantled and then reassembled processing the building like a machine. A large span built form is fashioned with the truss being the most economical way of
covering these large spans. Using a truss system also aids in keeping the roof light, brings light inside and also enables controlled surrounding views of the site. An architectural mesh and glass is hence used; frit printed glass is used in a manner that reduces internal heat gain, and in an environment like Bangalore, is easy to ventilate. Functionally, what is a created is a 90m long building with a 20m large span and a double height space and a deck that is suspended from the trusses to get a clear, multi-function space that can perform most functions (with a height of 4.5m). The structure is exposed in its entirety and painted with water-based paint to further allow for visual connections. In a conventional large span structure, the column sizes are fairly large; to avoid this, dynamic laced columns are used that enables the structure to become a part of the building skin. In a typical 6m bay, the column is perceived to be much thinner than it actually is because it partially embedded within the glass, whilst being integrated with the ventilation system. Sun breaker set at appropriate angles are employed both on the outside and the inside of the building. The clear Bangalore sun is exploited by the Photovoltaic farm that powers the plaza, the public area and the street lighting while Grey water is used for landscaping. A Thermal storage system is piggybacked on a 100 per cent fresh air, earth cooling system. Displacement ventilation Architecture Update November 2014

techniques are used to introduce cool air from below the floor; this in turn is extracted through the glass skin and layered the roof. Designed as an exhaust duct, the glass skin has a void in between; beyond a certain point, a pressurized glass cavity is created which exhausts the air. This air coming out is at around 27 degrees C, and hence, the convection heat transfer is completely negated. The flooring is such that it can be reused, including the materials used. Some parts of the building are false floor, owing to the under-floor ducts. Atypical elements such as a Robertson deck are used to ensure that even the deck slabs are removable and can be used again. Frit printed glass is used to not only dissipate heat, but also to play with patterns and enable changes in light transformation to make the building appear dynamic through the day. Grey on the outside and white inside, the multiple layers of the frit-printed glass creates a dynamic during the day and at night. The Lighting transforms itself with the change in the number of people occupying the plaza, and likewise at different times of the day. The Night lighting is dramatically different from the visual experience during the day, and is always unique with Interesting colours making the building come alive even at night. The building should react instantly to the environment; since seasons, time zones and durations create different experiences, the building should express that change. This dictates the choice of the local materials that are adopted to integrate with the regional context; steelwork that is typical of this area is manipulated for a responsive material palette which is fairly simple comprising of glass, steel, fabric and stone with no timber bring brought in from the outside. Locally available sadarali stone that is typically used to create archetypal freestanding walls to demarcate boundaries in the region is used to further exemplify the cultural continuity as a monolithic sculptural simple material palette comprising of glass, steel, fabric and stone

entity in the form of ramps, the water body etc. The longitudinal trusses are clad in a vinyl to express them as a visual element. The flora selection is also regional and berming from the excavated top soil is used to create more gathering space outside that also
maximized the moderate climate of the region. Ferns and grasses that change quickly in colour and texture are exploited as a canvas to further enhance the architectural dynamic that creates a unique experience on each visit.

harsh factory conditions very well. One green feature of inpod is that it is reusable. They have schemes for buy back as the product can be used over 50 years with little maintenance. Inpods are made of indigenous composite material, and are monolithic modular spaces. Though, pods can be set up fast, they are not at all makeshift, but stylish and luxurious. This is one of the key differentiators in the current Indian market for prefabricated structures. Inpod was built with the objective to overcome the many hassles of construction experienced in India. With inpod, one can have a beautiful world class home or office built and set up within a month. Inpod offices are ideal for work spaces, the material lends it qualities such as crack resistance, extreme robustness, and a tactile hygienic surface. The composite material makes it incredibly lightweight, however stronger than concrete. Their technology is similar to that of luxury yachts, giving the pods a similar finish. The team at inpod realised that smart solutions that look stylish are the need of the hour. While Narendra Modi and the current government is currently advocating such smart cities, they have already shown how prefabricated structures can look better than conventional buildings. The market is realising the benefits of innovative and superior technology products. The acceptance of prefabricated buildings is increasing. These structures would enable companies to complete projects efficiently and Text & images: courtesy, inpod

