JFK Alumni Kicks off Kennedy 50th Anniversary Celebrations

he Bellmore JFK Alumni kicked off a year of celebrating the 50th anniversary of Kennedy High School by installing several new honorary and memorial bricks and a bench into its Cougar Walk of Recognition during a recent warm summer’s day. Dr. Gary Morgenstern, president of the alumni association, remarked during the installation that the walk of recognition “connects the past with the present,” and will project its students, teachers and administrators well into the future for generations to come. Unveiled on November 1, 2014, the walkway, at the northeastern end of the school’s athletic field, features over 9800 bricks and stanches, and several benches, said Ron Steiger, alumni publicity spokesperson. Increasingly, the bricks add the names of students, teachers and administrators of the school as

Other schools in the district, such as Calhoun and Mepham, have been following suit with development of memorial walkways of their own. Eileen Connelly, assistant principal of the school for 19 years until her retirement last year, placed a brick into the

walk of recognition. She was also the administrator who pushed for an alumni association because of what she said was a need to put forth a vision of the school that would help students and others at the school carry the good works of the school into the future. “I’m thrilled to see this walkway,” she said. Both Morgenstern and Connelly told Your NewsMag that events in the future to help commemorate the school’s 50th anniversary will include, but are not limited to, a golf tournament in October, an all musical gala during the school’s annual Winter concert, and the Hall of Fame ceremony next spring. I

Back to school – and off to college

will always remember my son’s first day of school. I took a picture of him with a giant excited smile on his face, a school tag necklace around his neck and a backpack with lunch in hand, waiting for the school bus to pick him up and bring him to Chatterton. The last day was just as memorable. I could not believe that my son was no longer going to be in elementary school. To make myself feel better, I convinced myself that there were still two schools to go. Before I knew it, two years passed and off to high school. In a quick blink, more time has passed and now my son starts his first day of college this week! The schools in the Bellmores and Merricks have wonderful programs for our kids. I could not be more pleased with the programs and opportunities that were available for my son throughout the years. The educators have been available and interested, the PTAs active, and the community supportive by always passing the school budget. Perhaps that is why our high schools are ranked amongst the best in the nation. There are exciting new programs and improvements to the schools this year that the lucky children in our area will be able to enjoy. Inside this issue, the superintendents from the Bellmore and Merrick schools provide some insight on what to expect this coming school year, including updates on the construction projects to improve the school buildings. Organizing for school is necessary for kids in all grades. Everything from getting school supplies, new clothes, dorm essentials, all the way through organizing financing for college. It is never too early to start planning how to finance college. Local expert Barry Fox shares some valuable tips. JFK High School Alumni Association kicks of the Kennedy High School 50th Anniversary Celebration with the installation of new commemorative bricks on the Cougar Walk of Recognition. There are more great celebratory plans to come. Enjoy twice the fun with two great street fairs. The Merrick Fall Festival and The Bellmore Family Festival are sure to provide all kinds of exciting entertainment and good old-fashioned family fun. Make sure to at-

tend both fairs. It’s a great opportunity to get out of the house and walk through the town. Your kids will enjoy the rides, and the entire family will enjoy seeing friends and neighbors as you indulge in a bite to eat, browse crafts for sale and stop at the booths to meet merchants from the local shops. Before heading to the fair clip out the valuable coupons inside. History is in the making as Weinman’s hardware store, an iconic business in the community for many decades, is now the new home of Crown Steakhouse. Scheduled to open on Bedford Avenue in Bellmore in September, this fine steakhouse, owned by local residents, is sure to be a success. The attention to detail starts at the front door and continues throughout the restaurant. Many elements used to decorate have historic interest and wonderful craftsmanship pared with food prepared by an experienced and talented chef. I’ve already visited their website to receive updates and specials. Read on to learn more about this new and exciting addition to the neighborhood. There are several 9/11 remembrance ceremonies to attend. Look for the 9/11 remembrance ceremony in your town. It is important to remember those who sacrificed their lives to save others from this act of terrorism and show your support to the families who experience their own very personal loss each day. CHSD School Construction Weathers Delays, Doubles Output for 2017 Completion

A

fter New York State held up construction during the summer of 2015 of the Central High School District’s schedule of multiyear projects to rebuild science classrooms and several bathrooms, add new air conditioning and heating vents (HVAC), replace windows and curbs, build new curriculum classrooms and resurface several parking lots, the district was in full construction mode during summer of 2016 to “double the output” and is on schedule to complete all facility enhancements by the end of 2017 - thanks to a $49 million bond passed by residents in late 2013. “While we were able to get a new Kennedy High School synthetic turf field installed in 2014, along with construction of classrooms and vinyl compost tile into the gymnasi-

um,” the state held up approval of continuation of construction during the summer of 2015 on other schools, remarked Jon Simpkins, director of school facilities and operations.

