UC HEALTHRENOVATION -Cincinnati, OH

Rebranding into a sleeker, modern symbol of science and hope, UC Health determined that their existing spaces needed to exude the same level of confidence and pride that their employees do. The purpose, tone and voice of the organization drove them to examine existing conditions and create aspirations for future design decisions.

UC - Branding Renovation UC’s new strategy came with many visualization meetings about their core values. In order to discuss their new direction, it was necessary to understand how these values would be implemented in the space and what each word represented in architectural language. Here is just one example bridging the gap between design thinking, and user experience. UC’s brand, primary goal, and direct aimsmarketing, are blended into a cohesive guided experience UC’s brand, primary goal, and direct aims are blended into a cohesive guided experience UC’s brand, primary goal, -and direct&aims throughout and constant science hopeare blended into a cohesive guided experience

HOSPITALITYMARRIOT DELTA -Sharonville, OH

Marriott’s upscale full service brand, Delta, aims to provide a hospitality solution for the modern frequent traveller. Each of their locations, both foreign and domestic, speak to the city in which it resides - all while holding profound importance on simple details that make the experience perfect. Cincinnati’s location is an example of the redefined sophistication of the city - rich culture and history with a contemporary take that welcomes the future.

AGES

OH – ID Preliminary 60% Design Submittal

Marriott Delta This specific Delta focuses on merging Cincinnati’s art deco past with modern hospitality. The lobby was formed by taking strong line work and the black and gold metals from traditional art deco coloring. The lobby boasts a large skylight that warms up the finishes and highlights the check-in area. The lounge keeps business travelers in mind by providing a variety of seating arrangements with power and laptop tables available to connect.

Marriott Delta Full renderings of the public spaces are necessary to convey not only the image and branding of the hotel, but also the depth and textures in the space - as many materials do not come across well in plan or elevation. A primary lounge is necessary for guests who are waiting to check in or heading out. A side seating area is provided for individuals who need to plug in quickly. A collaborative table prompts larger meetings or conversation between guests.

DISTILLED HERITAGE

DISTILLED HERITAGE

Deep beneath Cincinnati’s old facades and new bustling towers run veins of limestone that hold the secret to perfect bourbon. Much like the city, this limestone has been around for decades, working to create something beautiful.

The earthy and caramel tones of bourbon speak volumes about its character – warm and relaxing. The environment in which one enjoys this beverage should do the same. The rich materiality of leather, wood, and copper evoke the essence of Cincinnati’s deep heritage and the timeless craft of bourbon in a welcoming space designed for bourbon drinkers and intrigued passersby alike.

Marriott Delta Because Distilled Heritage functions as a restaurant and bar at night, and a grab n’ go coffee during the day, the space needs to be versatile. A series of soffits makes the 15 foot ceiling more manageable and the occupied areas more intimate. Zones are broken into circulation, dining, and lounge by seating and flooring type.

Marriott Delta The materiality of the space is highlighted in rendered elevations. The emphasis on warm wood tones hearkens back to a den or cozy bourbon lounge. The limestone on the floor speaks to the way bourbon is crafted. Bottles are showcased throughout the space. The copper caramel tones warm the deep blue, balancing the moody atmosphere with one that is available for regular usage during the day.

World of Beer is made of a community of beer lovers that thrives on discovering new brews. With over 550 beers from around the world, the tavern atmosphere shares culture, stories, and flavors. World of Beer boasts passionate staff that serves beer the way it’s intended.

WOB - Chiangi For this theoretical project, the team chose to focus on the global scale of the airport. This opportunity was perfect to expose people of all backgrounds to beers of all backgrounds. The Chiangi airport is an expression of Singapore; giving a chance to share local brews on tap, as fresh as they can be, to those unable to spend more than a few hours in the city.

NATIONWIDE CHILDREN’S RADIOLOGY -Columbus, OH

24

As one of America’s leading children’s hospitals, Nationwide strives to keep all their departments new, clean, and packed with the latest technology. Their Radiology Department covers Fluoroscopy, Ultrasound, Bone Density, and Interventional Radiation. Lighthearted colors and animal motifs drive the feeling of wonder and imagination through difficult times.