In June 2014 Singapore celebrated the opening of Asia's first integrated sports, leisure, entertainment and lifestyle destination, the Singapore Sports Hub, a combined effort of Arup, DP Architects and AECOM. Located on a stunning, central, 35-hectare waterfront site, Singapore Sports Hub provides a unique ecosystem of sporting, retail and leisure spaces, at the pivot between Singapore's expanding city centre and the wider public community. With a span of over 310 m, the National Stadium at the Sports Hub is the largest free spanning dome structure in the world.
t
he Sports Hub, Singapore is a key project in the Government of Singapore's urban redevelopment and sports facilities masterplan - 'Vision 2030' - promoting a more sustainable, healthy and active society at all levels of participation, nation-wide. Designed by Arup, DP Architects and AECOM for long-term legacy usage from the outset, the Sports Hub will set a new standard for adaptability and social integration. By providing premier venues for major sports events and inviting and inclusive public destination spaces, the Sports Hub is an elite, world-class sports destination that encourages everyday public participation.
MASTERPLAN The Sports Hub's precinct masterplan has been designed in close
collaboration between DP Architects, Arup and AECOM, in order to make most of the site's strategic location and to create a new landmark destination in terms of space, form and quality of experience. The extensive walkable precinct at Sports Hub links directly to local pedestrian and cycle networks and to Singapore's island-wide park connector system, providing excellent connectivity to the wider city centre waterfront, to Gardens by the Bay and to surrounding residential areas. The precinct masterplan creates a sequence of connected public spaces, scaled for both every day and major event modes and providing a very high quality of experience. spanning dome structure in the world - and an awe inspiring event space. As a new cultural icon, the design of the stadium has focused on creating a close relationship with the city by opening the interior seating bowl and roof towards the waterfront and the city skyline. This provides spectators with breath-taking views to the heart of the city, especially meaningful for the nation's annual spectacle, the National Day Parade. In form and massing, the National Stadium creates a distinctive silhouette and an identity for Singapore Sports Hub, complementing the nearby Singapore Indoor Stadium. Complementing the central National Stadium are two other key sports facilities, the OCBC Aquatic Centre and OCBC Arena. These mid-scale venues have been designed to achieve maximum flexibility enabling them to serve both the exacting standards of a world-championship sporting events as well as a diverse everyday leisure focused sports programme. The architectural design of the three main sports venues the National Stadium, OCBC Aquatic Centre and OCBC Arena -has been led by Arup Associates.
THE SOCIAL PLINTH In physical form and massing, a distinctive plinth architecture emerges and embraces the National Stadium, incorporating the OCBC Aquatic Centre and OCBC Arena as well as the existing Singapore Indoor Stadium. This contiguous podium provides a rich mix of non-elite sports programmes and uses, unifying all community sports, lifestyle and civic facilities into a dynamic whole. The plinth consists of a 41,000-Sq m of waterfront retail space - Kallang Wave Mall that provides attractive shopping and dining experiences for visitors; the 18,000 sqm of office space - new home to Sports SG and the local Sports associations; the Singapore Sports Museum and Sports Hub

GREEN PHILOSOPHY
Š DP Architects
Sports Hub integrates landscape, water systems and planting extensively, creating a natural setting and high-quality public waterfront environment. At the heart of the Sports Hub design philosophy, the major public and landscape realms at the Waterfront Promenade and Arrival Plazas extend and enhance the city's accessibility and green ambience. For comfort, character and further extending this holistic approach, the stadium incorporates sky terraces with planting and vertical greenery to the edge of the internal concourse areas, creating a totally unique and tropical experience.

Library, purposeful sports-themed destinations for the public; as well as the Splash-n-Surf waterpark and Water Sports Centre that provides the water-based elite training and leisure activities. This collection of amenities, with almost 2km of human-scaled built form and landscape, is organised within the Social Plinth, to serve as a counterpoint to the monumental scale of the stadium. The array of distinctive fine-grain, warm-hued, lattice-like architectural expression also creates an interesting dialogue of shade, light and tectonics, with the materiality of the sports venues. Bridging community sports and leisure, this community-based plinth further injects life and vibrancy through synergising the various indoor facilities with purpose-designed event plazas across the precinct, such as the scenic Stadium Riverside Walk and OCBC Square.
SPORTS PROMENADE
Š DP Architects
At the highest open public level, exemplifying the integration of sport and public space is the 'Sports Promenade'. This inspirational civic space links the National Stadium to various key sports venues, lifestyle destinations, public rooftop spaces and green spaces within the Sports Hub, offering stunning views out to the city and the surrounding waterfront. Principally designed to provide rain and sun-protection to spectators around the stadium, the design of 'Sports Promenade' was developed to realise the potential of this 1km connector space for everyday use, providing a fully accessible exercise area with a jogging track and fitness centres.
042 Architecture Update November 2014
Beyond maximising greenery and passive cooling measures, innovative engineering solutions have been integrated into the design to ensure minimal use of natural resources. The bowl cooling to the stadium achieves a 60 per cent reduction in energy use when compared to a conventional 'cooled stadium'. The energy used is offset by energy harnessed from renewable energy sources - making this a 'zero carbon' cooled stadium. Economy of means is a key characteristic of the main dome structure itself which uses one third of the steel weight per square metre when compared to other large span structures of this scale. In recognition of these achievements Sports Hub was awarded BCA Green Mark GoldPlus, an outstanding result for a major stadium and multi-sports facility, in comparison to its peers around the world.

he India Office Campus (IOC) for Cummins in Balewadi, Pune, by Venkatramanan Associates (VA) is designed as a collaborative workplace to create diverse spaces for varying functions. These could be for individual working, formal meetings or for casual interactions. The spaces are tailored to the needs of the people using them, thus encouraging them to take ownership of their workspaces and contribute to their vitality. The conventional workspace has a rigid layout where the users are limited to one specificworkstation where they perform variedfunctions. The Cummins collaborative office, however, turns this paradigm on its head - users move across multiple spaces, each of which are designed to support a specific function.Subsequently, the interior spaces express the ideas of negotiation, inclusion, and democratic decision-making. The designers identified the key elements to be addressed in the design of a collaborative workplace - the three Cs: Concentration - Focused, uninterrupted attention on tasks. The design of the entrance lobby is expressed through geometric forms - the use of acute and obtuse angles as opposed to straight surfaces helps create and maintain a visual interest for the observer. The space where most of the work takes place is termed "the engine". As the company continues to grow and change, the engine can be altered to accommodate that change. angles and horizons are softened, accentuated or altered by the inclusion of planters which help humanize what might otherwise be a cold, minimalist series of spaces. The furniture that suited this concept best was the 120 degree workstation module which by way of its form encourages interaction and flexibility. Cell ceilings along with grid ceilings, exposed brick work and the portals which frame the spaces humanize the large volumes.
COLOUR AND LIGHTING: Warm colours add "personality" and interest to a space, as they balance well with neutral colours. The bright and bold orange/green used for the flooring is contrasted with the Helsinki Oak laminate and the dark Walnut used for the wall surfaces. Simple, white down lit LED lighting contributes to uniformity and comfort in the office area. The lobby, with the suspended 'Vitra Mamma Cloud' light sculpture, is made more welcoming with the use of diffused warm white lighting. As urban spaces continue to evolve, designers need to find new ways to incorporate elements that can help adapt these spaces to suit the needs of the people who use them. The features which affect the performance of an office can range from architectural decisions such as articulating the transition between different rooms to something as minute as adding labels for storages. Our design concerns itself not just with objects, but with human activity and processes of change.