Notwithstanding the three high schools all had new synthetic turf fields installed during the summer of 2014 as part of phase 1 of construction, Simpkins said the state approved new construction in

mid-summer of 2015 but it took the district until the fall to put out bids and pick a construction firm to continue the work. Once School Construction Consultants was picked as the contrac-

tor, the district began fixing bathrooms in Mepham. “We made sure there was a boys and girls bathroom available on each floor, but we began construction on the others during the school year, after 3 p.m.,” Simpkins said. Night work was part of the contract. Most importantly, a new broadcast journalism classroom complete with Apple Mac computers, and a control console within a control room has been constructed that offers students contemplating a career in journalism with a new broadcast avenue to explore while learning more specific methods in communications. Bleachers for visiting teams at Kennedy were also reconstructed during the fall 2015-spring 2016 season as well, [CONT. ON PAGE 8]

along with home bleachers. Reconstruction of Grand Avenue bathrooms also began in fall 2015 into spring 2016, and a new kitchen ceiling and hoods along with some masonry work, and five new science classrooms, along with HVAC upgrades, would also be completed by 2016 opening day, Simpkins continued. And a new roof has been put on the entire building. Simpkins told Your NewsMag that over this past summer he and two associates, along with three members of the construction firm have met weekly to discuss progress and go over construction plans to ensure final construction is wrapped up by the end of 2017.

Roofing material is ready to be put down at GAMS During spring of this year Merrick Avenue had new asphalt and concrete curbs put in, and during the summer at Calhoun High School the first new HVAC components for classrooms, the Little Theatre, the auditorium and the guidance department were installed to provide more efficient air conditioning and heating within the building. “Electrical componentry such as transformers and wiring were put in place during spring,” providing for a quick and smooth transition into full and complete installation of the HVAC in the summer. Simpkins maintained that the other schools will get new HVAC

New kitchen exhaust units will be installed in Kennedy’s current kitchen, and Mepham will get new ceilings and kitchen exhaust units to go along with five new science classrooms. Simpkins said some HVAC work will be done to prepare the building for complete installation of the HVAC units by next summer. At Calhoun, kitchen ceilings and hoods, as well as renovations to bathrooms and five science classrooms were to be worked on over the fall-into-spring and summer of 2017. New pipes and boilers that would provide for both natural gas and oil fuels to be used - depending upon the market conditions for that type of fuel - were also to be installed before the end of 2017.

SPECIFICS

Specifically, Grand Avenue and Merrick Avenue Middle Schools will

get new HVAC systems, roofs replaced, new science rooms and rest rooms, new art and faculty rooms, a new music suite, its gym floor refinished, synthetic turf, security upgrades and new exterior upgrades. Calhoun High School will get HVAC, new restrooms, new science labs and a new Calhoun Café, new auditorium side curtains, new ceiling tiles, a synthetic field and its gym floor refinished. Kennedy High School will get HVAC, new hot water heater, new restrooms and science labs, a new family consumer science lab, new band room, new floors, new visitor bleachers, a synthetic turf field and expansion of sidewalks. Mepham High School would get similar upgrades as both Calhoun and Kennedy, but also a new theatrical lighting and sound system as well as a synthetic field. The Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District’s construction bond, passed in late2013 3,441 to 2,717 votes, is a $49.864 million 15-year bond, of which $26.984 million, or 53.9%, is paid for through New York State Building aid.