Nationwide Children’s - Radiology Children’s brands themselves with color and motifs symbolizing whimsy and adventure. With bright colors and accents of warm neutral browns and woodgrain, the space becomes a comfortable yet exciting experience (see rendering 1 below). In addition to the renovation, Nationwide requested a larger reading room and advanced workstations. This initiative will bring experts from across the country together and requires a space for collaboration and effective presentation. I produced and rendered a virtual reality model of the PAIR lab, conference and huddle room to let users experience the space before it is built in 2020.

1

26

(Pictured Below) 2. A reading room assistant sits directly outside the space to coordinate meetings and discuss whereabouts 3. The main conference room seats 30 people and boasts large monitors that connect to the PACS workstations. This eases communication and allows doctors to stream results wirelessly. 4. The PAIR lab is a collaborative setup for full time employees and students.

Nationwide Children’s - Radiology With Nationwide’s motive to implement nature and wonder, their flooring patterns are complex and meandering. They are meant to mimic a river’s path, with three different sheet vinyls winding around the plan. Accordingly, a finish floor plan had to be created showing the different types and including seaming diagrams (see rendering below). Wayfinding “bursts” are added to the floors and walls on routes of main circulation. Room numbers are also large and paired with graphics (see elevations to right).

WAYNE HOSPITAL CAMPUS EXPANSION -Greenville, OH

30

Wayne Healthcare is a hospital dedicated to the health and wellbeing of its surrounding community. In it’s campus expansion, Wayne seeks to grow into its master plan and care for even more residents. Uniting the old wing with the new, a connecting concourse provides natural light, lounge areas for family, and cool nature driven finishes that relax and heal.

Wayne Campus Expansion Wayne’s new wing showcases new amenities like lounges, spacious patient rooms, green spaces and wider, lighter corridors. The plan pictured below indicates the areas in which these activities will occur. Significantly improving patient experience will create an inviting environment for the community and staff as well. Warm grey tile, slate blue accents and natural light creates a biophilic realm of healing and calm. The elevator bay and help desk mark an important stopping point and are called out with blended blue tile (see rendering top right).

32

The patient room pictured above illustrates a clean and clear headwallimperative to a nurse’s duties. The storage space has an attached status dry erase board to further communication between care givers, visitors and staff. Each room has a piece of art displaying a nature scene scientifically proven to boost spirits and ease recovery.

NORTHERN LIGHTS REFLECTION ROOMS -Reykjahlíð,Iceland

34

The Aurora Borealis is an incredibly beautiful natural phenomenon that gathers people each year, drawing individuals out into cold northern climates. These trips are experiences to reflect within oneself and on the surrounding natural world. Interestingly, the northern lights have been viewed for hundreds of years, bringing mystery and self reflection with them.

Northern Lights Reflection Rooms Guests travelling to Iceland to see the Aurora crave an unobstructed view of the sky. They brave the cold conditions to see vivid beams laced throughout the stars. The Iceland Northern Lights Rooms provide comfort and hospitality while adventurers, locals and tourists alike. Because the Northern Lights are an amazing yearly event, the site should be able to be accessed by all kinds of people. When a visitor is comfortable and able to take in the surrounding nature, they will be able to spend more time reflecting on their experiences and journey.

36

1.The module must open up to achieve a view of the sky 2.Lessen the angle of the roof to view where the sky meets the surrounding lake and mountains 3. The form is raised off the ground to build on terrain, see the best views, and ease transportation

Northern Lights Reflection Rooms The Iceland Northern Lights Rooms functions as an all inclusive guest facility able to accommodate up to 20 visitors. Permanent housing for the host family and their stable is on site, directly adjacent to the hub. The guest hub contains a kitchen and dining room, able to serve all guests at once on the lower level. An upper level lounge for watching the aurora provides stunning views of the site and sky.

