ENERGY EFFICIENCY Building

Lighting

Through this chapter we take a comprehensive look at ways to increase energy efficiency throughout the Rochester Public Library. From simply using coffee mugs instead of paper cups to more complex suggestions of reflective roofing to curb cooling costs. We hope that these opportunities, suggestions, and plans of action can serve the community even beyond the library. See the possibilities of reducing costs and helping the environment through each section outlined here. Start taking action by getting to know your setting and discovering your own opportunities.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY BUILDING OPPORTUNITIES for CHANGE

SUGGESTIONS Air leaks are the main reasons of cooling and heating system inefficiency. Sealing and insulating the “envelope” or “shell” of the building can save up to 20% of heating and cooling costs according to Energy Star.

WHAT YOU CAN DO! KEY

Hire a skilled constructor to seal and insulate the building:

Calculate the annual savings of installing a reflective roof www.roofcalc.com/

Seal air leaks throughout the building to stop drafts: windows, doors, and holes hidden in attics, basements, and crawl spaces. Sealing these leaks with caulk, spray foam, or weather stripping

Heat gained through the roof is another reason for energy loss of a cooling system. A reflective roof product can reflect more of the sun’s rays. This can lower roof surface temperature by up to 100°F, decreasing the amount of heat transferred into a building.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY HEATING & COOLING OPPORTUNITIES for CHANGE

SUGGESTIONS

Rochester Public Library is housed in a building thatROChesteR PubLiC LibRaRy buiLding (1995) is shared with the Rochester Police & Village offices. The two sections are joined by a shared community $1,500 ROChesteR PubLiC LibRaRy buiLding (1995) room, for which the library and village/police equally divide the electric bill. Our team was fortunate to be given access to the electric bills for each section start tracking $1,000 monthly energy of the building. These documents showed a great bills discrepancy between the costs for heating and cooling the library and village/police areas 6,166 of the sq. ft. 2,172 sq. ft. 6,166 sq. ft. building which are basically the same size (approx. $500 6,166 sq. ft. 6,166 sq. ft.). Furthermore, the bills showed that the 2,172 sq. ft. 6,166 sq. ft. community room, the smallest area (2,172 sq. ft.), has the highest electric bill.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY REUSE & RECYCLING OPPORTUNITIES for CHANGE

SUGGESTIONS The employees of Rochester Public Library are doing a good job in reuse and recycle. They reuse the scrap paper for small note of books; reuse tape for other books and places; set the recycle bins for paper and plastic bottles. KEY

short-term

The same reuse and recycle ways are also recommended for patrons. And it is more important to set a recycle bin beside the all-in-one copier. medium-term

Another way to promote patrons to reuse and recycle is holding programs, such as craft programs to turn old books and magazines to useful household items.