District High Schools Rank Among Best in the Nation

C

alhoun, Kennedy and Mepham High Schools in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District have been named among the best top 500 high schools in the country in Newsweek’s annual 2016 List of America’s top 500 high schools. On the list, Kennedy High School was ranked at number 160, Mepham High School came in at number 266 and Calhoun High School was ranked at number 300. The rankings are based on a college readiness score determined by average AP/IB, ACT and SAT scores, along with graduation rate and college-bound percentage. Counselor-to-student ratio and student retention rate over four years of enrollment also factor into the ranking. For example, Calhoun, ranked 300, has a college readiness score of 77.4%, with a graduate rate of 97.1% and a college bound score of 95.8%. Meanwhile, Mepham, ranked 266, scored a college readiness of 78.4, a graduate rate of 97.1 and a college bound score of 98.3. Kennedy, ranking 166, had a graduate rate of 100, a college readiness score of 81.5 and a college bound rate of 98.7.

Said John DeTommaso , CHSD superintendent of schools, in a prepared statement: “I am extremely proud that all three of our high schools have been recognized as being among the best in the country. “Of course,” he continued, “these lists don’t completely measure the greatness of our schools. Anyone who spends an extended period of time in any of our three high schools or our middle schools can more effectively measure the incredible things our staff does for students. Add a very supportive parent group with a board of education dedicated to providing what’s best for our kids, and you have a recipe for success.”

2014 Kennedy graduate Josh Dreyer told Your NewsMag it’s a fantastic recognition. “The teachers and the guidance counselors were always there to help you and assist you. Their doors were always open.” They made learning fun, he added. Andrew Ryan, 2012 Calhoun graduate, remarked that “What really impacted me as a student was the interaction I had with teachers and faculty. The communication and willingness to work with students is what made Calhoun such a great learning environment for me.” Michael Froese, a 1988 Mepham graduate, said the recognition is “a great accomplish-

ment in many ways.” He remembers the environment at Mepham as one in which “The teachers and students all cared about one another.” He added that school spirit always seemed high, and sports teams competed hard. Newsweek used data from the National Center for Education Statistics for its 2016 rankings. The district’s Advanced Science Research program regularly produces students that win Intel Semi-Final science honors, and several have been named as national finalists.

BELLMORE-MERRICK Message from John DeTommaso, CHSD Superintendent

s with most summers, the two months since we said goodbye to our graduating seniors have flown by in the blink of an eye. While summer provides children and hopefully many of you, an opportunity to take a few precious moments to relax, have a little fun, and recharge the batteries, a great deal of work has been undertaken in district in preparation for the 2016-17 school year. Much of the work in Phase 3 of our $50 million Bond project was completed in the schools this summer. Science rooms were renovated at Mepham, Calhoun, Kennedy and Grand Avenue, providing spaces better suited for state-of-the-art research and higher-level science, technology, engineering and math activities. The music suites, library and parking lot at Merrick Avenue and the family consumer science

room at Kennedy were also renovated. In fact, the newly renovated kitchen will be one of the finest facilities in New York State and home to the district’s C.H.A.M.P. program (Culinary, Hospitality and Applied Management Program). In addition, new bathrooms are in various states of renovation throughout the district. HVAC systems were replaced completely at Calhoun and Grand along with other select classrooms around the district. Air conditioning is being installed in every middle and high school auditorium. Masonry and site improvements were completed throughout the district, and fire suppressant exhaust systems were installed in all of our school kitchens. Much work has been accomplished to enhance our academic program, as well. During the summer, teams of teachers collaborated on curriculum proj-

ects to ensure our courses are aligned with best instructional practices and the new academic requirements and standards. Tying in with our newly renovated science rooms, STE(A)M integration will offer exciting experiences in the engineering elective classes at all three of our high schools. Students may begin exploring topics as early as the ninth grade in the revised Design and Drawing for Production elective, which emphasizes creativity and the arts interlaced with the teaching of technical skills, such as the use of state-ofthe-art computer-aided design software. New this fall, the Principles of Engineering and Digital Electronics electives will provide juniors and seniors with opportunities to earn college credit. Also on the horizon for 2016-17 are new lessons and opportunities in robotics, 3-D printing and independent technology research. The district is pleased to an-

nounce the addition of Mandarin Chinese to our world languages course offerings. Students who have identified Mandarin as their language of choice can begin their studies this fall and continue through the 12th grade. Also, the district is expanding the English Language Learners program to include both of our middle schools. New rigors are also being instilled in the Meadowbrook Alternative Program to challenge our more sophisticated alternative learners. These will include new staffing resources to complement new programs in psychology, marketing and world languages, as well as more Advanced Placement courses, to name a few. The new additions to our program further expand opportunities for our students, and we anticipate that they will be as popular and successful as the additions of 2015-16. AUGUST IS NATIONAL IMMUNIZATION AWARENESS MONTH