He is the first Chinese architect who won an overseas landmark-building project. Ma graduated from the Beijing Institute of Civil Engineering and Architecture, and holds a Master's Degree in Architecture from Yale University. He is currently a professor in Beijing University of Civil Engineering and Architecture. As the founder and principal of MAD Architects, Ma leads design across various scales. In recent years, many of Ma's designs follow his concept of the "Shanshui City", which is his vision to create a new balance among society, the city and the environment through new forms of architecture. Since designing the "Floating Island" in 2002, Ma has been putting this great idea into a world-wide practice through a series of imaginative works, including Absolute Towers, Hutong Bubble 32, Ordos Museum, China Wood Sculpture Museum, Fake Hills etc. In 2004, Ma was selected as the principal designer for Lucas Museum of Narrative Art (LMNA) in Chicago, which made him the first Chinese architect to design overseas culture landmark. Meanwhile, he has been exploring with public the cultural values of cities and architectures through domestic and international solo exhibitions, publications and art works. He has won many international awards for architecture & design.

he design for the Familiar yet distinct, the City and Art museum in Ordos, China, designed by MAD Architects appears to have either landed in the desert from another world or to always have existed. From atop a dune-like urban plaza, the building is enriched with a convergence of naturalistic interiors, bathed in light. The result is a timeless architecture in a modern city of ruins. Six years ago, the Inner Mongolia Ordos was an extended landscape of the majestic Gobi desert. Today, it is an urban centre mired in a common controversy in modern Chinese civilization: the conflict between the people's long standing traditions and their dreams of the future. Architects were asked to develop the urban landscape and yet needed to be mindful of the delicate sustenance of minority cultures and its future potentials. In 2005, the local bureaucrats established a new master plan for its city development. Upon the initialization of this master plan, MAD was commissioned by the Ordos city government to conceive a museum to be a centerpiece to the new great city. Influenced by Buckminster Fuller's geodesic domes, MAD envisioned a mysterious abstract form capable of fostering an alternate, timeless development of Chinese tradition and future. Whilst the surface of this shape functions as a metal container critical to protect the interior from the harsh winters and frequent sand storms of the region, metaphorically this external layer operates as a shield protecting the precious culture and history of the city from the unknown growth of the city. The museum appears to float over a waving sand hill, a gesture saluting the landscapes which have now been supplanted by the streets and buildings of the new cityscape. This plaza is now a favorite amongst the locals who gather their families and friends to explore, play or lounge in the pleasant landscape.

Entering the museum presents visitors with a strong contrast to the exterior: an airy monumental cave flushed with natural light through skylights. The cave links to a canyon which carves out a void between the galleries and exhibition hall and is brightly illuminated at the top. Patrons maneuver along the base of these primitive surroundings and through the light across mid-air tectonic bridges, reminiscent of the intersection of the past and the future of the Gobi landscape. Visitors will repeatedly cross these sky bridges and reflect upon their journey from a variety of picturesque vantages. The local community, as well, is encouraged to pass through the base of the central canyon which connects the two public entries at opposite ends without entering the exhibition hall or galleries. The varying internalized flows of circulation are guided by a succession of light and shadow, at times mysteriously shaded and occasionally brilliantly bright yet consistently engaging. ith $5,000 budget granted from the Department of Architecture, Ball State University, Prof. Gernot Riether and Prof. Andrew Wit scouted for possible locations for the Underwood-Pavilion prior to their summer studio that they co-taught. The summer studio, a fiveweek intense Digital Design Built course open to graduate students, dedicated to design, built the pavilion as a light-weight structure in an extremely short time frame of five weeks at Muncie, Indiana, U.S.A. Teaming up with the local art community the pavilion set off Muncie's First Thursday Art Event and expanded it into the post-industrial landscape that is surrounding the city. This required negotiations with property owners as private property was turned into art-destinations. Located at a narrow stretch of land between two manmade fishing ponds the pavilion draws attention to its surrounding landscape by framing views of the lake, apple trees and a nearby forest. The pavilion is constructed from 56 different modules that are forming a self-shading structural system creating a cool environment in the hot summer months of Indiana. Lightweight structure: The Underwood pavilion's modules were developed from different variations of a 3strut Tensegrity module. Varying the distance between the upper face and the lower face and varying the scale between the upper face and the lower face of the module informed the curvature of the envelope. These variations also generated a different rotation within each module causing the envelope to twist in different directions. The structural simulation engines Rhino Membrane and Kangaroo were essential tools in the form finding process of the pavilion's structure. The final Tensegrity state of a module could only be reached with all cables in tension and all bars in compression. The entire system remained loose with all members being connected except one. This

