ANNUAL REPORT 2013
DEAR FRIENDS OF LIGHTHOUSE MINISTRIES, “Giving Hope that Changes Lives” continues to be the testimony of Lighthouse Ministries, Inc. The nationally recognized discipleship program implements a Success Sheltering model within a Life Learning Campus for men, women and women with children who need a safe haven as they strive to become productive citizens. These individuals and families come from a variety of situations that have led them to homelessness. There are those who have experienced financial loss, or were overcome by the bondage of alcohol or drug addictions. Some are the victims of sex trafficking or domestic violence. Others were brought by destructive lifestyles of instability, abuse and neglect. No matter what their past involved, these individuals are now finding God’s Peace, Life Purpose and Fulfillment of Potential by experiencing God’s love through relationships and discipleship. Carl Warnock and Jim Welch, cofounders of the ministry, began the mission 37 years ago with a strategic plan to communicate the Gospel and to meet the immediate needs of the homeless and at-risk population in West Central Florida. These pages will give a glimpse of how the wonderful lives this ministry serves are impacted by a Community of Hope. In Christ,
Steve Turbeville, President & C.E.O. MISSION Lighthouse Ministries, Inc. is set apart by the Spirit of God to communicate the Gospel of Jesus Christ and meet the physical, emotional and other needs of the poor and at-risk population.

IT ALL BEGAN IN 1977, IN DOWNTOWN LAKELAND... WARNOCK
WELCH
It had been the prayer of several Christian businessmen in the community to see a rescue mission established in Lakeland. Carl Warnock (a Lakeland land developer) and his friend, Jim Welch (a Lakeland attorney), inherited a vision to “serve the least, the last and the lost” in the city. So, at the corner of Kentucky and Bay Street, an abandoned liquor store became what was then known as Lakeland Lighthouse Rescue Mission. Like today, its doors were opened every day as a “place of refuge;” offering a chapel service, an evening meal, and overnight lodging to the men struggling on the streets. Now, 37 years later, your support has enabled Lighthouse Ministries, Inc. to continue carrying out that vision by Giving Hope that’s Changing the Lives of many men, women and children throughout West Central Florida.
MEN’S GOSPEL RESCUE MISSION Community involvement is necessary for meeting the needs of those who line up at the mission doors every day. Guests are supplied with food and clothing, and men are able to shower and receive a clean bed for the night. Every evening, a local pastor or teacher shares the Gospel with those in attendance, and a group of volunteers or the program residents will serve the guests their evening meal. Last year, you helped the Men’s Gospel Rescue Mission serve 51,825 hot meals. Counseling services are also provided. Last year, the men’s facility received much needed updating and renovation, and is now able to better serve the guests and residents. You can provide a meal to someone in need with just $1.92. RESIDENTIAL PROGRAM The Residential Program of Lighthouse Ministries is Christ-centered, and focuses on building up the individual in the areas of Spiritual Growth, Community, Industry and Education. There were 238 male and female residents and 41 residential children in 2013. Recovery programs and life skills training classes were available to help each of these individuals address issues from their past, and move forward to a brighter future once they are restored to the community. A monthly gift of $50 towards Success Sheltering will go towards supporting the needs of our residents in 2014. DONATE NOW: VISIT WWW.LIGHTHOUSEMIN.ORG or TEXT “SHELTER” to 50155
GEORGE W. JENKINS CENTER OF LEARNING The Adult Learning and Career Center helps to assess and support the residents in their educational and career goals, preparing them for a successful re-integration into the community. Staff and volunteers (call 863.687.4076 x227 to see what opportunities are available to volunteer in this area) help to tutor and guide them through the process. In 2013, 43 residents enrolled in the education program, with a total of 22 graduates and 38 residents received full-time employment within the ministry in areas such as hospitality, production and retail. Lighthouse Community Preschool is an extension of the Learning Center which provides faith-based education and childcare for the young children of female residents and a service to families in the community. A trained and state-certified staff nurtures the children with biblical truth and helps to build a solid foundation for academic excellence.