A

Back-to-school vaccines are essential

ugust is National Immunization Month and parents are reminded that updating their children’s vaccinations should be added to their back-to-school list. Vaccines offer the best known protection against many life-threatening and debilitating diseases. “Nassau County continues to see cases of vaccine-preventable diseases, including mumps and pertussis,” remarked County Health Commissioner Dr. Lawrence Eisenstein. “Protecting our children from preventable diseases will keep them healthy and in school. Vaccines are recommended throughout our lives, and are a proven and successful public health tool in protecting society from many of these serious diseases.” In addition to the state-required immunizations for day care settings, schools and health care providers, the following are recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics, American Academy of Family Physicians, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention: influenza, rotavirus, hepatitis A and hu-

man papilloma virus vaccines. Vaccines are recommended for infants, children, teenagers and adults based on many different factors including age, health conditions, lifestyles, occupation and travel. Vaccination is a critical step in protecting those who are most vulnerable to illness – infants and young children, the elderly and those with chronic conditions and weakened immune systems. Concluded County Executive Edward P. Mangano, “The single best way to protect our children and the entire community from these serious diseases is by ensuring age appropriate vaccinations. Vaccines are among the safest most cost-effective ways to prevent disease and protect health.” For complete information on immunizations for children and adults, visit the New York State Department of Health website at www.health. ny.gov/prevention/immunization, or contact the Nassau County Department of Health Immunization Hotline weekdays from 9:00 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. at 227-9416.

Dr. Cynthia Seniuk, School District Superintendent

eptember is the month for new beginnings and a time for students to set fresh goals and ambitions! On behalf of the Board of Education and staff, it is with great excitement and enthusiasm I welcome you to the 2016-17 school year. It is a sincere honor to have been appointed as your Superintendent of Schools, and I look forward to a remarkable and rewarding school year for everyone. Throughout the summer, our administrators, teachers, clerical staff and custodians have been working hard to prepare classrooms for our opening. Participation in curriculum development projects and professional development training focused on technology, math, science, social studies and character education has prepared us well for the 2016-17 school year. This fall, our technology initiatives will include extending Lego robotics, coding and greater online, interactive textbook access. Our fifth- and

sixth-grade students will have full access to individual laptops throughout the school day. Laptop carts will be available for use in our lower grade classrooms, and students will continue to visit our computer labs. This year, all teachers will host individual classroom webpages. Students and their families will be given complimentary access to Office 365. In language arts, we will begin our implementation of the Teachers College Writing Units of Study, and we will begin to explore a new reading program. Integrating motion, movement and greater manipulatives into our math program, primary grade

students will participate in multisensory, kinesthetic activities that will further their mathematical understanding. Science instruction will include extending our marine biology, embryology and engineering units. Upper-grade students will have the opportunity to design and build their own bridge structures across a predetermined span. In social studies, there will be a greater emphasis on primary source documents, and the students will have the opportunity to learn from special presenter, Lou del Bianco whose grandfather was, in fact, the chief carver of the mountain at Mount Rushmore! Extending the strong articulation established with the BMCHSD Math Department last year, our sixthgrade teachers will participate in science training and workshops with the BMCHSD Science Department. We will launch our 2016 – 17 Parent University on October 25, with our Family Math Night, which will include parents and students participating in many interactive sessions.

The district is awaiting final approval from the State of its $661,037 School Bond Investment Plan. Once approved, this allocation will go towards the expansion of our current wireless system, including upgrading the existing network infrastructure and cabling. Once the infrastructure is in place, the district will use the remaining allocation to purchase projectors for Smart Boards and laptops. Phase One of our $14,650,000 bond project has begun, as we are in the process of repairing extensive masonry work at Harold D. Fayette School. The following phases of the project will begin in the spring and continue through the summer of 2018. The project entails window replacement; boiler, univent, and heating pipe replacement; installation of air conditioning; bus loop replacement; security improvements; lintel repair and replacement; and asbestos floor tile removal. As a school district whose foundation is solidified by the relationships among our schools, families and

community members, we take great pride in our commitment to prepare students physically, mentally, academically, emotionally and socially to be successful every day. We are dedicated to meeting the needs of each child, as well as providing a safe and secure learning environment for all. It is important to share some simple guidelines for students to remember as they embark and continue on their educational journey:  Always believe in yourself  Work hard  It is okay to make mistakes  Learn from those mistakes  Never give up  Follow your dreams; and  Small steps will most definitely lead to bigger achievements. I thank you for entrusting your children to our district and invite you to take full advantage of the many opportunities to share in their educational experience. In addition, I wish all of our students and parents a productive and enriching 2016-17 school year.