Skipping every second module in every second row created smaller and larger openings that were placed to frame the environment. Elastan, an eco-friendly polymer originally used for sportswear was adapted to create the pavilion's self-shading envelope. Elastan is created from filaments that are more durable than non-synthetic materials such as rubber. It can be produced from 100 per cent renewably sourced raw material such as recycled polyester. Once all modules were connected each module was dressed with an elastic fabric to form a minimal volume that was defined by the location of the struts and the elastic quality of the fabric. Tension only: The elastic fabric was also used to create a visual effect of flotation. Usually most of the visible elements of buildings (walls, columns, etc.) are in compression. All elements that are visible at the Underwood Pavilion: the fabric and the cables are in tension. Looking at tension only creates the perception of floating that visually underlines the main idea of the pavilion as a lightweight structure. Tensegrity structures have large advantages compared to other structural systems. Using predominantly tension members they are lighter and stronger than conventional systems. As temporary lightweight structure the Underwood pavilion additionally takes advantage of the self-erecting behavior of Tensegrity systems. Using physics engines as a design tool shows how Tensegrity systems can be parameterized to adapt to site and program.

Pre-Engineered Buildings healthcare design Chris Wilkinson OBE is one of the UK's leading architects. Together with Jim Eyre OBE he leads Wilkinson Eyre Architects, a London-based practice that designs high profile buildings, cities and infrastructure around the world. Chris' contribution to architecture has been recognised by the award of an OBE in the Millennium Honours List, election to the Royal Academy of Arts in 2006, and an Honorary Fellowship of the American Institute of Architecture in 2007. He was appointed as Architectural Commissioner of English Heritage in 2006, made Patron of the Civic Trust Awards in 2009, and has been awarded Honorary Doctorates by Westminster University and Oxford Brookes University. In addition, he was voted Designer of the Year by CSD and the Design Council in 1996 and FX Designer of the Year in 2001.Wilkinson Eyre is currently transforming one of the great landmarks on the London skyline - Battersea Power Station. The practice also designed the Emirates Air Line, the Alpine House at Kew Gardens and the much loved Bridge of Aspiration at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden. In July Chris' design for the Maggie's Centre in Oxford was revealed, the latest in a series by the world's most famous architects.

The Centre is located on a steep slope in a little haven of trees in the North West corner of the hospital grounds. In response to this setting, Chris Wilkinson developed the design concept of a tree house which nestles amongst the trees with minimal disruption to the flora and fauna below. The Centre is supported on timber piloti, raised up by four metres to meet the road level, and connected by a footbridge. A terrace leads visitors around and into the Centre, with views through the trees to a small brook and the nature reserve beyond.

Maggie's offers free emotional, practical and social support to people with cancer and their family and friends. Built in the grounds of specialist NHS cancer hospitals, these centres are warm and welcoming places, with qualified professionals on hand to offer a programme of support that has been shown to improve physical and emotional wellbeing. Great design and architecture is vital to the care Maggie's offers and so they work with world-renowned architects like Zaha Hadid, Richard Rogers and Norman Foster, who give their time for little or nothing. Their skills deliver the calm, uplifting environments so important to the people who visit and work in their centres.

he design for Maggie's Oxford at the Patricia Thompson Building, at Oxford, United Kingdom , designed by Wilkinson Eyre Architects, encapsulates the philosophy and principles on which the Maggie’s Centres are based. The tree house concept maximises the relationship between the internal space and the external landscape offering discreet spaces for relaxation, information and therapy. It provides a sympathetic and caring retreat, in tune with its surroundings. It is not like a house or a clinic but has a special identity that is a Maggie's Centre.
ARCHITECTURAL FORM The key to the design concept was to create a building that felt warm and friendly. The Centre needed to be tranquil, slightly neutral and not in any way corporate or clinical. This was addressed by the angular geometry of the architectural form which has added movement and life to the spaces within. A series of three-dimensional planes fragment, fold and wrap into each other around a tripartite plan which allows the structure to fit among the existing trees - and visitors to escape visually into the landscape. The floor and roof planes rotate geometrically on top of one of another so that the folds and wrapping of the roof walls and floor inform the internal planning and vice versa. External terraces and steps into the woodland allow visitors the opportunity to explore and immerse themselves further.

The Centre has been constructed from timber all the way to the ground where informal clusters of tilted columns support the building and evoke a thicket of tree trunks in the woods.
In order to cause minimal disruption to the flora and fauna, the building was constructed in crossply laminated timber panels erected on glulam timber columns fixed to concealed screw piles below the ground. The construction methodology developed with engineers Alan Baxter Associates allowed the components to be prefabricated off site, minimising disruption during construction. Using specialist software which directly inputs into CNC cutting machines, a set of bespoke components with limited repetition was produced to fit the precisely defined geometry of the building. The design interacts with and embraces nature to provide comfort and reassurance for visitors in their time of need.
LAYOUT AND INTERNAL SPACES The internal plan is composed of three wings emanating from a central space which is a direct interpretation of the Maggie's brief, allowing separate areas for information, emotional support and relaxation. All are

The surface materials are largely timber and glass which are friendly and familiar as well as being self-finished and easy to maintain. While modern, they will weather naturally and sit comfortably within the landscape. linked to the central welcoming heart of the building which has a kitchen, dining table and stove. The layout of the spaces is free and informal. The Centre is accessed via the library which is discreetly overlooked by the office so that there is no need for a formal reception. Visitors are naturally drawn into the central heart of the building. From here there is direct access to three consulting rooms of differing sizes in the north wing, one large enough for group therapy sessions. The west wing is an informal relaxation area which opens onto a terrace overlooking the stream and fields beyond. This space is furnished with comfortable sofas and individual spaces in alcoves where visitors can read literature, make notes, or simply be contemplative in a peaceful and pleasant setting.

