Student Experience Student Project Healthcare Design Studio_Fall 2008 Brief Summary Design a campus plan, ambulatory surgical center, restaurant, and hotel for the Mercy Medical Center in Mason City, IA Design Completion Sketch Up + 3DS Max + AutoCad + Photoshop + Illustrator Project A two person design problem completed as an interdisciplinary project between architecture and interior design students. The conceptual statement of the project: Combining the bionic principle of mimicking an original function of an organ (or even surpassing it) with the functionality of skin. A masterplan and detailed design including an ambulatory surgical center, restaurant, and hotel, were branded facilities and proposed to the existing Mercy Medical Center.

Proposed Project Statement Formulating a fresh, supportive addition to Mercy Medical Center will help to create a marketable medical campus in Mason City, IA. The facilities will serve as the launch of an innovative architectural fashion. This iconic design will lend itself to a new approach of transformation to the rest of the medical campus. It will become an area of significance to the region...a place where one’s recall of experiences will deliver recurrent visits back to the district. Doctors not interested in residing in Mason City, IA can still be a physician on campus via telecommunication. Efficiency for workers within the buildings is imperative to the wellness and health of those involved. Hospitable generosity and elite service will be provided for all occupants and customers at the surgical center, restaurant, and hotel.

Student Experience Student Project - Brief Summary Design an architectural office in Lincoln, NE Design Completion Sketch Up + Vray + AutoCad + Photoshop Project The fictional project started as an open-ended project which one was to design an architectural office. This included determining what type of office and associated employee types, but also one was to develop a brand in order to make various conceptual decisions within the remainder of the design process. ‘Tongue and groove’ (later T|G Design) was the inspiration to emulate a teamwork environment. This integral system, often used in flooring, would inspire the work of the various designers at the architectural office...each person needs the skills of the other - like it takes atleast two pieces of wood when installing a tongue and groove floor system. During the timeline of the project, creative solutions were needed to develop building program on the small site. Branding, conceptual integration, schematic design, and a final design were important through the process of this project. Research and investigation of local architectural offices helped to understand the program needs. Developed “Firm Profile” T|G Design encompasses a diverse team of: graphic designers, industrial designers, interior designers, product designers, architects, and artists. Each member of the staff plays an important part to ensure success during the design process. Without one member of the team, a design may suffer, so without one individual, there is no team. Collaboration is imperative to this innovative business.

Student Experience Student Project - Brief Summary Design a winery and monastery in Omaha, NE Design Completion Sketch Up + Vray + AutoCad + Photoshop + Illustrator Project The fictional project utilized various conceptual ideas and creative ways to develop building program and site design. Investigation of various wineries helped to understand the program needed and a site adjunct course paralleled the importance of the site design. Within the winery, it was important to provide retail space for selling product that the monastery developed.

Moire Patterns A moire pattern is the development of more than one patterns overlap. These conceptual diagrams were completed in order to serve as a starting point for the design process. Each pattern was developed as the final image is of barb wire (far right). It was then developed further later in the project. (Photoshop)

Program Analysis Program diagrams and graphs help to explain spatial needs and volumes. The diagrams also help to describe the public vs. private necessities of a monastery/winery program desires as well as the adjacency of each. (Photoshop and Sketch Up)