Many Eligible for College Aid Don’t Apply By Barry Fox BA, MA

The underlying philosophy of college financial aid starts with the assumption that it’s the parent’s responsibility, first and foremost, to pay for their child’s college education to the extent that they are able. How much parents are able to afford is written into law and is calculated by the federal government. This process is called a needs analysis and is determined by submitting a form called a FAFSA, Free Application for Federal Student Aid. The family’s financial contribution is essentially the amount of money that the family has available to pay for college. The formula used to determine this takes into account many variables. As college costs increase, families often miss financial aid opportunities because they are not aware of how the system operates. Not many students with more than $80,000 in family income can get Pell grants but they can get other aid such as college based aid, New York State TAP, and federal student and parent loans. The FAFSA form is the first step in applying for all types of need based aid including federal student loans. Many parents believe that the aid is only available if you’re really poor. College financial aid rules seem bizarre to many parents and accountants, even those accustomed to doing 1040s. For example, under the federal tax code you get a break if you save money in your child’s name, but if you take advantage of this federal tax break you

will get penalized by the federal financial aid system. Under the federal formula, the student is expected to contribute 20% of his own savings toward college costs each year. In four years 80% of the money will be gone. Unless you’re positive that you won’t qualify for financial aid, putting money in the student’s name is crazy. The financial aid system favors certain assets over others, but home equity, retirement accounts, and cash value life insurance are ignored. The financial aid system also hurts kids who make more than $6400 a year, although few high school and college students do. For every extra dollar over $6400 the school will take 50%. In theory kids should work and save money but when you’re going to lose substantial amounts of government and college aid, why bother? When assessing the families aid eligibility the formula looks only at debts that are secured by assets that are on the FAFSA form. For instance, mortgage debts are not listed and neither is the value of the family home. The number of family members in school at the same time can dramatically increase aid eligibility however family members only include the student’s siblings. The FAFSA can be submitted as early as October 1. Previously, the earliest date was January 1. Visit www.barryfoxcollegefinance.com for free local seminars in your area.

Marc Bromberg Painting

Back-to-School Message from Superintendent Maria Testa

he new school year is almost upon us. We can’t wait to open our doors on Tuesday, September 6 and welcome back nearly 2100 students to our five elementary schools, including the members of the class of 2029 who will be with us for the first time. Our staff members have been working hard to prepare for the new school year, from the teachers and administrators who have been refining curriculum, to the custodians who have been cleaning the buildings from top to bottom. Our goal is to prepare your children for the rigorous and challenging courses they will take in middle school and high school, and we do that by offering an elementary curriculum that builds a strong foundation and leaves students poised for long-term success. Over the last several years, we have been working hard to create a curriculum that rivals that of any other district in the county. We are proud to continue to support our teachers through quality training opportunities. Our three instructional coaches and director of educational programming and professional development provide onsite workshops directly related to district initiatives. Additionally, all faculty members attend a 90-minute professional development session once per month after school hours. This summer, many teachers attended workshops to further their understanding and skills as they relate to small group instruction.

Your NewsMag

The district has several new initiatives planned for the school year. We will launch new writing units of study, while continuing our emphasis on smallgroup literacy instruction, with activities such as guided, interactive, shared and independent reading. We will further expand the use of technology in our schools, especially through our STEM program. Earlier this month, we unveiled our Smart School Technology Investment plan, which includes the deployment of approximately 550 iPads, funded by the state. This initiative is supported through the expansion of wireless capability in all schools. All decisions and initiatives continue with our strategic plan in mind, as well as our mission to inspire all students to be confident and passionate learners. In North Bellmore, we look to develop the whole child, and that means teaching students to be good citizens. It is with creativity and compassion that last year more than 400 students wrote proposals for the Service Project Letter Campaign, and this fall we look forward to the completion of the winning community service projects. We will continue to improve our communication with all district residents, ensure that our facilities are clean and safe, and produce responsible budgets. It is an honor to work on behalf of the children and families of North Bellmore Schools. Here’s to a great school year!