The size and shape of each window and glazed panel was carefully considered in relation to particular views and a timber trellis overlays some of the panels to provide shade and privacy. Slot openings in the roof allow shafts of sunlight into the spaces and openings in the floor provide views through to the landscape below. Together, these elements combine to create a strong relationship between the internal spaces and the natural surroundings, offering views and light from every aspect. Considered details have further enhanced the Centre's interior spaces: the kitchen table (designed by Wilkinson Eyre) and the colourful rug in the relaxation area (designed by Diana Edmunds) are bespoke designs, while delicate surface lines etched into the timber walls gently reinforce the building's geometry.

Prefabricated Design
Prefabs Struggle to Consider Vernacular Differences Pradeep Misra, Chairman & Managing Director, REPL refabricated design has come to be known as a fast, green, and costefficient way to create buildings. Although this technique has most prominently been used with small residential structures, it's now taken a turn towards greater, larger projects. Prefabricated design has been around since at least the 1940's, but has lately seen resurgence in popularity. By assembling off-site, prefab gives homebuyers attractive alternatives to the standard residential developments that have become commonplace. While prefabricated homes are not without their disadvantages, they are an interesting component of the post-housing bubble residential market.
P Pre-fabrication has plenty of advantages - particularly if one lives by the adage that "time is money" since it promises lower construction cost, a quicker schedule, and less waste. However, when human safety is concerned, quality cannot be sacrificed for efficiency.
Over the years, architects have pushed prefab into some startling new directions, designing futuristic pod houses and modernist boxes on stilts that can be packed up and moved to a new site whenever the owner wants. To see them is to be dazzled by their sheer inventiveness. This is especially true in India where today, prefabrication has become synonymous with durable, modern, and western construction methods. Materials are used more efficiently and are safer from climatic damage. They can be
reused in the material stream. Material advances in the prefabrication housing market have also helped to mitigate material failures. The use of fly ash in concrete increases its workability and improves thermal performance. Material such as fly ash is captured from the coal burning process that generates electricity and then reused to manufacture more durable and stable building materials in a factory environment. In India there are six distinct climate zones ranging from cold and dry to warm and wet. Therefore, India's architecture is varied in its use of materials, style of construction and cultural difference that cannot be generalized. Prefabrication in a technology transfer mode struggles take into consideration these vernacular differences. Prefabrication has some advantages: It is typically cheaper to build than on-site construction and it usually takes less time for construction to be complete. Pre-fab structures are very sustainable because they reduce the amount of waste produced. However, prefabrication can have its disadvantages - First of all, there can be more risk with the prefabrication technique than in
traditional construction: since the majority of the large building components are constructed off-site, there is a great amount of trust given to the manufacturer to produce precisely what is needed. One single error can eventually put the entire building in danger. Workers are constructing under an intense time limit in order to complete the task quickly, and this can lead to a higher potential of mistakes being made compared to traditional on-site methods not typically associated with rapid completion times. In conclusion, pre-fabrication has plenty of advantages - particularly if one lives by the adage that "time is money" since it promises lower construction cost, a quicker schedule, and less waste. However, when human safety is concerned, quality cannot be sacrificed for efficiency (not to mention that, if, in the name of safety, any changes do need to be made to prefabricated materials once they arrive on site, it is an expensive and time-consuming fix). As pre-fabrication continues to boom, utmost care must be taken to ensure its quality as with traditional construction or else all the time and money gained will result in a very real, human cost.
Pradeep Misra, Chairman & Managing Director, REPL is a Civil Engineer from IET, Lucknow. He has a dream to establish an organization which can provide world class integrated technical solutions to the real estate industry. Till 1990s government agencies were the lead players in providing housing to all strata of India's population, even after all efforts, demand and supply gap are growing year by year. National Housing Policy was framed by Government of India in 2001 and it was declared that government will work as a facilitator and private sector will work as provider of housing need. Visualizing the need of a professional organization to cater end to end advisory need of urbanization process for both government and private sector Misra established Rudrabhishek Enterprises (REPL) in 1992.

Efficient Prefabrication & Management of Buildings with BIM Philip Janssens, Manager, Victaulic Construction Piping Services o boost productivity beyond what is achievable on the jobsite, prefab techniques are increasingly being adopted. THE BEGINNINGS OF BIM BIM is a process that enables architects, engineers, contractors and owners to collaborate throughout the lifecycle of a building: from earliest design concept to demolition of the building. It works on the principal of spending time and effort at the very outset to reduce the risk of problems onsite that can be difficult to resolve, cause delays and incur additional costs. More than just 3D drawings, BIM concepts include collaboration between trades that have previously worked independently. Utilizing software such as Revit, a 3D computer model that represents the physical and functional characteristics of a facility can be created. This becomes a visual communication tool shared by all stakeholders that can be used to effectively manage project information for consistent, accurate and coordinated models. In practice, each partner owns their own model. The coordination team brings together the models, integrates the information and carries out clash detection to identify any pipe collisions or interferences within the model. Once clash detection is run, trades will come together in coordination meetings to discuss and trouble-shoot issues that were found in the models.
This allows for open communications and quick resolution during planning stages. Since it forms a reliable basis for decisions regarding design details, scheduling and clash detection, BIMled projects can be planned and executed more quickly, economically and sustainably.