RONALD MCDONALD CHARITY HOUSE -Dayton, OH

40

Ronald McDonald House Charities provide families with the support they need during children’s medical stays. Siblings, parents and other family members are provided an accessible location to stay close to their loved ones, all while minutes away from emergency care.

Ronald McDonald House Because the Dayton Ronald McDonald House works in association with Dayton Children’s Hospital, the build-out for the facility within Dayton Children’s needed to reflect the comfortable and residential feel of the charity while maintaining the cleanliness and resiliency of the hospital. The palette, as a result, was playful and natural. Warm stone surrounding the fireplace paired with bold and bright vinyls on furniture to create a dichotomy of residential and healthcare design. Children enjoy the space and forget the stigma of the hospital while parents comfort in elements found in the home.

LIVEWELL COLLABORATIVE -Cincinnati, OH

44

Livewell Collaborative is a Cincinnati based organization that focuses primarily on design aspects for large industry leaders. Students from a variety of disciplines work to provide user analyses, in-depth research, and ultimately, inspirational ideas, The primary goal is an innovative solution that extends across the lifespan.

Livewell Because Livewell was a school assigned project, a site a preexisting building had already been chosen for the floorplan. The project was constrained to a 100 ft x 50 ft commercial plan with regularly spaced columns. The given space left little room for the open office, flexible environment, and lockable studios Livewell requested. My concept was driven by the ideas of a black box. Defined as a system whose internal workings are unknown, a black box serves as a confidential, sleek, and flexible solution to Livewell’s growing privacy needs.

46

Livewell The program for Livewell called for a combination of lockable and open studios, private office space, collaboration and “touch down areas, in addition to printing, kitchen and storage zones. The space was to be geared towards millennials, as they are the primary employees at Livewell and the targeted audience of many of the research products. Livewell requested 4 separate studios and a large space for events and awards. The two open studios I placed against the western wall have a foldable wall partition dividing space when necessary (see rendering below).

48

(Pictured Below) 1. A collaborative pin-up within one of the closed “Black Box” studios 2. Linda’s office - as the head of Livewell, Linda is tasked with holding small private meetings and having confidential conversations 3. The entry sequence and open collaboration zone. With a variety of seating options, people of all ages are welcome to contribute

OVER-THE-RHINE FILM INSTITUTE -Cincinnati, OH

50

A studio led project, the Over-the-Rhine Film Institute explored the idea of creating a new, nationally recognized cinematic landmark in a historic building within urban Cincinnati. Using a preexisting building next door to the empty lot, the film institute must merge old with new.

OTR Film Institute The program for the film institute required public access to a gallery, cinema, and library - but restricted access to an office space and private apartment rented to visiting artists. Because of the variety of privacy, I chose to tackle each floor as a separate entity.

52

Inspired by Melnikov’s Soviet Worker’s Union, the user enters under a cantilevered auditorium. Pictured at right is a wall detail of the auditorium’s structure. Below is a section cut through the 3 story atrium space.

1

The user enters in compression, under a cantilevered auditorium and is immediately released as the space opens into a three story atrium. Located on the ground floor is a grand lobby, bathrooms, and a small cafe. If the user enters from the street into the gallery, they see a hollowed brick shell with the most recent movie exhibit.

2

On the second floor, the user can access the auditorium and look out over the gallery while in queue. They also have public access to the library, classroom and workroom. These spaces can be rented for groups pre or post viewing the most recent exhibit, or simply used for film scholars.

54

3

The third floor consists of office space for the employees and board members of the Film Institute. This provides space for meetings, conferences, and private calls - complete with a break room kitchen. The guest artist may also use this space to work if they deem their apartment insufficient.

4

The fourth floor is the guest artist apartment. Its primary access is the back stair, with the entrance on the first floor. However, there is special access via elevator. The one-bedroom apartment has a kitchen and dining space as well as enclosed studio. The bedroom and studio open onto an outdoor balcony.