Teaching Children the Importance of Community Involvement

hen school is in session, it may seem like the greatest lessons to be learned revolve around reading, writing and arithmetic. But teaching children the importance of getting involved in their community and lending a hand to neighbors should not be overlooked. Here are a few ideas on how individuals of all ages can make a positive impact. • Donate to a local shelter. Provide aid to children and families in need by donating school supplies, toys, as well as gently used shoes and clothing to local shelters. Children can collect things they no longer use at home, and then help deliver items to a local organization. They can also mobilize neighbors and friends to make donations by hosting a drive. • Participate in a local fundraiser in your community. Learn about upcoming special events that support your favorite charities. Children can help at all levels, from assisting at registration tables, cheering on individuals running in a 5K or passing out literature. They can

also organize their own fundraiser. A bake sale or car wash are some fun ideas that children can participate in — from start to finish. • Research organizations that support charities important to your child and lend a hand together. Get involved by volunteering, spreading the word or donating to the cause. Local chapters can provide numerous ways children can participate. • Support companies committed to

philanthropic efforts. Many companies identify non-profit organizations that support like-minded causes and offer customers opportunities to give back throughout the year. For example, there is a national company dedicated to strengthening the communities it serves through a longstanding — and ongoing — partnership with the non-profit organization Shoes That Fit. Rack Room Shoes supports Shoes That Fit’s mission to help more students attend school in comfort, and with confidence and dignity by providing children in need with a new pair of shoes. If you’re a parent, you know children’s feet grow fast! However, the importance of having shoes that fit properly is sometimes taken for granted. Your children may not realize that some of their schoolmates may have to wear ill-fitting shoes that make it hard for them to participate in sports or concentrate in class. The good news is there is something you can do to help. Rack Room Shoes hosts bi-annual Shoes That Fit fund-raising campaigns

that offer customers the opportunity to donate at the register. Donations are used to provide new shoes to students in need in local school systems. “Whether it’s with our customers, associates or partners, it’s important to show children we are all working together to make a positive impact in the areas where we live and work,” said Mark Lardie, Rack Room Shoes president and CEO. Since the partnership was established, Rack Room Shoes has donated more than 150,000 pairs of new shoes to children nationwide. School liaisons report that students who have participated in the program have better academic performance, improved attendance, improved behavior and an increased participation in physical activities. For locations, and to learn more about a brand that gives back, visit RackRoomGives.com. Through volunteering and charitable giving, children can learn a lifelong lesson that extends far beyond the classroom.

Organizing for School – Tips for your Children and You! By Annmarie Brogan

O

rganizing for school is similar to organizing your home and family life. It has to be a partnership between the people involved – namely your children, their teachers and you. If each of you plays your part, you’ll be destined for a great year! Establish a routine for managing paperwork going to and from school Designate a specific “drop off” location for takehome school papers. These might include teacher notes, PTA/school flyers, completed schoolwork. TIP: Children should get used to unpacking their bags when they get home and “dropping off” all papers that you, the parent, need to see and/or take action on. This should become routine behavior. Provide a well-stocked area with all the necessary supplies your children need to do their homework and projects Decide where your children will do their homework. This will depend on their ages, space constraints and personal preference. Whether each of them works in their own rooms or everyone does their homework in one central location, the area(s) should be well stocked with the tools they will need to accomplish their tasks. TIP: Consider a portable art caddy to house

necessary school supplies. Stock it with pens, pencils, erasers, markers, highlighters, scissors, glue sticks, rulers etc. This will keep all these items in one easily, accessible place and still give your children the option of moving it to the room they wish to work in. If your children regularly do their homework “on the run,” organize your car as an extension of your home. TIP: Repurpose old backpacks to house school supplies for doing homework and keeping entertained while en route to various activities. Include a clipboard so they have a sturdy writing surface to complete homework neatly. Teach your children to prepare for school the night before. Have your child(ren) pick out their clothes for the next day, including accessories (hair, belts, jewelry). Consider the following: • Is it a gym day? Are sneakers needed? • What is the weather going to be? • Is it a “special dress’’ day at school? • Is there a sport or activity that requires a uniform or equipment? Prepare for lunch the next day: • Are they buying or bringing lunch? • If bringing lunch, ask them what they would like so you (or they) know what to prepare