already made BIM mandatory for publicly-funded building projects.
PREFABRICATION AND BENEFITS
Although the concept of BIM got off to a slow start, it is now gaining ground globally, including in India. Regulation in many states of the USA has led to a doubling of BIM adoption over the last five years, whilst the Netherlands has seen a threefold rise from under 10 per cent to over 30 per cent of projects using BIM in the same period. The greatest rate of increase, however, has been in the UK where BIM-led initiatives have risen from under 5 per cent to over 30 per cent of building and infrastructure projects. BIM is now standard practice for many leading construction companies and, as its use gathers pace, supply chain companies are responding.
Compared with traditional building contracts, BIM creates standardisation and a level playing field for all, making cost estimations more accurate and the comparison of quotes easier. The traditional bidding process starts with conceptual designs submitted by the consultant on which contractors base their quote. This often requires bidding contractors to seek more information from the engineering office, make assumptions or take on a large measure of responsibility. Having all the information contained clearly and accurately within the model in advance means the job can be priced easily, helping owners to compare bids and removing the element of risk for clients and contractors alike. Changes can still be made at a later stage if required, but unnecessary change orders that can add significant cost to the project and delay completion are eliminated.
There is also a recent EU directive to encourage, and even mandate, its adoption in member states by 2016. And the UK, Netherlands and Norway are among the countries that have

components need to be installed. As a result, downtime is avoided, productivity boosted and owners can see how quickly the work will progress. Further down the line, BIM can advise what maintenance is needed - when a component needs to be replaced or a piece of equipment serviced, for instance - helping owners draw up a maintenance schedule to ensure optimum system performance and thereby contain costs. This facility can be especially useful for retrofits. The advantages of prefabrication are widely acknowledged throughout the

model is a powerful visual representation of how a building and its services fit together - useful for contractors and engineers to 'walk' clients through so they can see how things are positioned. With Revit, users can draw all piping and other disciplines from the building to the ducting and electrical work in one model and co-ordinate to ensure no collisions or interferences between the different systems or trades. The 3D model is a powerful visual representation of how a building and its services fit together - useful for contractors and engineers to 'walk' clients through so they can see how things are positioned. It confirms, for example, that prefabricated sections can be dropped in as required and that there are clear access routes for maintenance staff - or otherwise clearly shows if there are clashes, in a way that would not be possible with other methods. Where changes are needed they can be made safely, quickly and easily. For instance, if an elbow needs to be moved to avoid hitting another component this can be done in minutes using the model but might take hours in the field.
Many important global projects that have used the Revit BIM-enabled CAD library from Victaulic including the new London Heathrow Airport Terminal 2. industry and prefabricating using grooved pipe joining has proved to deliver additional benefits. Not surprisingly, organisations that many years ago latched on to prefabrication as a strategy to minimise risk, increase productivity and save time on the jobsite are now among the first to have embraced BIM. It is a prime enabler for lean construction that can be relied upon to facilitate prefabrication: contractors can use the 100 per cent correct model to determine cut lengths of piping and start prefabricating assemblies with total confidence. Just as prefabricating in ideal conditions off site delivers greater efficiency on site, so using BIM removes uncertainty and eliminates problems during construction and installation. The philosophy is the same: spend time at the earlier stages to reduce problems and time spent in the field where the risk is greatest.
THE ROLE OF THE MANUFACTURER Leading manufacturers in the pipejoining sector have taken steps to allow users to effectively integrate products
062 Architecture Update November 2014
into BIM software systems. At an individual project level, company experts work with designers who will include systems in their drawings to help them understand how the products can be best used and routed in specific software. For example, Victaulic works with the major BIM software manufacturers, including Autodesk, Bentley, Progman and Stabiplan, to ensure that its products can easily be used within their relevant packages such as AutoCAD, Revit MEP, Fabrication, MagiCAD and StabiCAD. BIM confirms, for example, that prefabricated sections can be dropped in as required and that there are clear access routes for maintenance staff - or otherwise clearly shows if there are clashes, in a way that would not be possible with other methods.
LIFETIME ADVANTAGES Where changes are needed they can be made safely, quickly and easily, for instance, if an elbow needs to be moved to avoid hitting another component, this can be done in minutes using the model but might take hours in the field. Clicking on a
component identifies the product and gives dimensions. If the designer changes the diameter the component also changes and the layout drawing and bill of materials are automatically updated. This would be much more complicated, timeconsuming and costly with another method. With BIM software programs such as Revit, users can draw all piping and other disciplines from the building to the ducting and electrical work in one model and co-ordinate to ensure no collisions or interferences between the different systems or trades. The 3D
Projects that have produced drawings using the extensive Revit BIM-enabled Victaulic CAD library include the London Heathrow Airport New Terminal 2 - recent Building Services Project of the Year finalist, and the Weggeler centre, Almelo - a flagship BIM project in the Netherlands. Just as CAD and prefabrication have revolutionised the design and construction functions and become the industry norm, so BIM is set to become standard practice for the efficient wholelife management of building projects. With a growing number of products and support available to partners, the way forward to project success is clear. Using BIM to focus on design detail and pre-construction work delivers right-first-time results on the job and allows for easy maintenance and smooth operation for the life of the building.
Philip Janssens studied electro mechanics and has worked for Victaulic for more than 15 years. He is currently manager of Construction Piping Services (CPS), the project department within Victaulic that offers a broad range of services to installers and engineers to support them during the different phases of a construction project. The Victaulic CPS department is based in Belgium but also has a team of specialists in Mumbai who handle project design, technical and financial analysis, 3D modelling, installation plans and project management. Focus is on enhancing the cooperation between the different parties with an eye on increased productivity, efficiency and quality, from design to construction. Pre-Engineered Buildings:
Potential in Construction Sector Rohit Mohan, Head of Design, Emaar MGF
ndia is one of the fastest growing economies in the world. Apart from agriculture, the credit goes to the construction and manufacturing sector, as they are also driving the GDP and the overall economic system of the country. To support persistent development in the construction industry new technologies are evolving everyday and one of the novel concepts is Pre-engineered Buildings (PEBs). Contrary to the traditional on-site construction, PEBs are delivered as a complete finished product to the site from a single supplier with a basic structural steel framework attached with factory finished cladding and roofing components. Pre-fabrication is an offsite manufacturing process that takes place in a specialized area in which various materials and building systems are joined to form a component or part of a larger final installation. Work is done at a remote location for increase in construction speed and quality. The type of prefabricated components varies, based on size and complexity and on the amount of labour required for onsite assembly.
I
Prefabricated / Preengineered buildings use high quantity of recycled materials and saves time and cost as only assembling of building materials are required at the project site.
PEB comprises of structural system, sandwich panels, roofing, exterior facade and accessories. The concept is based on a design which usually involves a thorough project information data and details like building parameters, grade of steel, welding, anchor bolts, roof & wall liner/panel, insulation, sky light, gutters, facia, mezzanine, ridge ventilation, etc. Pre-fabricated building system consists of a series of integrated, carefully designed, factory-fabricated components. The typical prefabricated building system is composed of primary and secondary framing, roofing, wall, staircases and accessory subsystems which are manufactured to give the building versatility, stability, protection, performance predictability and life cycle value. Pre-engineered building can be of concrete, wooden or steel structure. In India, almost 27 per cent of institutional and industrial buildings are preengineered steel structures and awareness about them is increasing.