CHILDREN’S MINISTRIES While Lighthouse Community Preschool nurtures the younger children of the program and the community, Lighthouse’s KidCare program focuses on the school-aged children who reside within the ministry. Located in the Hobb’s Foundation Technology Center, the program’s director and volunteers from the community support the children in their scholastic studies and engage them with positive mentoring. It also serves as childcare for the younger children after hours. Since opening, 553 children have been served within the ministry. Your presence inspires hope, and we know your time is valuable. Call 863.687.4076 x227 to see what opportunities are available to volunteer in this area.
COMMUNITY OUTREACH “SEE THE NEED, HELP US FEED” Lighthouse’s H.O.P.E. (His Outreach to People in Emergency) Centers reach out to those in need throughout Polk and Hillsborough Counties by providing food, clothing and household items. Our generous community helps to supply these needs with their donations, and partnerships with churches and other ministries help the “See the Need, Help Us Feed” food box ministry reach out to those who need help. Last year, 2,568 boxes were provided to individuals and families in need, which totals to about 45,197 meals. Host a food drive (or toy drive during the holidays) at your church, school, place of business or special event. Food boxes are provided year-round, so there is always a need for supplies.
FAMILY STORES Positively impacting the communities they serve, Lighthouse Ministries’ Family Stores are an extension of the ministry which provides the service of offering discounted items that have been donated by our neighbors. Customers also know it as a safe place where they can receive prayer and support. In our stores alone, the Gospel was communicated to over 1,250 souls in 2013. The stores provide employment to the individuals the program serves, and funds preschool and adult education scholarships and community outreach. The inventory includes new and used furniture, clothing, fashion accessories, housewares, toys, books and more. Gently-used items such as clothing, furniture, housewares, toys and books can be donated to the ministry. Call 863.687.4076 or visit www. lighthousemin.org for store locations. In-kind items can be dropped off at our Distribution Center (519 N. Kentucky Avenue, Lakeland, FL 33801). Pick-ups for large items are also available.
HYDROPONICS GARDEN The Hydroponics Garden provides the ministry’s residents and guests with a healthy variety of produce, including: lettuces, green beans, peppers, strawberries, tomatoes and more. Known as “Project Green Thumb,” it functions as an area of entry-level work therapy for the male residents who are trained in the unique process of hydroponics, and help with the planting, sustaining and harvesting of the crop. The unique hydroponics system omits soil, and works to deliver nutrients directly to the plant’s root system, accelerating growth and providing a greater yield of crop. (Supplies provided by HydroStacker LLC.) Last year, the garden produced over 5,750 pounds of produce.
COMPASSION CALL 855.4.CHANGE(242643) When an individual calls 855.4.CHANGE (242643), they will be referred toward the resources they need, and provided with transportation to food and shelter. With the help of community partners such as Salvation Army, Talbot House Ministries, the City of Lakeland and The Mission of Winter Haven, those who make the Compassion Call will be provided with assistance and be guided in a direction of hope. The community is still able to distribute the Compassion Card (available for download at www.lighthousemin.org) to individuals they encounter in need. Call is toll-free. Transportation and referrals facilitated by Lighthouse Ministries.
“I went from being a church girl, A’s and B’s in school, attending college early, living in a big home with everything I needed, and a steady job - to absolutely nothing. My life had fallen apart. I knew I had to change my life... Early on in the program, I realized how much I not only needed God, but how much I wanted Him in my life. “ JESSICA
“Because of the mess my life was in, I hated being sober and having to face it even more... I never had a relationship with the Lord before I came here. I still thought that the Greyhound had brought me to Lighthouse; but shortly after being saved and surrendering to God, I realized that it was my broken spirit and God’s grace, love, and mercy that brought me here. “ RYAN
“Unemployment led me here. Homelessness led me here. All avenues had been exhausted for me and my son. Hopelessness led us here... I am very grateful to this program for giving me the uninterrupted time to spend raising my son...I do not have to worry about being abused verbally, sexually, or physically, and can rest knowing that we are - for the moment - safe.“ SUSAN & JEHO