• If buying lunch, discuss which choices they are allowed to make. Make sure they have placed their signed homework, books, notes for teachers, library books, etc. in the backpack. TIP: Anything leaving the house should be placed by the door, including schoolbags, lunch, instruments and projects. Determine the best way for YOU to manage school documents, reference materials and other paperwork. Divide paperwork into the following categories, and add your own as necessary: •School calendar/PTA family event flyers • School directories and class phone lists •Teacher memos • Things due back to school (Permission slips and money for school trips, book fair, etc.) • School newsletter • Invitations to school parties • School health records and forms for nurse How you house these documents will depend on space constraints and personal preference. Possible choices: • Decorative file box with hanging folders and lid to house all papers • Binder with pocket folders and tabs • Desktop organizer with cubbies and/or letter

size file folders • An actual desk or workstation in the kitchen with file drawers Keep control over extra supplies and be reasonable when deciding which schoolwork and projects are worth designating as keepsake. Use a sturdy clear bin to house all extra school supplies needed for your child, including overflow/extras such as pens, folders, notebooks etc. and things you want to control, such as paint, glitter and glue. Create a keepsake bin for each child to house artwork, special writings and projects. TIP: For larger projects, take photographs to preserve the memory without taking up more space than you might have. Create photo albums or digital photo books as special keepsakes for each child. There are also many art keepsake apps out there. Check your app store for information and reviews on the latest ones available for your particular phone. Remember, organizing is trial and error. You have to find the system that works best for you and your family. If one system isn't working, try another. There is no right or wrong way to organize — just an organized way! Dr. Joe Famularo, Bellmore School District

W

e in the Bellmore Public Schools are excited to once again open our doors in September and welcome our students in grades Pre k-6. Our school community is dedicated to the development of the whole child, and we work to instill the joy of learning in each student. We ensure that each child is challenged and motivated, and becomes a successful and well-rounded lifelong learner. Our main goal is to provide every student with the highest quality of education possible in a safe and supportive learning environment. Working together as a “Community of Learners,” our parents, the Board of Education, administration, teachers, staff and I are committed to helping all students grow, learn, and achieve his/her fullest potential. The goal of our outstanding academic program is to help each child reach his/her fullest potential in all academic areas. Our Bellmore Stars Character Development Program, which is embedded throughout the

curriculum, is centered on universal leadership principles and shared core values. Through this program, we foster the social-emotional development of all children, encourage them to grow and learn, and recognize each child as a Bellmore Star. We are excited about our 1:1 Chromebook initiative for students in grades 3-6. This will allow our students to digitally communicate, collaborate, and consider different perspectives as they explore and learn. The 1:1 initiative will also provide increased opportunities to differentiate and individualize learning. Important goals of our technology and science program include engaging our students in deep learning while equipping them with critical thinking, problem-solving and collaboration skills. Dedicated science labs at Shore Road and Winthrop Avenue provide our students with increased opportunities to experience handson activities as they utilize the scientific method in order to test hypotheses and discover results through their

inquiries. Additionally, we provide opportunities for interested students to learn the basics of coding and programming while working with a variety of robotics applications. In addition to our well-rounded curriculum, the Bellmore School District has developed an outstanding Star Arts program, which comprises the Star Visual Arts Program, the Star Music Program and the Star Performing Arts Program. Through these programs, every student has the opportunity to be involved in enriched visual arts, music and performing arts activities. We believe that involvement in the arts fosters critical, creative and innovative thinking, as well as nurtures social-emotional development. The 2016-17 school year promises to be an exciting year for our students. I look forward to partnering with our community as we continue to offer our students a top-rated school experience grounded in strong academics, character development, arts and achievement.

hope that everyone has been enjoying the summer. The start of school is only a few short weeks away on Tuesday, September 6. It has been a busy summer. Each school is undergoing the annual summer cleaning and maintenance in preparation for the new school year. The custodial staff is hard at work washing, waxing, repairing and painting in every school. Numerous teachers are engaged in professional development and curriculum writing activities. Our administrators and clerical staff are spending the summer arranging for a smooth opening of school when students return. I am happy to announce that Christopher Hoisik has been selected to be the Assistant Principal at Birch School. For many years, Mr. Hoisik has been a successful teacher at Birch School and we are confident that he will be a wonderful member of the administrative team.