064 Architecture Update November 2014
These days architects are incorporating modern designs into the pre-fabricated houses. Prefab housing should not be compared to a mobile home in terms of appearance, but to that of a complex modern design. There has been an increase in the use of "green" materials in the construction of prefab houses. Since these homes are built in parts, it is easy for an owner to add additional rooms or even solar panels to the roofs. Many prefab houses can be customized to the specific location and climate, making it more flexible and modern. The common examples of PEBs are ware houses, construction site offices, metro rail overhead track lines, flyovers, foot over bridges, hangers etc. Recently, a renowned contractor constructed first prefabricated high rise residential tower of India in Mumbai.

DESIGN Repeatable design is a key benefit in prefab buildings. The consistent production process allows factory engineers and technicians to continually monitor the process and make improvements where ever possible to deliver the best product. Due to a controlled production environment, the latest manufacturing technologies and the design flexibility helps to produce high-quality (permanent or temporary) prefabricated buildings. Also unique to prefab building is the ability to simultaneously construct a building's floors, walls, ceilings, rafters and roofs. During conventional construction, walls cannot be set until floors are in position, and ceilings and rafters cannot be added until walls are erected. On the other hand, with modern modular methods of construction walls, floors, ceilings and rafters are all built at the same time, and then brought together in the same factory to form a building. This process brings modular construction time half to that of conventional, stick-built construction. Electrical wiring and plumbing are installed before the unit is

ready for transport. Redundant quality controls confirm spot-on manufacturing accuracy before every prefabricated building part leaves the factory. ASSEMBLING AND ONSITE PREPARATION Modular construction takes multi-tasking to a whole new level. While the prefabricated building modules are built in the factory, the construction services professionals, on site prepare the foundation to receive the complete modules. The land is graded, cement foundation poured and piers are placed to support the complete prefab offices. TRANSPORTATION AND ERECTION With all modules complete and shipped to the site, the foundation prepped and ready, the prefabricated modular buildings are set into place and connected to the foundation and each other for a solid and durable completed building. Utilities are connected and exterior finishes are added, perfectly matched to neighbouring buildings. The resulting prefabricated modular buildings are environment-friendly, with the all the same architectural aesthetics, one would expect from conventional buildings. ADVANTAGES OF PREFABRICATED BUILDINGS Factory-control makes the best use

of materials and produces less waste Reduced energy consumption compared to on-site construction Reduce disruption with offsite manufacturing and quick onsite modification More Flexible in terms of design adjustments and modifications. Saves cost and time - requires less time in construction and fast to construct, if large number of units are identical Optimum use of materials High quality and superior finishing Construction operation less affected by weather
PEBs have lot of advantages and some challenges that are being met successfully. As it is said a perfect plan is the essence of any system and PEBs is all about proper planning. While planning, efforts should be made to reduce the number of parts, material and use light weight elements to save on the transportation cost. However, the most important step is to increase the awareness amongst developers so that there can be a shift from conventional structures to PEBs. There are many ways to make the world green, which requires a mere shift in intention and commitment. With a well deserved support, PEBs promises a greener future ahead.

Indian construction industry is at a critical juncture wherein it has to balance the demand of low cost construction but simultaneously comply with the stringent environmental & efficiency norms that are becoming order of the day. With majority of building in India expected to be constructed in next three decades, the experts are working towards creating a balance between the technology from western world and old wisdom of Indian buildings that evolved over a period of time in harmony with nature. .