For months, the Board of Education and administration have been working on plans to rejuvenate and improve the school buildings and physical plant infrastructure. Public discussion will continue in September as we decide how to best insure that our schools remain safe, inviting and conducive to a great education. Please join us at the upcoming Board meetings for these discussions. We look forward to another great year at Birch, Chatterton and Levy Lakeside Schools.

Crown Steakhouse and Whiskey Bar Comes to Bellmore “Well, show me the way to the next whiskey bar”– Jim Morrison DOUGLAS FINLAY

T

he new Crown Steakhouse and whiskey bar has taken up residence in the iconic space at the former Weinman’s Hardware in Bellmore Village, combining whiskey tastings–such as those with a smoky peat flavor or a lighter, more fruity blend – with a fine array of primeaged steaks to present a sophisticated-if-delectable dining experience all within a gorgeous open-space setting. Beyond prime steaks readied for weeks in its refrigerated dry age-boxes in the cellar, Chef Tim Egan hopes as well to energize the senses of diners with an assortment of alternate vegetarian, chicken and seafood dishes that include root cellar vegetables purchased from local growers; local mussels, oysters, clams, shrimps and Stone crab – in season; and organic roasted chickens. “My daughter is a vegetarian,” he remarked to Your NewsMag during a tour of the new restaurant, and he

will gladly create for her or any vegetarian any dish he can. He is among a handful of creative chefs in the neighborhoods with the credentials to pull it off. Studying culinary cuisine at Cordon Bleu in London, he went to work for Jerry Della Famina at East Hampton’s Della Famina at 99 North Main Street, then moved on to work at the Tribeca Grill in downtown New York before settling in to run the Saucon Valley Country Club in Lehigh Valley, home of the womens U.S. Open, for several years. Having met new owner Jerry McClorey years ago, he knew McClorey, of Merrick, was looking for a space to open a new restaurant on Long Island when he first entered the old Weinman space in April 2015. Recalled McClorey, “I had been looking for a place to open a new restaurant on Long Island and, when I walked into the empty space on Bedford Av-

Now occupies the iconic space once Weinman's enue with its high ceilings and skylights, I knew this was the place.” He was equally excited at Bellmore’s active community. “It’s a destination now,” he said, “with its flea market, its car show, its large fair and its commuters.” He believes, too, that any new restaurants that come to Bellmore would add to the clientele, because diners would discover a larger selection of eating establishments to choose from.

OPEN ECLECTIC ATMOSPHERE

For months he and Egan sketched out plans of how the restaurant

would look, utilizing its high ceiling and skylights to bring a variety of eclectic styles that would provide an open space feel. The floors are made from a large white oak folding gym door that came from a school in the Bronx, now closed. They went looking for, and found, an 1870 back bar from Johnsonville, Conn., made of mahogany and featured in a National Geographic TV show. The bathroom doors are woven wood built by owner McClorey, and his son. McClorey is formerly a carpenter who emigrated from Northern Ireland. The bar counter is also made of

walnut and white oak by McClorey, while the chandeliers are locally built by New York Architectural Metals on Newbridge Road. Even the name of the restaurant at the front of the building was built by the metal worker on Newbridge Road. Several glass pieces used to partition the dining area from the bar area came from a Milwaukee glass works that closed in the 1980s. “I hope to use some of those glass pieces to cook and serve dinners on,” Egan told Your NewsMag. One of the walls of the restaurant is constructed [CONT. ON PAGE 29]

of open cabinets filled with whiskeys, ryes and bourbons from top to bottom. Crown Steakhouse and Whiskey Bar will serve 200 whiskeys, from ryes to bourbons to single malts, to be pared with porterhouse, T-bone, NY strip, filet mignon, and Kansas City steaks. “These are hand-selected grass-fed cuts of meat that are highly marbled and ideally tender for the dry-aging process,” Egan said. He admitted the process of paring whiskeys with meats and other foods is a dynamic one. “It will be determined in large measure by the whiskeys I get in, whether they have caramel or vanilla tones, for example, brought out by the wood barrels they are stored in.” Irish whiskeys such as Bushmill will go good with meats, while scotches, with their heavy peat flavors, may go good with oysters. For those not keen on red meat yet have found that steakhouses offer some of the best alternate menus, there are racks of lamb, braised short ribs, osso buco, pork chops, King salmon in season, striped bass (now in season) and an assortment of pastas made on premises.