BUILDING FAÇADES The architectural façade has long been a compelling focus of interest for building physists and designers combining attributes of both appearance & performance in a holistic manner. Façades as a building envelope form the outer skins of buildings as a project image and creative intent. Increasingly, they are also understood as important environmental moderators. A thoughtfully designed skin can make a new building work more effectively for its owners, occupants and environment. It can also transform the performance of an existing building. The technology has gradually emerged in recent decade,

Image 1 driven largely by the pursuit of transparency in the building façade among international building designers. The façade is also the focal point of the Energy efficiency in a building design because it works as the first frontier to face the intense heat and a major source of heat ingress into the buildings. As an enclosing building component, it connects or separates the interior and the exterior. All components of the building façade, therefore need to work together to regulate the indoor environment, responding to heating, cooling, ventilation, and natural lighting needs. It must balance requirements for ventilation and daylight while providing thermal protection appropriate to the local climatic conditions. The optimally designed building façade is an important factor not only for achieving the energy efficiency, but also the human comfort for which the buildings are actually designed. Further, a building façade can have both positive and negative effects on work performance. Negative effects are associated with discomforts, distractions or health risks that interfere with peoples' ability to do their work whereas positive impacts are associated with enhancing work performance,
psychosocial well-being, and health to enhance the overall performance.
FACADE IMPLICATIONS ON OCCUPANT HEALTH& PERFORMANCE Performance enhancement is more likely to come from a different set of building features and attributes that affect performance. Lighting that produces glare or visual discomfort is more likely to be associated with headaches and eye problems. Glare due to direct solar penetration and due to the lack of luminous uniformity across the space distorts the perception of good indoor daylighting. As per a field study of office workers, it is found that workers who had window views of nature felt less frustrated and more patient, and reported more overall life satisfaction and better health than workers who did not have visual access to the outdoors or whose view consisted of built elements only. The positive effects of nature may also extend to the immune system, thereby directly affecting human physical health. Thereby, one of the perennial challenges in designing facades is to achieve an even distribution of diffused daylight

can be generated through Photovoltaic Glass unit. The advantage of this technology is that it is allowing the usage of fenestration part of the building as PGU's provides transparency to human eye upto 70%.
across the building section. Various computer simulation models like daylight distribution studies; visual comfort and glare analysis help optimize the building design to enhance performance and achieve visual comfort at the same time. These simulations evaluate building designs to identify potential concerns related to daylight distribution and provide solutions to ensure appropriate illumination of spaces. Images 1 and 2 are the images which demonstrate the pattern of direct sun ingress into space and subsequent placement of workstation to achieve glare free daylight in indoor spaces:
The Energy Generation Potential: The electricity produced by Photovoltaic Glass Unit system(PGU) in just 1 sqm of area can vary between 40-60 kWh per annum; sufficient energy to supply up to 2000 hours of light from 20 W energy saving light bulbs.
By conducting many more such simulations at AECOM for our clients, we have experienced that these simulations assist Architects, Engineers and Designers to design spaces with balanced luminance on different interior surfaces and achieve overall efficiency and visual comfort for the occupants.
FACADES OF THE FUTURE… THE TRENDSETTER Catering to the demands of an ever expanding industry and innovative designers, the presentation shifts in its last segment to sensitizing on the future technologies in Building Facades which will provide better efficiency, aesthetics and commercial value to the developments addressing a wider spectrum of issues covering following: Facades generating Power - Photo voltaic glass unit (PGU) Building integrated photovoltaic's capture the solar radiations and turn it into energy. A high level of energy generation (up to 12% efficiency)
Thermally Dynamic Facades - phase change materials (PCM) Façade, which responds in accordance with the variations in outdoor conditions. Thermally dynamic facades use phase change material wherein a layer of salt crystals captures the heat radiated by the sun and release it back to the environment during non-operational hours. The thickness of conventional materials used in buildings is much more than the equivalent heat capacity of a one-centimeter-thick PCM
Bio Mimicry in Facades - living buildings Just like the surface of a leaf, the 'skin' of future buildings may react to external stimuli, opening, closing and breathing throughout the day through a system of 'cellular' openings that allow light, air and water into the apartments contained within.
Facades enhancing Outdoor Environment - microclimate impact Growing vegetation on the façade can potentially create a positive
microclimate around the built form. A microclimate is a local atmospheric zone where the climate differs from the surrounding area. The studies accounts that a reduction of approx. 2”C can be achieved by using green vegetation around buildings compared to the surrounding ambient in composite climates like Delhi.
Facades enhancing Indoor Environment - growing fresh air Most developing countries have high pollution levels and as a result the indoor environment can be even more polluted. Drawing ventilation air through a green façade or a greenhouse offers a potential to counter the toxins, VOC's, microbial infections etc. in an air-conditioned building.
Façade addressing fuel crises building powered by algae A classic example for this technology is BIQ building algae panels
generating power where the algae is grown on façade and burned to provide an alternate energy source.
Facades addressing food crises Hydroponics The idea that fruits and vegetables can grow with water, light and nutrients is the basis of hydroponic: one of the innovative systems of making the building self-sustaining. There have been other numerous advantages of this system as well. A reduction is seen in street level concentrations up to 40% for NO2 and 60% for particulate matter. They potentially contribute to an increase in biodiversity in urban areas by providing a habitat for birds etc. The most important aspect is their "Rejuvenating effect" on the living creatures around as they contribute in softening of the urban landscape and allowing buildings to seem more 'natural' and pleasing for the people.
